As the weeks tick down to the last day of school, I am always struck by the increased energy that fills our campus. You would think our community would be tired and ready for a break. Perhaps we are, but the momentum of the moment propels us into events, competitions, banquets and more. Our teaching staff is juggling their daily academic responsibilities and the extra-curricular tasks as well. Our parents are making lists of their lists so they can be prepared for all that their many obligations require. Our calendar now has duplicate events crowding the days and evenings. All of which are important. The weather is fabulous and the enthusiasm is high! As our seniors prepare for their celebratory cruise and our middle school 8th grade students plan for their overnight lock-in, I am impressed at the independence and responsibility I see around me. There are interactions among friends, respectful partnering with teachers, plans for next year’s clubs and payoffs, and community service events that were not visible seven months ago! For some students, their physical appearance has matured and their demeanor has softened with confidence that can only come from being proud of themselves and their abilities. As you begin to plan for summer activities, I encourage you not to give in to the “I have been in school all year, I just want to rest all summer” mantra. Nothing good comes from extended nothingness. Help your teen find a camp, a class, a job or a hobby that fills their time with accomplishment and joy…even a few challenges. Last week’s WP had an amazing list of options and our campus offers some specific opportunities, as well. Let’s not put this growth on hold for a few months. Our kids are difficult to jump start in the fall and the time lost diminishes the overall gains. We have enjoyed this year’s Parent Socials and plan to continue them next year. Your PAC leadership will send notification of opportunities to sign up to plan for next year. We like to use the Spring to set the goals and the summer to fill in the blanks. When fall arrives, we have committees who know what the plans are and when their support is needed. Being a part of the TCS PAC team is a terrific way to make new friends and stay connected with the day to day school environment. If you do not have a lot of time to spend on campus (and most of you don’t) there are lots of ways you can help at other times! Watch for the details on how to join the team! Kudos to tennis standout Chandler Williams on heading to The Final Four in the State GISA Tennis Tournament. The outstanding performance of Chandler and Stewart Bowman in tennis doubles is very exciting! This is another history maker for TCS!! Although our Tennis and Golf teams are not as large as baseball and soccer, the talent is still evident and the reputation of our teams is fearsome! Imagine how both participation and performance will increase when we finally have our own courts and fields on campus. I doubt we will ever have a golf course within walking distance, but continuing to improve our athletic facilities is a major goal for the future. We are thrilled to have a new addition to our Executive Team!! Please welcome Rosetta Gooden as our new Admissions Director. We have been without this position for a few years and Rosetta brings

excellent experience and energy to our team. Her bio will be in next week’s WP.

TCS GIFT POLICY

It is that time of year when parents begin looking for end of the year

gifts for their child’s favorite teacher. We know the drill and we are not

a fan! The desire to show appreciation during the holiday season, for a

special occasion or at the end of the school year is undeniable.

However, there is a built in morale buster hidden in those packages.

When it is a team who has delivered the services, many team members

are left out (the Art teacher fills her car and the math teacher and

receptionist go home empty handed). We realize the joy in our jobs is

not about what we get from others, but the physical exchange of a

plethora of gifts distributed in a somewhat random fashion does not

build team morale, or even adequately reflect the true nature of the

impact of every individual in a school community. In addition, there are

many families who feel obligated to join in the giving spree even

though the time and economic impact is burdensome.

At TCS we prefer to approach appreciation from a very different angle.

We feel the gratitude and support all year long. Our parents are very

good about that. When special times arise, instead of encouraging

individual gifts, we prefer our parents send notes (or notes from the

student) that can be kept as reminders. If families wish to do more, our

PAC has a fund that is specifically designed to provide school wide

recognition in the form of gift cards and year end cash gifts. Your PAC

leadership will post instructions for year-end staff gifts very soon.

Please feel free to talk with me about suggestions or concerns related

to this school wide policy. Thank you for respecting our culture and

helping us honor all of our staff, as we honor all of our students!

Page 6: Wednesday Packet April 30, 2014

Dear TCS Parents,

Can you believe this school year 2013 – 2014 is almost over!?! I hope it has been a successful year for you and your student(s).

TCS PAC – Parent Association would like to invite you to join us in planning next year’s goals and activities.

Wednesday, May 7, 8:00am. Conference Room in Laura Finnell’s Building at High School

We will be discussing PAC’s plans for the year and will be looking for volunteers to: - Participate in the TCS PAC as a board member (Chair and co-chair, secretary,

treasurer, volunteer coordinator or event organizer). - Be a leader / co-chair for any of the proposed PAC activities (campus appreciation,

community service, community spirit, box-tops fundraising, movie night, new parent meeting, parent breakfasts, or staff appreciation)

- Participate in the activities for the remainder of the year (Staff appreciation, staff luncheon)

- Bring new ideas and suggestions to the PAC

We look forward to seeing you there, and we appreciate your participation. Please RSVP to [email protected].

Sincerely, TCS PAC Chair Kim M. Kitzler

Page 7: Wednesday Packet April 30, 2014

With the end of the school year quickly approaching, we know many

parents want to provide a special gift of appreciation to our Cottage

School teachers and staff. At TCS, individual gifts are discouraged, so the

Parents Association (PAC) offers an opportunity – for those wishing to

participate – to give a gift of cash. The PAC will collect contributions

from parents and will divide the total amount equally among all teachers

and staff. The gift will be given to the staff with a note of thanks at the

Year End Luncheon, Thursday, May 29th.

If you would like to participate, please send cash or checks in an envelope

to the school office marked “PAC Year-End Gift” by Wednesday,

May 21st. Checks should be made payable to TCS PAC. If you have any

questions, please contact Kim Kitzler at [email protected].

HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU GIVE?

Any amount you’d like to give is appreciated. Contributions range

from $10 to $500, with the average being $100.

Please respect TCS’s long standing tradition

and refrain from giving individual gifts.

Thank you!
