What a whirlwind week we have ahead of us…beginning this past weekend with Phil’s Retirement Bash! We have never planned a retirement ceremony before so this was a first. Of course, it is so easy to put your heart in it when you are celebrating such a fabulous gentleman/teacher/coach/mentor/friend as Phil. We were not surprised that well over 150 people came to share the love. Alumni, community supporters, parents, students and staff all united in our admiration and best wishes for a man we admire and respect! Mayor Jere Wood formally proclaimed May 4, 2014 as Phil Parker Day. Students and staff prepared books of memories. We announced that his wife, Anne, has established the Phil Parker Art Scholarship that will go to a graduating senior with artistic talent and plans to enter the creative arts field. Contributions to this fund can be sent to TCS specifically designated for the Phil Parker fund. We look forward to the first recipient at this year’s ceremony! I have enjoyed highlighting our sports phenoms all year and we are winding down the season for everything. Last week I congratulated our tennis stars who have shown extraordinary talent and grace under pressure. We also were in the throes of State Track competition but I did not have all of the results last week by the time our WP went to print. Once again our Cougar athletes displayed their considerable talent and resilience! Two high school girls, Pamela Lalo and Sabrina Yousef, finished in the top ten. Molleah Holder, Emory Shulse, Asha Jones and Claire Wylie also received accolades by placing in the top sixteen in their specific meets! Our boys placed fifth in state with veteran leader, Arthur Leach, taking the gold in the 3200m run and all-around athlete, Chris Taura, earning silver in the 3200m and the 1600m. We have a growing number of young men whose track talents are turning heads. KJ Powell, Josh Wood, Marquis Victor, Harrison Rowell, Jordan Norman, Andrew DesRoches, Patrick Thompson, Alex Lee and George Barham rounded out our team wins by placing in a number of events. Our Cross Country and Track teams are populated by a large number of students for whom athletics was not a priority in the past, but who have found structure and challenge in a sport that demands dedication and sacrifice. Hats off to our coaches, in all sports, for their unwavering commitment to good sportsmanship, skills and team building! Special thanks to the staff and parents who devote an inordinate amount of time to travel to Albany, Valdosta, Macon and more to participate in, sometimes, grueling weather and long, long meets to support our teams! We all recognize the impact that participating in a sport, drama production or other talent based activity has on the overall growth and confidence of our students. Without your partnership we could not host our concession stand, print our programs, travel with our teams or send the message to our teens that what they do is important. As we close out this season, please know that your assistance, encouragement, support and presence have made a huge difference to our small but mighty campus. We look forward to next year’s partnerships and fun! Check those calendars and plan to be all about TCS for the next few weeks!

YOUR INPUT NEEDED
Your feedback is extremely important to us. As we close out
the year, please take a minute to give us your assessment of
your experience here at TCS and suggestions for improvement.
These surveys are handled confidentially and the results are
tallied. We will share them with you in a brief report later this
year. Your student will also complete a survey here at school.
In addition to collecting much needed data about the quality of
our services and new ideas on how to make our program even
better, we are also preparing for our five year re-accreditation
next year. The survey results will play a big part in our
responses to some of the standards we are required to meet.
Thank you for partnering with us this year to provide the very
best for your child. Thank you, also, for communicating with
us, through this survey, in a manner that can be quantified and
used for program improvements.
The link to the survey is at the bottom of this letter. We really
want to hear from you!
Thank you,
Jacque

