Hurray for the red, white, and blue! This week as we prepare to celebrate our nation’s independence, it’s the perfect time for us to examine these three colors. Follow along as we look at their significance and the differing meanings they convey in different cultures. • The red of the American flag is symbolic of valor

and bravery, while white signifies purity and innocence. Blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

• Canada’s current maple leaf flag of red and white has only been the country’s official flag since 1965 when it was proclaimed so by Queen Elizabeth II. Prior to that, Canada had used the Canadian Red Ensign since 1870. Red and white are the official colors of Canada, as declared by King George V in 1921.

• Red is the color of blood and fire and often symbolizes love, passion, and romance, as well as strength, courage, and leadership. It’s associated with anger, danger, and malice as well.

• There are hundreds of varieties of red wine grapes, each offering a different flavor to the beverage. The region of Bordeaux, France, is the original home of many familiar red grapes, including the cabernet sauvignon, which contributes a flavor of black currant, and the merlot, which offers a hint of

(Trivia Test answers page 16)

It’s a week for honoring patriots and observing significant milestones in our nation’s history, so we’ve decided to look at Dolley Madison, gracious wife of the fourth U.S. President, James Madison. Read on to learn about the rather unusual riches-to-rags story of America’s “first” First Lady, who gained as much respect from the American people as her husband. • Raised in a conservative Quaker family, at

21, Dolley Payne married fellow Quaker John Todd, a Philadelphia lawyer. The young couple had two sons during the next three years. When a yellow fever epidemic raged across Philadelphia in 1793, Dolley lost her 29-year-old husband, her three-month-old son and both in-laws. She was left a widow at age 25 with her young son Payne to support.

• The following year, Dolley met and married 43-year-old bachelor James Madison, a Cont-inental Congress delegate from Virginia, and 17 years her senior. Since Madison was not a Quaker, Dolley was expelled from the Society of Friends for marrying outside her faith.

• After serving eight years in Congress, Madison retired from politics and the couple moved to his Montpelier, Virginia plantation when Dolley was 30.

• But Madison’s withdrawal from politics was short-lived. Just four years later, his long-time friend Thomas Jefferson, newly elected as President, asked him to serve as his Secretary of State. Madison accepted, and the family moved to Washington

• Jefferson himself was widowed, and during his term in office Dolley often acted as hostess for official White House functions. Her assistance

in this role allowed Jefferson to fulfill the necessary protocols required of the President, a function that is usually associated with the President’s wife.

• By the time her husband James was elected President eight years later, she was already well-known in political and social circles as a gracious and charming hostess with exceptional organizational skills.

• Dolley was praised for her grace and hospitality as the President’s wife, and she soon became known as the “First Lady,” the first time this term had been used for the chief executive’s wife. She also aided in the completion and furnishing of the newly constructed White House, decorating it in grand style as an appropriate setting suitable for receiving and entertaining diplomats and heads of state.

• Dolley also set the precedent for a First Lady to become involved in social issues and special projects. She led the fund-raising efforts for the “The Corps of Discovery,” better known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the exploration of the newly-acquired Louisiana Purchase. In addition, orphaned girls of Washington, D.C. found a home in a facility that Dolley helped

light is made up of all the color frequencies of light combined. It’s what the human eye sees when it looks at light that contains all of the wavelengths of color’s visible spectrum.

• If you’ve ever been asked to bring a white elephant to a party, you know to pack along something that you don’t want, perhaps an inexpensive, useless, or joke item. This term has its origins in Southeast Asia in ancient times. Tradition holds that the mother of Buddha dreamed of a white elephant presenting her with a lotus flower on the eve of her son’s birth. The white elephant was considered sacred, and a monarch who possessed one reigned with justice and power. However, because the animal was sacred, it could not be put to any practical use, while at the same time it cost the owner a considerable sum to maintain. Although it became burdensome to keep, the owner could not dispose of it.

• Looking at the color blue can promote rest and cause the body to produce calming chemicals that release feelings of tranquility. Experts in feng shui tell us that blue is the perfect choice for the bathroom because of its tranquil and healing properties. Some cultures believe that blue keeps bad spirits away. In Iran it’s the color of mourning. To those of the Jewish faith, blue is the color of holiness. In China, it represents immortality.

• There are more than 700 species of the flowering plant indigofera. Although we think of indigo as a dye used to color our denim jeans blue, other varieties are effective as anti-inflammatories to relieve the pain of bug stings, snake bites, swelling, and ulcers. Colonial planters in the mid-18th century began exporting the plants, but indigo had been a major source of capital for India since around 300 B.C.

