Sholom Aleichem
Sholom Aleichem (1859 - 1916) was a popular humorist and author of Yiddish
literature, including novels, short stories, and plays.
Born Sholem Yakov Rabinowitz in Pereyaslav (near Kiev), Ukraine. He adopted the
pseudonym Sholom Aleichem, a common greeting meaning "peace be with you". Drawn
to writing as a youth, he worked as a teacher and a rabbi. He produced over forty
volumes, for the three million uneducated Russian Jews, whose only language was Yiddish.
His work has been widely translated. His translator, Hannah Berman, was Irish of Lithuanian descent. The popular
musical comedy "Fiddler on the Roof" (1964) is based on Sholom Aleichem's stories around his character Tevye.
Fleeing persecution, he left Russia in 1905, settling first in Switzerland, and later, in 1914, in the United States, where he
made his home in New York City. He died there at the age of 57.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl (1916 – 1990) was a British novelist, short story writer, fighter pilot and
screenwriter.
Born in Llandaff, Cardiff, to Norwegian parents, he served in the Royal Air Force during
the Second World War, in which he became a flying ace and intelligence agent, rising to
the rank of Wing Commander. Dahl rose to prominence in the 1940s with works for both
children and adults, and became one of the world's best-selling authors. He has been
referred to as "one of the greatest storytellers for children of the 20th century". In 2008
‘The Times’ placed Dahl sixteenth on its list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".
His short stories are known for their unexpected endings, and his children's books for their
unsentimental, often very dark humour.
Some of his notable works include ‘James and the Giant Peach’, ‘Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory’, ‘George's Marvellous Medicine’, ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’, ‘Matilda, The
Witches’, and ‘The Big Friendly Giant’.
His two-part autobiography ‘Boy’ and ‘Going Solo’ are a pure delight.
A bachelor is a man who comes to work each morning from a different direction.
Gossip is nature's telephone.
Life is a dream for the wise, a game for the fool, a comedy for the rich, a tragedy for the poor.
No matter how bad things get, you got to go on living, even if it kills you.
The rich swell up with pride, the poor from hunger.
His will contained the following injunction: "Let my name be recalled with laughter or not at all”.
W Somerset Maugham
William Somerset Maugham (1874 – 1965) was born to a wealthy solicitor in France. By
the time he was ten, both William's parents were dead and he was sent to live with his
uncle.
After an education at King's School, Canterbury, Maugham became a medical student at
St. Thomas Hospital, London. He used these experiences to help him write his first novel,
‘Liza of Lambeth’ (1897).
The book sold well and he decided to abandon medicine and become a full-time writer.
Maugham achieved fame with his play Lady Frederick (1907), a comedy about money
and marriage. By 1908 Maugham had four plays running simultaneously in London.
On the outbreak of the First World War, Maugham, now aged forty, joined a Red Cross
ambulance unit in France. During the war, Maugham's best-known novel, ‘Of Human
Bondage’ (1915) was published. This was followed by another successful book, ‘The Moon
and Sixpence’ (1919). Maugham also developed a reputation as a fine short-story writer.
‘Rain’, which appeared in ‘The Trembling of a Leaf’ (1921), was also turned into a successful
feature film. Popular plays written by Maugham include ‘The Circle’ (1921), ‘East of Suez’
(1922), ‘The Constant Wife’ (1926) and the anti-war play, ‘For Services Rendered’ (1932).
In his later years, Maugham wrote his autobiography, ‘Summing Up’ (1938) and works of
fiction such as ‘The Razor's Edge’ (1945), ‘Catalina’ (1948) and ‘Quartet’ (1949).
