WEEKLY BRIEF Sivan 13-14 5780/May 5-6 Parshat Nasso A Message From Rabbi Adler Parshat Nasso, the longest Parsha in the Torah (176 pesukim), gets its length from the repeon of the dedicaon of the Mizbeiach by each prince of the twelve tribes. They all bring the idencal korban and yet the Torah repeats each Nasi’s korban . The Ramban suggests inially that it was done for the Kavod of each Nasi. Each deserved to go first but, obviously they actually all could not have gone first. To highlight that each Nasi deserved to go first the sacrifice of each was described in the same detail. But then Ramban suggests a more profound explanaon. Despite the fact that the physical korban was idencal, each Nasi’s mindset was very different. Yehuda may have been thinking about the leadership role that he was desned to fulfill based on Yaakov’s bracha. Zevulun was thinking about the business he was going to generate by navigang the high seas. Yissachar was thinking about the Torah scholars who were to emerge from his loins. No two korbanot are alike. We each have our own dreams, aspiraons, and talents. For a tzibbur of Am Yisrael to funcon we require everyone’s contribuon . Everyone has something to contribute and the Torah recognizes each contribuon. And for that alone I am prepared to sit in shul and listen to a 176 pasuk Torah reading. WEEKLY BRIEF Sivan 13-14 5780/May 5-6 Parshat Nasso

A Message From Rabbi Adler Parshat Nasso, the longest Parsha in the Torah (176 pesukim), gets its length from the repetition of the dedication of the Mizbeiach by each prince of the twelve tribes. They all bring the identical korban

and yet the Torah repeats each Nasi’s korban . The Ramban suggests initially that it was done for the Kavod of each Nasi. Each deserved to go first but, obviously they actually all could not have gone first. To highlight that each Nasi deserved to go first the sacrifice of each was described in the same detail. But then Ramban suggests a more profound explanation. Despite the fact that the physical korban was identical, each Nasi’s mindset was very different. Yehuda may have been thinking about the leadership role that he was destined to fulfill based on Yaakov’s bracha. Zevulun was thinking about the business he was going to generate by navigating the high seas. Yissachar was thinking about the Torah scholars who were to emerge from his loins. No two korbanot are alike. We each have our own dreams, aspirations, and talents. For a tzibbur of Am Yisrael to function we require everyone’s contribution . Everyone has something to contribute and the Torah recognizes each contribution. And for that alone I am prepared to sit in shul and listen to a 176 pasuk Torah reading. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Yosef Adler

A MESSAGE FROM RABBI WIENER A Lonely Wedding but Never Alone Many of us have joined virtual bittersweet wedding celebrations over the last several weeks in our communities or in Israel, celebrating, smiling, crying from afar as our friends, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, siblings and even children celebrated this mile-stone very much alone. Few loved ones present to share words and gestures of affection and dancing whose choreography in many cases was quite creative but remarkably un-

conventional. I have participated virtually in several weddings but in one instance, where a rebbe from Israel could not be present to officiate the wedding of his beloved student, I substituted and served as the mesader kiddushin. It was obviously like no wedding I had ever officiated before. Never in my life did I think I would have to ask in advance if there would be a minyan to recite the sheva berachot at the chuppa; never did I think that the ge-mara in Ketubot which discusses whether the chatan counts as one of the ten would be relevant at the wed-ding itself. I had tears in my eyes as did the chatan and kallah and their parents, knowing that there were grandparents who could not be present (and not because they had passed from this world) and knowing that my clapping and singing alone as the chatan and kallah left the chuppa was not the “Kol Sasson Vekol Simcha” they had anticipated several months ago when envisioning the throngs of friends and family who would be escorting the chatan and kallah from the chuppa to the yichud room. I tried to control my emotions as I didn’t want to touch my eyes with my gloves to wipe any tears or have the need to blow my nose which was covered se-curely with a mask. What occurred to me however, was that although the imagery of the “Kol sasson vekol simcha” reverberating through a wedding hall with hundreds of people singing as is reflected in the last of the sheva berachot recit-ed under the chuppa was absent, there was a phrase from one of the sheva berachot that was fulfilled at this wedding more than any other I had ever attended. In one of the sheva berachot we ask Hashem to give joy to the new couple, “Kesameichacha yetzeercha be-Gan Eden mekedem”-like your Creator allowed you to rejoice in Gan Eden in earlier times. How did Hashem facilitate the simcha of Adam and Chava when they joined as husband and wife? After all, who was there to celebrate with them their wedding? They were all alone. What kind of simcha can there be when the chatan and kallah are alone? The answer of course is that when Hashem is celebrating with us we are never alone. The gemara even says that Hashem braided Chava’s hair to prepare her for the chuppa. He served as both the bridesmaid and the best man.The chatanim and kallot during these harrowing and sometimes heartbreaking days are the recipients of this blessing. Although many loved ones are not present at their weddings, Hashem is very much present, celebrating with the chatan and kalla and ensuring their joy as He did for Adam and Chava. As these chatanim and kallot are blessed to feel His uniquely intense presence on their wedding day as He does His best to provide the rightful joy of a chatan and kalla despite the absence of the multitudes of family and friends, our hope and prayer is that He remain ever-present as they begin this new chapter in their lives and build what we hope will be a bayit ne’eman beYisrael.

RINAT ROUNDUP: PRESIDENTS CORNER

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Shavuot. As we begin the opportunity to Daven Tefillah b’Tzibbur in backyards, I want to thank David Schiff for the herculean effort and significant time he put into all the details. These minyanim are not actually Rinat minyanim, but we all needed guidance as best to conduct meaningful Tefillah in these unusual times. As we go into Shabbat and beyond, please be particularly respectful of your neighbors. Though many restrictions have eased up, we must be mindful and careful of how things look for the greater community and for our community, and make an effort not only to abide by the rabbinic and government regulations, but also avoid any appearance of flouting the rules. Beyond our regular shiurim, this past week the youth department, together with Grow

Torah, sponsored a program teaching how to grow a garden. This Motzei Shabbat at 9:30 pm we will have a shul-wide Kahoot. Yossi Faber (the first husband!) will be the MC, and there will be questions suitable for ALL of our members. Be sure to tune in to Zoom after Shabbat to play. This Sunday night Adult Ed is bringing Dr. Shayna Weiss for a lecture at 8 pm. I hope to see you all Zooming with Rinat. Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom and wonderful week, Bina
