Taking care of your hamsterPlanning on getting a hamster? Make sure you read these important tips first!

Hamsters are small and generally easier to care for. But that does not mean your responsibility in taking care of them can be taken lightly.

TiP 1: Know ThaT SoMe are Social & SoMe anTi-SocialMost dwarf hamsters are happy with company if they had been living together from a young age. However, there are some hamsters that do not enjoy company.

Syrian hamsters, for example, are solitary animals by nature. They prefer to live alone and will not hesitate to inflict serious injury on one another.

With this in mind, make sure you ask your pet professional on the preferred living arrangements for your hamster.

TiP 2: PrevenT UnwanTed Breeding Separate the male and female hamsters to prevent unwanted breeding. This is crucial because hamsters mature quickly and can reproduce even at one month old.

If not separated, they can continue to breed every month and produce a litter between two and ten babies each time.

Now, that’s a lot of hamsters! Therefore, it’s best to only keep social hamsters of the same sex together.

How long has it been since you took care of your hair? We look at what Mashu offers to make you more beautiful

Hairdo tutorials can be interesting – they can take normal, limp hair and turn it into beautiful, intricately-spun ponytails and so on. Nevertheless, the message at the start and end of every video is clear: Go for hair treatment once a month or risk an unsalvageable mane.

Le blanc by mashu offers a variety of hair beautifying and pampering treatments. From hair straightening to perming, it covers all your hair needs. The head massages and blow-dry hair styling in particular will make you feel and look like a goddess.

Transform Your mane, Transform YourselfMost women do not realise how their hairstyle can transform their looks completely. For instance, a round face would go perfectly with soft straightened hair that frames the jawline, and a heart-shaped face would carry off big, luxurious curls beautifully.

Find out which hairstyle fits your face as well as the array of treatments available for your crowning glory at le blanc by mashu. You’ll be amazed by what a powerful hair repair serum can do!

lose Your Hair loss Problems, noT Your Hair! One of the key treatments in le blanc by mashu is the Anti Hair Loss Soda Spa Scalp Treatment. Each of these elements brings to the table its own specialised hair-saving quality. Most customers delightfully report feeling an immediate change in their hair! Who knew that hair loss prevention treatments could be this luxurious too?

The international break gives us time to take an in-depth look at the club that

has taken the league by storm this season:

Southampton

After 11 rounds of matches, Chelsea leads at the top of the table, Liverpool looks like a shadow

of its former self, Arsenal cannot live without Alexis Sanchez, Manchester City is struggling to keep pace with the top teams while city rival Manchester United is still

finding its feet under new manager Louis van Gaal.

Congratulations to the winners!

SurpriSe riSeBut the biggest story of all is Southampton’s meteoric rise to 2nd place in the Premier League table. Who would’ve ever expected that?

The Saints have risen from the dead and have played some scintillating football to win eight out of their 11 matches so far this season.

Remember not too long ago when they were the laughing stock of the league?

remArKAble recovery & AScentSouthampton lost practically everything: its brain (Mauricio Pochettino), head (Adam Lallana), heart (Rickie Lambert), muscle (Dejan Lovren) and future (Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers). But somehow its body has regenerated, and to a highly-surprising extent.

Former Dutch star Ronald Koeman entered the fray as manager, after supposedly being overlooked for the Dutch national team job. One team’s loss is another’s blessing as the Dutchman wasted no time in securing the likes of Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mane, who have all been nothing short of brilliant so far. Even £12 million signing Shane Long has gotten on the score sheet.

SAintS in Fighting FormSouthampton, once ripped apart, has miraculously regenerated into something even more formidable than before, with five wins and one draw from six home matches. The Saints have also only had two defeats away from home – a 2-1 defeat against Liverpool (1st game of the season) and a narrow 1-0 lost at the hands of former manager Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur.

Southampton surprise: The Saints go marching on

The Saints have also proven that their league form is no accident, such as when they beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates stadium in the Capital One Cup recently.

rocK-SteAdy At the bAcKWhile the attack gets all the attention and glory, it is worth noting that Southampton’s success so far stems from its defensive solidity too, having amazingly conceded only five goals so far (Chelsea and Swansea are next closest, each having conceded 11 goals). Look at any other team in Europe and tell me if they’ve conceded as few goals as the Saints!

