A whirlwind week with more to follow! The Youth Day Parade was really terrific. It is awesome for our kids to be a part of something so big and so full of energy! Not sure how many floats (I guess a hundred) and spectators participated, but it was a great day! Of course, the MS won First Place again this year…I believe we have an uninterrupted record since we began participating! Phil’s leadership is fabulous…I think we all would follow him anywhere! The 5K route was small potatoes! The parents and students who manned the float were awesome! Since we started the school almost 29 years ago, we have watched Roswell grow from a small town to a city! However, the Youth Day Parade makes it feel like a small town again! Kudos to the staff and students who created the idea, implemented the plan and breathed the enthusiastic spark that made all the difference!! Kudos, also to our valiant and talented Girls’ Volleyball Team! They participated in the tournament this weekend, but were short on team members. They played their hearts out and did really well. As did our Soccer teams! New winter sports teams are forming now, so the fun continues! I have not had a chance to relay to you the details about my experience with the WWII veterans last week. I cannot begin to tell you what an honor it was to spend an entire day with the Best of the Best! The Roswell Rotary Club partnered with Coldwell Banker to sponsor and accompany sixty eight WWII veterans on a day trip to Washington, D.C. We left before dawn with a police escort and passed through a crossed ladder salute given by the Roswell Fire Department. We landed with a water cannon salute at the airport. Upon disembarking, we were greeted by a 40’s swing band and an airport full of cheering and flag waving crowds. From there the day was spent on buses going from the WWII Memorial, Korean and Vietnam Veterans memorials, the statue of Iwo Jima and ended with the solemn ceremony of the changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. For the most part, our group was a collection of strangers. However, the bonds of the brother soldiers, from all ranks, branches and theaters, were bound by the ties of sacrifice and patriotism. There were no barriers on this trip…there was an abundance of stories, smiles, memories and hugs! One couple was the army nurse who had married the wounded soldier she cared for some sixty seven years ago….the story I will never forget is the story of the two Jewish brothers, twins, whose mom had requested special permission for them to serve together. As their platoon marched outside of Berlin they smelled an aroma that reminded them of the scalded chickens their mother had prepared when they were children. The platoon leader knew they had to follow the scent. When they arrived, they found themselves at Dachau, took their places to attack and liberated the death camp! I get chills just recalling their story! How I wish I could have brought each and every one of our TCS kids with me! All day I was haunted by the missed opportunity to learn unforgettable and life changing lessons from the men and women who made history! If you have a veteran in your family, encourage your teens to look beyond the wheel chairs, walkers and rough exteriors…ask questions and enter into their world of heroism, humanity and humility!

ASSISTIVE TECH TRAINING NIGHT

When: October 24, 2012 @ 5:30 P.M.

Where: Media Center

What: Assistive Tech Training Night

Note: This training will present the same information as the training

session held on September 4, 2012.

Who: Middle School and High School parents and students who use or

want to use assistive software, either at home or on campus. This

excludes those who attended the first training night because the

information will be the same.

Why: As part of the TCS community, you have access to powerful software

tools that will take what’s on the computer screen and read it out

loud. You can also use programs that will let you type answers to

worksheets.

However, we all get frustrated with new programs when we don’t

know what the buttons do. So, come to the training, learn what the

buttons do, and use the programs to improve your understanding of

textbooks, handouts, and webpages, and to make filling in the blanks

on worksheets easier.

Stay away from costumes that are gory, …and may unnecessarily gross people out.

Make sure your costume is tasteful, no extra skin showing, nothing suggestive,

no weapons, no live animals as props, no inappropriate idols, no inappropriate slogans or references to drugs, alcohol or terrorism.

Be careful with make-up, remember you will be wearing it all day & heavy make-up tends to smear and get very messy!

Bring a school outfit with you to school

in case you have to change out of your costume.

Kicking for Autism The Organization A brief synopsis…

Kicking For Autism is an organization in partnership with Autism Speaks founded by a group of Atlanta teens representing various high schools in the metro area. The Junior Board is composed of 11 teens hoping to make a difference in the lives of children with high functioning Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.

The idea for this organization stems from founding member Noah Newman’s experience of growing up with a brother who has high functioning autism as well as his love for soccer. He believes that soccer can provide the structure for kids to engage socially and athletically in a meaningful way.

With the start of this organization, these 11 teenagers hope to make an impact in the lives of other children across the Atlanta area and provide these children with an outlet for developing social and athletic skills.

Our first clinic of the 2012–2013 will be SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27 from 1:30–3:30pm at the MJCCA. Clinics will be run

by youth soccer coaches, speech pathologists to help facilitate the clinics, teen volunteers

from the Junior Board, and teens from various other high schools. The teens plan to

hold soccer clinics once a quarter with Mellow Mushroom donating pizza and

Kroger donating water and snacks for the event. Other sponsors include Foot Solutions and JB Paz Productions.

M.S. Cougar Basketball Meeting

Hello Everyone,

There will be a meeting for the Middle School Cougar Basketball team, both Boys and Girls, on:

to discuss the upcoming season, assessments, team rules and expectations.

Practice will officially start on 10/30/12 from 3:15pm-5:00pm.

The practice schedule will be the same each week with practices being held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and

Thursday from 3:15pm-5:00pm. Pick up time is 5pm, except on game days.

Physicals must be current in order to play in League games.

Senior Trip

Our senior trip has been planned for May 4

th – May 9

th, 2013. It will be a 5 day cruise to the Bahamas

aboard the Carnival Sensation. We will sail out of Port Canaveral, Florida, making stops at Freeport and Nassau and enjoy one day at sea (these stops are subject to change). This will be a wonderful opportunity for the seniors to spend time together, making lasting memories. We would like all of our seniors to be able to participate in this event. But, this trip should be considered a privilege, something to be earned. For a student to be eligible to participate in this trip, they will need to be current with all of their schoolwork, with satisfactory grades in each of their classes. Their academic success must come first! In addition, we expect each student to demonstrate mature, responsible and trustworthy behavior throughout the school year. Student safety will be our primary concern and we will do everything in our power to ensure this. Lastly, seniors who plan on going on the cruise must have $115 in savings at TCS. The cost of the trip will be approximately $1000.00. This includes port charges, taxes and all gratuities. This also includes round trip transportation between The Cottage School and Port Canaveral on a motor coach. The payments will be collected in three parts: 1. $250.00 deposit ($125 refundable until Dec 16) due 10/25/12 2. $350.00 payment due 12/6/12 3. $400.00 (approx.) payment due 2/1/13 There will be partial refunds available under some circumstances. A specific refund schedule will be included in a future Wednesday Packet. Trip insurance is available on an individual basis at a set cost in addition to your payment (this cost varies depending on the number of people who are interested and ranges from $50-$75.
