Happy Painting! Our alphabet journey takes us to the letter “Q” for this month. Q stands for the working word quiet. It is said that some of the greatest ideas float to the surface of the mind during periods of quiet. Quiet is needed to reset our compass or to make certain that we are traveling in the direction that we originally intended. Sometimes modification and evaluation are needed to get us on the new course. It is documented that my main man, Leonardo Da Vinci, would have a rest or quiet period after an accomplishment. Another famous quote that incorporates the thought of being quiet is the idea that it is in the silence that gives music its life and rhythm. Applying this statement to a painting, the idea would be that the negative space is what gives intrigue to the artwork; inferring that sometimes, what isn’t said is more important. Being quiet takes work and effort. Taking all of this into consideration, when was the last time you were “quiet, really quiet?”. Donna O.

“I'm back from vacation, and the WWG library is open and ready for customers. I sold a lot of paper at the Sunday, Kris Parins demo; but, I have plenty of Arches 300 lb. and 140 lb., as well as 140 lb. Fabriano paper for sale. Lots of wonderful watercolor books are available for the use of our members. Call me at 512/345-1536 to let me know if you plan to stop by.

My newsletter nugget for November: "Paintings fail or succeed because of how accurate the values are in the work, rather than because of poor choices of color. The viewer reads a painting through values.”

Our LOAC/Bass show is fast approaching. Jpegs are due December 10. Save $5 by entering early. See prospectus for all the details and contact me or Dianne Holley if you have any questions. This is our first traveling show and it will be on display in Columbus, Texas at the Live Oak Art Center for six weeks followed by an exhibit at the Bass for another eight. This will be the largest viewing audience that WWG has this year, maybe ever, so don't miss out.

We received notice that the Julia C

Butridge Gallery at the Daughtery Center in Austin will not announce the schedule for next year until mid-November.

Mark your 2014 calendar for our February/March exhibit at the Austin Library Branch store “Recycle Reads” at 5335 Burnet Road. Exact dates will be announced ASAP. This will be a stress-free opportunity for you to exhibit your painting/s in a lovely display area located in central Austin. At the same time, (1) you will be helping Austin Library celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the book resale store, (2) we will be getting exposure for our Waterloo Watercolor Group, and (3) you will be sharing your creative artwork. The rules for the exhibit are few. So choose one or two of your paintings and plan to have them ready for our show. We will have space for about 30 paintings, so if you want to make sure that you are included or if you have questions, send an email to Gayle Allen at: [email protected]. Plexiglass is required. This venue is connected to the Austin Public Library and could possibly be a first step to an invitation to the future downtown library.

The Members' Spring Show will be in May, but the jpegs will be due early March. Final judging by Thomas Schaller will be March 30th at Apache Shores. Marsha Reeves and I are co-chairs for this show and are working on the prospectus.

Our Inspiration Gallery Exhibit at Riverbend Church will run the entire summer.. Anyone interested in helping with this small, but beautiful venue, contact me.

And, last but certainly, not least....The Old Bakery and Emporium will exhibit our entire "Love of Books" show at their beautiful gallery, right across from the Capitol, October 2014 during the Texas Book Festival. Thanks to Donna Annacone and Shirley Slaughter for heading this up. We are planning some special activities for the weekend of the festival, so stay tuned. Several paintings have been sold from the original show in Georgetown, and those can be replaced for the new "Book" show.

WWG Web Information – Nancy

Charbeneau

First of all, in case you haven’t noticed, the formatting requirements for putting your painting photos on the web in the Members’ Gallery and Members’ Website Links pages have changed. All you have to do is send me your photo that is: cropped, borderless, in jpg, gif or png format, and more than 500 KB and less than 2 MB in size. Your photo should be labeled with your last name, a dot or dash, then the name of your painting. So, if you haven’t already, do sign up to have your paintings shown in our website’s members’ gallery and have a website link with a painting photo. You can do this when you sign up for membership next year.

During the last several months, I have been working on optimizing our search engine by describing our group and what we do (it’s what you see if our website comes up on a search) and entering key words that describe our group, so folks can find us. I think it is working in that I’m getting a lot more ‘Contact Us’ inquiries, especially for our workshops.