However, all good things must somehow come to an end, and with tougher fixtures against Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United coming up after the international break, the Saints will have their work cut out for them.

They might not be able to replicate such impressive form as they’ve shown so far but they should be strong enough to secure a place in Europe at the very least. May the Saints come marching in in glory at the end of the season.

5 types of people you secretly want removed from Whatsapp group chats

If you, like me, are on WhatsApp, you probably have, like, 2,000 group chats running at any one time. OK, maybe 20. But you get my point.

I’ve found that there are many different kinds of people on WhatsApp. Here are some I wish I could kick out of the group:

1. The supersTarThis person has a supreme aversion to using his real name on his profile. Don’t even get me started on the profile picture — this person usually puts a picture of his pet as the profile picture. Or flowers.

When added to a group chat with this person, this is the one you usually have to ask, “Erm who is 87654321 ah?”. The worst kinds are the ones who respond to this request with mild irritation.

2. The sTealThSometimes I am not sure why this person is in group chats at all. Why doesn’t he/she just leave?

This person does not contribute a single thing to the conversation. To make things worse, this person does not respond even when you are trying to arrange something.

3. The Wannabe Wise GuyThere is a thing as too much conversation, or one-way conversation, though.

This fella fancies himself the joker of the group. He constantly spams the group chat with jokes, memes and un-funny articles.

He also doesn’t seem to care that he gets no response. 4. The lTp (losT The ploT)Everyone’s congratulating someone on her new baby and this person goes: “Guys, should I have chicken rice or nasi lemak for lunch today? Which is less unhealthy?” 5. serGeanT efficienTHe starts group chats for a specific purpose (“Surprise Party for Bob”) then leaves once it’s over.

The thing is, Sergeant Efficient makes up a very small percentage of the population, leaving the rest of us in hundreds of group chats with no one else in the chat left except… ourselves.

I hate Whatsapp; don’t you?

beSingapore among least affordable

cities for young graduatesSingapore is one of the least affordable cities in the world for young professionals, according to Knight Frank’s Cost of Living Index

The city-state was ranked 16th on the list of 20 global cities monitored by Knight Frank, and published in its inaugural Global Cities 2015 report.

surprisinG resulTs?The report stated that young graduates based in Singapore have one of the lowest levels of disposable income, with around 10 per cent of their net salaries left at the end of every month.

Frankfurt was rated as most affordable on the list, with young professionals in the German city having 60 per cent of their income remaining after expenses.

In 20th place, Hong Kong emerged as the least affordable city, with a 4.61 per cent income deficit recorded for a Hong Kong graduate.

All Asian cities fell below the top 10 among the global cities tracked.

chanGinG ciTy TrendsKnight Frank’s research looked at young graduates in the districts surrounding the city limits, using variables including graduate starting salary, cost of rented

accommodation and utility bills, as well as the cost of a pint of beer, a coffee and groceries.

James Roberts, Head of Commercial Research at Knight Frank, said, “Many of the new districts emerging around the traditional CBDs have developed as vibrant and edgy places to live, and often appeal to young graduates starting out on their career. However, as the areas gain popularity, prices rise and often the young graduates struggle to remain in the area.”

He added, “It can no longer be assumed that older employees want to move to the suburbs; instead they are joining younger workers in preferring a vibrant urban lifestyle, so competition for homes in many of these edgier locations is hotting up.”

“The challenges across many of these global cities will be balancing the conflicting demands of accommodating the new wave of firms, and their workers, in the same highly sought-after districts,” he said.

This delightful animation and its lovable icon will be remembered as a modern classic

Warning: Spoilers ahead

Disney has done it again. Big Hero 6 may look like a feel-good action cartoon packed with laughs, but it wasn’t just fun and games – there

were many moments I wasn’t emotionally prepared for.

