WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS VS WELL INGTON PHOEN IX

KICKOFF: SUNDAY 5.00PM @ PARRAMATTA STADIUM | TV: FOX SPORTS LIVE 5.00PM | RADIO: ABC LIVE 5.00PM

THE WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS will be eyeing off a vital opportunity to secure three points against Wellington

Phoenix in their home debut to the 2013 A-League season this Sunday afternoon.

After securing a draw against the champions, Central Coast Mariners, in the fi rst round the Wanderers come home to Pirtek Stadium and hope to get the job done against the Phoenix.

The reason this match is so vital for the Wanderers is found in their early schedule.

For the Wanderers style – absorbing pressure and attacking on the counter – to work in individual matches and across a whole season requires them to stay in touch with the opposition.

To open the season the Wanderers have already played the Mariners. These are the next fi ve Wanderers fi xtures: Phoenix at home, away to Sydney FC led by a sparkling del Piero, home against Adelaide, away to Heart and home to Melbourne Victory.

Wanderers Coach, Tony Popovic will eye the Phoenix and Heart as the best chances to secure three points and ensure the Wanderers are near the top of the ladder once the pecking order is established.

Taking a handful of points this weekend is imperative and to do so the Wanderers must hold possession and be clinical in front of goal.

Socceroos representative, Mitchell Duke, opened the scoring for the Mariners last week and it took a delightful chip into

the corner to spoil a strong defensive performance by the Wanderers.

In response, Tomi Juric showed fl ashes of his own Socceroos potential when he volleyed home a wonderful cross from Youssouf Hersi.

Juric was one of the signings made by Popovic to increase the Wanderers success in front of goal and it has paid dividends already in a tight match. After doing well in the fi rst half the Wanderers chances dried

up and they needed a calm fi nish in the 87th minute to secure the point they deserved on balance.

A clear impact of newly signed players who have a nose for goal, combined with the unpredictable attacking genius of Hersi, means the Wanderers already have a scoring formula for the tough matches.

Against the Phoenix on Sunday the Wanderers will expect the likes of Aaron Mooy, Shinji Ono and Mateo Poljak in midfi eld to dominate proceedings as the

Phoenix struggle with players called up to represent New Zealand.

If the Wanderers engine room is up to the task the second string Phoenix players could be run off their feet in their second road game in two weeks on what looks likely to be a very warm Sunday afternoon at kick-off come 5pm.

The attacking runs of Mark Bridge and Hersi, who love to break between the opposition fullbacks and centre halves are

always crucial to Wanderers’ success and will be on Sunday as well. The Phoenix have an inexperienced defensive line and were the cause of their team’s downfall against the Roar in Brisbane in round one.

Bridge and Hersi will cause havoc to that defensive line and if the deep-lying midfi elders secure more possession than last week the likes of Labinot Haliti will be able to run into attacking space from the wing back positions.

Given the great forecast for Sunday there’s

a great chance the Wanderers fans will fi ll up Pirtek Stadium and a wall of noise will greet the youngsters from Wellington. Building a home fortress is essential to a title run and the Wanderers will hope for a packed house and the foundations of a strong home record this week.

My prediction? The Wanderers will start fast and be able to close down the game late on, cruising to a 3-1 victory in front of a bouncing Red and Black Bloc.

Searching for three pointsPREVIEW BY ELISHA PEARCE

This is the fi rst time in 2013/14 that the Wanderers will play at home, and the fi rst timethey will play at Parramatta since it was re-named Pirtek Stadium

NOT MANY PLAYERS IN the A-League know what it’s like to lose a grand fi nal, and for Wanderers striker Mark

Bridge, the pain of losing to the Central Coast Mariners in the 2013 decider still hurts.

“To be honest, I’m still not over it, I think about it a lot,” Bridge told Wanderworld.

“Even watching the NRL Grand Final recently and seeing Manly lose, I know how bad that feels.”

While last season’s grand fi nal loss may still be cutting the 27-year-old deep inside, he has nothing but stellar appreciation for the club he is a part of – a club that’s turned his life around.

Since arriving from Sydney FC in June last year, Bridge was a major part of the Wanderers’ success in their debut season scoring 11 goals including the club’s fi rst ever in the A-League.

“I love it here… I feel I haven’t only improved as a player but as a person as well. I think I’ve matured a lot over the past 12 months and I’m learning every day, which is what you want as a professional sportsperson,” he said.

“11 goals was fantastic last season, if I can get that again I’ll be extremely happy but as long as we are winning I really don’t care.”

