What is respite?

Respite means having

a rest

or

a break.

Carers sometimes need a rest. Your carer is the

person who helps you with your daily life.

You can choose what you want to do while your

carer has a rest. For example

someone can come to your house

you can stay at a Yooralla house

or

you can do an activity.

These are called respite services.

Respite at your house

Someone can come to your house while your

carer has a rest. That person can help you with

your daily needs.

Our houses

are accessible

and

have the things you will need to stay. For

example

o equipment

o assistive technologies.

Equipment means things like

hoists

and

ramps.

Assistive technologies are tools

to help with daily life.

For example

tools to help you eat.

Our houses also have staff to help with your

daily needs. Staff are people who work at the

house.

There will also be other people with disability at

the house. You can make new friends.

You can stay at a Yooralla house

for one night

Family based respite is when a child stays with

another person while their carer has a rest. They

only stay for a short time.

Family based respite is for children who are

6 years old

12 years old.

What is breakaway funding?

Carers can get money to help pay for respite.

This is called breakaway funding.

Your carer can use the money to help pay for

someone to come to your house

or

for you to do an activity.

Meanings of words

Accessible Accessible means a place that people who use a

wheelchair or scooter can use. For example

a toilet

or

building.

Emergency When something happens that you didn’t expect.

Something that happens suddenly. For example

your carer gets sick

or

your carer can’t look after you.

Case Manager A case manager helps people with disability by

giving information about services

helping them to plan for the future

and

helping them achieve their goals.