• The word “blue” has found its way into our language in several different arenas. Stocks that are solid and stable are called blue-chip stocks and a first-place winner is awarded the blue ribbon. Laws designed to curtail immoral behavior are referred to as blue laws, and a bluenose is an overly puritanical person. A member of the working class is called a blue

• Surveys have revealed that the color most often associated with innocence, purity, perfection, and honesty is white. Although royal brides have worn white for centuries, it didn’t become the color of wedding gowns for the commoner until the 19th century. Prior to that, brides just wore their “Sunday best.” However, in China, white is symbolic of death and mourning, and the color is worn to funerals.

• Brides in China usually wear red, because it’s the color of happiness and fortune. The Chinese bride walks down a red carpet to meet her groom, who lifts her red veil. When the couple has children, friends and family give them red eggs. During Chinese New Year, homes are decorated with red, red clothing is worn, and unmarried children are given red envelopes filled with “luck money.” Those who follow feng shui, the art of balancing the energies of a space to promote health and good fortune, say that painting your home’s front door red invites prosperity.

• The Chicago White Sox began as the White Stockings in 1900. Their new home, Comiskey Park, opened in 1910 on the former site of a city dump and remained the team’s ballpark for the next 80 years. The first-ever All-Star game was played there in 1933. At the time of its demolition in 1991, Comiskey was Major League Baseball’s oldest park still in use. Famous White Sox players include Goose Gossage, Tom Seaver, and Steve Carlton.

Red, white and blue faces? If you keep saying the

same thing repeatedly, but no one is listening, you’re talking until you’re blue in the face. Maybe you’ve said something embar-rassing and you’re red-faced. If

you look like you’ve seen a ghost, you’re white-faced. Or if you

happen to be a mime and your face is painted white, you exude a plain, unemo-

tional or stoic appearance.

DOLLEY MADISON (from page 2)

establish and organize. • Dolley was winning the hearts of Americans,

and the President’s popularity increased as the nation’s fondness and affection for his gracious and generous wife continued to grow.

• Dolley also began the tradition of America’s presidential inaugural balls when her husband was elected to his second term. She hosted the celebration at the prestigeous Long’s Hotel in Washington, with 400 tickets sold at $4 each.

• During the War of 1812, the White House was set afire by invading British troops. As the White House staff was hurrying to leave, Dolley ordered the hasty removal the original Gilbert Stuart full-length portrait of George Washington. But the historic painting was securely fastened to the wall with screws, and in the frenzy of confusion no one was equipped to remove it. So she ordered the frame to be broken apart and the canvas salvaged, as well as the original drafts of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Were it not for her insistence, the American people would have lost these irreplaceable treasures forever.

• Soon after his retirement from the presidency in 1817, Dolley and James Madison returned to the Montpelier plantation in Orange County, Virginia.

• In the years that followed, Payne, Dolley’s son from her first marriage, had never found a career and had accumulated a massive amount of debt through gambling, alcoholism and raucous living. The family discreetly kept the matter quiet, with James Madison himself covering some of the mounting debt with his own money.

• Payne’s irresponsible lifestyle and spending eventually caught up with him and he was sent to debtors’ prison. The Madisons sold land in Kentucky and mortgaged half of the Montpelier plantation to pay off his enormous debt.

• When her husband died in 1836, Dolley found herself facing a financial crisis with almost all of the family assets now gone. Her son Payne moved in with her for a lengthy stay at this time. During this period, Dolley organized seven volumes of her husband’s presidential papers and personal notes, which she sold to Congress for $55,000. While it was a considerable sum, it wasn’t nearly enough to cover the outstanding burden of debt she faced.

• In the fall of 1837, Dolley returned to Washington to raise more money by selling the rest of the president’s papers. She placed Payne

in charge of the plantation during her absence, but his alcoholism and other related illnesses caused him to utterly fail as a manager.

• Unable to find a buyer for the remainder of the President’s papers, she was forced to sell the Montpelier plantation along with all of the furnishings to pay off the debt.

• She moved to a tiny house in Washington, D.C. and was forced to live in conditions of abject poverty. Sympathetic friends, neighbors and even former plantation slaves who loved and respected her, would often visit with baskets of food, small amounts of cash and other necessities.

• In 1848, Congress agreed to buy the rest of the James Madison papers from Dolley for the sum of $25,000. She died a year later at her home in Washington at the age of 81. She was first buried in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C., but later was re-interred at Montpelier next to her husband James.

