Established in 2005, Parkhill Property Leasing has grown from a single property landlord to a

highly successful property leasing & management company. Ten years on and celebrating a successful year in the new office, the Parkhill Team guarantee the personal and reliable service that their clients deserve!

As property owners themselves they became frustrated by the lack of personal service provided by some leasing agents. Parkhill Property Leasing decided that the key to success was to provide every landlord with a personal and professional service. Their company ethos is to treat every property as if it was their own. It is this ethos that the Parkhill Property Leasing success to date has been founded on and what will continue to drive their business forward.

As Landlords, the Parkhill Team know how important your property is, and they keep you updated every step of the way, by tailoring their services to meet each individual landlord’s needs. Whether you have 1 property or 50 properties you will receive the personal and reliable service you deserve…Guaranteed!

The Parkhill Property Leasing Manager, Chloe Baxter, oversees the team of leasing agents and ensures that each landlord has a direct contact within the Parkhill Team. This ensures the personal relationship between the landlord and Parkhill Property Leasing is maintained throughout the property leasing process.

‘2015 has been our best year yet! We have had an influx of new clients joining Parkhill Property Leasing on recommendations from existing clients. We are delighted that our 1st class service has resulted in the continued growth of our business. Both our existing, and new clients have given some great feedback helping us build a strong working relationship. The Parkhill Team are looking forward to a busy and exciting future.’ (Chloe Baxter)

Happy 10 Years of Publishing

I’m quite amazed at how quickly those ten years have flown in. The granite city gazette as it was first called started with just 2000 homes in Mannofield and Ashley. I have a strong memory of pushing that first magazine through the door. So a HUGE thank you to all you readers and the many many advertisers for keeping me afloat through some tough times. But boy there has been some great times too. A huge thank you to my delivery teams as they are troopers, to the many friends who helped out in the early days too (and still do!)

Collectively known as gazette magazines now I’m very proud to say I have FIVE publications and still pretty much work on my own, well the hat stand is always

close by for flicking caps! I truly enjoy my job and I hope that shows in the magazines - ok sometimes they go slightly array but I’m only human!

There is no big celebration, no cake and fizz, no fancy competitions, no bells and whistles. I’m a small local independent publisher who just wants to say THANKS. But I will give the first/only person who takes a photo of themselves with the FIRST ISSUE - £50! You have a 1/2000 chance (family members - forget it!)

As always, I’d love to hear from you and any news that I can help publish.

Grab that cuppa and enjoy the start of our tenth year together, it’s going to be a fab year. Until next time,

Sue

Super Mario Kart - For RealIain Betson now knows where they took the inspiration for the video game.

Apologies if you’re an Italian reading this; I have no wish to confirm cultural stereotypes. You know the type: Americans are loud, Germans disciplined, we Brits are stuffy. But, sorry Italy, when it comes to you and motorised road transport, the two of you should never have met. I love your food, your weather, your style, but boy am I scared of your driving! This year, our family holiday was spent on the Amalfi coast. The temperature never dipped below 34°C, the lemon trees groaned under the weight of their fruit and the Limoncello tasted divine. But whenever I ventured out of the hotel, I felt I was taking my life in my hands. Our original plan was to hire a car in Naples, but a quick search strongly advised to the contrary. Confirmation that this was the right decision came within three minutes of being picked up at the airport. Scooters and cars observed no lane discipline, horns were used incessantly and the breaking of speed limits by large margins was commonplace. Every car boasted dents, scuffs and/or missing wing mirrors, I saw a Chevrolet Spark being driven around town even though it had been involved in a major front-end smash, and the buses appeared to have emerged from a war-torn country. Italy: home to Ferrari with its prancing horse, Lamborghini’s bull and Maserati’s Neptune’s trident badge - perhaps these logos are subtle nods that Italy should stick to four-legged road transport or put its faith in the Gods when it comes to moving around safely.

Ciao for now!

Adelphi Kitchen, Aberdeen’s only dirty cooking style restaurant, which was established in 2013, is

the most recent addition to the Beetroot Restaurants group and already boats a one AA rosette due to the excellent quality of service and food and drink offering it provides customers. Chris Tonner, managing director of Beetroot Restaurants, said: “I am delighted that we have won this award at the Northern Star. The team has worked extremely hard over the past few years to ensure we deliver the best customer service possible to our clients, be that in the restaurant or when we are catering for large weddings or events. It is humbling to know that all of our hard work has been recognised by the business community, and we are looking forward in continuing to develop the business in new and exciting ways. Food and drink is a huge part of our city’s offerings so it is fantastic to be commended for this.”

