A note from Sue... In the midst of the October holidays already? Where does the school year go? I suppose it won’t be long till Christmas after Halloween, Bonfire Night, Thanksgiving to name a few festivals leading up to the big end of year celebration.

So who is going to make more effort to support our local shops this Christmas? We are very lucky to have such individual stores to pick up some genuine and unique gifts. Just because they are independent does not make them all more expensive. You will find something for every budget. Why not pop along and see for yourselves. Next issue we hope to bring some of the products into your home to tempt you even more.

The start of the Christmas Craft Fairs will also be upon us. There is one at Harlaw Academy and the Craft Bazaar returns to Airyhall Community Centre. There will also be some wonderful Christmas concerts on the go – Aberdeen Orpheus Choir will be performing at Craigiebuckler Church on 12 December so mark that one on your calendar.

My diet is almost at an end and I hope to bring you another article about Alizonne with some pictures to inspire and encourage you in 2015. The blog on the website is almost up-to-date so you can follow my progress.

In the meantime, why not re-fill your cuppa and enjoy the rest of the magazine.

Until the next issue,

Sue

Our next deadlines are20 October for our NEW Ellon Quarterly Magazine30 October for Area 1 and the Deeside magazines20 November for Area 2 and Kingswells magazines

An Exercise class has

more than a physical benefit, it's

has a social benefit too. The enthusiastic group of ladies and gentlemen

who come along to my seated exercise classes do so by brining their own humour as well as a physical limitation with them. Their physical limitation may be a health condition, an injury or some 'wear and tear' (that's a technical term) to some joints; but all have one thing in common, to do what they can to keep moving and stay as strong and mobile for the best quality of life.

The circulation booster at the start of class aims to warm the body, whilst still seated; but it also increase the blood flow the the brain as well as the rest of the body. However this causes much humour to take place amongst the participants, which is usually directed towards me, most of the time. But it soon becomes clear that the comedy is

more about friendship and enjoying the company than anything else.

Do you remember when getting in and out of a car was easy, or when you didn't make a noise when getting out of a seat? So do we and we're working on returning to that time, in class.

To do this, we use ankle weights to add strength into the legs. This gives strength for daily activity or functional movements such as sitting down, standing up, climb the stairs, getting on and off a bus etc. I find the ability to count the number of repetitions more challenging than the ankle weights. Unfortunately maths was never my strong point so I leave the counting to some else. Even with the increase blood flow to my brain, after the warm up, I'm still not able to use it to my advantage and count!

Upper body strength and posture is just as important as leg strength, so we use resistance bands, such as those used in a physiotherapy session to improve strength in the arms And shoulders to help you carry shopping bags, a full

kettle or maybe a grandchild! This section also has a second health advantage as it increases bone density, in particular it can halt the progress of osteoporosis. The band is used with exercises to strengthen the upper body, the bone density benefits come into the arms, shoulders and spinel bones too.

The final part of the class is about standing balance exercises. Here people are at their most challenged due to the static balance - such as standing on one leg; and the dynamic balance- such as walking along heel to toe. There is a great verity of challenging excises here and most people are relived to sit down at the end of this section. This is when we creat those ' party pieces' so when you attend your next social event you can say ' Hey, look what I can do!'

The seated exercise class is all about your ability and how you can improve it. The class is taken at a pace which the participants find comfortable. Those who attend all enjoy the classes, the exercises and the health benefits of the exercises.

However, all that, is now secondary to why people attend classes. They have all found new friends, socialise with them, go to lunch after class together but most of all we all enjoy each others company. Nobody is forced to do an exercise and each person is given exercise appropriate for their ability.

If there is one thing I would ask you to bring, is a sense of humour. So if you have a joke to tell, of if you can count past four, you would bring much to the class, oh, and by the way, we exercise too.

P is for PortugalPortugal is probably best know for the sweet fortified Port wines of the Douro Valley but as a wine producing country it’s well worth exploring the length and breadth for a range of styles and many indigenous grapes.

