joxwDear Fox People:Well there is so little to write from here, as all theperformers are out and I do not run much around.Tammy Wallenda got her divorce, but that is notwhat I wanted to tell you just something very funnyhappened to me their. She was at the courthouse infront of the judge and I got a phone call. "Sorry todisturb you, but this is the courthouse and Tammyneeds a withness to swear to that she is living herefor at least 6 month." Well, I told them that she ismy daughter and that this always was her home-Well they ask, Are you willing to swear to that. Itold them, Naturally. So they said, Well, we put youon the loutspeaker if that is OK with you. I saidsure. Next a voice came on asking me to raise myright hand and that I will say the truth and nothingbut the trush so help me God, I said yes and so itwent. After that I had to laugh at my self. Here I was on the phone and actual stood up andraced my hand, no one could see me. But that wasit. I never heard of something like that to do overthe phone. Did you? What the heck, all kinds offunny things always happen to me. Like the tune, itwas in the SOties, I went to town and was lookingfor Pennys Department store. Dick (RichardFaughnan) was with me. I could not find Pennysand Dick said, Honey, there is non here. I told himthere has to be one as there is one in every town.So I sloped the next man who walked by and ask,Pardon me sir, but do you Penneys here. The manreached in his pocket and pulled a few pennies out.Lucky Dick was with me and came to my aid andexplained to the man that I was from Europe andwas asking for Penney Department Store. Boy, wasI embarrest.Showfolks had its Social and as I was told it waslike allways a big sucsess. Lots of people and lotsof food. The Club served turkey and dressing andgravie. Norma Cristiani prepaired it I was told, butit was a pot luck, so there was lots of goodies there.Well we got nice rain here in Florida. We needed itand we all praid for it and it helped. Now our grass

is green again and the grass cutting is on again. Thegas prices going down very slowly. If this keeps upI guess I will get myself a bycicle again, as this ismuch cheeper to get around. And now I see they aregoing up already again, this was a short time to feelbetter.Rose Alexander is doing as well as to be expected. She is trying to get all her things back in order.Naturely, she misses Fay so very much, as he tookcare always of all the imported things. Gee Gee'sson is a great help to her. Rosie is like his aunt, asGee Gee and Rosie always were the best of friendsince their rodeo time. The vane Rosie had with Faywas just a little to big for her to handle and she wentout and exchanged it for a 2000 but a little smaller.Rosie is very bussy moving and sorting all the stuffout in her home. She also has their motor home forsale, but she is really doing a great job. I am veryprout of her.Now back to Mario Wallenda. He is determent todo the Sky Walk on the wire with his wheel chairand I am trying very hard to help him. This is hisdream and I like to have him be able to do it.I was told they are doing some kind of circus moviehere in town and Allan Hill and Tito Gaona wereask to be the advisers for this movie.Just got a call from Derick Rosaire and he told methat at his birthday party, all his children werepresent. Derick and wife Liza are at the presenttime with daughter Pamela in a park up north.Derick told me it was just great, just daughter Ellianwas unable to come as she has her riding schoolhere in Sarasota. Oh yes, his birthday was inAugust and he told me that he is over 39. Heenjoyes very much working with Tony the WonderHorse.Anna Delmonti gave me a call to day and told methat she had a terrible experiance. The night beforeshe heart a very loud knock on her door. Her dogswent wild, so she got up to find out what was goingon. There was that knock again. She ask, Who isthere and a mans voise answered, This is the police, open up. She said I will not and went quick to thepone and called the police (Continued on Page 5)

