Parsha Points
Brought to you by the ASBI Education Committee The parsha starts with the census of the male descendants, age 30 - 50, of Gershon & Merari,
who are able to participate in the Tabernacle work.
The parsha continues with the laws regarding the camp purification in case of Tzaraat and the
theft from a Jew and a proselyte.
The laws of Sotah (the wayward wife) and its whole process are then explained.
The parsha then discusses the Nazirite and his voluntary vow of abstinence that includes
renouncing drinking wine, cutting his hair, and being in contact with a dead body. The Torah
also mentions the procedure when the nazir completes the period of abstinence.
The parsha concludes with Moshe entering the dedicated altar after 12 days and the ceremony
where each one of the Tribal leaders brought and dedicated his offering on a different day.
Parsha Teaser (answer below):
How many Nezirim (Plural of Nazir—Nazirite) does the Bible mention?
Parsha Teaser Answer: We are tempted to answer 2 but the correct answer is just 1. Shimshon (Judges 13:15) & Shmuel the prophet (Shmuel 1:11) were Nezirim, but Shmuel was not called a nazir in the Bible since he never decided himself to vow to be a nazir. His mother Chana vowed him to nezirout at birth.