Snickerdoodles

These classic American cookies are crisp at the edges, chewy in the middle and have a delicious cinnamon sugar coating. Try them warm from the oven with a milkshake or hot chocolate – and if you need an excuse, America is celebrating Thanksgiving this month!

Ingredients:

• 115g unsalted butter, softened

• 100g dark muscovado sugar

• 2 tbsp maple syrup

• 175g self-raising flour

• 1 tbsp granulated sugar

• 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Makes 16

Ready in 35 minutes, plus cooling

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F / Gas Mark 4. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper.

2. Place the butter and muscovado sugar in a large bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until creamed. Beat in the maple syrup. Sift over the flour and beat in with the wooden spoon to form a rough dough.

3. Mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon on a flat plate. Divide and shape the dough into about16 walnut-sized balls (keep them roughly shaped – not smooth) and roll each ball in the cinnamon sugar. Place, well spaced, on the prepared baking sheets. Flatten each ball of mixture slightly with your fingertips.

4. Bake in the preheated oven for 13-14 minutes, or until deep golden brown. Remove the baking sheets from the oven and sprinkle any remaining cinnamon sugar over the cookies. Leave on the baking sheets for 10 minutes then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool.

TIP Add some chopped pecans or toasted chopped

hazelnuts to the cookie dough for a crunchy texture, or top with white or dark chocolate chips just before baking.

Local Support for “Stoptober” Campaign

Sam Luxford has now retrained as a Solution Focused Clinical Hypnotherapist and pyschotherapist. Sam started her career as a RGN and RMN and worked within the NHS in Mental Health and Addictions for over 20 years. Sam is currently studying for a Masters Degree in Clinical Hypnotherapy - Evidence based practice at RGU.

Many people use hypnotherapy to provide extra help when giving up smoking. The Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) is the UK regulator for complementary therapists that was set up with government funding and support.

Hypnotherapy is often used to help clients achieve the behavioural change needed to stop smoking but it’s so important the public use someone who knows what they are doing.

Using neuroscience and independent science research and evidence, Sam has helped many people understand how and why the brain encourages

such a dangerous habit as smoking and how they can take back intellectual control (get into the part of the brain that doesnt smoke) and achieve success becoming smoke free. The session has been formally researched over a 2 year period at the Clifton Practice, Bristol and over 90% of people taking part in the study stopped and stayed after a single session.

One happy Customer wrote: Who would of thought it. After 1 session with you on the 16th April 2014. I am now 1 year cigarette free, after 27 years of nicotine addiction...I cannot begin to describe the change it has made to me and my lifestyle...I have joined a local triathlon club and will compete in my first triathlon at Bryne, Rogaland, Norway on the 6th of June 2015...

Using modern Neuroscience research and evidence, I will explain why your brain is encouraging you to experience the upsetting symptoms and what can be done using Solution Focused Hypnotherapy to help you turn this around and take back control.

Tresses that Impressby Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

BeautyWhether long, short or in-between, afro, curly, wavy or straight, our hair is one of the first things people notice about us. The right style can detract from imperfections, and tells the world a little something about our personality. It can make us more self-assured; more confident in the workplace and social situations. And, of course, it’s not just about the cut; having the right tools in your arsenal at home can make all the difference.

I have a confession – until recently I didn’t own a hairbrush. I just used my daughter’s, which is shaped like Hello Kitty, but does the job. Thankfully, now I am the proud owner of a Wet Brush, the US’s bestselling hairbrush, which detangles wet or dry hair like a dream. My daughter is also a fan, as it doesn’t pull as much, which is making mornings rather more pleasant. The Wet Brush costs £11.99 from www.cultbeauty.co.uk.

If you only make one change to your haircare regime, swap to a gentler, more natural shampoo. Most high street shampoos contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which can strip your hair of essential oils, leaving it limp and lifeless.

A gentler alternative is Green People Quinoa & Artichoke Shampoo and Conditioner (£9.95 each), which are designed to nourish and protect damaged hair. The quinoa and artichoke leaf work together to condition, minimise frizz, strengthen and protect from UV radiation.

