Assim, em vez da Renascença temos adirecção oposta, célere e vertiginosa daalienação e hecatombe. of the Forum is someone of PortugueseDescent or through inter-marriage. One doesnot apply to be a member, one must just fall into the definition thereof, and is automatically amember, thus the emphasis on the Forum notbeing an entity of some sort, but being thecommunity itself. The Forum fights against theinjustices towards members of the SouthAfrican Portuguese Community, and urges thatmembers mandate the Forum so that it canachieve proper representation. The Forumhas a National Structure in place that is alsonecessary to have proper representation.Another aspect would be engaging with civilsociety, this would mean forming partnershipswith authorities and getting to know our localward councillors. The Forum has had representation at theLusito Land Festivals for five consecutiveyears from 2005 to 2009. The Forum hasdecided that we have done what we can atthese festivals and instead of representing theForum at the 2010 Festival, chose to hit theroad and go to the different corners of thecommunity instead of waiting for them to cometo the Forum.

A report from the presidents of each of theProvinces proceeded after Mr. Ferreirinha'saddress. The following were the generalpo in ts ment ioned by the d i f fe ren trepresentatives that were able to attend:

Western Province – Manuel Esmeraldo:Emphasis of the efforts of this province hasbeen on job creation, especially for the youth.Another area of focus is usually fisheries, forthose members of the Portuguese Communitywhose livelihoods depend on this sector.

KwaZulu Natal – João de Jesus: Discussedcrime levels during the Soccer World Cup.

Gauteng – Manny Ferreirinha: Currentlyconcentrating on certain murder cases. ThisProvince is the hub if the Forum and puts a lotof effort in fighting the criminal injustice thattakes place against members of ourcommunity. Every police station in Gauteng iscovered.

Free State – Gabriel Jardim (problem withthe recording)

Northern Cape – Antonio José de Almeida(problem with the recording)

Eastern Cape (was unable to attend)Mpumalanga (was unable to attend)Limpopo (was unable to attend)North West (was unable to attend)

The Youth sector had three speakers. TheseSpeakers were André da Costa of ManjohRanch, Carla Barreto of the Forum, andBernard de Gouveia.

André da Costa urged the importance ofgetting the youth to register themselves at theConsulate. Most youth go through stages intheir responsibilities and awareness levels ofwhat takes place around them in thecommunity and in society. The Forum exists tofight for the future of the youth, since the youthis the future. The situation is desperate. We allneed to stand up and help Manny Ferreirinhamake our existence known. Also, there is ashortage in Portuguese Language teachers. There are many Portuguese youth in thiscountry that want to learn the language butdon't know where to go. So if the numbers ofthe population of our community wererealistically reflected, then maybe thePortuguese government as well as the SouthAfrican government would consider the needsof our community and also acknowledge ourcontribution to the economy and society. Goget yourselves registered at the consulate. Gomake yourselves known at the embassy. Also, fill out the mandate forms for the Forum, asnumbers are what count to make a presenceknown.

Carla Barreto brought up the situation ofdiscrimination towards the educated youth ofour community due to the implementation of

certain Affirmative Action initiatives. Is thecountry not shooting itself in the foot with someof these initiatives? Resources are wasted aspeople that are educated here end up leavingthe country in search of employment as theyare unable to find employment in South Africa. She, like André, also emphasised theimportance of the Youth registering themselvesat the Consulate so that Portugal would have abetter understanding of the number ofPortuguese individuals living in South Africa.Carla also mentioned that the Youth shouldapply for the EU passports if they are able to, ashaving both a Portuguese and South Africanpassport could prove to be convenient.

Bernard de Gouveia is a registered accountantand a Portuguese Forum founding member, and wants to inform people about annualreturns. Private companies have to submitannual returns, and now Close Corporationmust also submit annual returns. These areneeded to keep your business active. If you donot submit these, your company becomesdeactivated, and you are then expected to payall the outstanding returns as well as fines. Allthose starting new businesses are urged toapply for a tax number very soon in the processas it is taking longer and longer to receive a taxnumber once applied for. Also, be aware of fraudsters. And make surethat your wills are up to date, that your spouseswill be able to have access to the estate.