Memories ofToCack "Bros. Circus....Charley Cheer, born in pre-revolutionary Russia, came to this country as young boy. Like Lou Jacobsand Docky, he combines musical ability with hisclowning. Harry Dann designs his own colorfulcostumes and is the son of a St. Louis banker.Ginny Lowry, songstress, made her debut at age 8.Her home is in Joliet, Illinois. Bee Carsey, musicaldirector, lives in San Antonio. "Acts come and gowith our circus, but Barnie (Soldier) Longsdorf, oursuperintendent, stays on, year after year. He ranaway from his home in Illinois in his early teens, some 35 years ago, and has been handling circusprops and rigging ever since. The 1955 program I have is from Seattle and ranAugust 17-21 at the Civic Ice Arena. Greatdrawings of all the acts on the cover in color. Theclowns were Lou Jacobs, Rudy Docky, CharleyCheer and Chester & Joe Sherman. Running orderwas: Keller's Jungle Killers; the Pallamedes, trapeze; Barbette's Whirlgirls; Poly Orea's SpitzDogs; the Merkys, horizontal bars; the Sikorskas, aerial; Harold Barnes, tight wire; Cilly Feindt, withher Lippizaner, Pasha; Ernie Wiswell, tin lizzie;Fedi-Fedi, dancing doll duo; Spangleland; BesalouBaby Elephants with Mac & Peggy MacDonald andBaby Opal; Ostermaier's Goats; Rolando, balancing; Roland Tiebor's Seals; the Chaludis, head balancing; Freya Josse, trapeze; Barbette'sAerialovelies; Melitta & Wicons, perch pole;Klauser's Bears with Goldilocks, Herta; DagenhamGirl Pipers and Barbette's Scotch & Circus. The Ringmaster was Ross Paul. The baby elephantswere Mary, Jean, Milly, Betty, Kathy and Opal. When John Tiebor took up the training of seals60-odd years ago, he stared a trend that madeTonawanda, NY, the sea lion capital of the showworld. Roland, one of 4 sons who joined him, hasfollowed in the family tradition. Penny is the star ofthe troupe, performing the "muscle grind."There is a photo of Chester & Joe Sherman withtheir dog, Lucky, 12, and he has been a troupersince early puppyhood! His father was a

somersaulter and his mother a wire-walker withHaag's Canines. He was adopted by the Shermansat age 3 weeks. Chester was a tight-wire performerbefore he took up clowning 35 years ago. Chesterwrote "On Being A Clown." "Clown! No one but aclown knows what that word really means; Heplays the part of sacrifice through life's fast-changing scenes, He makes laughter out of sorrowin this world of care and strife and gains it bygiving up the dearest things in life.Even a clown must serve his country as off to warhe goes, Leaving behind his mask of white andending where God only knows. A clown gives hisbest, his all, he bravely plays his part, Yet all heearns in life's returns is often a broken heart. But it makes no difference, as you and I both know,When he hears his Master's voice cry out, On withthe show!" He leaves his cares behind, and hisvoice will loudly sing, For he knows that happinessawaits him within the sawdust ring."The 1957 program is from Oakland, California, running May 18-26. JSand Manias daughter and told her what was goingon. Jorlanda told her just to stay put and she will beright over with the two Bulgarian boys who livingin her house. In minutes, they arived there and alsoother police. Then she opened. The police manyelled at her because she did not open the doorright away and told her that he had complains fromthe neighbors that her dogs are constantly barking. She told them That were not my dogs. Then thepolice man found out that he had gone to the wrongcorner house. It was not on Fruitville, it was onRingling Blvd. I thing this is just terrible, do'nt youagree?Good news from Eda Smina. Her husband came tothe tumor operation through great. They removedthe tumor and it was not canceres. She neededdeperatly someone to drive her semi to the nexttown and Jimmy Fossett came to there aid. Goodthat there are still some old timers around who areable to help.Nina Unus is retiring again, for how many days Ido not kno but she always gets called back from thedoctor and like I said before, she never lerned theword NO.Sad Notices: We lost an other great person, RudyBundy. He spent the last few years in a nursinghome. There was a memorial at a funeral home andthen every one showed up a Showfolks for horsd'oeuvres and to speak with the family. Rudy wasat one time a band leader here at the Lido Casinoand was for many years an official on the RinglingCircus. Rudy was a very genorous person andloved by many. I will miss him.The other dear person we lost was Emestin ClarkBear. She suffered for quite a few years onAltsimers and then she slowly went down hill. PoorParly had to go in to intensive care at the hospital. Those two were about the most loving couple I eversaw. They just lived for each other and therechildren. Last I heard Parly is getting a little better, but the few strokes he had left him in a wheelchairand he is unable to talk. Ernestine was know in our

