by Carl MillesSeveral annual events many o them centered

on perorming and visual arts draw visitors toAnn Arbor. One such event is the Ann Arbor ArtFairs, a set o our concurrent juried airs held ondowntown streets, which began in 1960. Sched-uled on Wednesday through Saturday in thethird week o July, the airs draw upward o hala million visitors. One event that is not related tovisual and perorming arts is Hash Bash, held onthe first Saturday o April, ostensibly in supporto the reorm o marijuana laws. It has been cele-brated since 1971.

A person rom Ann Arbor is called an "AnnArborite", and many long-time residents callthemselves "townies". Te city itsel is ofencalled A ("A-squared") or A2 ("A two"), and, lesscommonly, ree own. Recently, some youthshave taken to calling Ann Arbor Ace Deuce orsimply Te Deuce. With tongue-in-cheek reer-ence to the city's liberal political leanings, some

occasionally reer to Ann Arbor as Te Peo-ple's Republic o Ann Arbor or 25 square milessurrounded by reality, the latter phrase beingadapted rom Wisconsin Governor Lee Drey-us's description o Madison, Wisconsin. AnnArbor sometimes appears on citation indexes asan author, instead o a location, ofen with theacademic degree MI, a misunderstanding o theabbreviation or Michigan.