One minute, I was munching on popcorn and happily enjoying a fantastical superhero movie. The next minute, I found myself weeping uncontrollably beneath my 3-D glasses.

It’s like they have discovered the magical formula for an emotional rollercoaster – one which I would gladly sit through again and again.

Hiro tHe HeroBig Hero 6 follows 13-year-old tech prodigy Hiro Hamada (voiced by Ryan Potter), who dabbles in underground robot fights with his wicked machine. His older brother, Tadashi (Daniel Henney), cleverly steers him towards the prestigious robotics programme at his own university.

After seeing Tadashi’s awesomely cute and cuddly invention, a giant inflatable healthcare assistant called Baymax (Scott Adsit), Hiro is convinced about joining the programme.

Now brace yourself for the waterworks.

[spoiler warning again] Just as the two brothers share a nice blissful moment, Tadashi is killed. Hiro plunges into depression, cooping himself up in the room he used to share with his brother.

One day, Hiro stubs his toe and yells, “Ouch!” This activates Baymax, the legacy that Tadashi had left behind, and it begins bobbing about, helping Hiro to grieve and to move on. Except that this grieving entails some superhero fighting and action, as Hiro and Baymax uncover a twisted mess of conspiracies behind Tadashi’s death.

A Big AdventureJoining the motley revenge crew are Tadashi’s schoolmates: Wasabi (Damon Wayans Jr), Honey Lemon (Génesis Rodríguez), GoGo Tomago (Jamie Chung), and Fred (TJ Miller). If you’re wondering about their funny names, you’ll have to watch the movie! The team hunts down the perpetrator of Tadashi’s death, thus forming the titular “Big Hero 6”.

There’s something hilarious about watching the white balloon giant that is Baymax bouncing and wiggling and getting stuck in windows. It’s almost therapeutic, and it helped me to cope after all that crying from Tadashi’s death. Well, Baymax is a healing assistant after all.

But don’t let your guard down – there are more tears to come. Disney teases out every emotion, such that you’ll question how much your stomach can hurt from laughing, and how much the human

heart can ache.In one poignant scene (among many),

Hiro watches footage of Tadashi testing the Baymax prototype when Tadashi says: “Don’t give up, I believe in you… You’re going to help so many people.” Cue tears.

There are also twists in the story that will floor you, and subtle details that will overturn your expectations. For example, the film entertains our fantasy of vigilantism and revenge but shows that ultimately there are legal consequences to be faced.

But needs More CHArACterNonetheless, I have slight grievances about Big Hero 6 too. For one, the film is set in the fictional metropolis of San Fransokyo, a portmanteau of San Francisco, USA and Tokyo, Japan. I couldn’t see how this mash of places added value to the movie.

San Fran and Tokyo are international, cosmopolitan cities, and I’d bet you could find the same mix of people and landscapes in each city without having to mash the two together.

I also felt shortchanged over the other four heroes who accompany Hiro and Baymax. I walked away knowing much more about the robot than those human characters, and I felt like there was more to the Big Hero 6 team than we were shown.

All in all, it’s a lively and moving story that the whole family can enjoy – giggles guaranteed. Be sure to watch it in 3-D. The art and animation will really pop out, creating a highly-engaging experience. The 3-D glasses can also hide your tears.

Tip: Stay for the end-credits scene for a special guest appearance!

Maria Sharapova shares her sweet secrets

The long-anticipated sequel to the slapstick comedy Dumb and Dumber is finally here

Corny punchlines and body gags are almost staples in any comedy show but do you know where they originated from?

Many believe that the hilarious movie Dumb and Dumber (1994) steered physical comedy into a new era, and solidified the career of resident funnyman Jim Carrey.

Now, after 20 years of waiting, Carrey and partner in crime Jeff Daniels finally return in the sequel Dumb and Dumber To. That’s not a spelling error; it’s called total immersion, so let’s get silly!

a funny StoryTwo decades after their insane antics in Dumb and Dumber, Lloyd (played by Carrey) and Harry (Daniels) find themselves in a new scramble. When Harry learns that he has a daughter out there (Who let this silly fool breed?) he drags Lloyd across the country to recruit help in his search.

