Narada Michael Walden -The Nature OfThings- Warner BrothersWalden combines his skill as ex -drummer ofthe Mahavishnu Orchestra, Wheather Reportand producer for Sister Sledge in his debut forWarner. The album could do well on all radiolevels with tracks like Gimme Gimme Gimme(the MOR duet with Patti Austin), That's TheWay It Is (commercial disco), the main stream

qualities of Lift It Up and the cheerful reggaeWear Your Love (with Olympic track star CarlLewis doing the backing vocals).

The Blasters - Hard Line- Slash/WarnerTry the Blasters, a true American -made R&Rband. With their exciting mix of boogie, blues,Tex-Mex and C&W, it is about time, they getthe radio response they deserve. With a more'compressed' sound (a necessary soundquality these days to get played on US radio)radio should consider tracks like ColoredLights (written by John Cougar Mellencamp),Trouble Bound, the cajun Hey Girl and RockAnd Roll VVill Stand. Authentic sounds on yourradio!

VideovieW5We received a few questions about our weekly Euroclips listing. Thisrotation chart indicates the video broadcast of no less than 52 EuropeanTelevision programs. It includes the known nationwide pop programssuch as Top Of The Pops (UK), Formel Eins (Germany), Toppop andCountdown (Holland), Tocata (Spain) and Deejay Television (Italy), butalso international cable and satellite shows like Music Box and SkyTraxas well as all kind of other programs carrying music videos. Countriesincluded are Scandinavia, Germany, U.K, Germany, Benelux, France, Italy,Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg and Portugal. Extra points aregiven for broadcast on the major Nationwide TV Shows. Euroclipsalways includes the broadcast lists of the current weeks programs so it isreally up-to-date.The battle over payment for video rights between Television andRecordcompanies is continuing, especially in France, Switzerland andBelgium. In France the so-called News programs are now allowed toshow music videos as is Canal Plus, who have agreed to pay for eachshowing. It will be interesting to watch this situation and to see if Frenchartists/songs will gain in popularity as obviously French artists are moreavailable for the live -programs. In Switzerland the recordindustry doesnot seem to be in a hurry to bring their financial demands down as bothSkyTrax and Music Box are now covering the major Swiss cities so therestill is more videomusic on the air than ever before.Heaviest rotation on the U.S. MTV channel will undoubtedly be given tothe USA for Africa clip and we expect this video to get plenty ofattention in Europe too. JOHN PARR's video Naughty Naughty, which forso many weeks was heavily featured on MN should start screening nowaround Europe as Phonogram is releasing the single and album. Thealbum of this English artist was one of the most constant new climbers inAmerica over the past 3 months. Apart from continuing to direct theExtrature Bremen TV show, famous German TV Producer MikeLeckebusch also breathes new life in his wellknown TV showMusikladen. Mike is now producing the show freelance from theamazingly equipped studios at his home and it will include videos.Although the show will be broadcast regionally there are already someheavy German areas committed as well as Swiss TV, so it looks like it willonce again become a top rated show. Incidentally Mike will be using ourEuropean Top 100 throughout the program. Picture Music Internationalis filming the successful PHIL GOWNS worldtour for later use with shotstaken in Europe, Australia, Japan, USA and Canada. A picturesque clip isorganised for tribal sounding track Take Me Home with shots from all theworld tourist centers like the Eiffel Tower etc.New videos to watch: THE NAILS just released their new clip for Let It AllHang Out, directed by Francis Delia. A010GUIDE

