1 vRealize Operations Management Pack for Citrix

XenDesktop User Guide The vRealize Operations Management Pack for Citrix XenDesktop User Guide describes the primary features of the vRealize Operations Management Pack for Citrix XenDesktop, including dashboards and metrics that allow users to optimize the monitoring and management of their XenDesktop-related resources.

1.1 Intended Audience This information is intended for anyone using a licensed copy the vRealize Operations Management Pack for XenDesktop.

3 Introduction to the XenDesktop Adapter The XenDesktop Management Pack (adapter) is an embedded adapter for vCenter Operations(vCOps)/vRealize Operations (vROps). The adapter retrieves data from XenDesktop in order to monitor, manage, and collect metrics regarding XenDesktop-specific resources such as Applications, Desktops, and Delivery Groups.

3.1 How the Adapter Collects Data During each data collection cycle, the XenDesktop adapter queries the OpenData API of a Delivery Controller in a Site to obtain data regarding XenDesktop resources.

The collection interval for the adapter instance resource determines how often the adapter collects data. The default collection interval is five minutes. For information about changing the collection interval, refer to the Configuring the Properties File section in the accompanying vRealize Operations Management Pack for Citrix XenDesktop Installation and Configuration Guide.

The XenDesktop adapter supports either autodiscovery or manual discovery of resources.

When you enable autodiscovery for a XenDesktop adapter instance, the adapter creates resources in vROps and collects data after the main collection query runs. If a new resource belongs to a resource kind that does not exist in vROps, the adapter creates the resource kind.



3.2 Data the Adapter Collects

The Citrix XenDesktop adapter can collect performance, health, availability, and capacity data for a XenDesktop site and its related resources.

The XenDesktop adapter recognizes the following nine (9) resources:

4 Dashboards Dashboards are the primary user interface that allow the user to monitor and troubleshoot Citrix XenDesktop data problems in vROps.

The following dashboards are available in the Citrix XenDesktop Management Pack:

NOTE: For each of the Resource Overview dashboards, there is a “Health Status” widget. To display the Effective Load Index as Percent, ensure that you edit the widget with the custom setting average_load_index_summary_for_<resource name>. – Brian, should we include more detail about customizing the widget? If so, can you provide me that information?

XenDesktop “Mashup” Dashboards “Mashup” dashboards display similar metrics across a XenDesktop resource and non-XenDesktop resources that are related to it.

4.1 XenDesktop Topology Overview (Relationships)

This dashboard displays the topology (relationships view) of your XenDesktop infrastructure. By selecting a XenDesktop resource within the XenDesktop Relationships widget on the left, you can quickly view additional details about its interrelationships as well as key health and performance indicators.

4.2 XenDesktop Application Overview

This dashboard provides an overview of each XenDesktop Application being utilized within your XenDesktop environment. Select a XenDesktop Application from the widget on the left to view summaries about its instances, session counts, connection counts, and logon durations.

4.3 XenDesktop Catalog Overview

This dashboard provides an overview of each XenDesktop Catalog resource. Select a XenDesktop catalog from the widget on the left to view summaries of its load indexes, session counts, connection state counts, connection counts, and logon durations.

4.4 XenDesktop Delivery Group Overview

This dashboard provides an overview of each XenDesktop Delivery Group resource, including summaries of its load indexes, session counts, connection state counts, connections, and logon durations.

4.5 XenDesktop Desktop Overview This dashboard provides an overview of the Desktop instances being utilized within specific delivery groups within your XenDesktop environment. Select a Desktop from the widget on the left to view summaries of its instances, session counts, connection state counts, connection counts, and logon durations.

4.6 XenDesktop Hypervisor Overview This dashboard provides an overview of your XenDesktop Hypervisor resource(s), including summaries regarding its load indexes, session counts, connection state counts, connection counts, and logon durations.

4.7 XenDesktop Site Overview Dashboard This dashboard is an overview of your XenDesktop Site, including counts of all active resources within the site and summaries of its load indexes, session counts, connection state counts, connection counts, and logon durations.

4.8 XenDesktop VDA Machine Overview This dashboard provides an overview of each VDA Machine resource in your XenDesktop environment. Select a VDA machine from the widget on the left to view summaries regarding each machine’s load indexes, session counts, connection counts, connection counts, and logon durations.

4.9 XenDesktop VDA Machine Mashup This dashboard enables a comparison view of all VDA machine resources according to the same key performance metrics displayed in the VDA Machine Overview dashboard.

4.10 XenDesktop Top-N Catalogs This dashboard displays up to 15 of the “highest utilization” Catalog resources across your XenDesktop infrastructure according to metrics such as Average CPU Load Index, Average Disk Load Index, and Average Log On Duration.

4.14 XenDesktop Top-N VDA Machines This dashboard displays up to 25 of the “highest utilization” VDA Machines across your XenDesktop infrastructure according to metrics such as Average Effective Load Index, Average Session Count Load Index, and Average Connection Count.

5 Using Tags To further customize your views within the Management Pack, four (4) tags are currently available for filtering by XenDesktop machines hosted on VMware VMs, Datastores, Host Systems, or Server OS Machines:

VMware VMs hosting: Citrix XenDesktop Machines

VMware Datastores hosting: Citrix XenDesktop Machines

VMware Host Systems hosting: Citrix XenDesktop Machines

XenDesktop Server OS Machines

To select a tag, perform the following steps:

1. Click on the Content navigation shortcut ( ).

2. Click on the Dashboards view in the navigation pane.

3. Select Edit ( ) on the Citrix XenDesktop widget.

4. Select the Dashboard Configuration tab.

5. Select the Edit Widget ( ) for the widget you want to edit.

6. Expand the XenDesktop Container option.

7. Select the desired tag and click Save.



6 Troubleshooting the Citrix XenDesktop Adapter

Known troubleshooting information can help you diagnose and correct common problems with the Citrix XenDesktop adapter.

6.1 Troubleshooting an Adapter Instance Perform these general troubleshooting steps to diagnose and correct problems with a Citrix XenDesktop adapter instance:

Edit the adapter instance and click Test Connection to verify the connection to vROps. Refer to section 6.2, Testing Connection Failures.

View the collection status and collection state for the adapter instance resource on the Environment Overview page in vROps.

Check the adapter and collector logs for errors. Refer to section 6.3, Viewing System Log Files, for details.

6.2 Testing Connection Failures When clicking on Test Connection, the following connection errors are possible.

6.2.1 Bad OData host name

Check to ensure the host name provided is correct.

6.2.2 Bad OData user name/password

Check to ensure the OData user name and password was entered correctly.

6.3 Viewing System Log Files You can check for XenDesktop adapter errors in the adapter and collector log files. You can view the adapter and collector log files in the vROps user interface, or in an external log viewer.



The Citrix XenDesktop adapter log files are in the $ALIVE_BASE/user/log/adapters/CitrixXenDesktopAdapter/ folder. The collector log files are in the $ALIVE_BASE/user/log/ folder.

The logging level is set to ERROR by default. To troubleshoot issues, set the logging level to INFO. To view detailed messages, including micro steps, queries, and returned results, set the logging level to DEBUG.

You can set the base log level for the collector via Administrator -> Support -> Logs -> Select Collector folder -> Select Edit Properties -> Edit Root logger level.

NOTE: If you set the logging level to DEBUG, log files can become large very quickly. Set the logging level to DEBUG only for short periods of time.
