A Message from the President s I write my final, yes final Mishpachtenu, I would like to follow my theme of thanking the people that have made my presidency so successful. In my last article, I
thanked the enormous effort that is put forth from all of our wonderful volunteers. Now, I would like to thank our highly dedicated staff, past and present, who always show their dedication to Beth Shalom. And yes, I will be naming names. Thank you to: Our administration office team, past and present, of
Dale, Honey, David, Judy, Jill, Lonnie, Jen, Michelle, Carrie, Patti, Ryan, Evan, Carolyn and Scott.
Our Early Learning Center Team led by Jenn, Maria, and Kara.
Our JJEP head Liron. Our current maintenance staff of Dave, Sis, Boris,
Darrelle, Luci, Mark and Billy (ret.). And of course our clergy, Rabbi Levin, Rabbi Staitman,
Rabbi Donni Aaron, Rabbi Werbow, and Cantor Ben. These are the people who make or have made everything happen successfully at Beth Shalom. I am forever thankful that I had the privilege of working with all of these dedicated people. I would also like to take the time to thank all of you, our
congregants. Thank you for trusting in me to take care of our Shul. Thank you for welcoming me into your lives, in good times and in bad. I cannot end my presidency without thanking the most important people in my life, my family. Thank you, Nicole, Alex, Andrew, Brad, Eric, and Shayna. Without your love, understanding and support, I would not have been able to do this job. My hope is that as I leave the presidency of Congregation Beth Shalom, we are poised to enter our 100th successful year in 2017, and we will be prepared for another successful 100 years beyond that. Wishing everyone a wonderful summer.

A Message from Rabbi Levin
abbi Seth Adelson and
Congregation Beth Shalom: A Great
Shidduch!
I arrived here at Beth Shalom about nine
months ago: it’s been a fulfilling, challenging,
and fruitful time so far, and I’m so glad I’m not quite out the door
yet and we still have time to work together for the good of Beth
Shalom.
Your participation in the Rabbinic Search process was impressive
and substantive. The inspiring stories you shared in our
Congregational Conversations helped the members of the
Search Committee to define the qualities they sought among the
many rabbinic applicants. Your extensive participation in our
three rabbinic weekends, and the insights you provided in your
evaluation forms, meant that your impressions and perceptions
and reactions to the candidates were invaluable information
used by the Search Committee as they formulated their
recommendation to the Board of Trustees.
You have one more critical task in creating a bond with your new
rabbi: Come and add your voice to those of your fellow Beth
Shalom members and participate in the discussion and vote on
Rabbi Adelson’s appointment at our Congregational Meeting on
Wednesday, May 20th at 7:30 pm (registration begins at 7:00
pm).
I am so happy for you, and for Rabbi Seth Adelson, that you have
found each other. Over a year ago, I spoke at my own rabbinic
candidate weekend about the challenges of finding the right
rabbi for the right congregation: it’s like making a shidduch, a
successful match between life partners. It is the nature of life
and community that you and your new rabbi will face challenges
together. Should you vote to bring Rabbi Adelson to Beth
Shalom as your next Senior Rabbi, I am confident that your
relationship will grow and deepen and mature over time.
I read recently about a cartoon in The New Yorker: A caveman is
speaking to his young son, saying “When I was your age, things
were exactly as they are now.”
We don’t get to say that anymore. One generation of rabbis
does not get to say that to the following generation of rabbis
anymore. One generation of synagogue leaders don’t get to say
that to the next generations of synagogue leaders. All this
means is that you and Rabbi Adelson will be sailing through
some uncharted waters together as you work to discern Beth
Shalom’s future. It may be unsettling at times, but the journey
will also be exciting and inspiring because you’ll have each other
to rely on, collaborate with, grow with.
Over the next few months, we’ll also be preparing ourselves, you
and I, for our own parting of the ways. I am not going to say my
“goodbyes” in this message, I’ll wait for the summer, but it’s
never too early to express my gratitude and appreciate for the
warm welcome, the appreciation, the collaborative journey we’re
enjoying this year. I am so happy I have had this year with you.
L’shalom,
Rabbi Amy Levin

