This week we’re going to have a go at ratio. We’ve chatted about it before. Ratio is a way of showing the comparison between quantities of something.For example, in our class we have 5 boys and 25 girls. To show this as a ratio of boys to girls, it would be 5 : 25 (boys : girls)This can be simplified only if you can divide both sides by the same number. For our class we can divide by 51 : 5 this means that for every 1 boy there are 5 girlsWrite these ratios in their lowest terms

1. a) 6:8 b) 9:3 c) 20:10 d) 21:7 e) 2:82. a) 8:2 b) 5:20 c) 18:12 d) 4:4 e) 25:5

Solve these word problems1. 10 girls and 20 boys are gong to the art gallery

a) What fraction of pupils are girls? (the fraction is the number of girls over the total number of pupils)

b) What is the ratio of girls to boys?c) What is the ratio of boys to girls?

2. John got 8 marks in his test, Jane got 6 and Mark got 4a) Write the results in the ratio John:Mark:Janeb) Write the ratio in its lowest formc) What fraction of John’s score did Jane get?

Ratio, Sharing Unequally!We can divide out using ratio. If I have €20 and I want to share it in the ratio 2:3.

1. What this means is that I have 5 parts altogether (2 + 3 = 5)2. Divide €20 into 5 parts – divide by 5, 20 ÷ 5 = 43. Each part = 44. Two parts, 2 x 4 = 85. Three parts 3 x 4 = 126. The €20 would be divided €8 : €12

I hope this makes sense. The most important thing is adding the total number of parts together, divide to find one part and then multiply.Have a go;