business as a great bareback rider on the Ringlingshow and also her whole family were greatperformers, they are here in the Ring of Fame.Parley was a great actor you could see him for awhile allmost on all the shows on TV. He wasperforming untill he had his first stroke.Just as I was finished telling you that Hansini wason the sick list, I got the sad news that he did notmake it. Hans real name was Hans Klose. He camefrom Berlin, Germany and was at one time workingfor the Frielanis bycicle act.Hans came home to see his doctor but time haspast. It was to late for him. He died of lung canser. It had already gone in to his brain, so there wasnothing more to do for him. Hans was a very nicequiet person. For quite some years now he workedwith his kids, young Hansi. We hope the familywill find pease in knowing that there are many whochare there sadnes. May God give them peace. As I was told Gunther Gable William is doing OK.He had some treatments after the surgery and is upand around. I know we all wish him a speedyrecovery.I believe you all know that Stenka, sister of ManiaKaiser past away a few months ago and shortlyafter that Mania also lost her brother, so she justtook off and went for six weeks to her former homein Chekoslovakia and is back home now.Cha Cha Meluzzi is sufering with bronkitus andhopefully will be back up and around soon.Andy Anderson is hubbeling around as his oneknee got real bad and his foot on the other side isvery swollen from a possible brake 2 months ago.Cathie Scott is not doing to well. She is back in herhause with husband Geroge, but I was told shehardly can make it out of bed.Warner Guerera is doing remarkely well. I saw himthe other day and he told me that he slowly isgetting feelings back in his legs. This is it for this time.

Lots of Love and May God Bless You All.Your Fox ~

Tossing Of Our Circus friendsAlbert "Shorty" Sharp spent more than 50 of his 82years caring for circus elephants. Albert died May12 of heart failure while traveling with the circus inWisconsin. His body was frozen so his friendscould attend his funeral when the circus took abreak from the road. He had no living relatives."For over 50 years, Albert Sharp dedicated his lifeto getting up early in the morning, taking care ofthe elephants and getting his cup of coffee," saidcircus owner, George Garden, who delivered theeulogy for his longtime employee. The 4' 7" Albertcame to work as an elephant handler for Garden'sfather about 25 years ago and stayed on ascaretaker at the circus WQ in Springfield, Mo.About 200 people attended the memorial service onAugust 12.I I I I M I I I I I I I I I I I t I I M I I I I I I I I I I I I M I I I I I I I I I I I I M I I

AL'EXAND'E'RBy John W. Beard

A number of years ago, during a visit to theRingling Circus, I observed a young flyer. Frank ].Walter, front door and benefactor of the ClydeBeatty Circus, said that he was on their show. Henoted that he was lefty. This was Fay Alexander.Fay played a major role in performing dangeroustricks in "The Greatest Show On Earth." Otherflyers of note were Willie Krause and Eddie Kohl. They appear briefly in the movie.Fay's triple was a feature of later editions of thePolack Western Unit of the Circus. I always madeit a point to visit Fay during CFA meetings. He wasone of the great flyers of our time. Today, sadly, hewill be sorely missed.I I I I I I I I M I I I I I I I M M I M I I I I I I I M I I I I I M I I I I I I I I I I I I

Priceless Memories Of A FriendBy Bobby Gibbs

Hans Klose, a wonderful father, friend and longtime circus performer, has gone on to the big lotleaving a very talented circus family to carry on hisname, son Hans, Jr., daughters Jamie Loter andGretchen, plus the beautiful Adele.I was one of those lucky enough to be counted as aclose friend for over 25 years. We shared the ups

and downs of the road; he helped me care for mywife, Rosa, during her illness; I watched his kidsgrow up (family.) How do you say good-bye to afriend and family member-you don't-because hewill always live in my memory and when I think ofhim, which will be often, I will smile and have awarm place in my heart, first for having knownhim. So, Hans is on the road to the lot where we areall headed; he got there first, ahead of us. I knoweach of you knew and respected him. Memories of To Cock 'Bros. Circus..Herbert Nielbock, Ludwig Fritsche and BernhardSchwark, from Germany. Herbert has beenperforming for more than 50 years, starting in 1930.Ludwig, who previously did a balancing act withhis sister, has been a partner since 1945 andBernhard was a high wire artist before joining theact in 1953.The Original Gutis are Erich Gutsche, daughter-in-law Elvira, her husband, Karlheinz (Charley),Walter Kitscnke, Gunther Ludwig and Erich's wife,Margarethe. A future partner is Heidemarie, 11year-old daughter of Charley and Elvira. The Fredonias do a Risley act, which means it hasfoot juggling as its basis. Alfred Fullgrapp, boss ofthe troupe, is known as the "kicker." He was 14when he joined a 9-people Risley troupe inGermany 21 years ago. After the war broke up thatact, Alfred started doing a juggling act alone in1942 and when he married, he & his wife Ellibecame a team. They joined out Dieter Havemannwhen they began their Risley act 12 years ago andthen Bernd (Bubbles) Gohlke, Alfred's cousin, andBernie Hartenstein joined. Daughter Ilona appearsalso with latest addition Hans Klose. (See Jenny'sColumn) "John F. Cuneo Jr., desiring somethingentirely new in wild animal acts, began a projectthat was two years in the planning and took morethan a year to train. Cheerfully undaunted by theconsuming hatred of leopards for anything canine, young Cuneo assembled 8 leopards, thenintroduced into the arena 8 half-breed wolves, across between the tundra wolf from Siberia and theGerman Shepherd. He further flaunted advice byadding a rare black panther to this fiendish array offang and claw. To make the act completelyunbelievable, he put a zebra in the act. But thecrowning touch of glory was the addition of thelovely and fearless Patricia Jamison, born inLeicester, England." If you haven't seen a photo ofthis group, please try to find one. You won't believeit. Now, about the Rose Gould Trio. Rose, trainedfrom childhood for the ballet, left the opera inVienna to become an aerialist. At the circus she met