A Message from the Early Learning Center Director
an you believe that the end to the school year is quickly
approaching? The last two months of our school year are always filled with exciting celebrations. We began to play outside and enjoy the fresh air again, had a Passover play before the break, and celebrated Yom Ha’atzmaut. The Pre-K are beginning to practice for their graduation ceremony. They will come together to perform songs and dances with the friends they have made in their class, and will celebrate moving up to Kindergarten. Some of our Pre-K students have been with us since infancy, and the bonds that they have developed with the educators and with each other are strong. Recognizing each other and the impact that we’ve had on each other’s lives is a beautiful way to wrap up the year. Some of the children are graduating and some are heading straight into summer! This summer’s camp will focus on we are going “Growing Up… Book by Book.” Each week we will explore a new Author/Illustrator. On our list: Shel Silverstein, Eric Carle, Maurice Sendak, Bill Martin Jr., Laura Numeroff, Mercer Mayer, Richard Scarry, and Sandra Boynton. Each person has contributed so much to our learning
that it is a great opportunity for our children to learn more about the authors behind the books that we know, love, and read each day. We teach the roots of Judaism, the traditions, and how to love each other. We create a strong foundation in every child, and that is something that truly makes our school outstanding. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with the children of the Beth Shalom community, open the doors of learning for them, and see them grow. Thank you for your commitment to our school and community.

A Message from the J-JEP Director
he Joint Jewish Education Program (JJEP) concluded another successful year with 135 student participants and 12 Madrichim.
This year included many firsts:
Our 4th through 7th graders enjoyed optional electives
such at Torah Yoga, Israeli Recess Games, Cooking through the Bible, Song Parodies, and Jewish World Watch.
We had a JJEP community consecration for all students new to our program.
We made some big changes to our Hebrew program, by offering four (4) a la carte options for all 2nd through 7th grade students to participate in, which included an online option. We also incorporated DVASH (Dynamic Vision for the Active Study of Hebrew) in our 2nd grade’s Sunday morning classes.
We came together as a JJEP community (including parents and siblings) and had a lively morning of Tfillah and text study.
Our madrichim (high school students, aides in JJEP classrooms) spent their Sunday afternoons studying Pedagogy. Several students earned Teaching Certificates in Elementary Religious School Education.
We invited the greater community to join us at Latkepalooza and enjoyed having our friends from the Torah Lishma Community (Tree of Life/Or L’Simcha) in
attendance. The 5th annual Latkepalooza was a huge success, and raised about $2,000 for JJEP.
The Song Parody class posted three wonderful songs that can be found on our website (JJEP.org).
The 4th grade planned engaging and innovative activities for all K-7 JJEP students.
Our Celebration of Learning was a true culmination of learning and move-up ceremony as our 6th and 7th graders joined Molly May in leading the service.
Most importantly, we finally felt like one whole JJEP community, regardless of synagogue affiliation.
Yasher Koach and Todah Rabah to all the educators for a phenomenal JJEP year!
Kol tuv,
Liron Lipinsky

A Message from the Sisterhood
hat an exciting time for our synagogue! We will have a new rabbi joining our Beth
Shalom family this summer and the anticipation of celebrating our 100th anniversary. Beth Shalom Sisterhood was recently honored at the Central Great Lakes Regional Conference in April for 95 years of affiliation with Women’s League of Conservative Judaism. This was and is a great honor for our sisterhood. It’s been a busy year and a very successful year with many exciting events. We began the year with a theatre outing last fall and will end with an Open Sisterhood meeting on May 14. Our “Coupons for Vets Program” is now over, but we were able to send over $30,000 in coupons to help military families stretch their budget. This year, Sisterhood has partnered with our Men’s Club and other groups for events, including our speaker, Dr. Elaine Berkowitz, our Preschool for CPR training, JJEP for Latkepalooza and Hadassah, Shoshana Group, for an afternoon with Ilene Winn-Lederer. We have increased our membership, organized challah and soup sales, sent gifts to our colleges students, held Hanukkah programs at Beth Shalom and at Schenley Gardens, a senior citizen residence. We have also knitted for the homeless, participated in our Sisterhood Book Club, volunteered at our Purim Carnival, held a fashion show, visited a local art gallery and honored three
valued members at Sisterhood Shabbat and our Torah Fund Brunch. A huge thank you goes to our outstanding volunteers that have helped so much this year. Soon we will need our shul’s gardeners and our auxiliary committees to help again to beautify the synagogue grounds. Last summer and fall we weeded, cleaned out beds and planted with the help of Hecht Landscaping, many members and families. An “all call” will go out soon to keep the weeds away this summer. Last year, we usually met Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. Of course, we are always flexible with one’s time and weeding can happen whenever you are free. The job will be much easier as we have already done the hardest work. So if you are looking for something to do for a few hours a week, please join in the fun. We want to wish everyone a wonderful Shavout and summer!