The same grapes which are used to make Port are also used in the production of the light wines too. Touriga Nacional has dark fruit, structure and colour, perhaps one to try if you are a Cabernet fan.

Tinta Roriz is the Tempranillo of Spain so one for Rioja fans, it changes its name to Aragonez further south in the Alentejo region where you will might find it blended with Shiraz or Merlot.

The Dao region shares similar grapes to the Douro. Producers to look out for include Quinta das Maias

and Quinta Dos Roques. The white Encruzado grape is mainly found in the Dao, like Chardonnay it works well in arrange of styles both oaked and un-oaked.

To the west of Dao and closer to the Atlantic is Bairrada. Baga is the main red grape of the region. It has structured tannins and acidity. Luis Pato makes some great examples and his daughter Filipa is following suit. The white Bical grape has a savoury edge and Maria Gomes (Fernao Pires) is the grape behind some traditional method sparkling wines as well as still wine.

The northern region of Vinho Verde is home to crisp dry whites made from Loureiro and this region is also home to some really good Alvarinho (the Albarino of Spain).

comedy actress herself. As one half of the nation’s best-loved female comedy duo, French and Saun-ders, she and her partner in crime redefined the roles of women in entertainment. With their side-ways look at life that started with performances in Comic Strip they’ve sent up pretty much everyone in their hugely successful TV series. French tackles everything, from her career to her father’s death, and not forgetting a nation’s obsession with her size. A brilliant read.

Bonkers: My Life in LaughsJennifer Saunders

We couldn’t talk about Dawn French and then not include Jennifer Saun-ders’ memoir, Bonkers. A self-confessed procras-tinator, Saunders seems to be under the impres-sion it’s a bit of a miracle she’s achieved anything. There’s never been a life plan she says, more a sort

of stumbling from one thing to the next, but it

seems to be working for her. The book follows her haphazard working life alongside fellow ‘bluffer’ French and is full of their adventures together as well as those had whilst working on her own series such as Absolutely Fabulous. Then of course, there is her battle with cancer; again, not something she had planned for. She doesn’t shy away from talking about the tough times and it seems that laughter really could be the best medicine.

That’s Another Story: The AutobiographyJulie WaltersBeloved British star of both stage and screen, Julie Walters is as well remembered for belting out Abba’s classics as she is for her turn as Mrs Overall in Acorn Antiques. In her autobiography she chronicles her Irish Catholic upbringing in 1950s Birmingham, to her convent school, and her short-lived career as a nurse, before she turned to acting. West End performances, Oscar nomina-tions and those Harry Potter films then followed over the next few decades. The book reads just as you would expect it be like to have a chat and a cuppa with Walters: open, friendly, entertaining and moving.

Boost Your Income: How to Make Money from Crafting By Ann Haldon

The growth in popularity of knitting, sewing and jewellery-making has provided skilled crafters with a golden opportunity to supplement their in-come. Not only is it possible to make good money from a creative hobby such as this, people young and old are starting successful businesses doing what they love.

Many people make gifts for family and friends, but don’t always realise the potential to earn money from their hobby. Diverse influences including media interest, the economic collapse, and TV programmes such as The Great British Sewing Bee have all been instrumental in bringing about the revival of crafts once regarded as old-fashioned.

So if you want to use your creativity to make some money, what are the best ways to sell, and how easy is it to get started?

Selling at craft fairs Craft fairs are considered the ‘traditional’ route to selling handcrafted items. They remain a good option if you can spare several days a month to focus on selling, in addition to the time needed to produce your items. Craft fairs and vintage markets are held regularly throughout the year, but because they are so popular, it is advis-able to book well in advance.

Some venues provide tables, equipment and electrical sockets, but in most cases you’ll have to provide your own table and lighting. High quality spotlighting is a good investment for sellers with a long-term plan, and can encourage sales if the venue is dimly lit.

Selling onlineSelling online involves a little more planning and considerably more effort to be successful. In its favour it has the advantage of being flexible, and may fit more easily into your life.

Not only will you need to pro-duce items to sell, you’ll also need to develop your ‘shop,’ take and upload photos of each item, describe them well, estimate postage and pack-ing charges, and continually market the business.

