Golden Valley Požega basin is an area where the tame Slavonian plane deeply imploded

the hills. This is the place where picturesque corn fields merge with slopes

covered with vineyards and framed with deep mountain forests.

The Golden Valley, as the Romans called this area, is an area rich in

heritage and tradition, but also with a vivacious and eventful contemporary

life. It is a place where, on the three wine roads (and 30 wine cellars), wine

tales and legends are told and top-quality Slavonian wines are tasted.

If we complement this with untouched nature (Papuk Nature Park)

and the opulence of flavors of local gastronomy and domestic

products from numerous family farms, it is no wonder that this

area has become a rich and interesting tourist destination.

Golden Slavonia

Požega-Slavonia County shatters the usual misconception of flat Slavonia, because this relatively small area boasts plains with fertile fields, mountains and hills the foots of which are covered in renowned vineyards, as well as forests, green oases with rich flora and fauna, attractive excursion, fishing and hunting sites. With all the natural riches of this area, the county has a long history, a proof of which are numerous archeological sites and findings, and what is particularly interesting is that Požega valley was called VALLIS AUREA - the Golden Valley already in the Roman times. Going from west eastwards, you can visit LIPIK - the home of proud Lipizzaner horses and the spring of therapeutic thermal waters. Next is PAKRAC, renowned for the

medieval coin mint (moneta banalis-banovac); POŽEGA, which is nowadays the administrative and cultural center of the County; PLETERNICA, a well-known pilgrimage site of the Lady of Tears. Furthermore, there is KUTJEVO, one of the most prominent wine centers in Croatia with vineyard and wine-cellar tradition that spans from 1232; KAPTOL, which was the center of the Hallstatt culture during the late Iron Age; and VELIKA, a point of entry into Papuk Nature Park, which recently received the status of a European geo-park due to its geological versatility. In Čaglin area, in the heart of Dilj Mountain, is a well-known, and recently more and more visited, Sovsko Lake, the only remnant of the prehistoric Pannonian Sea.

Požega, the city of tradition that spans more than eight centuries, had become the seat of feudality early on and, during the medieval times, the city was the center of commercial, craft, administrative, military and church functions for the wider area. The first mention of Požega County dates back to 1210, and of the church parish back to 1232. However, the findings on the archaeological localities of Čemernica and Gradci, dating back to the 16th, i.e. 15th century BC., provide evidence of early cultures in this area (such as vessels of the Belegish culture or extraordinarily rich armor from 8th - 6th century BC).The main city square is the Trinity Square which appears monumental, surrounded by arches and Baroque houses on one side and the Church of the Holy Spirit and the diocese building on the other. The Church of the Holy Spirit, which dates back to the 13th century, is the most visited sacral building and is also the resting place of Friar Luka Ibrišimović, a famous citizen of Požega who liberated the city from the Turks. The Trinity Square was named after the votive statue, situated on the Plague Pillar, a monument to plague victims of the 1739 plague that ravaged Požega. The Plague Pillar was built by the Venetian, Gabriel Granicie, and at the time, the citizens of Požega participated in the erection of the surrounding Baroque houses. The stroll through the streets of Požega should definitely be complemented by a visit to the Požega Cathedral, decorated in Vienna Baroque style and dedicated to Saint Theresa of Avila, and Saint Lawrence Church with unique frescos dating back to the 13th century.Požega bases its offer on fine flavors, exquisite music and customs of the area. The city is well known for its wines, chocolate, superior gastronomic specialties and tamburica, a local instrument that invites the visitors to enjoy these hedonistic pleasures.

The rich historical and cultural heritage entices you to discover and get to know valuable landmarks and here, in a small area, you can visit churches, castles, chapels, archaeological sites and a number of other monuments. Your experience will be complemented by fine meals and top quality wines, so we recommend you to take a peek into the hotpot of Požega!

In Požega-Slavonia County cookery is considered a centuries-old art of existence, and since the entire Slavonia has a specific and very strong gastronomic identity, delicacies of the Museum in the pot and luxurious wine lists served as an excellent idea for creating thematic tours and are an excellent motivation to visit Požega.

Požega has always attracted many diplomats, traders, explorers, travelers and wanderers. In its long and remarkable history Požega was the capital of the Hungarian queens, administrative, ecclesiastical, economic and cultural center of Slavonia, center of the Ottoman Sanjak in Slavonia, and due to the high educational and cultural activities in the 19th century, it was called Slavonian Athens. Religious orders also gave a great contribution to this development - especially the Franciscans, Dominicans, Paulines and Jesuits. Religious monuments, together with distinctive medieval town center complete the charming baroque whole, making Požega one of the most beautiful cities in northern Croatia.

