Mens Firsts Match Report Victoria University 3-0 (2-0) Upper Hutt City Kelburn Park (2.30pm kick-off) Saturday May 23, 2015 A spirited fight from a young Upper Hutt side was ultimately seen off by University which moved back into third position on the Capital Premier table while also recording its fourth clean sheet of the season. Although striving to avoid a second-consecutive relegation, Upper Hutt found itself 1-0 down with essentially Universitys first attack of the match on six minutes. University striker Seb Ninness laid-off for right-back Andrew Staples to cross to about the six-yard line and left-midfielder Michael Lahoods first-time shot struck the bar and rebounded into the goal off the prone Upper Hutt keeper*.. With the generous grass covering on Kelburn Park arguably impeding the pace of the game, nei-ther side found it easy to settle into flowing football as the half evolved. Nonetheless, the visiting keeper needed to react quickly around his penalty area to prevent a slide-pass from University right-midfielder Patrick Wal-ler finding Lahood, before at the other end of the park home keeper Matt Walker likewise left his line quickly to stymie attacks. Soon after Lahood had put a threatening ball through the Upper Hutt box from the left, Universi-ty made it 2-0 on 26 minutes. A right-wing corner was played short by Lahood to Staples who deliv-ered into the danger zone, University centre-back Daniel Diggins touched on and striker Yannik Wouts turned quickly to slam home. The game opened up for the remaining 20-odd minutes of the half and, following a rally from Up-per Hutt, University again threatened when a Wouts touch-on set up Ninness who was denied in a one-on-on. Walker then claimed a dangerous cross from the right on the second attempt and a slipped ball into the University box soon after almost teed up a prime shooting opportunity. Absorbing a strike from University central-midfielder Miles Lloyd, the Upper Hutt keeper launched an instant counter-attack, but Walker just won out in the foot race. Following a further dangerous attack apiece, University came close to extending its lead as the half drew to a close when central-midfielder Mike Garnett headed a Lahood right-wing corner nar-rowly wide of the far post. University gained the initial second half ascend-ancy. A break by Lahood teed up Wouts who shot right of target, endeavor by Wouts on the right and a touch on by Waller presented a striking chance for Lahood that was smothered by the Upper Hutt

keeper and then Waller was also tackled in the act of shooting after receiving another right-wing ball from Wouts. The visiting side came back into the match on about the hour mark and dominated much of the possession thereafter, albeit with University creat-ing clear-cut chances on the break. Upper Hutt shot right of target and then straight at Walker in prime position with the rebound being sent narrowly over the crossbar, before University broke with Waller being squeezed out as he round-ed the keeper to the left and only finding the side-netting. University right-back Ben McLean then made a decisive block as the visiting side pressured and earned repeated corners. Garnett delivered a free-kick from the left fol-lowing a foul on Waller that Lahood headed over the Upper Hutt goal, Walker cleared his lines at the other end, and then Waller struck at his opponents goal from distance. An Upper Hutt player also chanced his arm at the University goal from distance and the visiting side put in a cross from the right that deflected for-tuitously into Walkers hands, before returning to the other end Lahood mishit a long shot and Uni-versity threatened on another break. The game then entered a moment of surrealness when, following Upper Hutt being pulled back for a foul throw on about halfway, the visiting coach tried to interfere as University attempted to seize advantage with a quick throw-in of its own.. Play promptly evolved to create a one-on-one for Waller, only for the referee to stop proceedings in order to present a yellow card with play restarting from the point of the University throw. Back on attack, Universitys Lahood teed up Waller whose side-foot attempt from close range was blocked with Wouts striking the rebound over and, mopping up an Upper Hutt foray, Walker promptly put Wouts through with a long kick but the University striker headed to the right of goal with the keeper drawn. A short Upper Hutt corner on the right saw a cross delivered to the far post where a header flew just over the University bar and soon after a stray back-pass set the visiting side away on another at-tack that was scrambled out for a corner. However, following a calm subsequent turn out of defence, Staples linked with Lahood who put Matt Rowe through on the Upper Hutt keeper and the substitute striker duly slotted from the right-corner of the box to make it 3-0 in stoppage time.

  • Coachs comments: An Upper Hutt side fighting for its league survival combined with the traditional wild bush length of the Kelburn Park grass at this time of the year arguably contributed to this not be-ing one of our greatest showings of the season. But that said, we got the job done and in so do-ing, not only bumped ourselves back above Island Bay -- albeit, their game against Wellington United having been postponed -- but registered our fourth clean sheet in nine league and cup games in the sea-son-proper. Id like to draw particular praise to the lads for this achievement, especially given the numerous changes weve already made during the course of proceedings for various reasons, and heres a few progress stats: 2015 Hilton-Petone Div 1 -- no clean sheets in

five games, average of almost two goals con-ceded per game

2015 league/cup -- four clean sheets in nine games, average of under 1.5 goals conceded per game

2014 -- two out of five clean sheets in Hilton-Petone Div 1 and only three in 21 league/cup games

2013 -- three out of six clean sheets in Hilton-Petone Div 2 and five in 19 league/cup games

Regarding our best performers, obviously credit to the defensive unit and to the team as a whole for seeing out the win. Man-of-the-match was Digs who fitted seamlessly back into the side after an absence created by some unfortunate circumstances on his part and the admirable performance of others in the shirt. Our next game is going to be another big test for us, hosting Island Bay United in the Chatham Cup at 2pm on Monday. The season is well underway now and already some teams are proving just how competitive they will be. The Mens Thirds lead Capital 3, while the Accies (our fourth team) have a perfect record of four wins from four. This weekend also sees the first intra-club derby of the season as the Uni Cycles and Unicorns meet each other. In the womens grades, the Firsts visit league leaders Petone, out at Petone Memorial on Sunday for a vital clash to set the scene for the rest of the season.
