Over the last few years, DLR GfR mbH has esta-blished itself as a competent partner in the Euro-pean satellite navigation programme Galileo. As operators of the Galileo Control Centre in Ober-pfaffenhofen, we form a core component of the system.

Our activities take place within one of the currently most ambitious and expanding sectors, the aerospace industry. Alongside space operations and development of the associated facilities, we also provide aerospace-related products and services.This combination creates a broad range of very interesting job and career opportunities.

DLR GfR mbH

DLR GfR mbH is a company that offers reliable, safe and secure services in the aerospace sector.In the Galileo Control Centre in Oberpfaffenhofen we operate and monitor the Galileo satellite constellation on behalf of the European Commission.

DLR GfR mbH has implemented a technical infrastruc-ture that guarantees 99.99% availability, certified to “secret“ level and monitored around the clock.We operate both ground stations and control and test systems. DLR GfR mbH is also certified as an air navi-gation service provider for communication and navi-gation services at airports.

Our company is a full subsidiary of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR). DLR GfR mbH itself holds 50% of the joint venture Spaceopal GmbH, headquartered in Munich, which was founded to acquire and handle Galileo work orders.

A further 50% share is held by the Italian company Telespazio S.p.A., which operates the second Galileo Control Centre in Fucino, Italy.

About us

Operations Department

The specific tasks of the currently approx. 50 emplo-yees of the DLR GfR mbH Operations Department re-volve around the secure and reliable operation of the Galileo satellites. Correct functioning of the satellites is essential for optimum satellite navigation.

The responsibilities of the aerospace engineers and other engineering scientists include synchronising the atomic clocks on board the satellites, high-precision orbit determination and the generation of navigation messages. Accurately performing this work requires intensive preparation: the necessary understanding of satellite control is taught by the internal training team; trainees learn procedures and practise them in realistic simulations.In addition, we also develop new navigation-related services, such as a train collision avoidance system.DLR GfR mbH is also the first space control centre to have been certified as an air navigation service provider (ANSP) for CNS (communications, navigation and surveillance) services for air traffic.This means DLR GfR mbH is now authorised to provide services in the aviation sector.

Infrastructure Department

The core competence of the Infrastructure Depart-ment is developing, operating and maintaining the infrastructure of satellite ground stations.

In order to ensure smooth operations of the European Satellite Navigation System a high availability infra-structure is managed by a reliable team at the Galileo Control Centre (GCC-D) in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germa-ny. Around 30 engineers and technicians manage and maintain services including antenna systems, security systems, integrated logistics support, infrastructures in server and control rooms, power supply and climate control.

All services are aligned to ensure an extremely high availability infrastructure of 99.9999% in satellite operations. The Infrastructure Department manages several projects in the Galileo context such as the GCC-D Hosting Service and the Galileo Signal Monito-ring Facility (SMF) using the 30m dish antenna owned by DLR Weilheim.

About us

Navigation Services Department

The Navigation Services department develops value-added services for Communication, Naviga-tion and Surveillance (CNS), based on Global Satellite Navigation Systems, such as Galileo.

DLR GfR offers a market-oriented service portfolio, based on our competences gained as a manufacturer-independent Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) and our extensive experience as Galileo Service Ope-rator. A team of aerospace engineers and physicists offer consulting services for example to international airports or stakeholders for navigation applications and digitalisation of smart cities. This extends from selection and implementation of drone detection technology to establishment of safe and secure CNS infrastructure for future mobility solutions like autono-mous driving and flying.Additionally the department shapes future multimodal traffic concepts for all types of vehicles. For this DLR GfR develops the requirements and implementation of reliable communication links, precise navigation with integrity and trustworthy surveillance ensuring safe and secure operations.

Information Technology Department

Over 25 employees are currently working for the DLR GfR mbH IT Department, as maintainers, computer scientists, software developers and cyber security en-gineers. They are all supporting GfR projects with over 120 different ITIL driven services to ensure the avai-lability of the ground control segment infrastructure, the operation of the two Galileo Control Centers, the Galileo Service Center GSC and the operational environment of the GfR.

This includes diagnostic tasks on existing components, incident analysis, system designs and the support of system enhancements. Additionally the development of software solutions for analysis of the satellite per-formance, web applications and software for internal business processes is a continuous task as well as monitoring, encryption and malware identification in the scope of information security and data protection with respect to networks and systems.

Five lakes and the Alpine Foreland

The well-known Fünfseenland, or five lakes area, is one of Upper Bavaria’s most popular regions, com-prising the five lakes Ammersee, Starnberger See, Pilsensee, Wörthsee and the Weßlinger See, which lies directly next to DLR GfR mbH. A hilly morainal landscape formed by ice-age glaciers and dotted with lakes and ponds.

With its numerous sights, the popular bathing and holiday destination, once home to celebrities such as Empress Sissi or King Ludwig II, has something to offer for everyone. A large number

of cycling and hiking routes in and around

Art lovers will enjoy the famous Pinakotheken as well as the city’s many other museums and exhibi-tions.The Englischer Garten, which at a length of 10 kilometres is even larger than New York’s Central Park, is a perfect oasis to recuperate from the bustle of the big city.

And for night owls, Munich offers a huge variety of venues and popular clubs that are open until the early hours.

After my traineeship I took evening classes and successfully studied to become a business economist. This allowed me to join DLR GfR mbH as a project buyer. The project language is English – a perfect opportunity to apply and develop my language skills.

My job is very varied: from extensive calls for proposals to concluding maintenance and service contracts to procuring equipment, there’s a little bit of everything.I am very happy here, I feel supported and I am given a lot of trust.

I joined DLR GfR mbH in 2011 and have since been responsible for the fire alarm and public address systems as well as all fire dampers in the building.

What I particularly like about working here are the flexible working hours thanks to our flexitime model, which isn’t some-thing I’d ever had before, and the very good coopera-tion and team spirit within the Infrastructure team.

DLR GfR mbH is always open to the needs of its employees and to new sug-gestions, and we are also given excellent support in the form of a wide range of corporate training options.
