WESTFIELD AND THE FLYING BOMB ATTACKS

Y ou may have seen our own Ken Munday on an edition of BBC TV South-East’s ‘Inside Out’ programme that looked at the V1 attacks on the region during the summer of 1944 talking

about his experiences of the V1 Flying Bomb or ‘Doodlebug exactly seventy years ago’. In such a relatively small parish as Westfield it is quite astonishing to note that no less than twelve of these deadly missiles fell during that fateful summer, with another on the parish boundary. Several others were exploded in mid-air by RAF fighters or anti-aircraft defences. In total, the old Battle Rural District area had 374 of these weapons downed within its boundaries and at Westfield

there was one tragic death when a flying bomb, downed by an RAF fighter, landed on top of Spring Cottage, Westfield (near the current Doctors’ surgery), and badly injured 23 year old Doris Lynch. Trapped in the rubble of her home she was dug free and taken to the Buchanan Hospital, Hastings, where she died of her injuries the next day. Doris, who was in an advanced state of pregnancy, is buried in Westfield Parish Churchyard and her grave is still regularly tended by Ken Munday. Ken was deeply moved by the tragedy, right on his doorstep, and involving somebody whom he knew in the village. War, in all its horrors, had paid too close a visit to the village. Sadly, Doris’ grave was completely unmarked until recently (see left) although it has always been kept pristine and carefully mown by Ken.

Andy Saunders, another local resident, actually got the film commissioned by the BBC and put Ken and the local story forward for inclusion. Andy also appeared in the film but talking about the first use of the RAF’s Meteor jet to counter the V1 menace, but in that instance involving an episode further over into Kent. (Those who wonder what a Meteor was, may have seen until very recently, the same type of aeroplane as it sat atop a pole outside St Leonard’s Motors, near Tesco.) Launched from sites all along the French coast, the V1 campaign began shortly after D-Day and took a terrible toll on life and property across the south-east where many were brought down before reaching their intended target: London. The onslaught continued through August although gradually the launch sites were all neutralised, either through bombing by the RAF or, gradually, as they were over-run by the invading Allied forces. It is difficult now to comprehend the terror of those weeks during the summer of 1944 when death was an ever present threat. The ghastly noise of the bombs led to bated breath as residents hoped the engine would keep going. Eventually, though, the fuel on the V1 would cut and it was then a case of fifteen seconds to impact and a colossal explosion. However, many of those that caused damage locally were actually brought down by our own defences. Hard though that was, the difficult decision had been made; they were less likely to cause devastation and death if downed over rural areas before they inevitably impacted on London itself. The next time you approach Westfield along Westfield Lane and take the sharp left hand bend into Church Lane and the village, notice the bungalow directly ahead of you. It is, in fact, the first house as you come into the village proper. This house took an almost direct hit from a V1 ‘Doodlebug’ and was so badly damaged it had to be re-built. Luckily, the occupants had taken cover in an air raid shelter in the front garden and were unharmed. Then, as you pass the War Memorial on the left, stop sometime and look at the names. Here you will find the name of Doris Margaret Linch, Westfield’s V1 casualty. She and her unborn child have never been forgotten by Ken Munday, whom we must thank for his determination to care for her un-marked grave and his remembrance of her. The summer months of 1944 were, of course, some of the most terrible and frightening times for the village but we shouldn’t forget another villager either, Fred Milward, as a member of the 9th Parachute Regiment, had dropped into Normandy on D-Day. He was involved in ferocious fighting at Merville, and then further inland where he was wounded. Fred was, of course, part of the liberating force that played a part in the German defeat and in stopping the V-Weapon attacks. Fred features in another article on page 17, looking at his exploits on D-Day but for the moment, the Parish salutes you both, Fred and Ken! A.S.

From the Vicarage - Jesus’ Resurrection

In Luke’s gospel 24:13-35, we read an account of Jesus’ resurrection. ‘The Road to Emmaus’, as it is often called, is probably one of the greatest stories of the New Testament. What happened during the disciples' journey on the road is quite amazing. At the start these two people are tired, weary, upset and disappointed about the events that have taken place over the last few weeks. They are also quite mystified because they had put their trust in Jesus and His teaching, and now that Jesus had died, as they saw it, He appeared to be gone for good. There was no point in carrying on with the mission, they just had to go home and forget about it. But by the end of the story they are energized with strength and renewed hope to take the 7-mile journey back to Jerusalem. All because they suddenly came to see that Jesus, whom they had given up for dead, was alive and among them! The reality was that death was not the end - Jesus was alive, just as He said he would be. The scriptures had come true and their lives were transformed.

