You should have checked the PT.Neon has 10 electrons
10 10 18
Ions are formed by the gain/lose of electrons.So the proton number should remain the same.
S has 10 electronsT has 18 electrons.
Since the number of protons and electrons are not equal, S and T must be ions.
But why non-metals ?? Did you check the PT ?S: Grp VII T: Grp VI
This is a theory question. Check your handout if you are not sure.
Z can only give 1 electron each timeY needs 2 more electrons to fill up its valence shell.
In SO4
3 2
In2(SO4)3

Y has
Y has 7 valence electrons (X)
It is in Grp VII
X has 5 valence electrons ()
It is in Grp V
You need to check using the PT.
Potassium: Grp I -> metalChlorine: Grp VII -> non-metal
Both will react to form ionic compound* high m.pt & b.pt * soluble in water * conduct when molten
Methanol is a covalent compound -> made up of non-metals (C, H & O)
Properties of covalent: low m.pt and b. ptdo not conduct at all
CH3OH
