THE WANDERERS SECURED A ‘hang tough’ win on the road last weekend but there isn’t time to rest as the focus

turns to the annual frenzy of the Christmas/New Year season for the A-League.

Between December 23 and New Year’s Day the Wanderers will have suited up an incredible three times.

Every year the A-League makes the most of the holiday season by scheduling games almost every day from December 20 until January 1.

This scheduling quirk means nine points are up for grabs in little over a week.

The good news for the Wanderers is, believe it or not, they have one of the more manageable draws over the crazy season – their matches are relatively evenly spaced and two of them are at home. That should help the team settle.

While we are talking about professionals it’s only natural at this time of year for focus to be divided between family, training,

buying presents, playing games and staying focused on the A-League prize.

The Wanderers have the luxury of juggling those demands from home for the most part rather than being on the road with wandering minds.

First cab off the rank for the Wanderers is the Central Coast Mariners visiting Pirtek Stadium on December 23.

That match looks fairly simple for those who saw last week’s action. The Mariners are coming off a 4-0 fl ogging at the hands

of lowly Adelaide United. But the Mariners are the defending champions. Their form has been a little suspect in recent weeks, but with names like Daniel McBride, Mitchell Duke, Michael McGlinchey and Marcos Flores in the side that won’t last forever.

The Wanderers have to hope that form isn’t reversed before this week.

One of the key features of the game will be tempo. The Mariners have often sought to slow the game down and rely on their

shorter passing to open up teams in the middle of the pitch and the fi nal third.

They haven’t scored a rash of goals but McBride and Duke don’t require many opportunities to make the opposition pay, this has led to a number of low scoring wins or draws this year.

Ideally, the Wanderers like the game to move at a quicker speed, with longer passes and more running because they are at their best on the counter attack, as the goal against Newcastle proved.

The ball was moved swiftly to a fl ank and fl icked in early by Ono before a headed pass saw Bridge open on the post to nod the ball home. It was all over in the blink of an eye.

Because of those traits this game may well be decided by which team can force its will on the match.

The Wanderers will need their screening midfi elders – Aaron Mooy and Mateo Poljak – to be at their busy, disruptive best to put the Mariners off their tempo for a second

straight week. That should free the likes of Shinji Ono – who always fi nds ways to aff ect a game, regardless of the tight marking he receives – Youssouf Hersi and Labinot Haliti to break quickly and terrorise the Mariners’ exposed back line.

Once the Wanderers have negotiated that tougher-than-it-sounds Mariners match they need to be ready to go again, twice in quick succession.

The other summer holiday matches include a trip to Melbourne Victory on

December 28 and then back home for Wellington Phoenix on New Year’s Day.

Tony Popovic will be telling his troops that this is a great opportunity to quickly take nine competition points.

All of these matches are winnable and two wins with a draw should be the minimum expected outcome.

Strap yourselves in because it’s going to be a big couple of weeks in the A-League.

WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS STRIKER Mark Bridge can’t quite understand why people think the

second-placed side are in a form slump.The Wanderers have only recorded one

victory over the past month, last week against Newcastle, but haven’t looked the same team they were earlier in the season.

Speaking to the media at Tuesday morning’s training session, Bridge said the

side were full of confi dence despite their recent record.

“I know there’s been a lot written about our ‘form slump’ and our drought but nothing’s changed for us,” he said.

“We’re coming off two draws – one against a Melbourne Heart team that was lucky to get points against us and another one was a tough road trip to Wellington.

“Of course everyone loves winning but it’s

not as if we’ve been in deep depression the last two weeks.”

This Monday the Wanderers return to Pirtek Stadium to take on last year’s grand fi nal opponents and A-League champions, Central Coast.

Looking at the A-League ladder and recent results, you could argue the Mariners aren’t the team they were this time last year, when they were comfortably leading the competition.

This season they sit in sixth spot with just three wins to their name. Last weekend their world came crashing down after a 4-0 thrashing by a red-hot Adelaide United.

“It’s a tough run for them at the moment, Adelaide is a very good team and it was only a matter of time before they gave someone a touch up,” Bridge said.

“The Mariners are still a very good side, they recently change their coach but they are a good team and always have been.”

In what could be seen as a massive advantage to the Wanderers, the Mariners played the Wellington Phoenix last night (Thursday) in a catch-up game. The Wanderers, however, will be completely refreshed.

“It’s a tough time for them but it’s tough for everyone at this time of year,” Bridge said.

IT WAS A TOUGH win over the Newcastle Jets last week. The fi rst 20 minutes they came at us hard but Bridgey got the goal

towards the back-end of the fi rst half and we were lucky enough to hold on for the three points.

We have a bit of a jam-packed schedule coming up from Monday where we play three games against the Mariners, Victory and Phoenix in just nine days.

It is a diffi cult period but throughout the whole year Popa’s had the view it was going to be a long season with the AFC Champions League and so on.

Last year we were a fi t team and this year we are an even fi tter team so whatever’s thrown at us we have to deal with.

We knew that was going to be the schedule and as long as we prepare right, we’ll be okay.