Today, this region is a favorite destination for visitors who want unobtrusive knowledge through sightseeing and to enjoy the re-discovered forgotten dishes of the Museum in the pot and the famous drop of wine, but also for everyone who wants to experience great AUREA FEST that hosts as many as 10 different festivals in seven days. It also attracts the nature lovers who enjoy active countryside holiday – here, everybody will surely find something for themselves.

Page 10: Way to Croatia

The old recipes of Požega-Slavonian cuisine nurture and feed already through their names: cracklings pate, asparagus moussaka, scones with cream and wine, wine soup, Požega boozers, Sulkovački šterc, Požega vineyard minced-meat fingers, Turkish pumpkin strudel, carrot marmalade, Kraljević family punch cake, Salaš cake with sour cherries. And each of these fragrant dishes reminds of the times gone by, a slower pace of life and entertaining tales of lives of people in the Golden Valley.

The Museum in a Pot project the Požega City Museum Department of Ethnology was created in an attempt to promote traditional dishes of Požega and Požega area at the turn of the 19th to 20th century. The traditional cuisine of Požega is a treasury of modest and simple, but also imaginative rural dishes, deeply ingrained with customs of life and annual works; and city dishes of Požega mixed in a pot of diverse nationalities of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy, which also shaped them. From historical accounts, unpublished manuscripts of memories, documents, everyday log of meals of the longest-living major of Požega, Franjo Ciraki, at the beginning of the 20th century,

to the still living storytellers and, of course, reconstruction volunteers, the team of The Museum in a Pot project has managed to trace many long-forgotten, interesting dishes of this area, such as vineyard minced-meat fingers, Požega boozer cakes, ritual pretzels, sugar beet honey, pickles sauce, trganci, drobac, radetzky rice, kipflkoch, ham pate, bazlamača, trijet….

The research has resulted in a detailed video and photo presentation of preparation of each of these dishes, published on a blog www.muzejuloncu.hr. Historically and ethnologically based stories, which take you back to days long gone by, different in habits, customs, fashion and historical circumstances, different from those today, are inseparably connected to each of the dishes. The project is also represented through an exhibition The food was so good back in the day which represents gastronomic particulars of Požega and Požega area, with interesting lectures, workshops, and tasting of village and city dishes, such as Požega minced-meat fingers, wine soup… You can taste the exquisite dishes of Požega area in restaurants and family farms. Gastronomic souvenirs such as Požega boozers (a cake for family and neighborly socialization with wine), bead honey (rural ingenuity born from poverty) or carrot marmalade (which is prepared at Household School run by the Sisters of Mercy of the Saint Vinko Monastery) are particularly attractive.

Victory over the Ottomans under the leadership of Friar Luka Ibrišimović Sokol (the Hawk) is traditionally celebrated on Saint Gregory’s day in Požega. The manifestation itself, called Grgurevo, was declared a cultural, non-material heritage of the Republic of Croatia.

By firing from cannons and mortars on March the 12th, Saint Gregory’s day, grateful citizens of Požega remember and celebrate their hero - Friar Luka Ibrišimović Sokol. During the Great Anti-Turkish war after the siege of Vienna, the Turkish army had occupied the hills around this lovely Slavonian city. Trying to avoid a long-term and precarious siege, friar Luka came to a conclusion that there is no point in sitting idle-handed and that the Turks should be attacked. Under the cover of darkness and fog, in the early morning of the Saint Gregory’s day, the friar and a troop of brave citizens of Požega sneaked to the Sokolovac Hill, where the enemy had made their camp. A fierce battle commenced with scimitars clashing all over the place and with Požega troop firing from small, non-lethal mortars (cast pipes of small diameters), creating such a noise that the Turks retreated falsely believing that their enemy is far more numerous than was the case. They ran for their lives from Požega, and the brave friar was nicknamed Sokol (the Hawk) by the emperor Leopold I.Nowadays, the citizens of Požega celebrate Grgurevo, the city of Požega day, in a very unique manner: wine-growers make their own mortars and cannons in their vineyards and name them, usually Grgur, Grga, Luka or Sokol. Of course, the wine-growers compete in size, beauty and loudness of the mortar. The celebration always includes families and friends and the primary hallmark of this celebration is a good and joyful song appropriate for the occasion and, of course, over-indulging in foods and drinks. The food was once carried in backpacks and was supposed to extinguish the hunger until Požega vineyard minced-meat fingers, a specialty of the Museum in a Pot, were being prepared. The same applies today. Wine-growers host their friends, guest who come there for the occasion and other guests on the Požega Hill, greeting them with good song, loud shots, Slavonian gastro specialties and of course top of the notch wines. Come to Grgurevo because this is where the pleasantries are at their best!