as we cannot deal with the crime situation, ourbusinesses are affected, our schools areaffected, everything is affected. We should notlet ourselves be kept in the dark. The Forum's two projects, EtwatwaCommunity Patrol Project and the WinnieMandela (Tembisa) Community Project, haveboth been in place for some time and crimeslevels in both areas have decreasedsignificantly. We have a memorial service that takes placeevery year in November in honour of thevictims of crime. Amarble monument, established in the Lady of Fatima Church hall inBrentwood Park, Benoni, has up to date over400 names of those of our community that havebeen murdered. Everywhere we go in SouthAfrica we happen to pass some or othermemorial, being it a monument, crosses, orflowers. They kill our policemen. They kill ourcivil society.Manny then shortly discussed a few crimecases that the Forum is currently dealing with.

Agriculture – Johnny de Freitas:Spoke about the success of their meetings withcivil society in improving security for thefarmers, and improving rural safety. He thanksManny Ferreirinha for his help in the situation.Johnny also mentioned that the agriculturesector is a difficult sector in terms of productionand prices that keep on changing; therand/dollar exchange rate that is not in favourof them, etc. At the moment, they are goingthrough a rough patch. We as Portuguese have our roots here in SouthAfrica and that Portugal will never be able toaccommodate such a huge influx ofPortuguese that want to move back toPortugal. We should all just make the best ofwhat we can here, since we are after all SouthAfricans.Manny da Costa also spoke with regards toagriculture:Farming isn't as negative as some peoplemake it out to be. There is a great future forfarmers, especially in Gauteng; Young farmerof the year has gone to a Portuguese Farmerfor the past three years. There is also a greatlyincreasing farming opportunity throughout therest of Africa as there have been 37 Africancountries that have come to South Africalooking for our farmers. If we look at China andIndia, which represent almost half the world'spopulation, there are a lot of mouths to feed.

that took place in 2000. He spoke about theinjustices against our community and thememorial services that are held at his church inhonour of these victims every year. He thenproceeded to put on view a slide show thatdisplayed the faces of numerous Portuguesevictims of crime as well as the details of thedeaths. Everyone in the conference hall satand observed in silence until the end of theslide show.

Women's Support Group – Encarnação deFreitas:

There is not enough surplus milk that existstoday in the world to make a cup of tea for everymember of the population of India and China. There is also not enough beef in the world tomake one McDonald's burger for every memberof that population. Thus there being a big futurefor the farming industry, especially for SouthAfricans.

Fisheries – Manuel Esmeraldo: The fisheryindustry makes up the livelihoods of a significantportion (about 30 percent) of the PortugueseCommunity of the Western Cape. An annual“blessing of the fleet” takes place where theboats go out to see and a priest/bishop blessesthe boats.

Forestry – Manny Ferreirinha: Afew years agothe industry went through a bad patch wherecertain sawmills were wiped out and thus manyjobs too, leaving thousands without jobs. Today, there is a fear that the same thing is going tohappen again. Many privatised sawmills havecreated much competition. We need to assistgovernment in this industry, that we can savethese jobs.

Sport – Manny Ferreirinha: All the soccerclubs came together for a meeting to discuss theSoccer World Club. The members at thismeeting argued that the event would neve

would not be included as they would not qualify.Much to their surprise, they were very wrong. The meeting concluded with the establishmentof the Portuguese Soccer Federation of SouthAfrica. This establishment created some unityamongst the different clubs. A tournamentbetween the clubs then commenced.

Publicity:Journalists (information bill) – José Luis da

Silva: Emphasized that the problems of theForum, are in essence the problem of theCommunity, and that the community has the rightto information.

Voz Portuguesa – Idalina Henriques:Emphasized that just as the Forum is thecommunity, the Voz Portuguese Newspaperbelongs to the community. It does not exist to

make a profit. It exists to give members of thecommunity a voice. It started seven years ago.35 000 copies are printed. What feeds thefunding of the newspaper? Advertising anddonations.