Euro Radio will certainly welcome Clapton'slong awaited new album Behind The Sun.Produced by workaholic Phil Collins (apartfrom 3 tracks produced by Ted Temp!emanand Lenny Waronker), radio can work withtracks like the steady and solid rocker She'sWaiting, the layla' phrasing in the singleForever Man, the lazy and laid-back NeverMake You Cry (with romantic guitar work ofMister Slowhand) and Same Old Blues (indeed, them good old blues again). Already almostfinished 8 months ago, Warner Bros took along time releasing this Ip.The Tubas' new album Love Bomb, aproduction of Todd Rundgren, is just been outand already getting masses of tips fromGermany. Lots is expected also from the newHoward Jones album Dream Into Action, another Rupert Hine production.Added to the European Airplay Top 50 are firstof all Nik Kershaw's Wide Boy, proving againKershaw's ability to write catchy and well -crafted popsongs, Shakin' Stevens' latestBreaking Up My Heart, Stephan Duffy's KissMe, another kiss from David Cassidy andFrench artist Michel Jonasz with his song LaBoite De Jazz. Bubbling under the Airplay Top50: China Crisis' latest Black Man Ray.(produced by Walter Becker from Steely Danfame). Who could give us the clue to what thissong reminds us of?Producer Robin Millar is very much in demand

these days. After earlier productions for Sade,Everything But... and recently The Kane Gang,he is now involved in two new productions;one for the soul -jazz band Working Week withtheir re -make of the Marvin Gaye classic innerCity Blues and secondly for a brandnewEnglish band called Fruits Of Passion. Theirdebut At ! Ever Wanted is one of those recordsthat immediately sticks into your mind, a solidcomposition and splendid vocals by SharonDunleavy. Give it a spin!

CLASSICAL MUSICWith the recent interest for American rock 'nroll (Los Lobos, Jason &The Scorchers, TheBlasters- see review section, ZZ Top and thereturn of John Fogerty) it is also interesting tosee that other musical styles other than directlyrelated to pop music, are making a return in thecharts. Who would have thought that after cooljazz (Sade, Everything But The Girl, etc.),acoustic folk (Aztec Camera), blues (e.g. AlisonMoyet's remake of the Billy Holiday ciassieThat Ole Devil Called Love) now even classicalmusic make people run to the shops! With thesuccess of the Amadeus movie, the demandfor Mozart's requiem is so big that retail canhardly handle the orders in some countries. Itwould be interesting to see which Europeanstations are actually programming classicalmusic amongst their daily pop material(Amadeus album is no. 54 in the Album chartsand charted in Belgium, France and Holland). We have added four new singles from localartists to our European Crossover list. Themost obvious one is Alphavilie's new single JetSet, a new recording of the album track byfamous remixer John 'Jellybean' Benitez.

Austrian band Opus is our second choice, whom we discussed last week already; andthe remaining two crossover candidatesinclude Dutch jump and jive band Gigantjeswith their cover from the mid Fifties Yaki TakiOowah!, a sort of Honeydrippers Volume Two(single is about to be released in the UK aswell); and Miko Mission, The World Is You, likelyto do well on the continent with its 'Vamos ALa Playa' chorus.Whitney Houston, the niece of DionneWarwick, has great chances to become thenewest Queen Of Soul. All At Once is abeautiful love song in which her breathtakingvoice shines like a diamond.

A NEW LIFTThe Isaac Hayes' classic Theme From Shafthas been giving a new lift by two versions bothcoming from the Benelux. There is one versionby Dutch band Eddy &The Soulband, while theother one is by Belgian group Van Twist.Over to some chart action now, a lot ishappening in the European Album Top 10:Jagger moves from 30 to 10, Alan Parsonsmoves 3 notches to no. 8 and Collins is new atno. i with a record that is exploding at retaillevel at the moment. Album entries for Bailey,Shakatak and Santana. The same Bailey is stillno, 1 in the European Top 100 Singles mainlydue to his No 2 in the UK and JermaineJackson streaks right into the Top 10 thisweek jumping from 11 to 3 (we must admitthat we never expected this song to chart thathigh). Other records with bullets includeFotonovela, Love And Pride, Breaking Up MyHeart (Shakin's latest), Material Girl and Let'sDance Tonight.