PLETERNICA Road of roses and wineMagical blend of culture, oenology and natural beauties being woven into one story with the greatest experiences and pleasures – this is what you can expect when visiting the Road of roses and wine.

It begins in the centre of Pleternica, and its entire length of 3,5 km leads you through a breathtaking vineyard landscape with plenty of rich grape vines producing the finest drops of wine such as Graševina, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.Beautiful roses of all colors peep among the juiciest grapes. This mixture is of a priceless significance for winemakers. Namely, roses are indicators of diseases which threaten the grape vine. On the very top of this road on the hill Starac, which is at an altitude of 347 m, there is a small chapel of St. Peter, a place of prayer and peace, with a magnificent view of plains and forests of Pleternica. The best time for visiting the Road of roses and wine Spring - when the vine grows its shoots, summer - when the roses are in their most luxurious bloom, autumn - when the grapes look like golden ducats or winter - when the white blanket of snow gives a special charm to the hills of Pleternica.

How to visit the Road of roses and wineYou can walk there, cycle, travel by car, bus or a special bus called Brzi Vinko, and carriages by prior arrangement. Here you can taste the exquisite wines of Markota Winery, refresh yourself, relax, have lunch or simply enjoy in the endless landscape.

Shrine of Our Lady of Tears In the very heart of Pleternica, there is a Shrine of Our Lady of Tears, proudly exalted and uplifted, reaching for the stars in the sky. It is a miraculous place of gathering, prayer, peace and quiet… The history of the Shrine of Our Lady of Tears reaches all the way back to the year 1955 when believers started gathering again on the foundations of destroyed parish church of St. Nicholas in honor of a miraculous event, when the relief of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, made of plaster, cried human tears in 1953 in Syracuse, Sicily. Year after year, a growing number of believers began to arrive to Pleternica, and the Archbishop of Syracuse brought a blessed painting of Our Lady of Tears as a gift to the Pleternica parish in 1958, together with the cotton wool which touched the miraculous relief. On the 31st of August, 2005, Pleternica was declared the diocesan and the Croatian Marian shrine.

PAKRAC Janković nobles’ complexJanković nobles’ complex is a name for several buildings built in the first half of the 18th century, located in the center of Pakrac. It consists of two brick storey- houses – Janković curia and Janković small palace. There are two small commercial buildings next to them. It is the integrity of the complex that gives the greatest value to it. In fact, there were no significant commercial objects standing next to the castle for housing preserved in Slavonia at that time. Today, this complex is protected as a cultural and historical entity of great importance and is protected by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia. Baroque style Janković curia from the 18th century was used for housing the nobleman and his family.

Janković nobles’ complex

From the works of travel writers, we know that the curia was the place of an active social life, especially in the first half of the 19th century when the selected company enjoyed the concerts, theater shows, and reading the recent European magazines. The Elementary music school of Pakrac is located in the curia today. Due to the specific deck, the small palace is also called the ‘’Chinese pavilion’’. Nowadays, this storey house having baroque stylistic features is the Museum of Pakrac. The two former farm buildings are now the City Hall and the House of Croatian defenders.

The Museum of PakracThe Museum of Pakrac is situated in Janković small palace. There are several historical collections: cultural and historical, ethnographic, collection of postcards, numismatic collection and school collection. Cultural and historical collection keeps a very interesting exhibit - matrix for the engraving from the early 19th century, used for printing trade licenses for the local craftsmen and with the oldest pictorial representation of the city carved in. Numerous old photographs, postcards and valuable items in the school museum collection make this institution extremely significant and unavoidable in the research and presentation of the history in this area. The Museum of Pakrac pays special attention to educational activities and organizes various workshops for young people through which it gives them the opportunity to get to know the heritage that surrounds them in a different way.Slavonic banal coin - Croatian first coin minted in Pakrac, most probably in the period from 1235 to 1384, is one of the oldest in Croatia and gives a special value to the Museum’s numismatic collection. Slavonic banal coin was medieval Slavonic money. Since it was of a good quality, this money was also used in neighboring countries: Hungary, Slovenia, Romania and Bosnia. Slavonic banal is one of the most beautiful Croatian and European coins.