Perhaps Bridge’s rekindled passion for football and his club is largely due to the fact that he was very close to giving the game away following a number of serious injuries and off -fi eld matters at Sydney FC.

That was until Western Sydney, a club

he had always hoped would one day be introduced to the A-League competition, came calling.

“To be honest, the club I was at before last season (Sydney FC), my head wasn’t there,” Bridge admitted.

“After we won the grand fi nal at Sydney in 2010 a lot of things happened off the fi eld within the club and away from the club that just wasn’t professional, and I wasn’t doing the right thing off the pitch which has been well written about over the years.

“I feel like I’ve grown up and fi xed all those things and I feel like I’m improving every day.”

MARK BRIDGE HIT ROCK BOTTOM AT SYDNEY FC AND WAS THINKING ABOUT GIVING THE GAME AWAY. THAT WAS UNTIL THE WANDERERS CAME CALLING. NOW, HE’S BACK TO HIS BEST...

ADAM PEACOCK

ADAM Peacock is a respected sports journalist who is currently partof the Fox Sports team covering the 2013/14 A-League season

TYPICAL. JUST TYPICAL OF Australian football. We get the good, and the bad.

Record crowds, TV numbers to make TV types happy on a Monday morning and good football, which will only get better.

The best game for the weekend was the last, with Adelaide and Perth ripping into each other like one stole the other’s girlfriend. All that was missing was Jerry Springer as ref, although Ben Williams’ 12-yellow card trick was novelty enough.

ADP again shone, Brisbane started like we thought they would and yeah the Melbourne Derby fi zzled out, but 45,000 rocked up.

And of course, Central Coast and the Wanderers showed exactly why they will be up near the top again, unless there are

injuries. But given they both prepare for the season like they are about to do 27 Tough Mudders, you can’t see that happening.

Now the bad.The Socceroos against France. So much

has been spoken and written about the result and the sacking of Holger Osieck that followed.

It was quite an eye opener to have a front row seat to it all as Bozza, John Kosmina and Robbie Slater unloaded – not just about the French fl ogging, but a whole range of issues surrounding the national teams at senior and youth level. It was like fi nally, this result had given us the urge to rip off the band-aid and talk about the wound which had started to fester into something really serious.

Since David Gallop took over, it’s been a dream run with a great A-League, World Cup qualifi cation etc. Now the challenges.

The next 12 months is critical to the next 12 years for the Socceroos.

Get it right, we are where we think we should be. Get it wrong… gulp.

Should Wanderers fans be hopeful/worried Tony Popovic (pictured) will get the gig to replace Holger?

Nope, not worth worrying about. One day he’ll be a prime candidate,

but that one day isn’t now, with Ange Postecoglou and Graham Arnold the leading domestic contenders, and the mail is it is desperately close between those two in the halls of power at FFA.

LAST WEEK ’S ACT ION

WANDERERS 1 – MARINERS 1

ROUND ONE OF THE A-League saw last season’s grand fi nalists go head-to-head at a sold out Bluetongue Stadium.

Not even the most optimistic Wanderers fan could have envisaged after one season this particular match would symbolise so much. The Wanderers took to the fi eld with mixed emotions, looking for revenge from last season’s grand fi nal whilst feeling relatively confi dent after a 1-0 victory at Bluetongue last season.

The Wanderers dominated large periods of the match and looked the most likely to open the scoring.

Their fi rst real chance was provided by Mark Bridge who was causing trouble down the fl ank, though the impressive Pasfi eld produced a double save, also denying Youssouf Hersi on the follow up.

Overall it was a game for both defences, with the Wanderers usual back four following up on their form from last season with another solid display.

Even though the Wanderers had the better of the chances, the match was scoreless

until Mitch Duke broke the deadlock after latching onto a slick pass from Mariners new man Marcos Flores. It was a cool fi nish by the Mariners front man and handed them an unlikely 1-0 lead.

Wanderers continued to threaten and just as we all thought it wouldn’t be their day, Tomi Juric stepped off the bench to fi nish a good move with a darting near-post run.

Many were surprised by Tony Popovic’s decision to leave Shinji Ono and Tomi Juric on the bench, and the performances of both likely means they won’t be there again for the match against Wellington.

Last week I tipped Juric as the man to watch for the Wanderers this season, so for me it wasn’t a surprise to see him come off the bench to slot home the equaliser much to the delight of the 7,000 or so Wanderers fans who travelled up to Central Coast.