Website and Facebook Group Page – CarlaBarreto:

The Portuguese Forum has a brand newwebsite that went live this past week. Visit it atwww.portugueseForum.org.za. Mandate formscan be downloaded from this site filled in andthen sent back to the Forum via email or fax. TheForum also has a Facebook group page that upto date has around 145 members. This grouppage allows members of the community tocommunicate with the Forum as well as eachother thus providing a platform for networkin

A significant number of Portuguesepeople are surrounded or confronted by crime ora violent situation every day. She states that thepolice are trying hard to stop the attacks onshops. The group is trying to build a communityof support and resources. The victims of crimessuch as domestic violence, rape, high jacking, widowed women, etc, need therapy andcounselling as soon as possible. Women needto be more educated in terms of finances, taxmatters, policies, etc., especially if they are to beleft widowed. The Portuguese Forum have beeninstrumental in developing a network of supportand resources that we are fortunate to haveavailable to us, being a support groupestablished for widows to provide emotionalsupport; a 24 hr Hotline available to anyoneneeding assistance in situations such as arobbery, attacks at home, domestic violence, medical emergencies and even if you just a flattyre; and the iThemba rape and trauma centrethat allows a women to receive medical andpsychological assistance immediately, 24 hrs aday.

Liga da Mulher Portuguesa na A.S.(Jhb.) –Valentina Gouveia: Knowledge is power. TheForum is a vehicle to empower ourselves as acommunity. We exist to offer help to thosewomen of the Community that need it. Forexample, a couple had a child that was mentallychallenged, and did not have medical aid fortreatment. We also support the CANSAassociation.

Martins: We must understand what partnershipsare. A member of a partnership does not havegreater say over the other. Partnerships areabout equal rights, equal command, and equalsay. The existence of fraud and corruption inGovernment in general was emphasized on.Even out of the Government. And the membersof the Government themselves are often victimsof fraud, such as card duplication. He states that people in general are afraid tospeak up. However, groups like the Forum doexist. And it is these groups that speak for thepeople. The people just need to makethemselves known to the Forum and mandatethe Forum so that it has better representationand can effectively approach government.Petitions are useful. Not small ones, butpetitions of ten thousand or more.DA– DemocraticAlliance (Manny de Freitas wasunable to attend)

He also stated that the community is strong butFr Carlos Gabriel confirms that the communityneeds a voice. The Voz Portuguesa newspaperneeds to go out weekly as the paper is the voiceof the community. People tend to forget whatwas in the previous issue where as if it wasweekly, people would remember it and would bemore likely to get the next issue.

Manuel Esmeraldo presidente doW.C., Carlos Aguiar, Wayne deFreitas e Luis Marques marcaram

South Africa has progressed through amonumental transformation over the last 16years. This transformation has brought aboutm a n y e x c i t i n g d e v e l o p m e n t s a n dopportunities. However, with this, crime hasevolved into frightening reality for the people ofthis country. The Portuguese community is faced with thisreality on a daily basis. Many of us, togetherwith our husbands operate cash businesseswhere there is a high risk of armed robberiesand violent attacks. The reality for many of us isthat we live in fear of some violent act takingplace against our loved ones, or ourselves. Many Portuguese women have been widowed, their children having lost a father or mother, allthrough these horrific acts of violence. The Por tuguese Forum have been

instrumental in developing a network ofsupport and resources that we are fortunate tohave available to us:

A support group established for widows to

provide emotional support.A 24 hr Hotline available to anyone needing

assistance in situations such as a robbery, attacks at home, domestic violence, medicalemergencies and even if you just a flat tyre!

The iThemba rape and trauma centre that

allows a women to receive medical andpsychological assistance immediately, 24 hrs aday. The women of the Portuguese forum firmlybelieve that women in our community need tobecome more knowledgeable, independentand self sufficient. This will lead them to better

manage situations should something happento their husbands or loved ones:They need to become educated and advisedregarding legal and financial matters, includingthe importance of having wills in place for bothhusband and wife, the benefits of medical aid, disability and life insurance cover. ManyPortuguese people overlook the necessity ofthese, with many having regrets later in life.Women also need to inform themselves and beprepared for any eventualities. They shouldknow who and how to contact importantpeople:Their lawyer, bookkeeper, banker etc. Theyshould have their own bank accounts in thecase of their husband's assets being frozen. Before marrying, they should consider have ananti-nuptial contract with accrual drawn up.Contracts such as these can be drawn up oncewomen are already married, but this is muchmore difficult and needs to be done by anattorney. Women need to be educated aboutmatters in their husband's businesses in casesomething should happen to them: bankaccounts, partnership contracts, tax matters, policies etc. As difficult as it is to think abouttragic things that may happen in our lives,

In the case of being a victim of crime, it is of vitalimportance that the women follow through withreporting the crime and providing evidencewhere necessary.

