I would say “take a deep breath” but we would all start coughing! The next few weeks will ring in Spring with the yellow dust we all dread. However, last Saturday, a hardy troupe of volunteers dug, planted, mulched and trimmed their way into our hearts! Thank you, Campus Appreciation Team, for the time and sweat you invested! Keeping up with the 23 acres is difficult enough, but, we have been a man down in our maintenance department now for over 6 months. As many of you know, Steven, our landscape staff member, suffered a concussive whiplash injury on October 1st when a distracted driver rear ended him. He is still recuperating from the resultant surgery and will require several more weeks before he can begin to ease in. Of course we miss him, but the winter months are less demanding. Now that everything is springing up, some wanted and some unwanted, there is more to do than Suroy can manage. And he can manage a lot! So the efforts of our Campus Appreciation Team are truly appreciated!! I am very excited to announce, on behalf of the TCS Board of Directors, that our efforts to raise the money to replace Building A have been successful and construction on the classroom addition to the Cougar Center begins soon after school is completed in May! We never intended to keep Building A this long. We were prepared to demolish it and build the new addition in 2008, but when the economic crisis occurred, we knew the timing was not good. Every year we prayed we would be able to begin fundraising for this capital improvement and every year we saw no hope. This year, with a few months left to capture the challenge grant we had received years earlier, we cautiously took the leap! We have been so pleased with the response from the families who stepped up to answer the call! It is not easy for anyone at this time, but those who know the magic that occurs in the classrooms support our decision to invest the limited funds we have in our teaching staff and programs. We would love to have the money for lots of improvements, but we do not put buildings over our committed and talented staff who create the daily successes that build such positive futures for our students. Dreams are answered at TCS not because of our fancy trappings (although they would be nice) but because of our intentional attention to our students and the efficient delivery of professional skills. That’s what I love about our parents! Other schools may have showplaces and point to manicured spaces. We have more modest digs and we point to our students and their accomplishments! Not that we don’t dream of improved facilities. We do. And we invest in them when we can. But we never pass up a chance to do what is best for our students and support the staff who give so much. In terms of our students and our setting…we are not about the wrapping. We are about the substance and the promise! Stay tuned for more details about the new building!!

NEW “Parents Only” Section On The TCS Website
PLUS Parent Survey Information
A new “Parents Only” section is now available on The Cottage School website. In the future, this area of the website will be used for information that is either helpful or important for parents of our enrolled students to see, but not necessarily students or others who are not currently involved with the school. This area will be password protected and will require that you register as a new user, just one time. You can do so at this link: http://cottageschool.org/school/?page_id=9525. Following the registration, activation will be required at the school before you can access this area. Activation should happen within one business day (or sooner). After your registered account is activated, you will have access to the “Parents Only” section at any time. The first use of this new section will be for our Annual Parent Survey. This anonymous survey provides crucial information to the school and it is extremely important that it is completed. Please take the time to register as a new user of the Parents Only Section and then once your account is activated, please complete the Annual Parent Survey. Any questions regarding registration, activation, or the Parent Survey may be directed to Vinette Goodman at [email protected] or at 770-641-8688 extension 5125.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY TRAINING SESSION
When: Thursday, April 25 @ 2:00 PM-3:00 PM
Where: Media Center
What: Assistive Tech Training Session
Note: This training will present the same information as previous
trainings
Who: Middle School and High School parents and students who use or
want to use assistive software, either at home or on campus. This
information will be the same as the previous trainings held this year,
so sign up only if:
A) you’ve not attended a training yet and want to learn, or
B) you want or need a refresher.
Why: As part of the TCS community, you have access to powerful software
tools that will take what’s on the computer screen and read it out
loud. You can also use programs that will let you type answers to
worksheets.
However, we all get frustrated with new programs when we don’t
know what the buttons do. So, come to the training, learn what the
buttons do, and use the programs to improve your understanding of
textbooks, handouts, and webpages, and to make filling in the blanks
on worksheets easier.
