Math AVID Summer Bridge

In STEM class (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) this summer, we are focusing on the engineering strand. Students will be asked to test an object then redesign the object under certain constraints. During the first week of STEM, we are working through a Twirling Toy Challenge. During this challenge the students will be exploring how forces and air resistance affect falling objects.

STEM

AVID students will be working with their tribes this week to learn the ropes of taking Cornell Notes and using Costa’s Level of Thinking to guide learning. Topics we will cover this week include fractions, decimals, percents, rational numbers, ratios and proportions, fraction operations, and integers. We will also be playing BINGO, participating in a scavenger hunt, and engaging in tribal challenges! One tribe will be declared the winner at the end of summer school!

This year, at Xtreme Summer Academy, students will continue to learn good math practices and how to create a ritual of showing their work. Some of the topics that will be covered will include area models, set models, linear models, recognizing equivalent fractions, and using various operations to solve fractional equations. Students will have the opportunity to work in teams and partners to strengthen their skills through the use of games and group activities. For more information on student daily activities, please check student bags for daily objective statements.
