Nursing home - Essential facilitiesChoosing a maternity hospital or nursing home for the birth of your baby can be time consuming. There are so many factors to consider such as distance from your home, the costs, facilities they offer, the quality of medical staff , etc.

Finding something suitable within your budget is not always easy. To help you make your choice, we have listed some facilities that must be present so that you and your newborn can be properly cared for. 1. Is there a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)?If you give birth a premature or unwell baby, you may need special medical care. To handle such situations, the hospital or nursing home should have a NICU. As well as having some special medical equipments like incubators, feeding tubes, phototherapy lights, respiratory monitors, and cardiac monitors, the NICU should have staff trained to care for very small or ill babies.

Page 5: W02 - Threre is, There Are, Some, Any, Preposition of Place 2

2. Do they have access to any blood bank? It’s vital to have access to a blood bank. If you bleed excessively after the birth, you

will need a blood transfusion. Make sure the hospital or nursing home you choose has access to your blood type and quantity of blood available is sufficient in advanced. If the hospital has its own blood bank, you can enquire about its cleanliness and accessibility.

You should also check that medical equipment such as needles are opened in front of you and then destroyed after use. Some hospitals only release blood from their bank when they get some blood from donation. The blood donor does not necessarily need to be of the same blood type as you. It is best to agree with a family member or friend beforehand on who will donate blood if required.

3. What is the hygiene standard?A good indication of the quality of a hospital or nursing home is the level of hygiene of

the equipments, staff, rooms and bathrooms. While taking a tour of a nursing home or hospital try and check what the level of hygiene is.

• Is the linen changed regularly? (sheets)• Is the food prepared hygienically? • Are the rooms cleaned daily? • Is the medical equipment sterilised?

Page 6: W02 - Threre is, There Are, Some, Any, Preposition of Place 2

And always check the bathrooms. They are an important part of your stay and can be a source of infection if not properly cleaned. Also, try to observe if the medical staff wash and sanitize their hands before caring for each patient. You will feel more comfortable knowing that the nursing home or hospital meets your hygiene standards.

4. Is there an ambulance service? Some smaller nursing homes or hospitals only have enough facilities to deal with the most common situations. Choosing such a place is fine as long as they have an ambulance service. If complications during the birthing process require you to be transferred to a bigger or better-equipped hospital, it is vital that an ambulance is available 24/7 to get you to your destination in time.