Those who sell the cards must pay a $1 to $3 license fee. *** Thought for the Day: “When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world.” -- George Washington Carver

other AB’s, but they can receive blood from all others. Type O positive is the most common blood type. Got all that?

• Are you an apprentice or greenhorn, learning the rudiments of something new? Then you are an abecedarian! The term not only refers to rookies, newbies, and beginners, it can also signify someone who is just learning the alphabet.

• The familiar incantation Abracadabra has its origins in the Hebrew language and translates, “I create what I speak.” Its first mention was in a third-century book, which touted the word’s healing power to make lethal diseases go away.

• Have you found something to be enigmatic, esoteric, or recondite? These are all unusual words that are synonymous with the word “abstruse,” which simply means “difficult to understand.” In other words, “It’s Greek to me!”

• An abyss is defined as “an immeasurably deep chasm or depth.” Russia’s Lake Baikal, located near the border of Siberia and Mongolia, is the world’s largest lake and deepest freshwater abyss on the planet. It’s not quite immeasurable, however, since its depth has been calculated at 5,402 feet (1,637 meters). Lake Baikal contains 20% of the entire world’s fresh water, and all of the Great Lakes could be poured into its depths with room to spare.

• If your hobby is abseiling, what are you doing? You enjoy rappelling on cliffs and rock faces!

• Did you know that bananas are for more than just eating? A strong fiber obtained from the plant’s leaf stalk called abaca has exceptional strength, flexibility, and is also very resistant to the damages of salt water. Consequently, it’s a favorite component of ships’ ropes, fishing lines, nets and well-drilling cables.

• There is a lot more we could add to this list, but because of the lack of space we’ll just have to abstain!

If you need an attorney as a result of a serious personal injury, there are certain things you should consider.

We feel it is inappropriate for a lawyer or representative to contact you as a result of an accident. In fact, unsolicited personal contact is prohibited by the State Bar. The decision to contact an attorney is yours and yours alone.

This means that you pay no attorney’s fees unless your lawyer either negotiates a settlement with your approval or wins a judgement in court. This method of compensation makes legal representation available to many who otherwise could not afford it. It also means that if your case has merit, you can be well represented by a qualifi ed attorney.

Ask friends or attorneys you know for references of personal injury lawyers, or check with the California Bar Association. It’s the best way to fi nd an ethical, competent attorney with the trial experience it takes to bring your case to a fair conclusion. Beware of the promises and claims some attorneys make in their ads.

No, we’re not headed to the gym, we’re headed to the dictionary! That’s where we’ll find all sorts of interesting items beginning the letters “AB....” • When a monarch such as a king or queen

relinquishes the power of the office, it’s known as abdication. One of the most famous abdications is that of the United Kingdom’s King Edward VIII. Edward was King for just 326 days in 1936 and became the first Brit to surrender his position voluntarily. Shortly after becoming King, he proposed marriage to an American socialite who was in the process of divorcing her second husband. Being advised that the British people would never accept an American with two ex-husbands as queen, he gave up the throne and married Wallis Simpson seven months later. He was succeeded by his brother, George VI, who was succeeded by his own daughter, Queen Elizabeth II.

• There are four major blood groups in the ABO blood group. Blood type is determined by the presence or absence of antigens. Group A has the A antigen on red blood cells, while Group B has the B antigen, or red cells. Group AB has both antigens, and Group O has neither. Those in Group O can donate red blood cells to anyone and are the universal blood donors. Group A can donate to those in A and AB, while those with Type B can donate to B’s and AB’s. Those with Type AB blood can only donate to

Q: I thought that “Eastbound and Down” was over, that the third season was its last season. Now I hear there is a new season coming. Is this true? -- Larry T., Philadelphia, Pa.

A: Originally, “Eastbound and Down” was supposed to be only three seasons. Danny McBride and company ended the series in a hilarious way that only they could. However, HBO (and perhaps pres-sure from die-hard fans like us) convinced Danny, Will Farrell and the rest of the crew to return for a fourth season. I, for one, am thrilled, as this has been a highlight of my sitcom-watching career. The fourth -- and supposedly final -- season of HBO’s “Eastbound and Down” is scheduled to premiere Sept. 29. ***

Q: Can you tell me how Vivian Camp-bell of Def Leppard is doing? I heard he has cancer. -- Shelley W. in North Carolina