Curly and coily haired women have cause to celebrate, with the release of Aveda Be Curly Co-Wash, £17.50, which cleanses hair, while preserving moisture and minimising frizz. The key ingredients are organic babassu

oil and baobab oil. Subrina Kidd, Aveda UK’s Textured Hair Specialist, explains,

“Regular cleansing shampoos can often leave hair looking and feeling dry and brittle – this low-lather, sulfate-free formula will refresh and revive the hair texture or curl pattern without removing necessary moisture. To avoid tangling, sub-divide the hair into four sections, massage the Co-Wash into each section, comb through and then rinse thoroughly.”

Looking for a salon-style deep conditioning treatment? Try Philip Kingsley Geranium & Neroli Elasticizer, £31.50, a pre-shampoo conditioning treatment that contains neroli, geranium, lavender, rose and orange oils. The Elasticizer has been around for a few years now, and has won numerous awards and accolades. This new version looks set to be just as successful, as it leaves hair soft, bouncy and easier to style. While you can just apply it a few minutes before showering, for best results lather it on before bed. It may seem pricey, but a little goes a long way, so you’ll get a fair few weekly treatments from each jar.

Intensive conditioning treatments tend to work best if you cover up with a shower cap. Of course, you could just pick up a simple see-through one for a couple of pounds, but how much more fun is this one from The Vintage Cosmetic Company?

Lot of brands have limited edition products out for breast cancer

awareness at the moment. One of our favourites is

Origins Pink Ribbon Make A Difference Rejuvenating Hand Treatment, £19.50. It’s really rich, with extracts of Rose of Jericho and meadowfoam seed oil, so ideal for dry, dehydrated hands. What’s more, £5 from

each sale will be donated to The Breast Cancer

Research Foundation.

You know, I've been working within the fitness industry for nearly 20 years now. Some would say for that length of time I could be classed as an expert. But I think the longer you stay with something the more you realise how little you know. But the one thing that does confuse me is why the fitness industry has aligned itself with weight loss instead of health. So much so that recently, when I was introduced to someone and I was asked 'what do you do, do you work?' I said yes I'm a fitness instructor, to which the reply was 'Oh, I need to lose some weight, have you got any ideas how to shift this belly?' As the person sucks in the tummy to make it look smaller! At this point I thought about what I said, I'm sure I said I was a fitness instructor not a nutritionist!

I have a BIG bee in my bonnet about exercise classes meaning we are all watching our weight. Exercise classes should be all about our health. Although body weight and total amount of body fat is part of our health just because a person may be 'fat' does not necessarily mean we are unhealthy and similarly just because someone is 'thin' they are healthy. Being active is about keeping the health of the body, and slowing down the biological ageing process as the chronological ageing process continues. Getting out of breath as you walk keeps your heart strong. Exercising with weight keeps the muscle strength and the bone density. As we age so hormone depletion affect muscle ability to stay working efficiently and depletes the strength of the bone. As we age so health conditions affect our ability to exercise. But it means we have to exercise differently not give it up completely.

Fitness for weight loss or strength?

Page 17: Web issue 98 wa2

Please do mention the gazette when responding to advertisers - thank you 17

Being overweight is ultimately down to over eating. I am testament to that. For my first 10 years in the industry I taught 20 exercise sessions a week but was 4 stone overweight. 20 hours a week of physical activity, a combination of aerobic, strength and yoga classes, not to mention looking after a young family, could not enable me to be slim and healthy. No amount of exercise will overcome an unhealthy diet. I proved that! I then changed what I put in my mouth and weight loss happened. Once I started to eat a health balanced nutritious diet the exceed pounds dropped off and I have managed to keep most of them off. (With the exception of Christmas and holiday periods!)

The question that is usually asked of people, when undertaking any task or job is 'Are you fit for it?' The 'fit' is applicable to your health not your weight. So a rugby player would not be able to compete with a sprinter on a track, that's just down to physics, but they are both 'fit' to do their job. Exercise can certainly have an effect on the amount of body composition, the combination of fat and lean muscle within the body but it might not necessarily mean the body would be lighter in weight. Just as the rugby player is physically bigger than

the sprinter, but he is by no means 'fat'. So the next time you think of exercise ask yourself have I raised my heart rate this week through activity? How healthy is my heart? How strong are my bones?

If you need advice with any of this I'm here to help. Exercise for your health to stay healthy and active.

