up the open-beamed ceiling, which makes it feel like the stage set of a community theater. Raise the curtain with a spe-cialty cocktail. The Temptations Drink ($6.50) infuses gin with ginger and ice chips, a nice idea tainted by pimento-stuffed green olives. The mango mojito ($7) is a refreshing cross between smoothie and soda, with rum. Asked for an explanation of Indian-Chinese fusion, the server added nothing to what we could plainly read on the menu. Other

sources note the use of cumin, cori-ander and turmeric in these mostly Cantonese and Hakka dishes. Who can resist a dish called Chicken Lollipop? Five fried drumsticks ($9) stayed juicy inside heavy coats of batter, with hot Szechuan chili sauce for dipping. Long before fusion, there was chop suey. Some food scholars say it was an American invention, others say the name is Cantonese for “miscellaneous scraps,” basi-cally a stir-fry of whatever the restaurant has on hand. In a burst of nostalgia, we ordered the spicy vegetable variety ($11), a mess of sticky-sweet red sauce

over soggy thin noodles and very few vegetables, unless onion is a vegetable. We each took a few bites and left the rest. We said we didn’t like it. Still, no one offered a substitute, a complimentary dessert, or to take this expensive mistake off the bill. Hot garlic chicken ($11.50) was an improvement, a stir-fry of boneless chicken pieces with vegetables, mainly cabbage added to the onions. There must have

been a vegetable shortage on both of my nights at Temptations. Manchurian dry (without gra-vy) shrimp ($12.50) were fine, but Hakka noodles ($10) were dull chow mein to me. From the Indian menu, scallop masala ($8) was the best dish we tried. Tiny but tender bay scallops have a sweetness offset by tomato-onion sauce zinged with coconut and ginger. Scoop it up with the accompanying spicy pappadam wafers and plain nan, the flat bread. The lamb dish rogan ghosh

($14.50) featured tender chunks of meat in a thick, rich sauce fragrant with ginger, cloves and cardamom. Entrees are served with saffron rice. Temptations’ version of palak paneer ($9.50), the popular puree of spinach and herbs, also has a nice kick. Too bad it also had cubes of cheese so rubbery they squeaked. For dessert, the Indian favorite gulab jamun ($2.50) is like a hot donut hole in syrup. What could be sweeter? V

The executive producer of “Sex in the City” once said his show was about love,

and “the battlefield of trying to be in love, whether it be with another person or with yourself.” Strange words to describe that show, perhaps, but a perfect description of TheatreWorks’ new musical, “Emma.” The musical, adapted from Jane Austen’s novel, follows the spirited young Emma as she plays blindly at matchmak-ing, inspiring mishaps and mayhem in the name of a good old-fashioned romance. She’s clever and well-intentioned, but hopelessly naive. Much of the comedy derives from the girl’s romantic myo-pia which, when mixed with a healthy dose of arrogance, yields consis-tently amusing (if disastrous) results. The wit and modern sensibili-ties of Austen’s novel have lent it to easy adaptation, and the story has been turned into several stage productions as well as four films, among them the pop-cul-ture gem “Clueless.” Now, for the first time, it returns to the stage as a musical, under the artistic direction of TheatreWorks vet-eran Robert Kelley. It’s hard to overstate the success of this play. The music through-out is fantastic, Broadway-quality stuff: funny, moving, catchy, and somehow it manages to do all that without drifting into caricature or melodrama. Adaptor and com-

poser Paul Gordon infuses his songs with the hooks and riffs of pop music while keepings the lyr-ics emotionally sophisticated and the score musically so. The production values are simi-larly top-notch, with elegant and understated period costumes and a set which perfectly complements the emotional tenor of the scenes, both in lighting and design. In

one especially lovely interlude, the stage was bedecked with c a nd e l a br a s as yellow stars twinkled in the backdrop and leaves drifted down from the rafters. The human stars waltzing below were pretty in pink under the shifting stage lights. Even with all these assets, “Emma” might have been par for the course