For us the story reminds us of three things. First, just as he did with the disciples in the story, Jesus walks at our speed. Jesus does not race ahead expecting us to be clever, or to understand everything or to know all the answers. He is with us and walks by our side. Second, Jesus answers our questions. He wants us to think about the things that puzzle us, and talk to each other about them. Sometimes, when we do that, it will be just as if He is speaking to us. And third, through the breaking of bread He accepts our hospitality. Jesus wants us to know that he longs to be invited into our lives, our journeys, our hopes and fears. He does not force his way in, but waits to be invited.

For us, too, there is the assurance that Jesus is all he claimed to be and that he can bring transformation to our lives. This means that whatever our age, or our life situations, we can have hope. In Jesus the new future has arrived and we can look forward with hope to something better, and can live each day in the light of that anticipated future. In this story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we can discover the life-changing presence of Jesus on the road with us, in the Bible, and in the broken bread.

Spring migrant birds in the Parish

D uring the months of April and May spring migrant birds have been arriving all over Sussex from their wintering areas in Africa. Many of these have been seen in our own

Parish and posted on the Westfield Wildlife website. For those of you who may not use a computer, or have never visited the website, here is a taster of recent postings, starting with an interesting record from Ron in Greenacres: "Just seen a pair of Ravens having a go at a Peregrine Falcon above our garden (12.15 pm Thursday 17 April)". And from Dave Pankhurst - "Chiffchaff, Blackcap, House Martin, Swallow, Red Kite, Whitethroat, Willow Warbler, Common Sandpiper, Cuckoo, and Yellow Wagtail. The last four were near to Brede Waterworks today Monday 21 April". Another posting stated that the Cuckoo was heard on Easter Monday in Wheel Lane across to New Cut, so probably the same Cuckoo Dave heard! By mid-May many other spring migrants will be with us. Some more common species to look out for in the countryside around the Parish, with footpaths alongside the river Brede and streams being the most likely places to see them from, include Hobby, Swift, Lesser Whitethroat, Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Nightingale etc. It is interesting to note that there have been more sightings of Ravens in the village just recently. It seems likely these birds are travelling further afield from their nesting area along the Hastings cliffs in search of food. Please visit westfieldwildlife.wordpress.com for all the latest news on birds and other wildlife from around the Parish, and to report your own sightings. Westfield Wildlife will be 3 years old in September. Although we have many viewings of the website from around the world, our busiest day was on 10 August last year with 274 visitors after the posting on a rare Long-tailed Blue butterfly sighting in Pett. What will this year bring? At the recent Annual Parish Assembly we were very pleased to be presented with a ‘Certificate of thanks’ for setting up and maintaining Westfield Wildlife! We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their news and photos - we couldn’t have done it without you!

COMMUNITY SCARECROW COMPETITION 2014 Display your scarecrow from 24 ~ 31 May

By popular request Westfield Horticultural Society are holding another of our famous Community Scarecrow Competitions.

Another opportunity to let your imagination run riot! Whatever skills and materials you have to hand will be eligible as long as the end result fulfils the basic criteria of a scarecrow – namely a free-standing representation of a human or other being that would deter birds from raiding the crops around it. FREE ENTRY= Rules/entry forms available from Westfield News, Archer Butchers, www.westfieldvillage.co.uk and Annie Nijhuis, 01424 754337. Submit your entry form by Saturday 10 May (newsletter readers 22 May) to be eligible for judging Prizes and Certificates will be awarded. Entries are welcome from all age groups and walks of life. Westfield residents and businesses have previously demonstrated that they can be fantastically creative; for these celebrations to succeed we need as many groups and individuals as possible to build, have great fun and display their scarecrows prominently around the parish.