Camping site OmanovacThe Omanovac camping site with hiking lodge is at the 15 minutes driving distance from the center of Pakrac. Due to its location and open scenery facing Slavonia and Moslavina it is one of the most attractive lodges in Croatia. It can accommodate up to 50 guests and provides technically equipped interior for smaller conferences and educative workshops. The cuisine offers traditional homemade dishes, ecologically grown fruit and vegetables and rich wine selection. The camping site entails sporting grounds for playing football, volleyball, badminton and basketball complete with the children’s playground for the youngest visitors. It has 150 km of marked and maintained walking trails stretching through the countryside dotted with woods and ponds, not to forget about 100 km of cycling trails for recreational cycling, including trails for mountain biking. In winter, a sledding area runs next to the lodge and an available 500 meter long skiing trail “Ivica Kostelić” at about 50 meter distance.

A day or a weekend in the Papuk nature park is an outdoor experience for everyone in search of exploring, walking, cycling, fun, or simply to admire nature. The nature park has various activities to offer for each season. A visit to the park starts from the visitor area in Velika, where you can receive all necessary information about the park and observe natural historic collection.

We recommend a walk down the informative trail Lapjak with information stands recording Papuks peculiarities, from where the Pliš hill with the paragliding take-off is accessible. It is open to all adrenaline seekers who wish to glide through the air to bottom of the hill. The Sokoline spot offers a climbing hill. During summer months swimming and bathing is reachable at the Velika outdoor pools and the Orahovica lake. The perfect way of recreation and exploring the Papuk hill would be cycling on the various woodland trails passing through the most beautiful areas of Papuk. As of now, six cycling trails with the combining length of 105 km are accessible in the park. In spring you can walk down the Turjak botanical trail, where you can spot lovely early spring flowers such as primroses, small Pasque flowers, fritillaries and others. If travelling to Kutjevo, be sure to visit the St. Nicholas monastery and make a stop at the Petrov vrh lookout point. In Kutjevo you can visit the famous 13th century wine cellar and walk down the informative trail through the oak forest and vineyards up to Vinkomir lookout point. The northwest area of the park, near Voćin, contains two shorter informative trails. The first one offers information on the “sleeping Rupnica volcano” a phenomenon of Rupnica rocks, noting volcanic pillars and volcanoes of the world. The second trail in the vicinity of Djedovice is leading through the natural birch and pine woodland to the Old Oaks protected area.

The Papuk Nature Park Public Institution offers professional organised group guidance to discover nature and historic legacies of Papuk, including school guided programmes.

A visit to the Požega region is an extraordinary experience of the senses, whether it is of scenting flowery meadows, of hearing a bird song and murmuring spring well, or of tasting natural spring water. Have an unforgettable journey down the woodland paths and village roads discovering fields, vineyards and fruit farms. You can fully appreciate the astounding beauty of the countryside with its small villages and ancient chapels and castles.

KAPTOL The medieval city of Kaptol

It is hard to pinpoint when this sacral object was built, being devastated and rebuilt throughout the history. The fortress of Kaptol is a hexangular late-gothic early-renaissance fort with circular halftowers and rectangular entrance tower. The fortress used to entail a water canal.

The fort residues are undoubtedly the only visible part of the past Church institution, the St Peter’s Order. It was the center of the Pecs diocese in the early 13th century until Osmanlian wars. The fortress was besieged by the Turks and lastly inhabited by the Turkish conqueror Dizdar aga. After Osmanlian wars, it had changed 15 owners but despite many attempts its former function was never restored. Today, this magnificent ruin is owned by the Požega diocese which systematically conducts conservatory preservance and restoration tasks.

The famous historic visitors of these grounds include the valiant baron Trenk and the Austrian empress Maria Theresia. The castle that was built on the former monastery, is a part of a former Jesuit complex that entailed monastery church, residence (later castle), farm buildings and gardens. During the centuries its numerous owners changed its appearance, until the nineties restoration works restored its original charm. The tour of the castle and the Old Wine Cellar with wine sampling is organised for both individual visitors and for groups up to 200 people with the option of organising special arrangements. The Kutjevo Vincelovo wine manifestation is a traditional and well visited manifestation to signify the start of wine production (January). At the town square a huge party is held accompanied by Tamburitza music, and sampling of Kutjevo Graševina white wine and Slavonian sausages.

The Slavonian way programme offers a genuine experience of East Croatian wine and dine selection. The geographical location of the vineyards, the rich soil, the microclimate conditions and the centuries old tradition of wine making present its heritage through three vineyards, each unique and representative in its own way.

The Požega-Pleternica, Kutjevo and Pakrac vineyards are through the Slavonian way programme connected with more than 30 wine cellars.