We have also found out through others looking at our website that if you are looking at it on an I-pad, you have to click on each menu item twice (the list on the left, such as membership) to get to the page with all the main information! On the I-phone, when you click on a menu item, it will list the main page along with the other imbedded pages so you still have to click the menu item twice. This also may be a problem for our mac users. I will work with the host site to see if there is a

way around this issue, because it is causing frustration to visitors looking for information. The fallback solution is to put a note on the home page about this.

A fun change we will be making in the next few months is to change our home page banner (the painting-like image under our title and on top of the main body of text) every few months. We will be using slices of some of our board member’s paintings! First up will be Kathy Summers and she will receive credit for her ‘banner’ on our home page.

I do have two questions for you. The first one is about the Members’ Gallery. Currently, folks who sign up can get up to 6 painting photos (with information on price, size etc.) for $20/year. Right now there are only 3 places for painting photos per person, and I am finding that no one is changing out their paintings mid-year. So my question is: what would you think of having all 6 paintings at once shown for the $20? Or maybe we could have 4 or 5 shown in a row. They have changed the way the painting information is shown, so the painting description is shown right under the painting picture and not when you click on the painting. I can’t change this, so if we do 4 – 6 in a row, the painting pictures will be smaller along with the information under the paintings. That is no problem if you are viewing on a smart phone and can enlarge the views easily. However, if I do 2 rows of 3 and keep everything as large as it is now, the page would be very long, and folks at the bottom would be less likely to be found! We could also leave it as is. What do you think?

The second question is: If we had Pay-Pal on our website, would you use it? You could pay for membership, shows and workshops with it. However, we may have to increase our prices slightly, as Pay-Pal does charge a percentage of each transaction. We may be able to get a break on the percent fee because we are a non-profit. The question I would like to know is: If we got it, would you REALLY use it? Thanks, and I’m always open to new ideas for improving WWG’s website.—Nancy Charbeneau

November, 2013

My name is Pat Molina, short for Patricia Pearce Molina y Vedia. I’ve always been an artist and proudly stated so in second grade. That revelation resulted in an occasional weekend of painting but it left me with a lifelong desire to be a working artist. In 2011, I had the chance and took it; I retired from

state government

after 20 years of helping adult adoptees locate

biological families. It was a lovely career that took me, at

least by phone, to the far reaches of the earth as I talked with the most amazing adoptees. I loved listening to all their unique stories; some delightful, some heartbreaking, and some telling it for the first time, to me, a public servant listening on the other end of the line halfway around the world. It was a wonderful experience. I became enamored with adoptive parents who are incredible mentors, adoptees who are successful, well-educated and mild-mannered citizens and birth mothers (and fathers) who left me with a much bigger heart than when I started in 1991. So, in 2011, sitting in my flat wondering what I am going to do, I decided to reinvent myself as a professional artist. I started out drawing in pencil and charcoal, then pastel. I can’t say I was that successful in pastel, except for the drawing aspect of it. Classes or workshops would have helped, but I found that some of the chalks would crack the pads of my fingers so deeply and painfully; especially dark Prussian blue, that I called it quits, at least full time. Then it was oils, but I quickly realized the toxicity of the fumes might make me sick, especially since my studio is an integral part of my living space. Acrylic may have similar issues…so here I am, painting in watercolor. It isn’t entirely new for me. I have dabbled in it for years. But, only dabbled.

But, it is a struggle. Struggle because all watercolor paint is not the same. The more I work in the medium, the more I am astounded by how difficult it is...Struggle because I must be patient. I like to paint wet-in-wet; but, when I want to texture or add color to existing wet paint, I sometimes wait forever for the gloss to stop. Struggle because of the humility I continue to experience in watercolor as I accept the mistakes and try to create from them. Struggle because painting full time is very different from painting occasionally. I am currently struggling on a series of sunflowers that I plan to show at the UP Collective during November 2013 for the 12th Annual E.A.S.T. Austin studio tour. http://eastaustinstudiotour.com/ (11/16-17 and 11/23-24). Painting sunflowers has been so challenging that one night I decided to start throwing paint on the paper. Same colors, just a different look. I like it. Hopefully, you will too when you come visit during EAST. Please stop by and say hello. I will be on the first floor at the UP Collective (2326 E Cesar Chavez St., Austin, TX 78702) during the third and fourth weekend of November before Thanksgiving. A parking lot can be found on 2nd Street behind the pink building. That’s about it. Other than this, I have several other lives and passions. I look forward to learning more about you this year and in 2014 when my duties expand to Membership Chair. This is my second year with WWG, and I’m diving in. ArtByPatMolina.com

Workshops Michele Missner, Tina

Broderick and Chuck Wallace

You may not know this, but the workshops are co-chaired by three people, and each has a distinct position. If you have suggestions for workshops, those be sent to any of us. The three co-chairs look at suggestions and decide whom to invite. Chuck Wallace : ([email protected]) Chuck contacts the artists and finds out when they are available. He checks the calendar for any holidays or other conflicts, sets the budget

and sends out the contracts.