Westfield Community Association and Westfield Horticultural Society are delighted to support the national campaign to see the country awash with field poppies during the centenary period in commemoration of all those who lost their lives in World War One. Poppy seeds, purchased by the WCA, are available free to any Westfield resident who would like to sow them. WHS began distribution at their Spring Show and packets, with instructions, are now in Westfield News, Westfield Doctors’ Surgery and The Hub at the Plough.

Westfield WI

F ebruary’s speaker was Sue Fisher, who told us about her fascinating time living and working in the remote island of St.Helena, ‘a dot in the Atlantic’.

Later in February members enjoyed a ‘Christmas’ lunch at the Brickwall Hotel. Joe Mendell had members laughing in March as he entertained us with ‘Bob Newhart Rides Again’, acting out some of the famous deadpan comedy sketches, including ‘The Driving Instructor’ and ‘Introducing Tobacco to Civilisation’. Many members attended the Rother Group meeting at Staplecross in March, when local historian Geoff Hutchinson, performing in costume, brought to life the story of a Benedictine monk at Battle Abbey. Also in March, Brian Freeland told us about his experiences as a theatre stage manager with his ‘View from the Wings’, which proved to be a very funny and rather revealing set of anecdotes, many about well-known stage celebrities. In May members will be discussing the resolution about increasing organ donation, which will go forward to the NFWI AGM in June. These serious issues will be followed by a members’ time of light-hearted experiences. The popular Strawberry Tea meeting is on 10 June, and Heather Woodward tells ‘The Tale of Beatrix Potter’ on 8 July. A lunch replaces the formal meeting in August. Westfield WI has around forty members, and meets in the Parish Hall on the second Tuesday of the month at 2.15 pm. As well as monthly meetings, there are craft and interest afternoons, a book club, village events, outings and lunches to enjoy. New members are always welcome. Do ring the President,

Julie Lloyd on 01424 754013 for more information.

The ladies of Westfield W.I. are able to provide teas for up to 50 people in the Parish Hall, subject to availability, at £5.00 per head.

Recently the Rye & District Lions have also made donations of £500 to Hastings, Rye and District Scouts to help 5 scouts attend the World Jamboree in Japan, £250 to the Girl Guide Association for help towards the celebration of 100 years of Brownies to be held at Herstmonceux Castle and £250 to the Wurlitzer Academy at Rye Academy.

Four Rye Lions travelled to the Kent, Sussex & Surrey Air Ambulance Trust’s base at Marden, Kent, to present another £500 donation. While they were there the crew received an emergency call and the Lions were able to watch the helicopter take off.

Rye Lions have also enjoyed several social events including the yearly quiz against Hythe and Romney Lions and the annual skittles match between the ladies and the men.

You will see our stall this summer at various local village fetes, starting at Westfield on 28 June. We hope to see many residents there; come and talk to us as Rye Lions would welcome any new members from Westfield. In fact, anyone interested in finding out more about this club should visit the website at www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/ryedistrict or ring Terry 01797 252382.

Fred Milward Presented to Frederick Milward of Westfield, East Sussex For the 70th anniversary of the World War 11 D-Day landings and commemorating his part in this historic event. From the people of Westfield in gratitude for his service to King and Country in defence of freedom, his selfless devotion to duty and courage shown during the crucial assault on the Merville Gun Battery,

Normandy on D-Day 6th June 1944 when serving with the 9th Battalion of the Parachute Regiment.

Presented by Westfield Parish Council on behalf of the residents of Westfield at the Annual Parish Assembly on 29th April 2014

A beautifully written framed scroll stated: (photo: Polly Wells)

F red was 18 in 1943 when he joined the Sussex Regiment but within six months was volunteering for the 9th Battalion, the

Parachute Regiment for more action and adventure. In 1944, super-fit Fred was in the thick of training including on a reconstruction, later revealed as the Merville Gun Battery, complete with roads, obstacles, trees, shrubs and landscaping. It was so precise that when Fred and colleagues were dropped in for real, and not without drama, he knew his exact whereabouts. Unfortunately there were many causalities. Fred was wounded a month later in France. He remained on the Reserve list for ten years and learnt to fly. Once again, as in the past, Fred will attend the Commemorations, the 70th takes place in Normandy next month. Before that, Fred is very occupied with other appointments and recently BBC TV has interviewed him about his experiences for a D-Day documentary.

