Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Sunday Readings

CHARITY FASTING PRAYer

CARIDAD AYUNO ORACIÓN

It is not surprising that the first Sunday in Lent begins with temptation of Jesus in the desert where he is “led by the Spirit” to prepare himself for his supreme test – the Cross. This revelatory Gospel account sheds light upon God’s relationship with mankind, revealing the Divine’s desire to be a constant companion to His own creation. This special relationship is familial and intimate in nature requiring all parties to place their trust and obedience in the balance. It is faith in this relationship that will provide sustenance and victory while overcoming all obstacles. God reveals today that His love, mercy and strength is available to all through faith.

In today’s reading from the Book of Deuteronomy, this special relationship God has with His “Chosen People” is addressed. Their gratefulness is reflected by the offerings the people make to their God during the Feast of Weeks that Moses proclaims in the reading. The prophet expounds on the origin of this obligation by reminding all of the great gift their God bestowed upon them – deliverance! In return, Moses instills within their hearts their obligation to respond with gratitude and adoration, increasing and strengthening the already existing bond.

It is this same bond that is expressed in today’s second reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans. Paul proclaims to the newly converted Romans God’s love for them through their faith in the Risen Lord. The apostle reveals that their faith gains them justification while their profession grants them salvation. Using Scripture, Paul uncovers the great mystery that, within the Divine Family of Christ, there is no distinction between Greek and Jew. There is only one Lord and He is Lord of All. It is God’s way to come to all who call and put their faith in Him.

In today’s account of Jesus’ temptations in the desert, this same faith and trust in the Father of Creation is exhibited by Jesus. Jesus is led into the desert by the Spirit in order to prepare the Messiah for His greatest test – the Cross. Here, isolated and dispossessed of all material goods, the Christ is challenged by the great

tempter. The Lord is faced with similar temptations that our origi-nal ancestors were offered – pleasure, possessions and pride. In countering each temptation, the Messiah uses Sacred Scripture, demonstrating His reliance upon God and His faith in the Father. Jesus refuses to give into pleasure when he refuses to

change stone into bread. Christ, next, demonstrates His faith and trust in the Father with the refusal of all worldly kingdoms without having to endure the Cross. Finally, Jesus’ humility counters the temptation of pride with his final refusal to prove his Divinity on the Temple Mount. With these three temptations, the Messiah from God reveals His willingness to follow the Father’s Will and, so, restore order to the Creation Adam distorted. Most importantly, today’s Gospel revealed that, after submission to the Father, God provided Christ with the needs of his body and soul. In no way, was the Father going to leave the faith of His Son unattended.

Today, as the Church starts its first Sunday in Lent, Holy Mother the Church reminds her children that the Father will sustain all who place their faith and trust in Him. She desires us to recall our baptismal pledge that made us a part of His Family. As we prepare to disci-pline and curtail our worldly desires during this peni-tential season, we are encouraged to rely on His Holy Word. She encourages us, like Christ, to counter our temptations of pleasure, possessions and pride with a renewed knowledge and interested in the Word. During the next weeks, we are called back to the sacraments that lift our hearts, minds and souls to the Lord. We are reminded that through reconciliation and the Eucharist we are brought closer to the Lord. Strengthened through these sacraments, we are exhorted to live our life through almsgiving, prayer and fasting in order to experience the saving power of the Cross.

SAINTS OF LENT:

LEANDER OF SEVILLE March 13 St Leander of sixth century Spain is the one who introduced the recitation of the Nicene Creed at Mass. He saw it as a way to reinforce the faith in people and as an antidote against the heresy of Arianism, which denied the divinity of Christ. His own family was heavily influenced by Arianism but he stayed a fervent Christian. As a bishop, he worked to fight against heresy. After the death of an anti-Christian king he worked with the new king to restore Christianity and to renew a sense of morality. He also persuaded many Arian bishops to convert to Christianity. St. Leander is honored as a Doctor of the Church.