It is always interesting to know what otherlike-minded citizens have to say about acertain subject, and what the overall feeling isover a situation. We will also benefit from it interms of statistical information about ourcommunity. This is why a new poll will be heldin every issue of the Voz Portuguesa, witheach issue supplying the results of the pollfrom the previous issue. All are welcome totake part in the poll. The results of the above poll indicate thediversity of the feelings of the Portugueseresidents of South Africa with regards toemigration. There seems to be a gentle yetsignificant increase in numbers from thosenot wanting to, to those considering, to thosethat do want to emigrate, with almost half ofthe responses selecting (a) I want toemigrate within the next 10 years. This couldpossibly be a common feeling and couldrepresent a general national statistic ofcertain ethical groups in South Africa. Thismeans that generally, the feeling is that thecommunity believes that they could find abetter life elsewhere.

was establishedsoon after one of the

members, Niki Duarte (24 years oldat the time), was diagnosed withAcuteLeukaemia inAugust 2009. Leukaemia is acancer of the blood where there is amassive over-production of defective whiteblood cells which displaces normal healthyred and white blood cells as well as platelets, thereby weakening the body. Red bloodcells (carry oxygen around the body),white blood cells (fight infection) andplatelets (prevent bleeding) are all producedin our bone marrow, and Niki was soon toldthat he needed a bone marrow stem celltransplant to have any chance of survival.Due to his ethnic background, Niki had an

estimated 1 in 120 000 chance of finding amatch as there are thousands of tissue typesand he needed a perfect tissue type match(those that are Portuguese or have aLatin background had a higher chance ofbeing a match). With only + - 65 000 peopleon the SouthAfrican Bone Marrow registry, chances were slim that Niki would find adonor in SouthAfrica and would most likelyhave to search internationally. This iswhere came in and through

proceeded tocreate as much awareness as possibleabout Niki, Leukaemia and The SunflowerFund. Another objective was to try raisemuch needed funds to increase the number ofdonors on the SABone Marrow Registry(SABMR) as not everyone could afford to payfor their own tests, which cost R1 000 perperson. managedto add over 100 people onto the registrythrough their efforts and fundraisinginitiatives which included fundraisinglunches, the selling of shirts and vuvuzelasleading up to The World Cup and afew other initiatives. After countless hours spent inhospital and undergoing Chemotherapy,Niki finally found a 100% Stem Cell matchmid July 2010. The donor happened to be a60 year oldAmerican gentleman and Niki'stransplant was set for the 22 ofSeptember 2010. This was later moved tothe 23 of September as there was a delaywith the stem cells coming over from the USA.Once Niki's donor was confirmed, it wasdecided that all funds raised would go towardspaying for some of his medical costs as hedid not have medical aid and his transplantwould cost in excess of R1 million excludingfuture treatment. With the assistance of

hundreds of people and a number oforganizations such as 'Os Lusiadas','A.C.P.P.' and 'Redskins',

has raised around R450 000 todate which has all gone in some way toassisting the cause, be it paying forpeople to be added to the registry or payingfor some of Niki's medical costs.Shortly before Niki's transplant a prayerchain was created where at any given time ofthe day, or night, Niki was being prayedfor by someone. Through all of thesecountless prayers and more, as well asthrough God's grace Niki is currentlyrecovering from his transplant and 2 monthsafter his transplant has been declaredCancer free! He will continue to haveweekly checkups to monitor his health andstill needs to remain cautious in all that hedoes as his immune system is still very weakand in recovery. His road to recovery is still along one and it will be months before his life isback to normal but he truly has come a longway since being diagnosed with Leukaemiaover 13 months ago.

is still continuingto raise funds to cover some of Niki's medicalfees and have recently had a team of 5cyclists raise funds by entering theMomentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge. For moreinfo or should you be interested in donatingto this cause please contact the custodian of

Community Corner:

Iam seventeen years old and am the first

generation in my family to be born in SouthAfrica. Both my parents are Portuguese

and were born in Madeira. Although I am fluentin Portuguese, I tend to reply to my parents inEnglish when they speak to me in Portuguese. As a toddler, all I knew was Portuguese, butattending English schools and having oldersiblings speak to me in English, Portuguesethen became my second language.Throughout my primary school career, Iattended extra Portuguese classes which isone of the main reasons why I am still able toconfidently speak, read and write Portuguesetoday. As my grandparents are unable tospeak English, I was obliged as theirgranddaughter to communicate with them intheir language.During my earlier years, it was in fact anobligation to attend extra Portuguese classes, but at the time I was too young to even realisethe point in learning such a language, as mostof my friends my age, even the Portugueseones, are unable to speak Portuguese. Nowthat I am older, I realise that there was in fact apoint in bothering to learn, as now I'm reapingthe benefits. You may be asking yourself whatbenefits could being fluent in Portuguese inSouth Africa possibly bring, especially forsomeone my age? Being able to speak aforeign language in the corporate world bringsendless job opportunities, as it is so rareespecially in South Africa. Being able to speakPortuguese automatically makes you morefavourable than the average person whospeaks the conventional English and

Afrikaans. How many people in South Africacan already speak those two languages incontrast with the number that can speak allthree, Portuguese being the third?Seeing Asian and German friends my ageproudly speak their language to their siblingsand parents, makes me think why us asPortuguese people can't do the same. ManyPortuguese people living in South Africa areonly the first or second generation born inSouth Africa, but it is so disappointing that weare already forgetting our roots and whatmakes us, Portuguese people, different.Nowadays, having Portuguese parents orbeing of Portuguese descent is seen more as afashion statement than what it truly means tobe proudly Portuguese. It is said that as a child, learning a language is alot easier than learning as an adult, but if youhave the drive within you then by all meanslearn the language. Most Portuguese peoplehave an advantage as they are likely to have arelative who will be willing to teach thelanguage, even if it is the basics, while othersmay have to pay for extra classes. Wheneveryou are presented with the opportunity to learnPortuguese, take it.It's about time we come together as acommunity to regain our Portuguese heritage, whether it's through learning the beautifullanguage, visiting the country or simply justsnacking on a mouth-watering Prego roll. So, what will YOU be doing to stay true to yourPortuguese heritage?

as próprias expectativas.

It is a joint responsibility, but itseems that most of our pleads and ideas forimprovement just fall on deaf ears in thegovernment.Being in the health profession myself, I havewitnessed first hand, the crumbling state inwhich we find our government hospitals at themoment. This in itself is a crime againsthumanity. Our poorest of the poor attend thesehospitals with the hope that someone will beable to heal them. We try our best with theresources that we have, but sometimes, it isnot enough and the system fails those who

have so much hope in it, the patients.Numerous letters have been written to headsof provincial health as well as national health. The answer: silence. This is the type ofleadership that we have, cowards who hidebehind their titles and would rather do anythingelse than do the job they were elected for.Their silence is deafening. To add to this already crumbling system, one ofour Doctors was brutally attacked and raped atPelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein in the earlyhours of 30 October while on duty. It has cometo a point where our hospital staff are not evensafe anymore. Despite the outcries fromnumerous heads of departments and requestsfor meetings to discuss this dire state ofemergency, our Head of Free State health onlycame to meet us on the 3 of November, 5 daysafter the incident took place. As a community of health professionals, wehave tried to work together with thegovernment to rid the health system of thiscrime against humanity, but to no avail. Nowthis same community is dealing with theshocking truth, that even rape and assault isnot enough to bring about change that willreally make a difference. If the hospital staffare not even safe anymore, then how can thepatients be safe within the hospital.Efforts have been made since the incident toimprove safety, but :a) these efforts are not good enough, andb) they should have started a long time ago.Our efforts as a community to bring aboutchange and a health care system that is safefor both personnel and patients and thatfunctions optimally for the patients, willcontinue. Our only hope is that our effort issupported by government and that this journeycan be a safe one for all.I urge all of you that have family and friendsworking within the government health system,to continue to fight for your safety in thehospitals, and to continue to put pressure onyour provincial leaders to make a change. Ionly pray that someone doesn't need to pay theultimate price before the government wakes upand listens to your pleads.