Tina Broderick: ([email protected]) Tina is in charge of registration. People who want to attend the workshops send their checks to her. She keeps the participants list up to date, adding relevant information to the list. She sends the checks to the treasurer, Shevawn Eisman. Contact Tina about any registration questions. Michele Missner: (mmmmissner@ gmail.com) Michele is in charge of making sure that the artists’ needs for the workshop are taken care of, making sure that the artist has lunches and dinners, and that the day-to day running of the workshop goes smoothly. We are now taking names for the wait list for the Thomas Schaller workshop, and Gerald Brommer's workshop is almost filled. Contact Tina if you wish to be added to the any of the workshop lists: [email protected]

KRIS PARIN’S WORKSHOP Thank you to everyone who participated and brought snacks, meals for Kris, cleaned up, and helped with whatever needed to be done. I think that we would agree that it was a very good workshop. Kris is a patient teacher who had informative demonstrations, ideas about how to proceed with paintings, and a gentle critique. We had artists from Arkansas, Corpus Christie, New Mexico, and Montana. Our website is attracting people from all over.

COMMENTS FROM PARTICIPANTS “Kris Parins’ workshop was great, a little crowded with her pouring watercolor technique with all of the large amount of equipment that we used. But she covered every aspect in a very organized and friendly manner. She was humble and encouraging in her approach. I got a lot from this workshop and recommend it to all watercolorists. I usually paint in the traditional way but this workshop has opened up new directions and a new awakening this technique has done for me. I certainly appreciate WWG for making this workshop possible. Hats-off to the coordinators as well.” Rene Wojcik

“Thank you for the wonderful workshop My mind just keeps rolling through the week’s events. Driving back to New Mexico, I had a good chance to think about the painting process, about Kris, and about all of you guys. What a great bunch of people. I guess that it helps that we were all of same wavelength.” Patrick Burns

“Kris was a wonderful teacher and the group

was a hard-working but jolly group.” Nancy Charbeneau

“WWG members who were at the demonstration the Sunday before the workshop, saw Kris do a pour for a new painting. Her method is quite complex and requires planning ahead, and knowing where your lights, mediums, and darks are. She works mostly in this method from her own photos, doing sketches, and using photoshop filters like the cut out to help plan her paintings, most of which are full sheets or larger. She favors pouring because she believes that it brings out the best of the watercolor medium, and her paintings do glow. Pouring allows the color to mix on the paper. She says that brushes crush the paper. Kris picks a yellow, red and blue that she believes will work best with the painting at hand. She makes a little color wheel with the colors blending into each other to see all of the colors the three paints make. She particularly

likes Quin gold, permanent alizarin crimson, and Antwerp blue. Colors are mostly poured in this order: yellow, red, and then blue. Paper is stretched and attached to a board with staples and tape.

Color Wheel with chosen colors She asked us to use references with large shapes. She is interested in value mostly. Start with light color values. She often uses her computer or a copy shop to print copies of the photo close to the size of the painting. She works with graphite paper and tracing paper. The drawing is done on tracing paper and she masks out the shapes for the first pour. Lines are drawn to match the tracing paper with the watercolor paper as she traces the shapes on to the watercolor paper. With each pour another layer is masked out, like a reduction wood cut. The paper is wet in preparing for the pour. She uses a hake brush to smooth out the water. Tube paint is diluted to the consistency of whole milk in little containers. She spatters, uses salt and anything else for texture at this stage, and so on. She basically does three pours or more. It was a busy and intense 4 days of learning and painting.“ Michele Missner

Kris Parins demonstrates pouring.

A thank you note from Kris Parins:

“Dear Michele, Wow, WWG really knows how to through a workshop! This was the bet organized, well thought out workshop that I have ever participated in. You set a high bar for the rest. (Thank you to Martha Ruth and Nancy Charbeneau for paving the way. To co-chairs Chuck Wallace who contacts artists, sends contracts and set the budgets; and to Tina Broderick who takes registration, keeps the list, and keeps track of the money.) As an instructor, I really felt pampered. The lunches are such an appreciated touch, and the club's generosity with expenses is quite

wonderful. In addition, the participants were so attentive and hardworking that I felt we had a real connection.

