WACSSO Invites you! We are very excited to bring you our 84th Annual WACSSO Conference. We invite you to join us for another enriching conference weekend of learning, networking and fun that will set your Association on the path to success.

Annual Conference is the one time of year public school parents and school communities from across the whole of our great state come together, learn and share experiences about education and the public school system.

Come celebrate our 2018 theme ‘Make it Happen. Make it Matter. The Power of Parents!’ and enjoy a weekend of learning and networking. This year’s conference theme celebrates the power of parents in improving students’ educational outcomes and shaping positive, healthy school communities.

Conference weekend is one big standing ovation for all of the amazing things we achieve as parents, carers, P&C volunteers and, collectively, as an organisation. As well as the outstanding accomplishments of our State’s public education system. Following this, Conference will highlight useful tools for P&Cs to use in the running of their associations.

Annual Conference is WACSSO’s key event; the weekend guides the direction of our organisation and serves as the platform for future activities and initiatives. During Saturday’s agenda item session, delegates vote on new policy and determine priority issues.

Delegates will have the opportunity to attend two of eight workshops; hear from speakers, including our keynotes, Colin Pettit and Jane Caro; ask a question of the Minister for Education and Training, or Director General Department of Education; enjoy student performances; network and share ideas with like-minded people from all across the state; engage with our generous exhibitor-sponsors; and, of course, kick up your heels at our much loved Saturday evening sundowner.

Keynote SPEAKERS Colin PettitCommissioner for Children and Young PeopleCommissioner for Children and Young People Colin Pettit has almost 40 years’ experience in working with children and young people in the education sector across Western Australia and Tasmania in teaching, administration and executive roles. In all of his education roles Colin has had a focus on improving the wellbeing of children and young people.

Colin was appointed Commissioner in November 2016 and has a statutory responsibility to monitor, protect and advocate for the wellbeing of the more than 590,000 children and young people under the age of 18 in Western Australia.

The Commissioner will present the key findings from his major education consultation with 1,900 WA school students. This consultation explored the factors that influence a student’s level of engagement in school and what support they need both at school and at home.

Much effort has been put into developing resources, frameworks, policies and programs to support and engage students. This work is important and has helped many students, but by listening to the voices of children and young people, it is clear there is more to be done to create a truly responsive and equitable education system.

Jane CaroAuthor, Novelist, Journalist, Broadcaster, Columnist, Advertising Writer and Media and Social CommentatorJane has published five books and has recently published “Just a Queen” a sequel to her earlier work “Just a Girl” and “Plain Speaking Jane”

A regular on the Gruen Transfer she has also appeared in the media including weekly spots on Weekend Sunrise, and Sunrise. She has created, written, presented and co-produced for ABC Radio and Television. She has also appeared on The Drum, Q&A, The Project, Daily Edition, Mornings on 9, Studio 10 and Today. She writes regular monthly columns for MT (Management Today) Magazine, and the Sun Herald’s Sunday Life.

Presentation session Helping kids by building a community of men in schoolsWayne Bradshaw, CEO, The Fathering Project Research shows that if there is an effective parent or carer in a child’s life, then the child’s outcomes in life are often significantly enhanced. There is less substance abuse and risk of suicide, and better learning, physical health and improved social skills.

The Fathering Project’s school program aims to create an environment where fathers and father figures can gather to share experiences; create mateship; learn to be intentional in their parenting; create networks and learn some skills for the benefit of their kids.

Wayne will discuss the project’s programs and the evaluation that these build engagement between fathers and their kids, plus the added bonus of improving school community.