Andre Pahin, a trapeze performer interned inVienna. Their 13-year-old son, Andre Jr., currentlyis not interested in a circus career. Blinded by theflash from the camera of a thoughtlessphotographer, Rose fell in May 1956 in SanFrancisco. A broken pelvis, 11 breaks in her leftarm and a smashed right elbow convinced herhusband and her doctors that she would never workagain. She didn't give up. Just weeks before herreturn to the circus, they learned their partner wasreturning to Paris. They found Hungarian-born BelaEzias to replace him. Among Barbette'sAerialovelies were Evelyn Kent, Kae Johnson,Joyce Breidenbach and Brenda Jones, BrendaBrysch, Dollye Lombard!, Diane Johnson, SharonMcFarland. Gorgeous costumes! The FlyingPalacios were brothers Jose, Raul and Lalo andsister Irma. Raul's German-born wife, Maria, appears in the production numbers. The Lacy Troupe consists of Laszlo Toth and wifeLucia, Barbara Storr, Doris Williams, MaureenLloyd and Sheila Bush, the only act to have 6globes on the incline. Though Laszlo & Lucia weremarried in Budapest, daughters Susan, 9, andDiana, 7, were born in England. Gene Randow wasborn in NY City soon after his parents arrived fromHungary. He served in the army in WWII and he ismarried to former aerial star, Vivian Nelson. JimmyDouglass, also served in the army, and is fromSaranac Lake, NY. His partner is Indiana-born ArtGallagher, who had been a rodeo clown. They have6 dogs in their troupe. Harold Simmons weighed 69pounds when, at 16, he became a circus acrobat inAustralia; 21 years later, he weighs 79 pounds. Hetook up clowning 9 years ago. Larry Benner hasbeen a musician, side show entertainer and clownfor 37 years. Al Ackerman joined an Arab tumblingact 61 years ago, at age 14, continued as an acrobatuntil 1952 and has since been a clown. Total time inshow business for the two: 98 years! They are bothnatives of Ohio. (To be continued. Next time, the1960 program with the Flying Alexanders and GeeGee Engesser's Siberian Huskies and AlaskanMalemutes!)

MEMORIES OF "SHORTY""By "BoBBy QiBBs

Our circus family is made up of stars, grand oldperformers and all but first, like a regular family, there are many, many others that make us a family. Not every great one was a performer, thousandsserved & loved the circus and worked at their job tosee the show got down the road. And like they say, behind every successful man is a successfulwoman, the same can be said for performers in thering. The dedicated people that travel, put it up &down, clean it, paint it and get it over the road, dayafter day, outside the ring. My friend, and he was afriend, Albert "Shorty" Sharp has gone to the biglot to help up there for awhile. Shorty's service washeld August 12 in Willard, at the Garden WQ, hishome for the last few years. He was as well knownto circus people as any trainer. He worked for RoyBush, John Cline, Bobby Gibbs, George Gardenand many more. Shorty was a true circus man, thruand thru and will be missed by our whole circusfamily. He was a friend and family member to me.Rest in peace and take care of those elephants up inHeaven till we see you again. Bobby and Rosa