TCS GIFT POLICY
It is that time of year when parents begin looking for end of the year
gifts for their child’s favorite teacher. We know the drill and we are not
a fan! The desire to show appreciation during the holiday season, for a
special occasion or at the end of the school year is undeniable.
However, there is a built in morale buster hidden in those packages.
When it is a team who has delivered the services, many team members
are left out (the Art teacher fills her car and the math teacher and
receptionist go home empty handed). We realize the joy in our jobs is
not about what we get from others, but the physical exchange of a
plethora of gifts distributed in a somewhat random fashion does not
build team morale, or even adequately reflect the true nature of the
impact of every individual in a school community. In addition, there are
many families who feel obligated to join in the giving spree even
though the time and economic impact is burdensome.
At TCS we prefer to approach appreciation from a very different angle.
We feel the gratitude and support all year long. Our parents are very
good about that. When special times arise, instead of encouraging
individual gifts, we prefer our parents send notes (or notes from the
student) that can be kept as reminders. If families wish to do more, our
PAC has a fund that is specifically designed to provide school wide
recognition in the form of gift cards and year end cash gifts. Your PAC
leadership will post instructions for year-end staff gifts very soon.
Please feel free to talk with me about suggestions or concerns related
to this school wide policy. Thank you for respecting our culture and
helping us honor all of our staff, as we honor all of our students!
With the end of the school year quickly approaching, we know many
parents want to provide a special gift of appreciation to our Cottage
School teachers and staff. At TCS, individual gifts are discouraged, so the
Parents Association (PAC) offers an opportunity – for those wishing to
participate – to give a gift of cash. The PAC will collect contributions
from parents and will divide the total amount equally among all teachers
and staff. The gift will be given to the staff with a note of thanks at the
Year End Luncheon, Wednesday, May 28th
.
If you would like to participate, please send cash or checks in an envelope
to the school office marked “PAC Year-End Gift” by Wednesday,
May 21st. Checks should be made payable to TCS PAC. If you have any
questions, please contact Kim Kitzler at [email protected].
HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU GIVE?
Any amount you’d like to give is appreciated. Contributions range
from $10 to $500, with the average being $100.
Please respect TCS’s long standing tradition
and refrain from giving individual gifts.
Thank you!

Everyone Attends!
ATTENTION HS Parents and Students: In an effort to help our teenagers learn the concept of Sick/Personal Leave in the work place, we have a system that tracks their attendance hours as if they were on the job. Each student earns 8 hours (1 day) every 4 weeks and can use or accumulate up to 32 hours (4 days) per semester. If they are absent more than their allotted hours, they make them up. If they save the hours, they can cash them in for days off during exams- like we save days for vacation at work. Please check accumulated/negative attendance hours with your student, and verify with their homeroom teacher during weekly calls. Students who have saved hours are eligible to take early exams and buy-off their exam days for an extended break! Students who are eligible to buy off exam days will bring home an Exam Buy-off Form with their positive hours listed and they will need your signature to be able to take advantage of this privilege. If your student has negative hours, it is imperative that they make-up negative hours prior to Saturday School on May 17, 2014. If they fail to do so, they will have to attend Saturday School. Students who owe hours and who do not attend Saturday School will be suspended for the three days following May 17th per our school policy. This means that students will be suspended from school and miss all of their Spring final exams. For students who owe hours, they should make-up at least one hour every day by coming in early from 7 to 8 A.M. or staying after school from 3 to 4 P.M. We strongly encourage them to make up their hours daily, so they can avoid Saturday School all together!
Thank you,
H.S. Graduation 2014
Commencement is quickly approaching, and we are sure you all want to reserve dates on your calendars! Please watch for more specific details and directions in upcoming Wednesday Packets. Here is an overview of the festivities: Photo Memento: due by Monday, May 19th. We will continue the tradition of displaying photo memento boards prepared by their families. Each family displays a memory board of their senior at graduation. Sizes and styles vary – some are just photos, others are done in the style of scrapbooks. Just have some fun with it! Graduation Rehearsal: for students only Wednesday, May 21st from 12:30 P.M.-2:30 P.M. in The Cougar Center. Senior students must be a part of rehearsal in order to participate in the ceremony on Friday, May 23rd. Students who would like to speak must submit speech outline to Jennifer by April 3rd. Graduation Speech Rehearsal: Wednesday, May 21st from 2:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M. This is only for students who are speaking at Graduation. Graduation Luncheon: Thursday, May 22nd at 12:15 P.M. at The DoubleTree Hotel to celebrate with your family & friends! Each Senior and one adult are included. For any additional attendees the cost will be $20.00 per person, and we encourage you to bring the whole gang! Each student must have at least one adult present. Please make your payment by May 2nd so that we can plan accordingly. We will distribute caps & gowns, honor cords and senior achievement pins for graduation at the luncheon! RSVP by filling out and returning the attached invitation to Ivan Plastiak. Please make checks payable to TCS. If you have any questions, feel free to call or email Ivan at [email protected] or 678-250-5110. Graduation Ceremony: Friday, May 23rd at The Cougar Center. All seniors must arrive by 10:00 A.M., dressed in their graduation outfits, with ironed gowns on a hanger, and graduation caps. The ceremony will begin at 11:00 A.M. A reception will immediately follow in The Cougar Center. There are no tickets and no limit to the number of people you can bring to celebrate!