They travel to the most extreme places, from a mental institution (where they rightfully belong) to a summit of brilliant

minds (where they certainly don’t belong), and inevitably mess things up along the way (where they can always be found).

Just as we’re wondering what could possibly go even more wrong between the two clowns, we remember that there’s a daughter involved now. Frankly, we’re kind of fearful for her!

legaCy of laugHSPreceded by the box office hit Dumb and Dumber, this sequel has a lot of expectations to live up to. The former has become a huge classic in home entertainment collections across the world.

Carrey shared that even after watching Dumb and Dumber for the umpteenth time, he “was laughing and couldn’t believe

some of the stuff (they) did.”Daniels admitted that the success of

the first movie only tightens the pressure valve: “I have businessmen coming up to me in the airport to tell me that it is their favourite movie… We all felt a lot of pressure (when making) the next film.”

Peter Farrelly, one half of the slapstick comedy-directing Farrelly brothers, explains that Lloyd and Harry are so lovable because they “live with such joie de vivre, and people everywhere love seeing that spirit.”

We wonder if this “joy of living” will look worn and contrived in Dumb and Dumber To, especially with Carrey’s move into comparatively sombre roles such as in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) and Yes Man (2008).

ComiC SenSeBut we’re glad to learn that Dumb and Dumber To’s writers, John Morris and Sean Anders, were the geniuses behind the guffaw-inducing We’re the Millers (2013) and the upcoming Horrible Bosses 2.

We also hear that Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence will make a cameo appearance in the movie! That should be another good reason to catch this film.

What does crocodile meat taste like?

Table@Pip’s offers a number of creative dishes to expand your taste experience – we take a look at a culinary adventure by Chef Chua

An inventive new restaurant, Table@Pip’s, recently opened in Orchard Central B2. Although it occupies a rather unfortunate open space under the escalator, the clever modern design makes it all come together. In a strange way, it sets the stage for some of the most unexpected and creative dishes I’ve ever experienced.

Owner-Chef Philip Chua is one of Singapore’s home-grown local chefs, who rose through the ranks in 5-Star hotel kitchens over the past 30 years. Over the years, he acquired the knowledge and skills to cook many types of international food and desserts, customised to suit local palates.

CROCODilE MEAT, ANYONE?I’ve heard that croc tastes much like chicken. Why would anyone want to pay more for something that tastes like chicken?

This hasn’t deterred Chef Chua from being adventurous. His BBQ Crocodile Ribs ($29.90) is a labour of love. Four hours of steaming tenderises the crocodile meat and a copious amount of ginger helps to remove the gamey taste. The ribs are then smothered with the chef’s homemade BBQ sauce.

The meat, that slightly resembled that of fish, easily came away from the bone at the touch of a fork. Unlike pork or beef ribs, the crocodile meat flaked apart a little but not as much as fish meat.

DOES iT TASTE likE BBQ CHiCkEN? Between the savoury BBQ sauce and ginger, the ribs didn’t taste like chicken at all. The ginger, commonly used with fish, triggered (or tricked) the mind to think that it tasted a little like fish. But its taste was quite distinct.

Having tasted croc ribs, I can safely say croc meat tastes like, well, croc meat! Its texture was interesting too – slightly firmer than a large cooked fish but definitely not tough at all.

CANDiED BACON AND iCE CREAM? SERiOUSlY?Chef Chua has a few dishes in which he adds candied bacon (sugar-encrusted bacon baked for hours until it caramelises). The first is the Fruity Fish Fillet ($18.90), which he garnishes with candied bacon. The other is Bread & Butter Pudding with vanilla ice cream topped with candied bacon ($8.90).

One would expect bacon to go well with

other meat. So with the Fruity Fish Fillet it was no surprise.

The fillet of cream dory is butterflied and stuffed with sweet glazed apples and lemon zest, and served with a skewered strip of candied bacon. Indeed it was fruity, and the bacon added savoury, sweet and smoky flavours.

The dish was bursting with a nice medley of fruity and savoury flavours but I was left wondering where the fish taste had gone.