Elephant Shorty's Last RideBy Mike Cecere

Greetings friends, today we are going to take a fewmoments to remember an Elephant Man, Albert"Shorty" Sharp, better known to his legion offriends as "Shorty" or "Elephant Shorty." Hepassed on May 12, 2000 but had sort of been in"cold storage" until his circus family with theCarden organization could gather with other friendslocally near the circus home base in Springfield,Mo. to give him a fine send off, in fact, probably asI'm writing this Saturday afternoon, August 12.For those folks that didn't have the pleasure ofknowing Shorty, I can tell you he was a hell of anElephant Man. No, he never trained Elephants, went to the wild and captured Elephants, wasn't ascientist, researcher, was never on the Jack HannaShow, but you always knew where to find him, with the Elephants. He wasn't a Veterinarian, but sure would tell you ifthere was something wrong with an Elephant thatneeded attention. He was very observant and withall his many years with Elephants, 7 days a week hewould be able to spot problems that many youngermen would miss, even trainers. He wasn't the guy who got all dressed up inrhinestone suits and received the audiences' cheers,he was the guy who cleaned up after the Elephants, made sure they got feed, water, a comfortable placeto sleep and did the best he could to see to it. If youleft Shorty in charge of Elephants, you knew darnwell that when you came back, he'd be right there. And he was a worker, for a wiry little guy just fourfoot seven inches tall, he would work men six foottall and half his age into the ground. He workedwith some of the best and brightest in our business.Despite my historical records, I can't give you ayear by year rundown, but here are somehighlights. He was assistant to the irrespressable Capt. RoyBush and the Hunt Bros. Circus Elephants, Ibelieve from around the time Legendary TrainerLouie Reed broke the younger set of HuntElephants, in the 50s. I know he was with Capt.

Roy on Hunt and went along when the Bartok'sbought the show and Elephants. Capt. Roy was oneof those old timers who dressed military style withGarrison cap and all and he made sure Shorty got auniform too. They were snappy dressers aroundthere. I know he also worked for the famous trainerJohnny Cline who had his own Elephant and libertyacts doing Shrine dates until the mid-70s whenCline dissolved the act. Around that time (tho Iprobably will be corrected by someone with morehistorical facts) he joined the Carden family towhom he gave decades of dedicated service to.Even as his age began to creep up on him, theGardens created the less physically demandingposition for him as Winterquarter's Supt. and sawto his every need out of respect and appreciationfor his many years of service. Circuses are a lot likefamilies and Shorty was an important part of it.They could go on tour safe in the knowledge thatthey had someone who cared about their animalsand equipment as if it were his own. You can't puta price on dedication like that. My own experiencesaround Shorty came in the mid 80s, a few weekswhen I toured with a mixed lion and tiger act that Iwas training for someone whle on tour with GeorgeCarden Circus.Shorty was assistant to my good friend, MasterElephant Trainer, Joe Frisco, Jr. They kept thoseElephants spotless! The next year I was trainingsome exotic hoofstock for the show in SpringfieldWQ and Shorty was very helpful helping moveanimals around and helping me train a green crewof grooms. An experienced Animal Man likeShorty was a real blessing as he had done and seenso much and coming from the old school, you doyour best to teach the new guys so they too can dotheir best. That way, both the animals and peoplebenefit and the show rolls smoother. And Shorty had an endless supply of entertainingstories about Elephants and trainers, some wereinformative and others just fall down funny! I wasone of the priveledged few to have been sent aninvitation to his farewell services to which I'd liketo thank the Carden Family & their Staff.

And I'd like to thank them for giving ElephantShorty a memorable last ride, for Shorty may havebeen a small man in stature, but he had a heart asbig as an Elephant! Farewell Elephant Shorty,Sleep Well! God Bless America!

Head Bros. Circus By Gary ThomsonOn June 24th, at 9 AM, Ted Ram and I left London,Ontario for the 3 hour drive to Troy, Michigan andthe home of Ken & Lisa Head who are, once again, hosting the annual presentation of Herb Head'sHead Bros. Circus, a 1" scale masterpiece of circusmodeling. Set up starts about 6:30 AM with 2shows presented before tear down in late eveningunder the light standards on the flat car sidings. This year 1 Vi hours of rain in the early morningslowed the set up down but things were just aboutcomplete on the 60'x75' lot by noon. The day turned out to be fairly sunny withoccasional threats by passing storm clouds. Thesecond show, usually held at 8 PM, was moved upto 6 PM so that an early tear down could beattempted before we reached the border. Hopefully, the Heads were able to complete the tear downbefore the bad weather set in.When we arrived at the Head's home in thebeautiful suburbs of Troy, we easily spotted thehouse with its 4'xl6' red & blue on white bannerannouncing that the Head Bros. Circus was ondisplay. There was a large contingent of familymembers putting the final touches on the show. Wewere greeted by Lisa Head, Herb's daughter-in-law, who gave me (a first timer) the complete tourof the show while Ted (9 times) was brought up todate on the newest additions by Herb. There are approximately 50 wagons on the show;14 cage wagons, including a hippo den and agiraffe wagon, 8 tab wagons, including 4 whichhave been gold-leafed over the past 3 years, 2Mack "Bulldog" trucks and the balance in workwagons of every description. The Show's tentsincluded the Big Top, which is 140' with 3-50'middles (approx. 24' in length), the menagerie tent, the side show tent, 2 horse tops (one for ring stock

