What is the process for voting and also passing laws in the australian democratic system? As students are reading through the texts they can take notes demonstrating they understand the three levels of Government (Federal/State/Local) and their responsibilities. After they have completed taking notes they can place their understanding into a 3 way venn diagram to compare the similarities and differences between the three. When engaging with the readings about voting and making laws, students can begin by accessing their prior-knowledge to write down what they already know. This can be recorded in a two column chart under the heading - What I Know. Once they have read the text, students can add to the second column, under the heading - What I Now Know, the new information they have learnt. Students can also continue to read at home for 15minutes a day. They can work on their individual goals (as found on compass). You can also support the comprehension of their text by asking them about: Predicting - What do you think will happen in the story? What will happen next? Why do you think that? What are the clues you are using to help you? Connections - Does this story remind you of anything? Does it remind you of a book you have already read? Inferring - How does the character feel? Using the writing process, students need to plan, draft, revise and edit a text they create arguing either for or against a particular topic. Students are able to choose a topic of their choice. Reading:Within reading students are searching for and using information to answer the following key questions of our integrated topic on democracy:

● What are the responsibilities of the three levels of government?

● What is the process for voting and also passing laws in the australian democratic system?

You can also support the comprehension of their text by asking them about:

Predicting - What do you think will happen in the story? What will happen next? Why do you think that? What are the clues you are using to help you?Connections - Does this story remind you of anything? Does it remind you of a book you have already read?Inferring - How does the character feel? What clues tell you that? Why do you think the character did that? Summarising - What happened in the story? Can you tell me the story in sequence? What are the most important parts?Critiquing - Did you like the story? What parts did you like the most?