ABOUT THE CHARTSTHE EUROPEAN TOP 100 (SINGLES/ALBUMS):In many European countries one chart is 7,,,,,,gnised by themusic industry as the' OFFICIAL' hitparade and is thereforeused forthe compilation of the EUROPEAN TOP100. Howeverthere are other [Purifies where various Charts are in existenceand often equally important. For these countries we havecompiled a number of these charts into one representing thesales in that market. Each chart position for every country then receives, relevant toMat position, an equal points rating which is in turn multipliedby a factor determined through the latest known salespercentage of total singles (or album) sales which that countryholds in relation to the rest of Europe. There are differentpercentages for singles and albums. These figures are kindlyprovided on a regular basis by the industry -organisations suchas IFIR-BPI-Gallup-Deutsche Phonoverband etc. For theEUROPEAN TOP 100 SINGLES 25 charts are used from 16countries, for the EUROPEAN TOP 100 ALBUMS 20 chartsare used from 15 countries. Since the sales percentages of afew countries em too small to get their hits into the

EUROPEAN TOP 100 (provided these records are not chartedin any other territory), we are also printing a TOP S IN EUROPElist each week. The EUROPEAN AIRPLAY TOP 50 is compiled through all ourcorrespondents tips received this weekr)Records of the weekreceive extra points. The airplay lists of the airplay reportorganizations within some of the European countries are alsoused in the calculations, as well as playlists of major radiostations. ("Please note that not all received rips appear inEurotipsheet but they are all used for the calculation of theAirplay Top 50.THE EUROCLIPS UST shows the music -videos most aired ontelevision throughout Europe in the week prior to publication. Itincludes video-tv.prog rams and other I.v.shows partly usingvideo's from 14 European countries. For more detailed information on arty of the chart -systemsplease contact our chart department.

EU IPSHEET...*.THE SECOND YEAR !!!This 50th issue marks the start of our second year with many interesting new plans! There were plentyof industry people predicting a fast failure when we introduced our first EUROTIPSHEET issue back inMarch 1984. Many so-called 'experts' did not believe we could continue gathering information fromthe 18 European countries participating. But we are happy to have been able to prove them wrongand to move into a second year with plenty of improvements planned over the next few months. But ofcourse our success would not have been able without our correspondents; top media people from allcountries, who give us their weekly music tips and also plenty of advices. Thank you for your regularsupport!!!

NEW PLANSWe are planning to extend the informationwhich is presented weekly in Eurotipsheet.First of all we want to become more and morea news center for the European Media andtherefore need the help of all ourcorrespondents!) Please send us YOUR newson special programs, format changes, changesin personal, important happenings in yourmarket. It will all be used for our Media Cornerand your colleagues from other countries arevery interested to read about your news. Asyou will be able to see we are more and moreextending the number of pages of our BasicReport (16 instead of 12) enabling us topresent a number of new features. This hasalready started with the introduction of ourbiweekly Video News column next to theEuroclips rotation list.In the Video News column we talk about newvideos which become available forprogramming; interesting facts about videoproductions, video rights as well as new videotv programs in Europe. We will also continueand in fact extend our Spotlights on importantMedia people.

COMPACT DISC AND DANCE REPORT !Within a few weeks we will start a biweekly CDpage, concentrating on the programming ofCD's. There are already a number of EuropeanRadio Stations which carry interesting CDprograms both concentrating on the musicside as well as giving information. We plan tohave a CD recommendation list as well as newreleases and technical developments. So hereis once again: Correspondents!! give us yourCD News.We will start with a European Dance Report asalready announced earlier. This will talk aboutdanceable music suitable for both clubs andradio. Although radio formats in Europe are notas separated as in the USA, there mostly is aquite clear distinction between MOR and themore progressive pop/rock programs. Dancemusic plays an important role on both formatsand we intend to spotlight dance records andprogramming.