& the other for draft horses), a dressing top, acookhouse and a dining top. All were fullyaccessorized. On one side of the lot there were 4siding tracks with a full complement of circus railequipment. There were 12 flatcars, 7 coaches and 5stock cars (3 for draft horses, 1 for ring stock and 1for elephants). The coaches and stock cars hadhinged roofs to allow for storage of the circusequipment. The flatcars were all loaded as the realones with the wagons being pulled into positionand choked in place. The loaded flats, along withthe coaches and stock cars are all moved back toHerb's house in a Chevy Suburban.Almost everything on the show is animated, verydetailed and imaginative. All the people & animalsare hand carved and painted by Herb. Each isunique from the lady bending over a tub of waterwashing her hair to the seal in the Big Top,balancing a ball. Every time you walk around thelot you see something different. Ted's been doing itfor 9 years and still sees new things. The beauty isin the small details; the scenes of everyday life onthe circus that make it all seem real. It's very hardto describe everything that we saw on the show. Wecan only encourage everyone to attend Herb's nextpresentation of this annual extravaganza. It is heldon the same weekend in June of each year, rain orshine. It is indescribable. You have to see it toexperience this 'circus in miniature.'For more information on Head Bros. Circus, seeTed Ram's article in the Sept.-Oct, 1991 issue ofthe Little Circus Wagon. After writing this, Herbwrote, "As for our tear down, we had the showabout half torn down before the rain resumed (thecrew inside the Big Top stayed dry until the topwas dropped). Had to repair a tear in the Big Topcanvas and also repair 1 flatcar that dropped onewheel truck. But it is all moved back and storedhere in quarters." Herb was preparing to head forBaraboo and the Milwaukee Circus Parade that heparticipates in every year. (Thanks, Gary.)

Don't forget to bring any old photos you might wantto sell to Back Yard to the CHS Convention! Thanks.

TO CIRCUS FRIENDS, EVERYWHERESpeaking from experience, I've found that circus peoplearen't always the best correspondents. Show schedules, constant travel, set-up and practice demand a lot of time.In addition, personal obligations that we all deal with ona daily basis, such as grocery shopping or doing laundry, repairing props and wardrobe or servicing vehicles musttake priority. Unfortunately, writing letters to family, friends and peers more than likely tops the list when itcomes to good intentions that fall by the wayside. Daysturn into weeks, weeks turn into months and before youknow it, months become another year. Once in a while, something wakes you up to the fact that time needs to betaken for this sort of thing. The past few issues of Back Yard and Circus Report havehelped open my eyes to how time gets away from us. Fartoo much time had passed between writing letters to anumber of friends. After a fair amount of procrastinationthroughout the summer, I finally made it a point to catchup with some correspondence. When I posted the firstfew letters, I picked up my weekly CR from the P.O.Box. I was dumbfounded to read the obituary for one ofthe people that I had just sent a letter to, only minutesbefore. Needless to say, I wish I hadn't taken me so longto write! It certainly didn't seem to have been that longsince we last touched bases. In our many years on the road with countless shows,we've met a lot of people and made a lot ofacquaintances. Many of these acquaintances havedeveloped into strong friendships as time progressed. And, although we don't have an opportunity to see manyof these friends with any certain regularity, when we doit feels as if we were just with them last week. When wemove on, for all we know, years may pass before wehave the pleasure of their company again.Several years ago in the men's dressing room, whileplaying a Shrine date in Minot, North Dakota, Iremember buffalo man Bunky Boger saying (to no one inparticular) that "a good day is measured by what youhave at the time...a blue sky, a nice lot, a hot shower anddecent electricity..what else can you ask for?" I believehe nailed it right on the head! I haven't seen Bunky inyears now, (nor have I written to him, for that matter!)but I still think about him every now and then. Thisbusiness isn't just about money, recognition or our timein the spotlight, although we all need and want all ofthese things. When it all comes down to it, this businessis about the people along the way.