Fish dish aside, the combination of bread pudding, custard sauce, vanilla ice cream and candied bacon was my immediate favourite. I’ve had bread pudding before but Chef Chua’s addition of candied bacon really added a new flavour dimension to this classic.

OTHER NOvEl iDEAS fROM CHEf CHUAThere are a myriad of other desserts and dishes that are worth trying. The Flower Pot Tiramisu ($11.90), for instance, is served in a petite flower pot dusted with Milo (to look like soil) and with a stalk of mint leaves planted on top. It’s a novel presentation to dig into!

Unlike traditional escargot swimming in a pool of butter, each one of the Escargot Bourguignon ($9.90 for four) is cupped in a button mushroom, with butter and garlic – full of flavour, yet not greasy at all!

If you’re an adventurous foodie and want a new experience, Table@Pip’s has a number of dishes worth trying.

This is for The cluelessI am guilty of neglecting my hair care. Being an avid fan of red hair, I have been patronising colour dyeing salons since I was 16 and it is no surprise that my hair is in shambles. Believe me when I say this is my emergency kit.

Are you ready to save your hair?

Braids, ‘bed-head’ and blow-out curls – it seems that these hollywood goddesses can do no wrong.

Want to know their secret?I have seen so many red carpet photos of picture perfect celebrities. We have Angelina Jolie with her hair in a tight, curled bun with a single strand brushing her cheeks. We have Megan Fox with her hair sleek and soft, cascading down her back. We have Olivia Wilde with her head of softly blown curls, dancing around her shoulder.

What do they have in common? I’ll let you in on a little secret – they have the best hair products that money can buy. But there is no use overspending $100 or more on a product if it’s not what you truly need. Here’s a quick guide!

sTep 1: condiTion, condiTion, condiTionIt’s true: All hair nourishing starts in the shower. I’m ridiculously particular with my choice of conditioner. One of my recommended picks is the Essential Moisturizing Frizz Free Conditioner.

Not only does it smell like roses and strawberries but it’s impressively potent, giving my hair a luxurious glow after just three washes. For the days I don’t feel lazy, I’d apply the accompanying hair mask.

sTep 2: recognise your condiTionIf you are suffering from hair loss, look no further. Find some big shades and head out to your local hair salon and grab yourself one of these. L’oreal has introduced its most powerful hair serum yet: Serioxyl promises to awaken even the most dormant of hair follicles and initiate a new phase of hair life cycle once again.

sTep 3: care ThroughouT The dayThere is no excuse for unkempt hair. This product calls out to me because I frequently dye my hair.

Most salons recommend not washing your hair two to three days after dyeing – an unbearable thought for me. Thank goodness for dry shampoo!

Hair spray is a crucial product if you are attempting a new hairstyle. There is no such thing as a gorgeous, messy bun – it is all hair spray!

sTep 4: fix iT quickIn our weather, it’s no surprise if your hair acts up and starts to frizz. Instead of going to the toilet and aggressively trying to comb it down, why not keep a small bottle of oil elixir in your bag and apply it whenever you see your hair misbehaving? It is fuss free and definitely more lasting.

sTep 5: glam iT up!Finally feeling a little more confident about your hair? Reward your hair with a generous spray of glitter and hit the clubs!

There is nothing more teasing than having your hair sparkle when the glitter catches the light’s reflection. Party on!

Hang OnBy removing the wall between the kitchen and living area, Ryan successfully made the home feel larger. A waist-high counter was built to provide additional surface for use in both the kitchen and the dining room. There is also a ceiling-suspended dish rack that utilises the height of the apartment.

Over in the adjacent dining room, the designer created a simple setup, crowned with a ceiling LED lamp that can emit different coloured lights for a variety of moods.

WHite On BlackIn keeping with the monochromatic theme requested by the owners, Ryan created a feature wall made from white laminates and black glass slabs.

“It looks quite simple and nondescript but the horizontal placement of the materials subtly add to the length of the room,” he explains. Matching furniture, such as the dark leather sofa and accompanying coffee table, bring the room to life.

