Understanding Job Postings

Most Job Posting contain three sections

Company Information:

Overview of the company mission and basic information pertaining to

the company goal in hiring a qualified applicant

Job Description:

Overview of the position and some of the day to day job duties for the

position the company is trying to fill

Position Requirements: Qualifications an individual must possess prior to applying for this

position

Page 21: Webster June 2012 event

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 21 Workforce Development Professionals Improving Lives

What is the 1st item on a Job Posting that

most individuals look at?

Correct “Pay”

Note: This can become an

unperceived barrier

Page 22: Webster June 2012 event

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 22 Workforce Development Professionals Improving Lives

Read the Job Posting from beginning to end

Select and highlight the top ten (10) items from the

entire posting that you feel the employer is looking for in

a qualified candidate.

These selections from you are subjective and may

not reflect 100% of what the employer is actually

looking for.

Then look at your resume…how many of the top ten

items that you selected for this position are reflected in

your resume and cover letter?

Job Search Strategy using Facebook

1. Networking – With the stats fresh in mind, we can assume that

most of your colleagues and business partners will

be on Facebook. Furthermore, we can assume that

recruiters and prospective new employers (hiring

mangers, HR people) will be on Facebook. This

gives you a unique opportunity to network yourself to

whoever is hiring at the moment.

Page 33: Webster June 2012 event

Job Search Strategy using Facebook

2. Status Updates – The most obvious way to use Facebook for a job hunt

is to update your status with your current situation

and what you are looking for. Friends, family, old

colleagues, long-time-no-speak acquaintances are all

there to help you.

Page 34: Webster June 2012 event

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 34 Workforce Development Professionals Improving Lives

Job Search Strategy using Facebook

3. Facebook Marketplace – Have a look through your local

marketplace for job listings, you will

be able to see a description and also

who posted the job. You can now

either apply or contact the person

behind the position for more

information.

Page 35: Webster June 2012 event

4. Join and get active in groups – The groups on Facebook are just like LinkedIn

Groups, a place to discuss and post news about a

particular topic, industry or interest. You can add

value to the group by joining in or starting

discussions, posting links and other resources to the

wall, moderating or managing sections of the group

and so on.

Page 36: Webster June 2012 event

5. Posting ads – It’s really simple to set up an ad campaign on

Facebook. You can put a short ad together and link it

to your bio. The more specific you can make it the

better, you only want the right people clicking through

as you pay per click.

Job Search Strategy using Facebook

• Conclusion

Can Facebook really help you get a job?

If you spend most of your time on Facebook anyway

why not make it productive

Add it to your social media job searching strategy along

with LinkedIn, Twitter and any other platform you use.

Another weapon in your job hunting arsenal is not going

to hurt.

Blog.jobfully.com

Page 41: Webster June 2012 event

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 41 Workforce Development Professionals Improving Lives

How many of you have a current

LinkedIn Profile?

• Looking for a job? Many companies are

ONLY using LinkedIn to post employment

opportunities

• Not looking for a job? Many recruiters are

prowling LinkedIn looking for industry

talent. Don’t you want to have your door

open to these offers?

1st ~ Who’s Reading It

• Resume

– Recruiters, Hiring Managers, contacts that

connect you with a job lead, ATS

• LinkedIn Profile

– People who have heard about you, people

who want to connect with you, recruiters

searching for potential candidates

Page 46: Webster June 2012 event

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 46 Workforce Development Professionals Improving Lives

#2 ~ Why are they Reading it

• Resume

– To assess your qualifications for a specific job

• LinkedIn Profile

– To learn about you, including where you’ve

worked, who you know, skills, education, talks

you gave, etc.

Page 47: Webster June 2012 event

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 47 Workforce Development Professionals Improving Lives

#3 ~ What do you want the

Readers to get out of it?

• Resume

– To see clearly how you match the job

requirements and find something unique

about your qualifications that set you apart

from all other candidates

• LinkedIn Profile

– To establish reasons for them to connect with

you, contact you, determine next steps

Page 48: Webster June 2012 event

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 48 Workforce Development Professionals Improving Lives

Now you understand that ~

• Your resumes are for a very targeted

and controlled audience;

• While you don’t necessarily know and

can’t control who looks at your

LinkedIn profile

Page 49: Webster June 2012 event

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 49 Workforce Development Professionals Improving Lives

• Both should move the readers to

take action to reach out

Resume – Only accomplishments,

experience, skills that are relevant to that

specific job

you want to be known for, then edit your profile.

Page 51: Webster June 2012 event

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 51 Workforce Development Professionals Improving Lives

LinkedIn Tips

accomplishments in as few words as possible, using

numbers and statistics to support the truth. An

example might be

• Key Words – Employers and recruiters are masters of

for.