WESTFIELD BROWNIES & GUIDES

Both units had a great Thinking Day at Buckswood School where they had a chance to learn about the world centres owned by the Guide Movement and were inspired to start their own camp blankets for future use and to keep as souvenirs. They tried different types of craft which apart

from the iced biscuits which were eaten straight away were brought home at the end of the day along with commemorative badges and gifts from Buckswood School. The Brownies had a chance to meet and groom the horses while the Guides entered a 5 aside football competition against the other guide units attending the day. The Brownies spent the term trying challenges from the last 100 years as part of their birthday celebrations ending with each girl receiving a resin bear and badge as mementos while the Guides completed a badge and met up with Peasmarsh guides at an Easter party organized and hosted by Brede Guides which include an Easter egg hunt and Biscuit icing. We were visited by Catherine from the Horticultural Society who gave the girls ideas for the show classes and encouraged the girls to enter some of the children’s classes. Most of the Brownie unit have booked to go to the Science Centre at Herstmoneux in June for Sussex East’s County adventure called Star Quest and have just started 2 outdoor badges for the summer term which will include a hike, a treasure hunt and a scavenger hunt as well as learning about road safety. The Guides are hoping to learn some old guiding skills while doing their Guiding Traditions badge as well as doing lots of outside activities.

Both units have spaces for new girls to join us especially Brownies who have only had one new 7year old this term and we are always willing to welcome back any girl that came along for a short while then left at either Brownies or Guides. A fter a well-deserved rest over Easter, we re-opened the school doors on Wednesday 23 April. The children are raring to go as we set forth on our new topics for the summer terms

including River Deep Mountain High, Our Environment, What’s in my back yard, Greeks and Romans, and Westfield Wellies. With outings planned already to Great Dixter and Frog Firle Farm, we are praying for the fine weather to last for some great days out in the open. We are very pleased to be able to bring you news of our recent Ofsted visit which went exceptionally well; we were awarded another GOOD result, with a number of areas within the school rated outstanding. Congratulations go to all our teaching staff, whose hard work and enthusiasm has enabled us to achieve the best results for our pupils, plus thanks also to all supporting staff who ensure everything comes together at the end of every day. The children were a credit to the school and community for the exemplary behaviour during the two inspection days. We were honoured to receive a visit from the Mayor of Hastings and Mrs Jean Hobson (committee member of Hastings Week) in February (photo right), presenting a certificate to our Year 4 class in appreciation of the Bayeux Tapestry art work the class produced for Hastings Week last October.

Our building work is now nearly complete. Other than a few finishing touches, all our classes are back where they should be, enjoying more space and freedom and a better learning environment for all. It is surprising how such a comparatively small extension has made such an enormous difference. We are very grateful to all our pupils, staff, parents and neighbouring community for their patience and understanding during all the trials the project has thrown at us. A special thank you must also be extended to Geary Place residents, Amicus Horizon, the New Inn proprietor and everyone who has kindly donated parking spaces for our staff over the last few months. The WCA and School Summer Fayre will take place on the school field on Saturday 28 June from 1pm – 4pm. Please come along and support this whole community event. Fun and games for all including Rodeo Bull, tug of war, hog roast, sumo wrestling, coconut shy, bouncy castle, tombolas, raffles, entertainment and much much more. As usual, the grand finale to the school year will be our Years 5 and 6 production. This year we will be staging the Bard’s classic fantasy comedy ‘A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream’. The preparations are already underway and as usual this should be a spectacular end to the school year. Sadly we will be saying goodbye to our Year 6 pupils in July as they spread their wings for pastures new. They will follow hot on the heels of our Reception Class teacher, Miss Bright, who bids us farewell in May as she prepares for her first baby’s arrival.

Westfield Community Association

It is well known that we have a good hall in Westfield for the community to use for a wide range of purposes from dancing and short mat bowls to a venue for private parties and school activities.