“I thought we deserved a bit more but we didn’t score when we were dominating in the fi rst half,” said Wanderers coach Tony Popovic after the game.

However, a draw against last year’s grand fi nal winners away from home is still a more than respectable result.

WHO’S SEEN THOSE VERY hairy beards Wanderers stars Mark Bridge and Nikolai Topor-Stanley

are sporting? Well, it’s because the pair currently have a bet in place where the fi rst player to shave it off has to buy the other one’s coff ees for an entire year. And with the coff ee prices exceptionally high in Sydney these days, expect these boys to look like Santa Claus come Christmas time.

The A-League has announced that 127 regular season matches will be seen in 65 countries outside of Australia this season after a global streaming deal was reached so fans can watch the game online. Full match broadcasts are available in the USA, China, Italy, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Canada, the Caribbean, Hong Kong, Singapore and Myanmar. On top of full match broadcasts, highlights of A-League matches can be viewed in 53 countries throughout Asia and the Middle East, including Japan and South Korea, on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s ‘Australian Network’. “The growth of the Hyundai A-League has been extraordinary in the last two years and that is starting to bear fruit overseas as more and more football fans around the world develop an appetite for our national competition,” said FFA CEO David Gallop. In a signifi cant boost for ex-pats, Australians travelling overseas and A-League fans in countries where matches are not broadcast, fans can watch every game live by subscribing to www.aleague.livesport.tv, dramatically increasing the availability around the globe.

The Western Sydney Wanderers have announced the signing of Westfi eld Matildas

superstar Emily van Egmond for the upcoming W-League season. The 20-year-old midfi elder has joined the Wanderers from Seattle Reign in the USA having previously played for W-League clubs Newcastle Jets and Canberra United. Citing her desire to reach her full potential as a key reason for signing, van Egmond believes that the coaching staff and facilities at the Wanderers give her the best opportunity to grow as a player. The Wanderers kick off their W-League campaign against Adelaide United on November 10 at Marconi Stadium.

I’m hearing some die-hard Wanderers fans are up in arms that their home ground of Parramatta Stadium was renamed Pirtek Stadium and not ‘Wanderland’ as it is aff ectionately known, last week. Pirtek used to be the major sponsor of the Parramatta Eels until the embattled club demanded more money for their sponsorship and Pirtek pulled out. Now, the western Sydney fl uid transfer company are back buying the naming rights to Parramatta Stadium for the next fi ve years. This is the fi rst time Parramatta Stadium has ever been sponsored. “With a long history as home of the Parramatta Eels, the stadium is continuing to attract record crowds with the Western Sydney Wanderers as co-tenants. This adds up to mean signifi cant economic benefi ts for western Sydney local businesses, with the fl ow-on eff ect of ticket sales and visitor spending,” said NSW Minister for Sport, Gabrielle Upton.

The A-League is celebrating record opening weekend crowds, with more than 100,000 attending round one matches. What a great vote of confi dence!

GOAL keeper ANTE Covic gives us a player’s perspective on the Western Sydney Wanderers

OUR WHOLE TEAM WAS very positive after our draw with the Central Coast on Saturday. Throughout the

whole 90 minutes I think we dominated the Mariners but we were probably unlucky not to get a goal by half time. The team was really pushing towards the end to get a result even though we got the equaliser in the 85th minute. I think we played some great football and can take a lot out of the fi rst game.

Even though we were down late in the game we have that mentality about us that we can get back into it. Popa said to us many times that the game’s never over as long as we keep focused and never lose our heads, and that a goal can materialise at any minute of the game. We know we were playing good football and if we just kept to our guns we knew we were good enough to get back into it, which we did. I think in the end Central Coast were dying for that fi nal whistle to blow while we were hoping the game would go on as long as possible.

We had a number of standouts on the weekend but I think Megsy (Michael Beauchamp) in the centre of defence played fantastic as did Tomi Juric and Shinji Ono who I think turned the game for us.

I’m really looking forward to playing back at Pirtek Stadium this Sunday against Wellington in front of a very vocal home crowd. We’re going into the game thinking nothing less than three points is going to do. We’re defi nitely going out for the win and we defi nitely know it’s a game we should win.

Wellington had some players missing through international duty but if Jeremy Brockie returns he’ll be someone I’ll have to watch out for, he was in great form last season.

Wellington are a hardworking solid bunch that have a very experienced coach in Ernie Merrick which means they’ll be organised. It’s a game we can’t take lightly but we are defi nitely going to be playing our own game and go for the win.

Determined to win