To all of our friends, fellow performers and circus fanswho have lent a hand, passed along priceless experience, shared a spare bedroom, provided a home cooked mealand so many other things over the years, thank you! It'soften easy to take friendships for granted, but you arenever forgotten. To the families of absent friends, nowon the big lot, rest assured. ..your loved ones are fondlyremembered. Ihad the opportunity to visit the boss clown David Soloyeand other clowns at the circus. Certainly theAir Conditioned city. I will be seeing the Ringling circusagain when it comes to Denver in early October. Believeit or not the circus will be playing at the new PepsiCenter for a few days and then take a day off and moveup the track to the old coliseum that was built in the 40s,a distance perhaps no more than 5 miles. In fact, Iwouldn't be surprise if the trains will be parked by theold Coliseum and the animals and equipment be broughtto the Pepsi Center. THE fltTCH FILESBy Mike Cecere

Okay folks, in this issue we'll take on the holy ofholies in circus movies, "The Greatest Show OnEarth." This masterpiece of huge scale was abrainchild of movie master Cecil B. DeMille, whichpreserved for all time the incredible scope and sizeof the RBBB show in the early 50s when it moveda virtual tent city by rails on a daily basis. Many great circus acts, then in their prime, appeared in the movie along with top Hollywoodstars, chief among them Charlton Heston as thecircus manager, "Brad." The movie remains aclassic despite being filmed decades ago and isoften shown on cable television today. As an animal trainer, of course, the animal acts arethe main interest in my viewing. The astoundingAlberto Zoppe riding act, highly trained libertyhorses, Albert Rix, master trainer, with his hugebear act fresh from the Hagenbeck Zoo inGermany, working in one of the early net arenas. That great man is still highly active in the trainingof bears of all types with his wonderful family. And lets not forget the Elephants. The large RBBBherd, which is several times bigger overall todaywith two permanent facilities for the breeding andretirement of the jolly jumbos. The latter madepossible by the current owners, the Feld Ent. group, who following the dreams of the great showman,Irvin Feld, provide for the Elephants who haveworked so hard for the show.Elephants, both working on the lot and a verydramatic scene in the show, are the standoutattractions in the film. Great cameo appearances byElephant Supt. Arky Scott and his loyal crew!Tho the movie was the vision of Mr. DeMille, theday to day filming in both Sarasota WQ and on theroad tour was made possible by the hard work ofcircus General Manager, Art Concello and his topaides, Willis Lawson and Frank McClosky, withtheir highly trained crews. They made that hugecircus move! This film is a must-see for anyonewho loves the circus and wants to see the biggest

/3

and best there was on the road. Another movie thatwas made in the late 50s, with a similar plot, starring the great actor Victor Mature was "The BigCircus." This film, a total Hollywood production, featured some of the best performers of the day andtho a somewhat fictional plot, is well worth seeingfor the circus stars alone. A very enjoyable film. Now though, "The Greatest Show on Earth" iscommercially available in places, I would urge youto check with Circus Video King, Mr. JimRidenour, as I'm sure he has fine copies of itreadily available at a more reasonable price thancommerical outlets and is the main source forharder to find classics, such as "The Big Circus."Tell Jim, that you saw it here! God Bless America.

***NEWS FROM HAWAII By Richard Via***The other day I was talking with friends aboutcircus and show business friends and I wasreminded of a nice story. One Easter, Kurt Kazner, who was playing Uncle Max in "The Sound ofMusic," which 1 was stage managing, invited me toEaster brunch. I explained that I would like tocome, but that I had invited Gerald Soules and hisparents to my apartment for brunch. Kurt insistedthat I bring them too. After Mass we went to theEast side to Kurt's place. When we walked in Kurtgreeted us most graciously and ushered us into theliving room. The Soules nearly fell over for EthelMerman, Arlene Francis and Martin Gable weresitting there. Merman was a super star on Broadwayand had a slight reputation of being very difficult attimes. Before Jerry or his parents could expresstheir surprise and delight in meeting her, as well asthe others, Miss Merman began with, "How did youever learn to do your act?" And to his mother,"How can you stand to watch your son do such adangerous act? Oh, I don't think that I could watcha son of mine risk his life like that." Miss Francisand Mr. Gable joined in turning the focus fromthem to the Soules family. I don't think that theconversation ever got to the Broadway and TVstars. It was beautiful. So, no one can ever knockEthel Merman if I am around. (Thanks, Dick)