If this is what you envisioned, there’s probably no better way to make money from crafting. Two web-sites set up to help you succeed in this respect are Folksy and Etsy, both being designed specifically for independent craftspeople and artisans.

FolksyWith more than 15,000 sellers on Folksy, this has become a strong community for crafters and buyers alike. A UK-based site that has been around since 2007, Folksy provides a great opportunity to create your own brand without it costing a fortune, get your creations in front of a global audience, and build a bona-fide craft business.

Lovingly handcrafted items of a high quality have more personality than mass-produced goods, and their unique nature makes them appealing to discerning buyers. Although not a get-rich-quick scheme, making items to sell has the potential to bring in some valuable extra income and provide much-needed job satisfaction.

1. Arbroath - In 1885, Arbroath beat Aberdeen Bon Accord 36-0 (an average of one goal every 2 minutes) in a first round Scottish Cup match. Thirteen of Arbroath’s goals were scored by one player, John ‘Jocky’ Petrie.

2. Dundee - In 1997, Aberdeen’s Dean Windass received three red cards in one game – originally sent off for a foul, he was given two further red cards for verbally abusing the referee and then throwing a corner flag into the crowd. Aberdeen went on to lose to Dundee 5-0, while Windass was given a six-match ban.

3. Inverness - In 1979, a second-round tie between Inverness Thistle FC and Falkirk was postponed a record twenty-nine times due to bad weather. Originally scheduled for January 9, the match finally took place forty-four days later on February 22.

4. Hull - When half an hour of extra time failed to resolve a match between Hull and Manchester United on August 5 1970, Britain’s first ever penalty shoot-out took place at Boothferry Park, Hull City’s former home ground. The first player to score in a penalty shoot-out was United’s George Best; the first to miss was Denis Law.

5. Loughborough - The 1899-1900 Football League Season saw Leicestershire’s Loughborough Town FC win just 8 points, conceding 100 goals (including 12 to Arsenal in a single match) and losing 27 of their 34 games (including all of their away games). Loughborough understandably failed to be re-elected to the League the following season and the side was disbanded in June 1900.

Mitsubishi PHEVIt’s not very often a car comes along with the promise of ‘changing the game’ – but that’s exactly what Mitsubishi believes its new plug-in hybrid Outlander will do. We took it for a spin on and off road to see if we can believe the hype.

What is it?

It’s an SUV with a seriously clever powertrain that combines a 2.0-litre petrol unit with battery technology. On pure electric the car can travel up to 32 miles, even at motorway speeds, and when the batteries are depleted an engine takes over to keep you motoring. All that clever technology has huge benefits too such as no road tax, Congestion Charge exemption, and just 5% BIK for company car drivers. But that’s not all – you get all this with NO price premium over the equivalent diesel model. That’s an industry first and to put it into perspective, Volvo’s plug-in hybrid V60 commands an £11,000 premium over the diesel.

What’s under the bonnet?

It’s not what’s under the bonnet that matters but what’s hidden in the floor; a wedge of batteries. As the plug-in name suggests you can top these up every night, for

around £1, from a normal three-pin plug. If you do no more than 30-odd miles a day, and top the car up every night, you’ll never use the fuel in the tank. On those occasions when a longer trip needs to be made, you can use the electric range and then rely on the petrol unit to power the wheels, which in itself will do 48mpg. The switch between the two units is seamless. Officially the combined economy is 148mpg, but this will vary depending on where you use it and how often you charge the batteries.

What’s the spec like?

The bottom of the range model gets 18-inch alloys, cruise control, air-con, leather steering wheel, reversing camera, Bluetooth and a lot more. On higher spec models there’s a mobile phone App (Apple and Windows) that lets you change the heating settings, view current range and even operate the headlights and horn remotely. Also, it’s worth remembering this is a proper off-roader with 190mm ground clearance, four-wheel drive and Mitsubishi’s renowned reliability.

Any rivals?