without just the right title char-acter — which was found in Lianne Marie Dobbs. Playing Emma poses a serious acting challenge. Because of her impudence and unchecked self-assurance, the girl makes for a nightmarish Cupid. She flounces blithely about the stage, leaving a trail of wrecked relationships in her wake. Her good intentions cannot save her from reproach; nor can her artlessness, which could be taken for idiocy. How to make this girl like-able? Yet, if Emma fails to charm in spite of herself, the play fails with her. Dobbs rises to this challenge. A

magnetic presence on stage, her mischievous eyes glimmer as she croons her Cupid song, “He likes her / she likes him / I could be — a genius!” She is self-possessed, certainly. But we are as taken with her as she is with herself. Charisma aside, Dobbs gives Emma a believable emotional range, which she develops and expands over the course of the play. When Emma errs badly, her pretty face falls, brow knitting together in worry as the force of her mistake settles in. There is a dark timbre to her voice as she sings, achingly, against a lone violin, and a cer-tain weathered sophistication that comes over her, drawing her out of her busybody caricature. She is all the prettier for her understanding. Then the moment passes and she falls back into her wily ways — a little wiser, perhaps, but just as saucy as ever. That is the fun of Emma. As much as we laugh at her for her harebrained scheming, we relish her naivete. Emma has all the sen-sibilities of a modern girl, without the requisite dose of cynicism. “I thought I understood my heart,” she moans, to titters from the audience. She’s convinced herself that love is a pragmatic pursuit. We sigh — the poor girl. Dobb’s winning performance is perfectly complemented by that of male lead Timothy Gulan, who plays the dashing Mr. Knightley with pluck and hilar-ity. Emma and the incorrigible bachelor sing and out-sing each other in perfectly orchestrated, teasing duets. The chemistry is everywhere palpable. The supporting cast also turns in strong performances. Dani Mar-cus, as Emma’s beleaguered com-panion Harriet, has a knack for scene-stealing. Brian Herndon, as the unflappable vicar, and Travis Poelle, as the winsome Frank Churchill, are other standouts. V

MR. BEAN’S HOLIDAY ✭✭(Century 16, Century 12) Rowan Atkin-son romps from England to the French Riviera as Monsieur Bean, causing mayhem wherever he goes. A dumb-and-dumber script relies on Atkinson’s near-wordless comic shtick to carry the first act. The slight narrative turns on a single complication. Mr. Bean causes a film director to miss boarding the train to Cannes, leaving his upset son Stepan unaccompanied upon departure. The rest of the comedy of errors deals with the well-intentioned Englishman’s attempts to reunite the boy with his father. Along the way, Mr. Bean bumbles onto the set of a commercial directed by Carson Clay and starring winsome inge-nue Sabine (Emma de Caunes of “The Science of Sleep”) — both heading to the Festival de Cannes for the premiere of Clay’s feature. By the time all parties converge at the celebrated film festival and vacation spot, the satisfying climax seems too long in coming. Rated: G for general audiences. 1 hour. 30 minutes. — S.T.

THE NANNY DIARIES ✭1/2(Century 16, Century 12) Annie Braddock (Scarlett Johansson) is a fresh-faced col-lege grad with no idea of where she’s going or wants to go. A chance collision with a small boy in Central Park offers her a temporary opportunity to duck out of real-life and play nanny. Not just any nanny but an Upper East Side child-minder to a precocious tot named Grayer (Nicho-las Reese Art) whose neglectful parents are too preoccupied to realize their hectic lives are a virtual train-wreck. No surprises here. As Annie and Grayer develop a tight bond, she is disheartened with the pain and suffering Grayer suffers at the hands of his self-absorbed folks. How to take pleasingly penned satire and butcher it for the big screen? Soak it in cliches; base the narrative on a series of stupid stereotypes; and film the lot with maximum telegraph-ing and clunky transitions. Add a chirpy voice-over declaring the entire operation an anthropological field study, and you’ve got yourself a summer dust-eater. Rated: PG-13 for language and mature themes. 1 hour, 45 minutes. — J.A.
