Thursday, May 7th, 2009 & Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Thanks to Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) and Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS), TranSComm successfully offered two FREE bike safety tune ups. There were 45 cyclists registered, but we were able to serve an additional 10 people that were on the waiting list.

to take advantage of all the cycling events throughout the city. Every year we enjoy this celebration to honor our cyclists who are doing the right thing for the environment and their health by cycling to school/work.

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009 On Wednesday, May 13th at noon at the East Newton Bike Cage located next to the Dental School on East Newton Street, over 80 cyclists gathered to enjoy a delicious lunch provided by TranSComm. The luncheon festivities included: a nutritious free lunch, cycling literature, meeting other cyclists, raffles and free giveaways! Like last year, there were tables assembled so that cyclists enjoyed their lunches and got to know other cyclists here in the medical center. Please see the “BIKE WEEK RAFFLE WINNER” list on page #3 for a list of the winners. Also, TranSComm supported the Mayor’s city-wide Bay State Bike Week. Over 500 Cyclists from the Medical Center registered Cyclists enjoying lunch and each

Thirty companies in the greater Boston area received awards and TranSComm was delighted to be one of them.

Boston University Medical Center and affiliates are proud of the success of the employee commute program that was launched in February. The program is designed to support getting to and from work in the simplest way while reducing your CO2 footprint! This service will help you find colleagues to share a ride. Employees can utilize the new service to find fellow carpoolers who share a consistent work schedule or to plan a one-time unique trip to work. The program also assesses the daily and overall impact (Please see the snapshot at right) of the efforts of the ent i re BUMC community; furthermore, the program provides specialized estimates of each employee’s individual contribution to carbon emission reduction and gas conservation. The BUMC Green Committee’s purpose is to promote the health of patients, visitors, employees, local communities—as well as the global community–while operating economically and efficiently through the implementation of environmentally conscious programs. The Green Committee will oversee the d i r e c t i o n , d e v e l o p m e n t a n d implementation of environmentally sound programs and policies. In 2008, the BMC campus reduced its carbon footprint by 239 metric tons, a very significant achievement that the BMC Green Committee is largely responsible for. Please visit: www.internal.bmc.org/green/

The BUMC Sustainability Committee recently launched a pilot program to advocate recycling. The committee specifically outlines three major goals: to reduce the amount of solid waste sent to landfills, to reduce the cost of solid waste shipping, and to create an env i ronment o f reduc ing our consumption of materials at BUMC. The pilot recycling program requires staff to put their recyclable waste into a large labeled recycling tote, which Facilities Management can empty on a regular basis. The Sustainability Committee encourages staff feedback for proper assessment of the pilot. Please visit: www.bumc.bu.edu/sustainability

TranSComm is a member of both the BMC Green and BU Sustainability Committee.