Two of our three games will be at home which is good and they are all games which

we should get something out of. Even though it’s a quick turnaround we’re

going to face it again with the Champions League.

We just have to look at it in a positive way and know we are the fi ttest we can be.

Playing games throughout the Christmas and New Year’s period can be frustrating when you see your family and friends enjoying themselves but being a professional footballer in Australia I’ve always had to play on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day.

Popa’s given us Christmas Day off , which is good, but it’s part of football these days and is something you have to put at the back of your mind.

That’s our livelihood and that’s the way schedules are.

It’s funny because we have to be cautious about what we eat and where we go but it is what it is.

We play the Mariners on Monday and they

haven’t had the season that they would have hoped for but they still have a team that can hurt you.

They’ve been quite unsettled this year because they’ve lost a few players as well as “Arnie” and I think that’s changed their structure and discipline this year.

They came off a 4-0 walloping at the weekend which is very un-Central Coast-like, so they’ll want to bounce back from that.

We defi nitely won’t take them lightly.I hope all Wanderers supporters have a

SOCCER CROWDS ARE AGAIN in the spotlight after violence erupted in the stands at Hunter Stadium during last

Saturday night’s clash between the Jets and the Western Sydney Wanderers.

The nasty incident has led to two men being charged after they allegedly assaulted police offi cers, but the story has taken a new twist with claims that police and security guards were heavy-handed in their response to the drama.

Police say that offi cers attached to the Newcastle City Local Area Command along with the Riot Squad and Operational Support Group were on hand at the A-League clash when a fi ght break out late in the second half.

“While an offi cer was attempting to arrest a man, he was allegedly hindered by another spectator,” police said in a statement.

“The man who was hindering police was pushed out of the way by police and fell to the ground.

“Police will allege the 21-year-old man grabbed an offi cer’s groin and refused to let go. The offi cer was forced to use defensive

strikes in order to remove and restrain the man.”

The 21-year-old was taken to Waratah Police Station where he was charged with assault police and granted conditional bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, January 16.

In another incident at the match, police were speaking to three fans who were allegedly causing trouble when one of the men refused to abide by police directions to return to his seat.

Police will allege the man punched another spectator in the face three times before assaulting offi cers.

However, some say that the police response to the fi ght in the crowd on Saturday night was over the top, with a number of supporters claiming they went too far in their handling of the incident.

The Jets were saying very little.“The Club are not in a position to

comment until we receive a report from Hunter Venues who manage security and police for all events at Hunter Stadium,” a club spokesperson said.

AFTER A STRING OF below-par performances, the limelight has been on the Wanderers and it is safe to say

that they are a victim of their own success. A loss and two draws from three A-League fi xtures would be viewed by other clubs as a normal part of a gruelling season. For the Wanderers however, the string of poor results has been seen as unacceptable and it certainly wasn’t going to get easier when the side travelled to Hunter Stadium to face an in-form Newcastle Jets.

The home side were buzzing and rightly full of confi dence after winning four of their last fi ve, and the confi dence was evident in their approach as they dominated the early stages.

Despite this, the Jets never really carved out a serious goal-scoring opportunity and were lucky to not lose Mark Birighitti after the keeper handled the ball outside the box.

Karma would play its part however, as the Wanderers were able to break the deadlock just after the half hour mark.

Shinji Ono’s deep cross eventually found

its way to Mark Bridge who calmly looped his header over the despairing keeper for a 1-0 lead.

The Wanderers were perhaps lucky that the referee missed the contact by Haliti on Pepper, but it was probably the luck the Wanderers needed in a game in which they were second best.

Despite again being on top in the second half, the Jets found it really diffi cult to unlock the trademark stubborn defence of the Wanderers. If there is one team you don’t want to fall behind against it’s a team coached by Tony Popovic. The manager looked to hold-out for the lead and has every right to be confi dent with his defence, and they rarely handed the opposition a clear-cut chance on goal.

“I’m pleased for the players because they’ve performed well and haven’t got the rewards in the last three weeks. There’s a lot of belief in that dressing room,” said coach Tony Popovic.

“Getting that goal in the fi rst half made it that bit easier. We defended very well as a team and when we went forward, we looked dangerous.”

The Wanderers have denied the Newcastle Jets from acquiring Youssouf Hersi in the upcoming January transfer window. The Western Sydney Wanderers National Youth League side have been blown off the park 4-1 by top-of-the-table Sydney FC. While the Sky Blues were in control for most of the game, they only led at the break 1-0. With hope of an upset still in their sights, the Wanderers threatened to draw level and instead were wiped off the fi eld with a further three second half goals. The only Wanderers goal came in the 77th minute courtesy of Lawrence Hanna. The Wanderers sit in sixth spot and will play the eighth-placed Melbourne Heart this Sunday.

The fabulous Wander Women have enjoyed a huge 3-0 win over Perth Glory at Marconi Stadium last Saturday. The Wanderers goals came by the way of Helen Petinos in the dying seconds of fi rst half injury time, Heather Garriock in the 61st and Jenna Kingsley in the 75th. Western Sydney will now play the bottom-placed Newcastle Jets this Sunday.