SWeet BarSThe daughter’s room is spare on space and did not afford much room for fancy gestures.

Looking upward again, Ryan created a feature in the ceiling with rectangular cut-outs that are gently lit with cove lighting.

The rest of the room has been kept simple with a custom-built bed, in line with the owners’ request for a fuss-free children’s room.

Pack it inThe son’s bedroom is the smallest room in this 4-bedroom apartment but the designers still created a cosy space with all the basic necessities.

The built-in bed is tucked away to one side, with a padded headboard that opens up to reveal some storage shelves. The opposite side of the room is reserved for the study table and cabinets, all of which have been fitted for the son’s convenience.

turn tHe ligHtS OnEach bedroom in this apartment features different ceiling lights – a nice touch that Ryan incorporated to make each space stand out on its own.

For the master bedroom, the designer wanted a modern ceiling feature that can cast a gentle glow over the homeowners.

He carved out the false ceiling with a mix of recessed lighting and spotlights for both ambient and focused illumination, respectively.

What do you do when you want a home that is special, but simple? This was the exact question posed to Ryan Ng of Urban Habitat when this family asked him to design their home.

“They told me that they just wanted a simple monochromatic design, without any loud designs or bold colours. I still wanted to give them something special, so I designed each room to have its own unique ceiling light design,” says Ryan.

6Don’t Do this! it’s illegal!Every country has weird laws but this one truly astounded us. In Thailand, it’s illegal to leave the house without your underwear on!

We wonder how officials can even catch people in the act. By enforcing this law, wouldn’t they be breaking a multitude of privacy or harassment laws?

it’s also illegal to…If you knew all that, we bet you still don’t know this: It’s also against the law to step on Thai currency!

6 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE LAND OF SMILES

5Feet are also very importantYou must also be mindful of your feet in Thailand, but for different reasons than the head. Conversely, feet are considered lowly as they symbolise contact with dirt and human suffering.

So when you visit any temple or eatery here, never sit with your feet directly pointing at a statue or another person. To be safe, tuck your feet underneath your body.

3the term “siamese twins” also comes From thailanDThe term “Siamese twins” also originated from the Thais. The famous Thai-American brothers Chang and Eng Bunker were born joined at the chest, in 1811 in Thailand (then Siam). There is even a musical based on their story.

“Siamese twins” has since fallen out of use, and siblings with this condition are now more widely known as conjoined twins.

4heaDs are very important in thai cultureThere are a lot of unspoken rules and taboos surrounding the human head in Thailand. For example, all locals must keep their head lower than that of anyone senior to them, age- and work-wise.

For us tourists, keep in mind not to touch anyone – even a child – on the head. It’s also very disrespectful to pass objects over their heads.

We’re guessing that head placement is a matter of hierarchy, and no one likes to be out-ranked by inanimate objects.

Thailand may be one of Singaporeans’ top travel spots but how much do you really know about this kingdom of joy?

Many know and love Thailand as the Land of Smiles. After all, with an endless trove of bargain items, delicious street food, and relaxing massages, wouldn’t you be smiling away too?

But there are many hidden facts about this modern empire of enjoyment that have remained little known – until now. Here are six things about Thailand that we bet you didn’t know.

1Bangkok’s real name is…We believe that the name “Bangkok” was conceived for purposes of brevity, because, boy, is its original name a mouthful. Bangkok is known to locals as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon.

If you think that’s long, the city has an even longer ceremonial name: Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya MahadilokphopNoppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit.

It wouldn’t even fit into a tweet – we tried!

2siamese cats are native to thailanDNo, they aren’t named “Siamese” because they are all born as twins! This beautiful feline species is actually native to Thailand, which used to be called Siam.

Siamese cats are one of the first recognised breeds of the Oriental Shorthair family. In Thai, they are called “wichen-maat”, meaning “moon diamond”.

Can you imagine if someone tossed a handful of Thai notes or coins on the ground during rush hour? Would the locals scatter like panicked birds, or dive straight in for the money?

As much as I’d like to know, I don’t recommend you try this during your next trip!