A: According to the axeman himself, the Def Leppard guitarist is doing just fine. He has Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which has an 80 percent cure rate, and he is currently undergoing chemotherapy. He plans to continue touring with the band through-out the summer. In his words, he wanted to warn fans about his “new aerodynamic hairstyle (read: no hair) ... I don’t want anyone to be so shocked by my new look that they ask for a refund.” ***

Q: One of my favorite shows is TNT’s “Rizzoli and Isles.” Can you give me any clues as to what to expect this season? -- Janet Y., via email

A: I had the chance to speak with series star Sasha Alexander, who plays Dr. Maura Isles, and she gave me a few spoilers about season four, which begins Tuesday, June 25: “We start three months af-ter the end of season three. Maura has anonymously donated her kidney to her sister, Kayleen. Maura is in a funky place. She’s feeling vulnerable and fragile. She’s not her normal, sunny self. “It’s fun watching Jane try to lift her spirits. It leads to funny antics with Maura and Jane. It brings Maura and Kayleen together, which leads to a rela-tionship, and more of a family drama.” In regard to future storylines and guest stars, we can expect great ones this season, starting with Maura’s love life. As Sasha tells me: “Eric Winter (of

‘The Mentalist,’ ‘Brothers and Sisters’ and ‘The Ugly Truth’) is a potential love interest. He’s great -- I love him. He plays a bomb-squad tech that Maura is at-tracted to.” Because of my affinity for “Dawson’s Creek,” I had to ask her about her time there. “I had a wonderful experience. I love that I went to the prom with Dawson. James (Van Der Beek), Michelle (Williams), Josh (Jackson) and I are still dear friends. We don’t have shows like that anymore. I love the inno-cence and the beauty of that show. It was a really fun experi-ence for me, and it was a really positive show. I wish there were something like it on the air now.” ***

Q: I absolutely loved this season of “Southland.” I heard this was its final season. Is that true? -- Don A., via e-mail

A: TNT recently announced that this sea-son of the cop drama was, indeed, its last, opting not to renew the critically acclaimed series for a sixth season.

Ultra-Easy Chicken Cacciatore You know you have to get dinner on the table -- but you also know that you’re really not into spending hours cooking over a hot stove on those hot summer days. Try this easy recipe that will please everyone at the table -- while you still keep your “cool.”

16 ounces skinned and boned uncooked chicken breast, cut into 4 pieces 1 (4-ounce) can sliced mushrooms, drained 1/2 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce 1/3 cup fat-free Italian salad dressing

1. In a large skillet sprayed with olive oil-flavored cooking spray, brown chicken pieces for 3 to 4 minutes on each side. Sprinkle mushrooms, onion and green pepper over chicken.

2. In a small bowl, combine tomato sauce and Italian dressing. Evenly spoon sauce mixture over top. Lower heat, cover and simmer for 25 to 30 minutes or until vegetables and chicken are tender, stirring occasionally.

3. When serving, evenly spoon sauce over chicken pieces. Freezes well. Makes 4 servings.

Each serving equals: 167 calories, 3g fat, 25g protein, 10g carb., 783mg sodium, 2g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 3 Meat, 2 Vegetable.

The Power of Gratitude A while ago, you may recall, I challenged my readers to dump their negative thoughts, which can so easily lead to negative and destructive behaviors. The assignment was simple: Write down 10 things for which you are grateful. I even sug-gested that they send me their lists. My mailboxes were sizzling for days. Now, weeks later, lists are still trickling in. The responses were all heartwarm-ing, but perhaps none as poignant as the one from Allie, a high school student. “I am having a really tough time in high school right now, and even though most times I have positive thoughts and attitudes, sometimes it gets really hard, but I usually catch myself and try to reverse the negative thoughts into positive ones. After reading this I wanted to send you my 10 good things in life. 1. I have a caring family. 2. I have amazing friends. 3. I have the opportunity to wake up in the morning. 4. I am able to watch the snow fall. 5. I am able to go skiing with my friends in the winter. 6. I was able to be at the beach this last summer for a whole week without my parents. 7. I was blessed to have a special person in my life that is now in a better place. 8. I have another very special person who is always there and I can always talk to about any-thing. 9. I am able to read great books. 10. Last summer I was able to have a dream come true and attend a concert of my favor-ite singer. “Thank you for reminding me of all these wonderful times and people in my life. Every time I find myself getting negative, I will try and remember each of these special times and people that God has blessed me with and that you have reminded me of. Thank you so much. -- Allie” Not long after receiving Allie’s message,

