We all know that dur-ing the wintertime the sun sets early and we all just like to sit around the house and get ready for Christmas.
Shopping is on your mind, Thanksgiving dinner is being planned and the kids are running around excited about Santa Claus. People are so busy, they tend to forget that they need to exercise.
Water aerobics is a fan-tastic way to stay healthy and active. The Henderson YMCA offers many differ-ent water aerobics classes that will allow you to stay active during the coming months.
Here are some water aerobics facts from the Hayes-Taylor YMCA in Greensboro:
• Going by the defini-tion of aqua aerobics, a participant can greatly benefit by achieving overall muscular develop-ment and cardiovascular improvement.
• Since the water buoy-ancy supports up to 80 percent your weight (de-pending on how deep you are into water), the strain on the joints, back and
torso is greatly reduced in comparison with land exercises.
• Joint pains don’t both-er you much during water aerobics exercises. You can continue exercising without this anxiety. This helps in the long term by
increasing flexibility.• You will see quicker
build-up of toned and endured muscle mass all around because of the additional efforts made against water resistance.
• Water aerobics is the only exercise that keeps
you cool and comfortable. Throughout the workout your body temperature remains constant.
If you have any ques-tions, contact Justin Lovin, aquatic supervi-sor at (252) 438-2144 or [email protected].

Lights On Afterschool Rally scheduled Oct. 20
Joint pains won’t bother participants much during water aerobics exercises. You can continue exercising without this anxiety. This helps in the long term by increasing flexibility.
The Henderson Fam-ily YMCA will conduct a science fair Oct. 20 as part of Lights On Af-terschool, a nationwide rally that is expected to include some 7,500 events this year. In all, 1 million Americans are expected to join in events across the country to draw atten-tion to the need for more afterschool programs. At the event, parents and supporters will have the
opportunity to sign a new petition that urges lawmakers to avoid de-nying or diverting funds for these programs.
The Henderson Family YMCA After School Camp’s Lights On Afterschool event will be at the YMCA from 4:30-6 p.m. During this time the staff of the YMCA will be on hand to give tours and answer

Assisting the YMCA and Girls on the Run of Vance County are just two volunteer opportunities that people, such as Kathy McCann (above), can take advantage of at the YMCA.
Why should I volunteer? ‘Y’ not!
Do you have a few extra hours on your hands? Do you have a special skill? If so, consider volunteering at the Henderson Family YMCA.
The YMCA is a not-for-profit volunteer-driven organization. By becoming a volunteer, you are join-ing hundreds of families and individuals of all ages dedicated to helping build strong kids, strong fami-lies and strong communi-ties. Volunteering for the YMCA is fun, rewarding and will give you a sense of belonging. You will make a positive impact on the lives of others.
Volunteers help in all areas of the Y, includ-ing board and commit-tee members, coaches
for youth sports, special events and the front desk. There are opportunities year-round for different events and programs.
Currently, we have opportunities to work at the front desk during busy hours — including lunch time, late afternoon and some weekends during special events and youth sports. Or you can assist the member services staff by passing out towels and locks, answering the phone and giving tours.
If you are a “people person” and are interested in making a difference, please call Cynthia Ratliff, membership director, at (252) 438-2144 or send an email to [email protected].

We have had a great time with volleyball here at the Henderson Family YMCA. The parents have enjoyed coming out and participating with their children as well.
The fundamentals of volleyball have been our concentration. There has been much improvement with both the girls and boys. We hope to continue building our volleyball program.
Currently, registration for boys and girls bas-ketball is open. The boys’ season starts Nov. 5 and the girls’ season is set to
begin Feb. 4, 2012.The Henderson Fam-
ily YMCA wants to better meet the needs of the community by provid-ing a variety of sports for youth that focus on basic fundamental skills. By emphasizing those skills,
it provides a solid founda-tion for children to build on.
If you have questions or would like more informa-tion about youth sports, contact Kim at the Hen-derson Family YMCA at (252) 438-2144.