Since 2003, ‘Movember’ has inspired 4 million moustaches worldwide. But what’s it really about? Let’s look behind the moustache. What is MoveMber? The November challenge asks men to grow moustaches and talk about their health, with the aim to increase awareness of men’s health issues and raise funds for the Movember Foundation, a global charity whose mission is “to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health”.The Foundation aims to reduce male mortality from prostate and testicular cancer and improve sufferers’ physical and mental health, and to reduce mortality from male suicide by reducing mental health discrimination and ensuring that men and boys understand how to stay mentally healthy, taking action early when they experience problems. So far, it has raised £346 million and financed 800 research and awareness programs in 21 countries.“In the last 10 years or so... we’ve built the largest global men’s health movement off the back of the simple act of growing a moustache and a sense of fun and mateship,” says Adam Garone, CEO and Co-Founder. Why Focus on Men’s health? In 2011, the average UK life expectancy was 82.6 years for women but just 78.7 years for men, who were 14% more likely

to get cancer and 32% more likely to die from it. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in 25-49 year olds, but highly curable. 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point. The Foundation believes the main reasons for men’s poor health are:• Lack of awareness and

understanding of men’s health issues

• Men’s reluctance to discuss their health and feelings or take action when they’re unwell

• Engaging in risky activities • Mental health stigmasThe Foundation’s most recent research showed that 99% of Movember participants talked to someone about their health, 75% were more aware of potential health issues and 62% had seen a doctor, or intended to, to discover their ‘key numbers’.

the MoveMber Foundation’s advice For MenKnow your key numbers – ‘one of the most important things you can do,’ whatever your age. Track your body mass index, weight, waistline measurement, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels. Know your family history – including illnesses suffered by family members who have passed away. Keep moving – maintain (or

work up to) 20-30 minutes of moderate physical activity, 2-3 days a week, avoid sitting for too long and stay on the move. take action early – ‘Early diagnosis is often key to living a healthy life’. if there’s nothing wrong, your mind is put at rest. Attend that prostate examination and check your testes regularly (http://www.yourprivates.org.uk/ provides a useful guide). don’t smoke- smoking doubles heart disease risk and makes you 20 times more likely to develop lung cancer.eat well – think moderation and variety. Choose fruits, vegetables, whole grains lean meats, poultry, fish, beans and nuts and minerals, and avoid foods and drinks with added sugars or high saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol and salt.sleep well – lack of sleep and poor quality sleep can damage your immune system and increase appetite and vulnerability to stress.stay mentally healthy – spend time doing things you find enjoyable and relaxing. Be proactive about your mental health.drink alcohol only in moderationWear sunscreen – and check skin changes with your doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment dramatically increases melanoma survival rates.

Studio Allure - Japanese EmbroideryStudio Allure is based in the vibrant city area of Aberdeen and run by Bea Farkas a Master Educator qualified professional with over 20 years’ experience.

Today, with over two decades as a master nail technician, Bea specialises in Japanese Embroidery a semi-permanent make up technique also known as micro blading this technique is becoming an incredibly popular treatment as more people are discovering the outstanding results that it can offer.

This amazing Eyebrow treatment suits people who may have the wrong brow shape, hair loss or patchy areas due to over plucking, or medical reasons such as Alopecia or chemotherapy.

Japanese Embroidery or Micro blading gently enhances the clients’ natural features, giving them more confidence in their overall appearance, during the procedure the pigment is implanted in the basal membrane which divides the epidermis from the Dermis layer of the skin. This technique is therefore more superficial than tattooing and not permanent allowing the client to over time adjust the appearance and perfect their desired end result.

Most clients report that there is very little if any discomfort with the procedure, many liken the sensation to a “light scratch” if required a cream containing a local anaesthetic can be applied to eliminate any mild sensations.

This two stage treatment will provide exceptional results, eyebrows can look so natural and beautiful, our clients will after the first treatment return for a touch up treatment which is included

in the cost of the package, approximately 4-6 weeks after the initial treatment. After the second session the full benefits of this outstanding technique are achieved. It is important to understand that this is a two part process and the second, touch up treatment

“Coming from a skilled creative and artistic background, I concluded that semi-permanent makeup was an industry that matched my skills. I listen to my clients and understand and agree their needs and goals, I am then able to advise on what I believe would be the most suitable look for them, my aim is for my clients to walk away after treatment feeling self-confident, assured and beautiful. “

will complete the procedure and, after healing, you will see the final result.

Studio Allure will provide advice and where required products to assist in the important time between the two sessions during which the healing progresses, the application of special oil over the brow area 3-4 times a day for the first few days greatly assists in achieving the

desired end result.