Not really. This is the first true plug-in hybrid SUV. The closest thing to a rival comes from Volvo, in the shape of its S60 plug-in hybrid – but remember that costs

nearly £50,000, and commands a £11,280 premium over the equivalent diesel. The Outlander PHEV starts at a ridiculous £28,249.

What’s it like to drive?

In EV mode it’s near silent and although the petrol unit is a little revvy when it kicks in, it’s not nasty. It’ll hit 60mph in 11 seconds, which is quicker than the diesel, and reaches a top speed of 106mph. It’s all very refined though and wind and road noise is kept to a minimum. There are lots of clever tricks up the PHEVF’s sleeve too – like the ability to hold a charge and use the petrol engine instead at the touch of a button, and the ability to recharge back to 80 per cent when left on tick over for just half an hour. Our only complaint would be a rather hard ride.

The AOL Cars Verdict

The biggest winners are company car drivers who effectively get a £10,000 pay rise a year if they’re higher rate tax payers, plus free fuel. Business owners are winners too as they can write down the full cost of the car in the first year. If you’re a normal car driver then the benefits of EV motoring, no road tax and Congestion Charge exemption will be equally attractive. And remember this is all wrapped up in a comfortable, high-

riding, go-anywhere off-roader. Our guess is Mitsubishi won’t be able to make them fast enough…

Pick a side: Apple or Android?Apple is due to launch the latest, greatest iPhone this September along with iOS 8, the latest version of its smartphone and tablet software. The phone will have a bigger screen and a better camera, but one thing won’t change: like all Apple gadgets, it won’t be cheap.

Apple isn’t the only game in town, though. Google’s Android system has been updated too, and Android phones and tablets from the likes of Samsung, HTC, LG and Sony are often just as pretty and just as powerful as anything Apple makes - and in many cases they’re a good bit cheaper too. Android isn’t quite as simple or as elegant as Apple’s iOS, but there’s not much in it - and where Apple only makes a handful of devices, with Android there are dozens of phones and tablets to choose from.Unless you’re a big Apple fan then, is Android the smarter choice? Unfortunately it’s a bit more complicated than that.Apple and Google don’t just want to be your friend when you buy a phone or a tablet. They want to be part of your entire life. They want to be the companies you from whom you buy your music, movies, TV programmes and books, the companies who provide your in-car entertainment and navigation systems, the companies who handle all your messages, voice and video calls, the companies who connect all of the appliances in your home and who track your health and fitness. By the end of this year both firms will have smart

watches or wristbands that monitor your vital signs, set-top boxes that stream music and video to your TV, software that connects to cars from the likes of Volvo, Nissan, Audi and Mercedes, music and movie streaming services and home automation systems - and that’s just the stuff we know about. This means you need to consider the bigger picture.

For example, if you fancy Apple’s clever Apple TV system, you won’t get the

best from it unless you also have an Apple phone or tablet; if you want to use an Android smart watch, it’ll work best with an Android phone; if you’re a fan of iTunes Match you can’t use it on Android, and so on. Consider what your friends, family and colleagues use. Apple’s iMessage offers free SMS and MMS messages (and soon, voice messages too), but only to other iMessage users - and iMessage isn’t available on Android. FaceTime offers free video calling, but it can’t call Android users (although Google’s alternative, Hangouts, does work on Apple devices. As a rule of thumb Google services work on Apple kit but not vice-versa. Increasingly, then, choosing a phone or tablet is more like picking a football team to support or voting for a political party: the available choices all do essentially the same thing, but they do it in very different ways - and your choice might colour your life for many years to come.

Pic 1 Apple family sharing only works on Apple devices.Pic 2 Both Apple (pictured) and Google have TV set-top boxesPic 3 Car firms are embracing smartphone tech: this is Apple CarPlay{Pic 4 Fancy a smart watch? Android ones work best with Android phones.

Royston Maldoom RetrospectiveThe Edinburgh Choreographic Project presents an evening of modern dance devised by internationally renowned choreographer Royston Maldoom OBE.

Royston has choreographed for many companies including Scottish Ballet and has been an important contributor to contemporary dance in Scotland.