A PLATFORM FOR AN EXCHANGE OF IDEASOur thanks to those who have already returnedthe questionaire which we sent a few weeksago. It helps us to improve EUROTIPSHEETand please rest assured that yourrecommendations and suggestions are takenvery seriously and will be used in the nearfuture if technically possible.Reading those questionaires returned to us, itwas very clear that our Euro Tip Page isstudied very well by our correspondents andmany use it to compile their airplay lists. It isour aim to keep on improving this page andeven reserve more space for EuropeanCrossover records; to establish anIndependent Route (more attention to

Europe's independent labels... thank you AxelSommerfeld..) and to give more guide lineswhere to find those records.Apart from that, more features are to beexpected on European radio stations, thepeople behind it and their style ofprogramming. For those of you who have not yet returned thequestionaire please do so as soon as possible, your comments are appreciated and it is theonly way to make EUROTIPSHEET yourmagazine, the only way to use it as a platformfor an exchange of ideas, music and programs.During the last few weeks we have againadded a number of correspondents fromamongst the important radio and tvpersonalities in France, Germany, U.K.,Scandinavia and Belgium.A warm welcome to Radio Gong, the newcable station from Munich, Germany. In factRadio Gong is the first private radio inGermany that was created upon thefoundations of a magazine, inithis case, Gong, the actual weekly TV guide (also published inAustria, Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium,Switzerland and France). Walter Freiwald is theprogram director and Radio Gong hasamongst 4s d.j.'s people coming from RadioMl, Radio Xanadu and many correspondentsfrom abroad (including the popular Americand.j. Rick Dees, who presents every Sunday .evening from 6 till 9 o'clock the American Top -40 in his program, entitled Die AmericanischeNacht). We are happy to include Polskie Radio inWarsaw, the national Polish radio and ourcorrespondent, the disco and radio d.j.Bogdan Fabianski, who plays the InternationalTop 10 Singles every Saturday afternoon. Asyou can see, the type of records that areplayed on the national channel do not differthat much from other European stations.Added to our list of correspondents is also thelocal Danish pop station Radio Viborg, withSilo Hedvig Nielsen as the station managerreporting to us on a regular basis. Speakingabout Denmark, the recently establishedCopenhagen based Channel 2 provides amusic service similar to that of the US station -

MTV. And although working on anexperimental basis until April '86, the stations'music video outlets is already beginning to bea serious competitor for the national televisionnetwork, Denmarks Radio.Other new correspondents include GerardSadden, who's head of music for Couleur 3 in

LONDON CALLINGby Howard MarksAs i struggle to my typewriter with a temperature of 102, and a bout of flumaking me feel like nothing on earth. I try and convince myself that I mustcarry on, otherwise the editor wich be tearing his hair out. So I mustapologise for a shorter than usual column and probably to the effects ofcountless medicines and tablets, a slightly incoherent column too.Anyway, enough of that, let's have some news now. Well done for CBSfor sticking with the excellent Dead Or Alive single for so long, almost fivemonths since it's release to it's position at the top of the charts. Welldone also to 10 Records, for their strong believe in Stephen "Tin Tin"Duffy, although I'm not personally very keen on the records; LamborghiniRecords could have a smash on their hands with the very Euro-Popsingle Bang The Drum Ali Day by Jonas. Already known to many of you inFrance, Jonas is only eleven and already a star in that country. His dad bythe way, is Mike Hurst, who was a pop singer in the early 60's, and a verysuccesful record producer since then. The new single from Alison Moyet is picking up very strong airplay, and isvery different from her three previous solo singles for CBS. The PhilipRally single is just wonderful, and should be No. 1. forever. Look out forthe new single from Working Week, which is a re -work of the old MarvinFayeclassic Inner City Blues, and again this is a great single. FortF185 ' ose of you who are seriously into religion, I think that you may be

u o by a band with the name of The Jesus & Mary Chain. Somepeople here like them, quite why, I haven't worked out yet!Congratulations to singer Kirsty MacColl, and her husband recordproducer Steve Lillywhite on the birth of their son James Patrick, and alsoto Captain Sensible and his lady, Rachel of the Dolly Mixtures on the birthof their son, who will be named Fred.New boss at Radio One Johhny Beerling, was a guest on the JaniceLong show recently, answering questions from listeners. And while atRadio One, good news at last, and also especially for me, because I'mgreat fan of the music. From March 31st there will be a reggae musicshow. now starting regularly and hosted by a lady known as Miss P.