With Christmas fast approaching it’s worthwhile trying to boost your income to cover some of the cost rather than over-using your credit card. So to avoid a huge bill in January and get the New Year off to a good start, try one or two of these ideas and generate some extra cash.

Use cashback sites when buying your presentsIf you like to shop online at Christmas, you might be surprised by just how much cash you can get back when using sites such as Quidco and TopCashBack. There’s no charge to sign up, and depending on the item purchased you can get

between 3% and 10% of your money back.

Once registered, you simply click

through to a retailer and the purchase is tracked

by the cashback site. The

cash is then placed into your account, and paid out

according to

the terms of the company.

There is sometimes a minimum threshold that needs to be reached before your money is paid, however, so it’s worthwhile checking before you choose a site.

Generate extra cash on eBay and AmazonNot only will you declutter and make space for the next influx of presents, selling items online can generate some much-needed extra money at this time of year. There are hundreds of eBay categories, and once you get into a routine of photographing and describing your items, it’s possible to significantly boost your Christmas budget.

Amazon is great for selling books, CDs and DVDs that you no longer want, but they also offer hundreds of different item categories within their marketplace. If you have a lot of books to sell it can be quicker to list them on Amazon rather than eBay, as all you need to do is input the ISBN or title. The site then searches for the book and automatically adds postage, so all you need to do is write a short description.

Use the popularity of local Facebook pagesMany people use Facebook to sell goods locally. It works like a classified ad – you list your item and local people come round to view it before purchasing with cash. The local online groups are run by volunteers, and the listing is free-of-charge which saves you money in comparison with eBay and Amazon.

It’s a very convenient way to declutter and make some extra cash if you don’t want the hassle of posting items, or simply want to sell locally.

Online surveysIf you’re prepared to give your opinion on a wide range of products or issues, you might find that completing online surveys is a good cash-generator. There are plenty of survey sites to try, including Crowdology, Valued Opinions, and iSay.

Many of these sites pay via PayPal and/or Amazon vouchers, but you’ll probably need to build up a minimum amount in your account before payment is made. In some cases this is just £3 or £4.

We can help you make it grow.

Become a mystery shopperIf you’ve got time to spare, this can be a lucrative sideline and offers a great deal of variety. Depending on the mystery shopping company, you could be carrying out a covert visit to a store, ordering a sandwich in Subway or checking out the service in your local bank.

It’s a really interesting way to boost your income, but does require some spare time. Some companies offer evening visits to restaurants or fast-food outlets – even weekends away to report on the level of service provided by leading hotels.

You’ll need to fill in a report online following each visit, and photograph or scan your receipts as proof that you’ve carried it out. Make sure that you read the instructions thoroughly before you set out,

however, as you won’t get paid if you don’t follow them to the letter.

Turn your hobby into a business The UK arts and crafts scene has risen massively in popularity, and there is now a range of websites where you can sell your items. Folksy is one of the biggest of these in the UK, and offers lots of help to set up your account.

Once you’ve registered it’s a little like eBay in that you photograph your handcrafted items, write a description and add the postage amount before uploading for sale. It can be an enjoyable way to earn a little extra money, particularly if you’re already adept at jewellery-making or sewing.

Other websites you might

want to consider are Etsy and RedBubble. If you prefer to sell in person, however, try a Christmas craft fair in your local area – there should be lots of trade and it helps that people can see the quality of items first-hand.

You’ll probably find that your local school or garden centre hold a craft event leading up to Christmas. Alternatively, bigger venues such as National Trust properties or stately homes in your area are also popular locations for craft fairs all year round.

These are just a few ideas for boosting your income – try picking one or two and you might find that you’ve got some money to spare in January.

If you have an awkwardly shaped room or want more than one-size-fits-all options, then your obvious choice is a custom-made kitchen.

Buying a bespoke kitchen is like asking a tailor to make you a dress. Rather than squeezing into a ready-made garment that’s just like thousands of others, you get a unique and perfectly fitting outfit that makes the most of your best bits and disguises the worst. It’s attractive, comfortable and, whilst a little more costly (okay, sometimes a lot more costly), it will always look good and should last a lifetime. In kitchen terms, this means that a bespoke commission can cope with wonky walls, strange dimensions and interesting

architectural features, will adapt to whatever’s required of it, whether chaotic family meals or haute cuisine dinner parties, and will use high quality materials that will stand the test of time. What’s more, you’re guaranteed that it’s one of a kind.