Thank you also for the gift of the books, which I will enjoy and share. I have many happy memories of my trip to Austin. Sincerely, Kris Parins”

To reserve a spot for most workshops, mail a $50 deposit check made out to "WWG" to Tina Broderick, 18112 Angel Valley, Leander, TX 78641. Please note on your check which workshop you want to attend. Also, please include your email address if you are not a WWG member. If you have a question about whether a workshop is full or not, please contact Tina. You can also pay the full

amount at this time too. Michele and Tina

Thomas Schaller: March 31-April 3, 2014 ThomasSchaller.com

Thomas Schaller’s workshop is filling up fast. It is $275for members, $325 for non-members. The workshop he will be doing for us is called the Architecture of Light, and here is a bit of information from his website.

“My workshops have become a real joy for me to conduct, and I think for painters - of all levels - to attend! Of course, we study lots of specific techniques for painting in watercolor. But the real emphasis is in helping painters to discover new ways of seeing the world around us, and how to find compelling subject matter and striking compositions almost anywhere. And primarily, we study the nature of light. I emphasize the goal of not painting the object or the scene before us as much as painting the light that defines it and gives it life. The practice is an exciting one and a technique that can help turn an ordinary painting into an extraordinary work of art. Gerald Brommer, October 6-9 ,2014 www.newmastergallery.com/artistsb/bommer.htm

World famous artist Gerald Brommer will be coming to Austin to do a workshop for WWG. The workshop will be STAINED

Bookworms - Eileen Pestorius

The group met recently to discuss young Claude Monet and the romance and

struggle with his first wife, Camille, and to decide what to read during 2014. On Feb. 8, we will discuss a lengthy but well-received book, Van Gogh: A Life by a Pulitzer-winning pair, Naifeh and Smith. (They won for a bio of Jackson Pollock.) Our next boo0k draws on new information in cooperation with Amsterdam’s Van Gogh museum, newly opened after restoration, which I recently revisited.

Our second book will be not directly about a painter, but a fictional reference to Gaugin, The Moon and Sixpence, by W. Somerset Maugham. It follows the life of a man seized by a midlife determination to become an artist, despite the cost. (Artist emerging, or male mid-life crisis?) the masterful writing is often cited for this novel,

set in London, Paris, and Tahiti. We will meet May 10.

All meetings are 9:30 on a Saturday morning at Eileen’s, and all members are invited for lively discussion. Get books at the library or buy them new or used on Amazon. Often they are very cheap; you pay mostly for postage. We have enjoyed learning about art and artists.

A book that I am finishing is Chuck Close: Life, by Finch. I love Close’s work, admire his triumph over incredible physical challenges, and await even more creativity from this driven man. He’s near my age, and I was blown away in our National Gallery in DC by his painting of Clinton, ten feet tall and c lose up, all bright neon squiggles, but from afar, a stunning ten foot tall portrait head. Chuck calls them heads, not portraits, and paints from a wheelchair. His heads have been of ink, pastel, fingerprints, mezzotints, photography, and many other mediums. One recently was shown at the Blanton. The Bookworms didn’t want to take on this book, but if you hanker after a look at a thriving New York art scene from the 60’s on, read this masterful biography of one of America’s premier artists known and admired worldwide.

--Happy reading, Eileen Pestorius

Artist Opportunities

Here is a submission Nancy Charbeneau received via the ‘Contact Us’ form on WWG’s webpage:

Villa Antonia extends an invitation to artists to join us November 15 and 16 for the love of ART. Visit our website at www.villaantonia.com for more details or email questions to [email protected].

Here’s a comment from Martha Ruth: “In 2007 WWG held a Paint Out at this lovely wedding and events location off 1431 north of Lake Travis. The original owner and former WWG member Toni Sharp (now deceased) purchased the painting I did of the chapel that

day, and I am honored to have the family and Villa Antonia use my painting to promote their first annual art show and poster contest. Please check out this web site and consider

participating in the show and contest!