The Media Conference which recently took place in Mainz wherepoliticians, program directors, radio editors and other people talkedabout the future cooperation between private and government ownedradio and tv, resulted in opposite views. The CDU (Christian DemocraticParty) ruled regions are very much in favour of legalization of the privateradios and cables whereas the SPD (Socialist Party) seems to hesitateand to regard private radios as serious competitors to the governmentowned stations.A funny thing happened in the south of Germany on Radio 89, a privatecable connected radio station; one of the jocks had a woman guest whoby some super national powers taped an interview with the deceasedfllmstar Romy Schneider (hearing lines like "...It wasn't suicide, I wasmurdered..."). As a result the telephone lines of the station were blockeddue to continious calls and the whole event was covered heavily by the'yellow' press in Germany.More serious now, Radio Dortmund, a local cable radio and tv station, starts its program on the first of June 1985. The TV channel KabelfunkDortmund, starts off on the 12th of May, parallel to the elections in theNord Rhein Westfalen area.A recent investigation revealed that Baden Baden station SWF 3, spendsmost of its radio time to concert, book and movie reviews in comparisonto WDR 2, NDR 2 and BR 2.Some moves: Wolfman Kramartz previously with Deutschland Funkmoved to WDR as dj and program editor while Herman Stuempertmoved from the Saarlandische Rundfunk (SR) to a free private radio

RADIO GA GA ?The first ever UK Music Radio Conference asorganized by The Radio Academy (based inBristol) which was held in London, touched upon many interesting subjects. PaulGambaccini, one of UK's leading musicwriters and broadcasters, gave his personalassesment of what music radio should be. Inhis own words, a deejay should be able totranslate his enthousiasm for music, hisintelligence and his ability to speak to time, onto his audience. He should be able to create"a world" in order to be part of people'simagination. As an example he played afamous Orson Welles presentation on theinvasion of creatures from Mars which wasbroadcast in the Fifties and this caused such ashocking reaction in America with peoplerunning out of their homes onto the streets.Paul used it as an example of how deejays canexert a tremendous influence on people's lives.Tony Hale, head of music for Capital Radio, gave an examination of presentation andprogramming: "Putting on the style". Musicradio should be a combination of art, craft andscience and for a station broadcasting wholedays it is essential to identify your audienceand to choose the right record on the righttime for the right kind of person. But not only aprofile of your audience is necessary, but oneshould also take into account the way recordsare programmed; some records just don't fittogether in tempo or atmosphere, somerecords are not suitable to wake up youraudience early in the morning and somerecords do better during mid day.One issue that continues to raise conflictingopinions, is the extent to which radio should beprogrammed on the basis of sales charts.Robin Valk, music manager of theBirmingham based station BRMB took a firmstand against statistical programming. Chartsare used too much as a promotional tool, veryoften the fact that a record jumps from e.g. 50to 32 doesn't mean automatically thatsignificant sales are reflected behind such a

move. Good positions are no justification forairplay and stations that rely too much oncharts will become computerized radiostations. To give an indication of the fluctuation of saleswith regards to a number 1 position and thehuge difference between a no. 1 and a e.g. no.30 position Robin presented some examplesof sales figures correlated with chart positions(see figures below). The first lines indicate approximate nationalsales, the second lines are sales for the BRMB(Birmingham) Area. Both the Foreigner and the Band Aid singlewere no. 1 but the difference in sales washuge. The same applies for the differencebetween a no. 1 record and the no. 30: goodpositions do not justify airplay and do not givea direct indication of sales. In fact charts should be used over an extended.period of time, one should keep track on whatis happening to a particular artist over a year'speriod, together with a sales index; artist -ranking lists could give a more reliableindication on how an artist album or single hasdeveloped over an extended period of time.Unfortunately we don't have the spaceavailable to give all the speakers the credit thatthey deserve, we picked out those issues thatcould have importance for radio stations onthe Continent and therefore skipped outtechnical matters of PRS, music radio'srelationship with the copyright bodies, needletirne and the way the English (Gallup)charts are compiled (although we are planningto include such a feature in one of ourupcoming issues).Definitely an initiative that deserves a follow-up.