The programme is inspired by the wonderful music of Gustav Mahler, Fazil Say, Graham Fitkin and James MacMillan CBE. 4 pieces will be performed including ‘Adagietto No.5’, Royston’s first attempt at choreography, which gained first prize at the 1975 Bagnolet International Choreographic Competition in Paris and has been performed by many companies worldwide.

The programme also features ‘The Confession of Isobel Gowdie’ which is dedicated to the memory of the last woman to stand trial for witchcraft in Scotland in 1662. Amy Longmuir who trained at Academy Street Dance Studio and Danscentre in Aberdeen will be playing Isobel when the show comes to Aberdeen Arts Centre on Saturday 15th November.

Tickets can be booked online at

www.act-aberdeen.org.uk or

on 01224 635208.

Edinburgh Choreographic Project are offering free workshops to local groups/ schools in return for block bookings of tickets. For more information call 07504039514.

An Idiot’s Guide to Fireworks

Fireworks have come a long way since the ancient Chinese used red firecrackers to ward off evil spirits. Here’s a summary of the various types available.

Sky Rocket – Launched into the air it can climb up to 200 feet before exploding with a loud bang in a variety of colours and effects. A variation is the Colossus which whistles as it ascends before exploding.

Experienced Community Carers, are urgently required for Home Care in Kingswells, Bucksburn and Peterculter. We have both Full and Part Time opportunities available and excellent rates of pay are on offer. It will be necessary for the successful applicants to be available every second weekend.

Please call Doreen Hillis on 01224-628700 or email: [email protected]

All applicants are subject to a P.V.G. disclosure.

Roman Candle – Enclosed in a cardboard casing, individual balls shoot out stars periodically after ignition. Noise effects include hums and crackles.

Fountain – Enjoy the beauty but not the noise of a firework as a shower of sparks is quietly released in either a single or variety of colours.

Catherine Wheel – A tube filled with gunpowder is coiled to produce a wheel effect. When the fuse is lit, the wheel rotates at speed, producing a spiral effect of coloured flame and sparks. Noise effects include crackles and whistles.

Mine – The loudest firework, its effect is dramatic and spectacular but short-lived. The mine is shot from a mortar shell on ground level and shoots coloured stars

into the sky with flashes and bangs.

Sparkler – Held by hand on a metal stick, a constant stream of white or coloured sparks can create dazzling shapes and patterns if waved around.

In today’s modern world, there really is a firework for everyone!

Teen View - UniversityApplying to University

Recently I went to a Higher Education Convention which was held in Elphinstone Hall, University of Aberdeen. I decided to go so that I could find out more information about various Universities and the courses on offer.

Upon arrival we were invited into the main hall to meander through the various stalls. There was a representative from each University and College there who were happy to

assist with any questions you had regarding the university and entry requirements. There was a large variety of prospectuses laid out, from Scottish and English Universities. I have to say I picked up around twelve, which was slightly problematic on the bus journey home.

The information from each University was slightly limited and I found the majority of representatives were just reading the prospectus out to you. However to gain a greater grasp of the course and university you are hoping to apply for, open days are the best option. Open days give you the opportunity to have a tour round the University and also to meet specific people related to the courses on offer. They can assist to a greater extent as they specialise in that particular field and you are guaranteed to receive the most up to date

information regarding the course and student life. Open days occur at around this time of the year but make sure you book a place beforehand!

After collating the necessary information, the next objective is to decide on the Universities you would like to apply to and which courses. All applications are processed online through the charity ‘UCAS’. UCAS allow you to apply to five different courses at the cost of £23. To be accepted into the course you need to ensure that you meet the entry requirements. Then you select your courses online and fill in the application form, which must include a personal statement and a reference. All the various sections of the form are explained in greater detail by video guides on the website, worksheets and the people working at UCAS. After the application process is completed it is just a matter of waiting.

The format of UCAS helps to ensure a stress free, straight forward application to your chosen University, however a significant amount of thought is needed create a punchy personal statement.

Good Luck! Tara