Maintenance of the building inside and out keeps the members of the Manage-ment Committee on their toes whilst Rachel Pritchard is hands on daily with managing the hirings and cleaning. Don’t forget, if you'd like to hire either of the

halls for a single or multi event, why not contact Rachel to see where slots exist. We still have vacancies for morning and afternoon sessions in the main hall on a Thursday and Friday.

To add to the events marking the anniversaries for the First and Second World Wars, here in Westfield plans are in hand to celebrate 30 years since the official opening of the Community Hall. So much hard work and fund-raising was undertaken by many residents, some still with us and others in our memories - do you remember the ‘Buy-a-Brick’ project? These are the names on the bricks in the entrance hall.

In order to demonstrate there is community spirit around, do come and enjoy a free drink with us on 23 June when we hold our AGM - the business side will be dealt with swiftly. This is an opportunity for a social to meet others who are involved with the WCA from the bingo players to the admin team. Maybe this will be a time when a long-awaited Secretary for the WCA is found; this is not an onerous task but would help the Chairman circulate the minutes etc. and be part of the team.

Used Postage Stamps Please continue to leave stamps at the

Doctors’ Surgery for the WCA. Thank you.

Exercise is your Medicine Here is the bad news:

Low cardio respiratory fitness is the biggest risk factor in all causes of death compared to the well-known problems of obesity, smoking, high blood pressure, raised cholesterol and diabetes.

Poor cardiovascular fitness is actually worse for overall health than smoking, diabetes and obesity combined!

Now for the really good news:

Regular physical exercise will: Decrease the risk of early death by 30% (yes it will help you live better and longer!) Reduce heart disease by 40% Reduce strokes by 27% Reduce dementia by 40% Reduce bowel cancer by 30-40% Reduce breast cancer by 20-30% Reduce hip fractures by 50%

Studies have shown that being inactive is as dangerous to your health as smoking 20 cigarettes a day!

So, here’s what you could do:

Aim to be active every day. Ideally activity should add up to over 150 minutes per week by participating in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on 5 or more days a week, or in multiple bouts of 10 minutes or more.

Comparable benefits can be achieved through vigorous activity of 75 minutes a week, or through a combination of moderate and vigorous activity.

Adults should also undertake physical activity to improve muscle strength on at least two days a week.

Physical exercise could include the following activities:

Walking briskly, cycling, swimming, dancing, gardening, gym activities, football, washing your car by hand, apple picking, tai chi, golf, rambling……..All adults should minimize extended periods of sitting by standing instead of sitting, walking instead of standing, park your car as far as possible from the shops and walk; use the stairs instead of the lift/escalator. So why don’t you make an appointment at Reception and discuss your exercise “prescription” with Dr Andrew Meilak and improve your health and wellbeing? You may be interested in a discounted gym scheme through your GP to help you get started! Dr Andrew Meilak

1st Westfield Scout Group

T he Group is flourishing with good numbers in all sections and currently we have a

waiting list for Beavers. We are always looking for adult help either on a one off basis, becoming a warranted Leader or, maybe, on a more regular basis. If you think you can be of assistance or have a particular hobby or skill that would be of interest to the young people please contact Frances on 754548. Our annual Duck Race took place on 6 April. The weather was not great early on but a good number of people came and the race, as always, was great fun. We had some burgers and hot dogs unsold but still made a profit of £158. Many thanks to everyone involved, especially Archers the butchers for selling ducks prior to the race. The Beavers recently visited Pets at Home and had a very enjoyable visit learning how to care for and handle small animals. They each received a certificate and badge. Everyone was encouraged to hold the rabbits and guinea pigs but the reptiles were left to the expert! Two Beavers, Tommy Kelly and Harry Fletcher have attained the Chief Scouts Bronze award and are awaiting presentation of their certificates from the Assistant District Beaver Leader. This is the highest award that Beavers can achieve and both lads have worked hard, well done. We entered a team of Scouts in the District Rifle shooting competition which we won, not only that Amanda Bryant from Westfield won the best

shooter. Two Scouts, Alex Wilde and Ross Jones have been selected to attend the World Jamboree in 2015 being held in Japan, well done lads a great achievement. Akela, Frances Richardson, is going as part of the International service team. Ex-Westfield Scout Andrew Bolton (now a Scout leader in Reigate) is also going as part of the communications team. We had a really good turnout of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and parents to service the first drinks station for the Hastings half marathon. The weather was great and, with little wind picking up all the discarded cups, was a lot easier job this year. Looking forward to a really nice summer so that we can plan exciting activities outdoors.