A Message from the Men’s Club reetings from the Beth
Shalom Men's Club. This has
been a quiet spring. We had a
tremendous response from our
Yom Hashoah candle program. As
the number of living voices
dwindles, this effort will help us to never forget. In
April, we sponsored our annual Men's Club Shabbat.
Many thanks to Sandy Zaremberg and Milt Eisner for
arranging the participation of our members and to
Rabbi Staitman for his inspirational words. Thanks to
Zur Goldblum (Pomegranate Catering) for a tasty
luncheon. It was also an honor to have the Israeli
veterans as our guests. On May 17, we will replace the
flags at our veterans’ graves at Beth Shalom
Cemetery in Shaler Twp. Please come and help. We
start about 9:30 in the morning. Two years goes by
quickly. I would like to thank all who have helped me
through these two years. I hope our successes will
multiply with our future leadership. Thank you for the
opportunity to serve.
B’shalom,
Marty Kline

A Message from the Youth Director pring has sprung! Purim came and went, Passover cleaning and chametz gorging has
passed, and we look towards Shavuot as we celebrate our Torah
and the blessings it has given to us. Before Moses could reach the blessing of Torah, he had to climb a mountain. If you’re an avid hiker, you will easily recall the burn in your legs and lungs, the cuts on your hands from using rocks to propel yourself upwards, and the ultimate feeling of triumph as you reach the summit. No doubt Moses felt all of these things as he climbed Mount Sinai. Yet with each climb, we must remember to stop for a moment to feel the cool breeze against our backs. Or to stop to watch a tiny spider weave an intricate web. Perhaps we’re most taken aback by the smell of wet moss and dirt. Those tiny blessings are what make the summit that much sweeter. I do not claim to have reached the summit yet, I am still on a very long and winding climb up. However, I have encountered some of the most amazing blessings along the way. I have experienced the awe of our kids as they come together to share their lives
in a Jewish space. I have been welcomed in to the web of families that make up this shul. I have been a part of some truly incredible moments. It is this particular story of Moses that I take with me as I leave my all too short time with Beth Shalom. We all have a mountain to climb, you, me, our kids. Whatever lay at the summit, it is the moments where we stop to look around that make the journey. Thank you, each of you who made my stop here everything I could have asked for. May every one of you have a breeze at your back, beautiful scenery around you, and a friend by your side as you continue your climb.

Ryan Tuchin

BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE
Dear fellow congregants, We have begun preparing the Book of Remembrance for the coming year’s Yizkor Services. If you put an entry in last year, look for your personalized form in the mail in the coming weeks. If you have not memorialized loved ones you have lost in the Book of Remembrance, these are a few reasons, among many, why we do so:
An entry in the Book of Remembrance is a meaningful and tangible way to remember and honor our departed loved ones.
If you are not able to make it to shul for Yizkor services, you may take a book home for personal reflection and to share with family members.
The Jewish people have remembered their departed in this manner for more than a thousand years. The funds derived from your contribution help maintain lifecycle events at Congregation Beth Shalom,
which serve you and your entire community. We hope you will consider participating this year. If you have any questions, call the synagogue office: 412-421-2288.
Sincerely, Aviva Lubowsky and Mo Goldberg Book of Remembrance Co-Editors
Write your own name(s) and the name(s) of your beloved departed and their relation to you as in the following example. This is the format for all entries in the Book of Remembrance.
Example: YOUR NAME(S) HERE . . . . . . . . . . . . . Name and Name Example, beloved parents Another Example, beloved father
(Make checks payable to Congregation Beth Shalom.) Please return this form along with your payment by June 19, 2015.