A TJCWS fROM MOZART^4"By Mo^o-rt Valentine/ 4^*

MEOW everyone, welcome back to my column. Ihave a lot of great news this time! The ProspectPark Wildlife Center in Brooklyn has a newHamadryas baboon, a male born June 1 to motherMatara and father Simen. Matara was found inChicago tied to a porch. Officials believe she hadbeen kept as a pet & abandoned. After 3 years, sheis an accepted member of the troop and an excellentfirst-time mother.Panda baby, Hua Mei, at the San Diego Zoo,celebrated her 1st birthday August 21 with a cake!It consisted of crystal clear distilled water andbamboo fronds, frozen into a 2-layer sculpted icecake-a cool treat in the middle of summer! Thegiant pandas love ice. The first 5000 guests at theZoo signed a giant birthday card for Hua Mei and itwill be sent to staff at the Wolong Giant PandaPreserve in China, where her parents once lived. You can see more at www.sandiegozoo.com.The Cincinnati Zoo has announced the names ofthe two new polar bears, recently acquired from theDenver Zoo. Imaq and Sedna, the 19-month-oldbrother & sister respectively, were chosen amongmore than 16,000 entries that flooded the Zoo fromall over the country. The two joined the Zoo's twoother polar bears, Danny & Rizzo, last month atthe new Kroger Lords of the Arctic exhibit. Imaqmeans water and Sedna is an Inuit figure who is themother and ruler of all sea creatures.More news from the San Diego Zoo: On July 5,Tembo, a 29-year-old African elephant, and herkeepers demonstrated to Zoo guests the benefits ofteam work. They engaged in a routine training andenrichment session where Tembo was asked, thenrewarded, for engaging in behaviors such aspresenting her feet, mouth & trunk for inspectionand retrieving sticks. Following the session, Temboand her exhibit mates, Devi, a 23-year-old Asianand Sumithi, a 33-year-old Asian, were treated tothe opportunity to forage for apples in the pool.Sounds like a lot of fun to me! And for the visitors.

A great headline about the Woodland Park Zoo inSeattle. "How do you baby-proof for a 200-poundtoddler?" Chai is due to give birth to a female calfin November. The 5 keepers have an 8-page list ofsuggestions to baby proof the elephant compound, including closing off all the "nooks & crannies"that could trap a curious 200-pound baby. Somezoos have limited or "protected" contact, meaningbars and barriers come between keepers and theanimals. But Woodland Park's keepers trade therisk of being in with their elephants for the mutualreward of free contact. Chai's exercise program haspaid off. She'd lost 88 pounds at her last weighing. She had gained 1,500 pounds in all since she camehome pregnant 19 months ago. Keepers worriedthat it meant the calf was getting too big for a safebirth. *Penny, an African elephant, left the VilasPark Zoo in Madison, Wise. August 15 for hertemporary home at the Columbus Zoo. Her newhome will be at the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia,South Carolina, where they are working on a newarea. The USDA and the National Zoo Assn. foundVilas' facilities inadequate and the USDA orderedthe elephants moved if the conditions weren'timproved. Zoo spokeswomen Patty Peters said,"She's doing well. They just needed someone tohold her-and we have plenty of room." Penny willjoin Belinda and Belle, at the Zoo's 41,000 sq. ft.elephant building, billed as the largest indoorelephant area in the country. Winkie, 34, the Asianelephant at the Vilas Zoo, will leave for TheElephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tenn. betweenSept. 9 and 20 and will have six new friendswaiting for her! You go girls! *Some sad news fromthe National Zoo in Washington, DC. Zoo officialseuthanized Nancy, a 46-year-old African, August 22after her health suddenly deteriorated and began refusingmedication that was keeping her stable. She arrived at theZoo in 1956 from East Africa. She was the matriarch ofthe herd. Shanthi, Ambika and Ton! were outside intheir yard frolicking as usual-tossing hay, rolling in thedirt and carrying tires in their trunks. Shanthi is pregnant& due next year. Zoo officials don't plan to replaceNancy but will focus on Asian elephant reproduction. That's all for this time. Meow for now, Mozart!