As if its unspoilt nature isn’t enough, of the two islands, Phi Phi Leh is completely free of human inhabitants and Phi Phi Don, is without roads. There’s no hustle and bustle, no reason to be in a hurry at all.

Linger and marvel at this magnificent giant before it undergoes restoration

The Leshan Giant Buddha is so huge that one of its shoulders can support a basketball court! Stretching up to a whopping 71m in height, the Giant Buddha – or Da Fo – is the largest stone Buddha statue and the tallest existing ancient statue in the world.

Built during the Tang Dynasty in the year 713, and completed in 803, the statue depicts Maitreya, a Bodhisattva, in a serene and symmetrical sitting posture. Located in the heart of the scenic Mount Emei or Emei Shan (featured in wuxia fiction novels), it is a protected UNESCO World Heritage site in the Sichuan Province of China.

But, owing to the region’s rapid development, the Giant Buddha sports signs of wear. Not to worry, though, the government has promised restoration works.

So, visit this great sight before it gets covered in tarpaulin and scaffolding!

An Ancient And drAmAtic pAstIn the year 713, a Chinese monk named Haitong began construction of the Buddha. Haitong hoped that the Buddha would calm the turbulent waves in this area, making it safe for vessels travelling down the river.

However, when Haitong passed away, the construction was stalled due to insufficient funding. Around 70 years later, a kind military governor sponsored the project, and the Buddha was completed by Haitong’s

GettinG to the BuddhAGuided or solo, up close or from afar – there are many ways of appreciating the Giant Buddha when you’re in Mount Emei.If you’re up for it, you may scale the top of the mountain, where you can admire this magnificent work and its surroundings from a distance. Or, you may choose to go on a boat ride along the river, taking the same route that many ancient Chinese travellers sailed along.

Whichever itinerary you choose, keep in mind that the Giant Buddha is an extremely popular site, so start queueing before the site opens. Or, visit during off-peak seasons, avoiding the mid-year, year-end and Lunar New Year periods of course!

Your perspective and sense of scale will certainly be transformed.

Find out where to get your fix of luxury brands and traditional fashion

Stroll down the glitzy shopping belt of Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), and you can easily feel like a model strutting down a fashion runway.

KLCC, the city centre, is renowned for its sprawl of premium luxury boutiques, spanning acclaimed couture brands such

as Hermes, Kenzo, Louis Vuitton, and Malaysia’s very own Jimmy Choo. It’s also home to quality casual labels such as Guess and Bonia – and many other offerings that would make a regular shopaholic dizzy with excitement.

But it’s not just KLCC that can give you the high-street shopping experience you’ll love. There are many more places in Malaysia that will whisk you away into a whole new world of retail therapy!

FAshion hot spotsJust beside KLCC is one of Kuala Lumpur’s prime shopping hubs. Jalan Bukit Bintang

is home to some of the most popular malls in the city, such as Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Lot 10, Sungei Wang Plaza and Bukit Bintang Plaza.

At just a stone’s throw away from each other, it’s extremely easy to hop from one spree to the next! Offering hauls from upscale labels to street wear, these megamalls will keep you occupied for hours on end.

And the best part is, of course, uncovering the irresistible sales and bargains that are hidden within these malls. One can easily find designer perfume at 50 percent off, or even duty-free products at a fraction of the original retail price.

And Malaysia’s favourable foreign exchange rates (for us) just make splurging here so much more worth it.

Art in the hiGhest FormOne must get up close to truly appreciate the beauty of the Leshan Giant Buddha. Every detail carved into it (over 90 years, no less!) is a remarkable work of art. The Buddha’s coiled hair alone features 1,021 buns, so masterfully embedded that they look like an undivided whole.

Another architectural genius is the statue’s sophisticated drainage system hidden beneath the mud and stone. Like blood vessels running throughout the body, a system of pipes snake throughout the whole Giant Buddha, helping to channel rainwater into the river and reducing erosion.

But these drainage pipes aren’t made of metal or wood; they were artistically carved into various parts of the inner statue. It was no mean feat for the talented craftsmen of ancient China!