The Henderson Family YMCA provides after school care for boys and girls ages pre-K through 8th grade. Currently the YMCA buses pick up campers from Pinkston Street, Aycock, Clark School, Carver, E.M. Rollins, E.O. Young and Zeb Vance elementary schools; Kerr-Vance Acad-emy, Vance Charter School, Crossroads Christian School, Eaton-Johnson and Henderson middle schools. Dabney Elementary buses campers to the YMCA.
As campers arrive they are provided a cubby for their book bags and per-sonal items. Each day we provide an afternoon snack, devotion, swimming, games and activities, optional homework time, some arts and crafts and a play-ground with swings, but most of all, a safe environ-ment instead of being home alone. We promote the YMCA’s character traits of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.
Our staff is carefully se-lected and trained in CPR, AED and first aid. We are proud to work towards a ratio of one counselor to six campers for the younger age group, one counselor to 10 for the middle age group and one counselor to 12 campers for the older age group. Your child’s safety
is our primary objective.Registration for the 2011-
2012 school year remains open, with space available. To be a participant in the Henderson Family YMCA After School Camp program, just come by the Y and reg-ister at the member services desk between 8 a.m.-6 p.m. There is a non-refundable $25 registration fee per child. The fees and payment schedule are as follows:• YMCA member — 1
child, $160 per month (due by the 1st of the month)
• Non-member — 1 child, $180 per month (due by the 1st of the month)This averages out to
$40 per week for members and $45 per week for non-members. The monthly fee includes teacher work-days, early dismissals and holiday breaks at no extra charge. Discounts are avail-able for additional children in the same family.
In an effort to include all children, the YMCA has a financial assistance program. This program uses a sliding fee scale for membership and childcare that is based on need.
For more information, call Kim at (252) 438-2144. Character counts and kids can make a difference in our world because they are our future leaders.

The public is encour-aged to please stop by to visit us during our Lights On Afterschool Event. For more information about the event, contact Julia Langston at [email protected]. For more

Afterschool programs keep kids safe, help work-ing families and inspire learning. According to data from the Afterschool Alliance, 15.1 million children are without adult supervision in the after-noon hours.
RALLY, FROM PAGE ONE
“Girls on the Run is so much fun!” — that’s the phrase you will hear 64 third- through eighth-grade girls saying this fall.
In 2010, Girls on the Run of Vance County started their first season with 10 girls and one site. GOTR Vance has now expanded to three elemen-tary school sites: Aycock, Zeb Vance and E.M. Rol-lins. There is also a site at the Henderson Family YMCA. Furthermore, we have kicked off our first Girls on Track session which is a continuation of Girls on the Run through eighth grade.
Girls on the Run is a positive youth development program which combines an interactive curriculum and running to inspire self-respect and healthy
lifestyles in pre-teen girls. Our core curriculum ad-dresses many aspects of girls’ development — their physical, emotional, men-tal and social well-being. Lessons provide girls with the tools to make positive decisions and to avoid risky adolescent behaviors.
The only requirement to participate in the program is that you must be a girl between third- and eighth-grade. GOTR Vance has been the recipient of grants and is also fortunate to have local sponsors which allows us to grant scholar-ships to girls who cannot afford the program fee.
The third season of GOTR and GOT are underway and we will be celebrating the end of our season with the second annual Gobble Gallop on
Nov. 19, 9 a.m., in down-town Henderson. We invite the community to attend as we acknowledge and celebrate the 64 girls who will be participating this season.
Even if you are not eligible to be a program participant, there are many ways for individu-als and the community to become involved. We have many volunteer opportu-nities, such as coaching, sponsorships and running buddies.
For more information on GOTR Vance, race day information, ways to participate or become involved please visit our website at www.gotrvance.org or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Girls-on-the-Run-of-Vance-County.
The Girls on Track participants strike their pose of confidence before they end their session. What a great way to spend Monday and Thursday afternoons.