The First Team have completed a good season fairing much better against the top teams in the Sussex County League Division 2 than against the lower placed teams. This has resulted in a mid-table finish. Following a disappointing quarter final defeat in the SCL Div 2 cup, the team was successful in defeating Bexhill United 3-0 to win the Hastings Senior Cup for the second time in the clubs 87 year history. Having been top of the Sussex County League Reserve Section East League for most of the season the Reserve team finally finished their League in 3rd place. However they were successful in defeating the East Sussex League Premier Division Champions Hollington United to win the Hastings Intermediate Cup. They are also involved in a Weald of Kent Charity Cup quarter final against Lydd Town Reserves. The 3rd team players, who play their home games at Claverham school, have also had an interrupted season with the poor winter weather conditions. However in their first season in the ESLD 4 they have finished in mid-table. This year’s End of Season Presentation Evening at Westfield Community Hall is on 17 May.

R ichard’s Ramblings ~ Richard Perchard UNLAWFUL DETENTION

I once had to visit a lady who, no longer a spring chicken, had been taking an afternoon nap and had awoken to find a youth in her kitchen. Seeing her he had fled and was never traced. He made no threats and nothing was disturbed. She wanted to know if she could have detained him. This is a question most frequently asked and one which I am no longer qualified to answer but the police service never recommends attempting to detain a suspect. It is far better to mentally note a good description of the intruder and ‘phone 999 immediately. This elderly lady could never have detained the young man anyway, taking into account the differences in age and physical ability. There may also have been an innocent explanation for the youth’s presence in her home unlikely though it may seem. Consider the following true story. A family moved into a house on an estate where all the houses were the same. The husband liked a drink and had developed a thirst at the end of a stressful day moving home. While his wife unpacked more belongings he located the nearest pub. After a couple of hours and more than a couple of drinks he navigated his way home. Letting himself in he made his way upstairs and started to undress for bed. His attempt to actually get into bed was interrupted by the most blood curdling screams. Yes, he had gone to the wrong house and tried to get into the wrong bed, actually occupied by a lady who was expecting no visitors. The police attended and after a couple of hours in custody the truth was established, apologies accepted and the man was delivered home, the correct one this time. I understand that the unpacking of personal effects was delayed for a time while the man’s wife considered his story and eventually forgave him. The other party also remembered to lock her door. Please get into the routine of checking doors and windows before leaving home or retiring for the night. It will only take a few moments. This applies to sheds, outbuildings and vehicles. Ladders should be secured and any garden tools put away in case they are used to force a door or window. Crime prevention technology is now more affordable. The internet allows us to search for reasonably priced window and shed alarms as well as dependable and good quality camera systems. Best wishes.

At our Easter Bonnet parade the children looked wonderful in their home made hats and enjoyed singing songs to their families and friends. We have got our growing garden ready, the children have started to plant fruit and vegetables, if you have any spare plants or time to come and help in our garden we would be very grateful. Once again we say a big thank you to ‘Westfield Trees’ for donating the hugest pile of wood chippings. The children spent the session using wheelbarrows to transport it into the garden then raked it over, they had a brilliant time. This is another busy term with lots of messy play, visits from the Emergency Services, a trip to Drusillas, our sports day and a Barnardo’s Toddle Waddle for which we thank the school for letting us use their field. At the moment we are full but we will have spaces in September when the older children go off to school, anyone interested is welcome to drop in at any time; we are open Mon-Fri 9-12 noon and Thurs 12-3pm or for more information contact Julie on 07790744404, email or check out our website.

St Michael’s Hospice Neighbours has a campaign in Westfield. This scheme is looking for people to volunteer their time by giving a few hours a week, fortnight or month on a day and time that suits them, within their local area, to help with everyday tasks such as putting out the washing, walking the dog, cooking and daily chores – or just chatting over a cuppa. The first Westfield volunteers are being trained, but more are needed. Please contact Jane Cave on 01424 445177 ext. 6012, or email [email protected] if you think you can help.