Helen Green just visited Recycle Reads at 5335 Burnet Rd. WWG has been invited to put a show together for their 5th year celebration next February through March 2014. Anyone who would like to participate should contact Gayle Allen [email protected] to get on the list. We need artist, title, medium and size. More details will be available in the coming months. Stop by if you are in the area Thursday noon to 8pm and Friday through Sunday, noon to 6. It is a lovely space and the paintings on display currently are very interesting...lots of circus and carnival themes.

The UP Collective on East Cesar Chavez, in Austin has a juried art show coming up in February 2014. It's based on the exploration of

the nude model. The juror is Clint Willour, Curator, Galveston Arts Center. I hope that you will enter it and pass the word around. Cost is $20. No need to join the collective. Deadline is 11/30. Artists and Their Work

Betty Jameson won Third Place at the 66th Annual River Art Group Show and Sale La Villita, San Antonio, Texas October 5, 2013.

She also has two paintings in an exhibit at the Schreiner’s Hospital Gallery in Kerrville until November 14.

Eileen Pestorius and Beryl Kerwick are hanging with the Plein Air Austin group in the Corridor of Art. If you are in the downtown area, please stop by to see theirs and others who did all the work outdoors. Many mediums are represented,

From Vicki Goodrich: “Attached is a picture of me at Elgin's Pearls Before Swine Art Show opening this past Thursday evening. I had 4 paintings accepted into the show and Palmetto Sky - on yupo - won a Judges Merit Award! And I sold my pastel painting, Crackin' Eggs, at the show and had the painting that I donated to the Silent Auction successfully bid on and sold as well. So it was a success for me personally as well as being a wonderful distraction from health issues at hand. Also from WWG and paintings in the show – Vicki

Brevell, Darcy Schneider, Shirley Slaughter - but I don't know what their awards were. Pearls Before Swine is the annual art show in Elgin, sponsored by the Elgin Arts Association, and occurs just before Elgin's Hog Eye Fest; thus we have Pearls of Art Before Swine! EAA also sponsors Pearls of Youth, in the spring of the year for K-HighSchool aged youth and in addition to art supply prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each age category, EAA awarded 2 - $1000 scholarships to Elgin area high school seniors who will be continuing their education in the arts. Proceeds from the adult Pearls Before Swine show fund the scholarships.”

May you and your loved ones have a wonderful Thanksgiving. --Courtney and Marsha

Waterloo's first traveling exhibit

For the last several years, our exhibition at the Bass has received very positive feedback from the staff and from viewers, and we are thrilled to have been invited to mount another exhibition for 2014. Large formats and a cohesive body of work have contributed to the success of this show, and the following prospectus reflects our established pattern. After viewing our 2013 exhibition, the director of the Live Oak Art Center (LOAC) in Columbus, Texas, has extended an invitation to host the 2014 exhibit preceding the show at the Bass, hanging in both locations for six weeks each.

The entry fee of $35 is for both venues. A $5 discount is available for early submission. The committee will accept packed paintings at a central location, transport work to and from Columbus, store paintings in the interim, hang the Bass, and store packing materials to reuse at the strike, return packed paintings to the same central location for pickup - all for no handling or transportation fees.

Neither venue charges WWG for the privilege of exhibiting, but the LOAC requests a tax deductible donation of 30% of sales from checks collected by them, and WWG requests the same amount from sales generated at the Bass, which will be handled by the individual artists. Any work sold at LOAC should be replaced by a similar work for the Bass exhibit. Work previously shown at the Bass with any group is not allowed, but work from other WWG shows, such as one of our annual exhibits, may be submitted. All work should be for sale.

Artists are encouraged to enter up to 4 paintings by jpeg. Our juror is, once again, Linda S. Wells. The number of accepted paintings from each artist will depend on the total number of entries. For artists who enter this show, you may also submit up to four unframed, matted, labeled, priced and sealed works to be made available for purchase in a painting rack. There is no minimum size for matted only work.

Due to transportation and storage, work should be framed in a simple metal or wood frame with Plexiglas glazing, as weight is a factor. All work should be matted. Our calendar provides adequate time for framing after notification of accepted work. A simple standard, reusable packing system is necessary and instructions will be included with your acceptance letter.

We hope every member seriously considers entering this show and supporting the exhibition committee's commitment to securing new and larger venues. Anyone who has ever entered a show outside of WWG's own exhibits can appreciate what an opportunity and privilege this is.

Sincerely,

Dianne Holley and Helen Green

Co-Chairs for the LOAC/Bass Exhibits