Why buy bespoke?Buy an off-the-peg kitchen and your choices are limited. Yes, there’ll be a selection of door styles, carcass sizes and, hopefully, several different worktops, but that’s about it. If your wall is a few centimetres longer than the standard run of cupboards, you’ll end up with a gap. It might be called a tray slot or space for a pull-out towel rail, but it’s still a gap. A bespoke kitchen, on the other hand, will be built to the exact dimensions of the room, large or small. You want

extra-high base units? You’ve got them, to the millimetre. Extra-deep worktops? No problem. A combination of different, perhaps unusual, materials? Just say the word. With bespoke you can choose the type of timber or the colour of the paint (if you’re having a painted kitchen, you could match the shade to, say, your favourite mug). You can specify any worktop, handle or appliance you like, or even go so far as to have special matching sockets fitted. As managing director and chief designer Andrew Hall, of Woodstock Furniture, says: ‘The beauty of a bespoke kitchen design service is that you will end up with an ergonomic, cohesive and unified space that is completely unique and tailored to your individual needs.’

All in the detailWith a bespoke kitchen, no detail is spared. It may be the dovetailing of the drawers or the way veneers are matched so they run perfectly across from one cupboard or drawer to the next. It may be the combination of base and wall cupboards, perhaps with open shelves and free-standing dressers; or it may be the size and shape of the island unit – square, rectangular, curved, stepped or any design you like. Special appliances or cooking utensils can be measured and interiors designed to suit, for

the ultimate, ‘everything in its place’ room that combines good looks with functionality.

Working with a designerBefore contacting a bespoke kitchen company, it’s wise to start considering what type of kitchen you want; otherwise, the possibilities could simply be overwhelming. Many people find it helpful to keep a scrapbook of designs they like. That said, an experienced designer will be able to guide you through the maze of choices, asking the right questions about your style and how you use your kitchen in order to reach the best design. There will be one or more site visits for consultations, planning and measuring up, followed by drawings and costings. Once you have approved these, it

will take several weeks or even months for your furniture to be hand-built and, during this time, you should complete any structural work. Then your units will be fitted by an expert team and templates made for worktops and splashbacks – which will then be made to measure. Finally, there’s likely to be a sign-off visit to fine-tune any problems and check that you’re happy with the result.

Bonfire Safety Tips Advice from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is to attend a safely organised bonfire and firework display. However if you must have a bonfire at home make sure it is well away from buildings, vehicles, trees, hedges, fences, power lines, telecommunications equipment and sheds - and you must ensure that smoke does not cause a nuisance to neighbours or flying embers endanger neighbouring property.

Never drink alcohol if you are tending a bonfire or setting off fireworks – remember it is an offence to consume alcohol in a public place.

To reduce the emission of harmful smoke and combustion products bonfires should comprise of untreated wood and paper based materials only.

There is a danger of explosion from pressurised containers or sealed vessels amongst bonfire material or irresponsibly thrown on burning bonfires.

Never throw fireworks on bonfires.

Never use flammable liquids to ignite bonfires – use proprietary fire lighters.

Smoke from bonfires must not pose a public nuisance, affect visibility on roads or otherwise inconvenience vehicles.

Sparks, flying embers or burning debris must not endanger nearby property.

Never leave a burning/smouldering bonfire unsupervised – make sure it is completely extinguished.

Any bonfire failing to satisfy safety conditions or where people are behaving irresponsibly may be deemed dangerous and as such, subject to being either removed, extinguished or otherwise made safe.

Bonfires and the LawIt is an offence under Section 56 of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 for any person to lay or light a fire in a public place so

as to endanger any other person or give them reasonable cause for alarm or annoyance or so as to endanger any property.

It is illegal for anyone under 18 years of age to possess fireworks.

Throwing fireworks or setting them off in a public place (anywhere other than your own garden) is illegal.

You are not permitted to use fireworks between the hours of 11pm and 7am on any day except on 5 November when the curfew extends to midnight.

If you know anything about fires that have been started deliberately in your area, you can call the Crimestoppers Scotland hotline on 0800 555 111. All calls are completely anonymous and do not require names or personal details and you will not be asked to give evidence in court.

Fly tipping during the Bonfire and Fireworks season is a major cause of fire and it is also a criminal offence. If you see fly tipping or know of an area where there is a build-up of refuse or combustible material, contact your local authority cleansing or environmental department to arrange uplift.

You can also contact the Dumb Dumpers Stop Line on 0845 2 30 40 90 or visit www.dumbdumpers.org for more information.