no longer need to remem-ber their membership cards. We have installed a palm reader that will allow members to simply place their palm on a
device to gain entrance into the YMCA. The initial process just takes a few seconds and you will no longer need your membership card. We will however, continue to issue
cards should you need to use another YMCA facility when you are away. We are looking forward to this new process and hope that our members will appreci-ate the convenience.
As some of you may know, I had one of those milestone birth-days this past July. It was one of those birthdays that made me wonder how in the heck I made it to such a ripe old age. Then again, I’m darn glad I did!
Now, I have realized that being a bit more “mature” does make you more thankful for many things. I am certainly thankful for my family. I was blessed with wonderful parents, whom I miss greatly. I am also blessed with a wonderful wife, Kathy; two sons, Trey and Da-vid; a daughter-in-law (mostly daughter), Trey’s wife Brooke; and a 16-month-old grandson, Elijah.
As many of have you told me, being a grandparent is some-thing very special. Elijah — “Big E,” “The Bear,” “Big Guy,” “Bud-
dy,” or many other names we call him — has quickly become the center of attention. He is in control and, yes, he does walk on
water and is by far the cut-est grandchild ever born on this earth. He has truly spoiled me, and Grand-ma, rotten. I am truly blessed and proud of my family.
Now that I am a bit older and wiser (always remembering
you learn from your mistakes and I have surely had many
opportunities to learn), I realize I have many things for which to be thankful and proud. Being a resident of Henderson and Vance County now for almost 30 years, I am proud of this com-munity and this community has many things to be proud of.
As with all communities, we have some challenges but I feel our successes far out weigh them. Sadly at times, these chal-lenges seem to get all the atten-tion. This needs to change. We must speak “loudly and proudly” about our successes while “whis-pering softly” about, but working hard to correct, these challenges. We need to remember the old cliché: “is the glass half full or is the glass half empty?”
How do you feel about our community? Is our glass half full or half empty? Isn’t it all
about our attitude and how we approach all situations? I will bet you can find many things to be proud of living in Henderson and Vance County.
One thing I am very proud of is the Henderson Family YMCA. I am proud to be a part of a Christian-based organization that has the core values of — caring, respect, honesty, respon-sibility, faith — and the YMCA is proud to practice and promote those values. I am proud of the community for supporting this organization for over 32 years and supporting the current facil-ity for almost 22 years. Did you know there are few communities the size of Henderson and Vance County that offer a full service YMCA facility?
The YMCA is just one example of the many success
stories in our community. With the recent news of new business development and local growth, we are on our way to filling up our glass.
No one wants to get on a sinking ship. They want to sail with a winner — one whose sails are full of strong wind that moves the ship forward. Help this community. I encourage you to quietly help plug the leaks while loudly and proudly filling our glass to the rim. And please don’t forget, there are many more “Big Es,” like my grandson, who need something to be proud and a future to look forward to.
Just a few thoughts from a “new, old grandpa” who cares about the future of this great community we call home.
Happy fall to all!

Our SilverSneakers program offers an exciting approach to fit-ness by utilizing aerobics, water aerobics and other wellness activities geared towards our active older adults and those with various health concerns.
Our aerobics classes offer par-ticipants an opportunity to build their cardiovascular health; build and tone their muscles; and make a lot of friends along the way!
Our water aerobics class al-lows participants to take pressure off their joints while enjoying a workout in the pool at the same time.
The SilverSneakers program not only appeals to the health and fitness aspect of life, but it also stimulates one’s social life as well. During the year, there is a vast array of events scheduled on behalf of our active older adults simply for pleasure!
So, if this sounds like the fit-ness life you would enjoy, don’t
let me keep you waiting. Let me tell you just how simple it is to become a SilverSneakers® member.
Do you have Medicare and supplemental insurance (AARP, BCBS of N.C. and HUMANA, to name a few of the more familiar ones), and have seen the Silver-Sneakers® shoes logo information come in your mail? If you can answer “yes,” you are probably eligible for this free membership. Yes, free! If you answered “yes,” and are uncertain if you are eligible: not a problem. Simply come into our facility with your insurance card and our friendly Member Services staff can assist you in a matter of minutes. It’s just that simple.
In closing¸ I am including a list of the events planned for the closure of this year. We would en-joy the pleasure of your company as we gather for classes, events and to simply socialize until our hearts bubble over with joy. Just remember you are home when you are here.
A morning of bingo and homemade ice cream is just one of the many social events that our SilverSneakers Mem-bers enjoy participating in at the Y.

The relighting of the “Y” is going well. I hope everyone notices the brightness of the facility now. We still have a few places to work on but these lights are being made at this time. The remaining areas are the pool, the two-racquetball courts and the squash court. A few other places are waiting for finish products.
We thank you for all your patience and understanding. We feel that these improve-ments will help enhance the facility and go a long way toward saving on utility costs and preserving the environment. Again thanks for your patience and feel free to inquire.