I picked up Deborah Norville’s book, “Thank You Power.” In it she presents the latest research on the impact of positive emotions in our lives. The influ-ence of gratitude is quantifiable both physically and emotionally. Simply being thankful and making it a point to recognize those good things will positively change our lives. She presents scientific proof that we will be happier, healthier and better able to handle the stresses of daily life simply by saying thank you. I hope Allie is reading this so she will know that she’s not the only one who was impacted by her willingness to be grateful for the good things in her life. Reading her message filled my heart to overflowing. Then I passed it around the office. In a kind of ripple effect, the Allie letter touched each of us in a positive way. And now the ripple effect goes on because I know Allie has touched your life in a positive way, too. Want to dump your destructive negative feelings? Start writing. Just 10 things. And yes, my mailbox is still open for business! While you’re thinking about it, pick up a copy of Deborah’s book. It’s one you will want to own so you can read it often. It’s short, easy-to-read and carries a powerful message -- one that can change your life.

Make the Connection If you’re a veteran who is struggling to find ways to improve your life, perhaps because you’re dealing with a service-related issue, I invite you to take a look at Make the Connection, a website run by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Make the Connection is a one-stop site for a wide variety of concerns affecting veterans: home-lessness, jobs and employment, family and friends, mental-health concerns, transitioning from the ser-vice, dealing with physical injury - and more. Most impressive and useful is the Signs & Symptoms section. It’s long, with dozens of symp-toms, including flashbacks, feeling on edge, noise or light irritation, confusion, trouble sleeping, night-mares, and others. Each section is broken into three parts. The first part is, “What can I do about it right away?” The steps aren’t silly, either; they’re ones a counselor or medical adviser likely would talk about first. It tells you things you can do right now to feel better and regain control. The second step is to make the connection with medical or mental-health advisers. The third step is providing you with links to information you can access immediately. You can even customize the site to give in-formation tailored more closely to who you are and to your specific condition. Select from male/female, the era in which you served, the branch of service and whether you were exposed to combat. If you don’t have a computer, try to find one to use, possibly at your local library, and check in with Make the Connection at http://makethecon-nection.net. You’ll likely find sources of informa-tion and help. Don’t miss the videos of veterans who talk about their own experiences. If you’re with a veterans service organiza-tion, especially if you’re in an advising capacity, look over the Make the Connection site and become fa-miliar with what it has to offer the veterans that you are helping.

Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally an-swer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to [email protected].

Up in the Air For search-and-rescue dogs, saving lives is all in a day’s work. But these furry heroes don’t all work the same. Nose to the ground. Nose in the air. Not to oversimplify things, but up or down, it’s all in the po-sition of the nose. Trackers, or tracking dogs, put their nose to the ground and get busy. These dogs work from a “last seen” starting point and require something with the missing person’s scent. Trackers don’t search; they follow. They are the dogs you call when a child goes missing on the way to school, when a dementia patient wanders off, when a prisoner escapes. For air-scenters, it’s all up in the air -- espe-cially the nose. These highly trained hounds pick up human scent in the air and follow it to its source, whether that be “somewhere” in a national park, in the wilderness, in a body of water or buried under 20 feet of snow in the case of avalanche victims. Air-scenters also are the dogs brought in for what is considered the most challenging of search-and-rescue missions: the urban disaster. In this sense, urban is as much Moore, Okla., in the wake of the recent spate of tornadoes as it was Ground Zero on 9/11. “Urban disaster” refers to a large-scale search for survivors or casualties after the collapse of a building or buildings for any reason -- earth-quake, flood, hurricane, tornado, fire, accident or terrorism. After an EF-5 tornado ripped through Moore this month, more than 100 people feared dead were rescued from the rubble and debris. Many of them have an air-scenter to thank for that. FEMA’s certification requirements are the only national standards for search-and-rescue teams wanting to specialize in urban disaster work, and those standards are very difficult to meet. Accord-ing to “How Search and Rescue Dogs Work” by Julia Layton, “Fewer than 100 dog/handler teams in the country are FEMA certified. Local SAR organiza-tions have their own standards for ‘mission ready’ qualification, typically based on guidelines devel-oped by organizations like the American Rescue Dog Association and the National Association for Search and Rescue.” Generally speaking, in order to get any-where near the rescue end of an urban disaster, a dog must demonstrate competency in the areas of basic obedience, professionalism, mental and physi-cal ability, and tracking skills. But more than size or

breed or physique, success as a SAR dog depends on obsession. Toy obsession. The toy is the reward. The deeper the obsession the more devoted to the mission. Whether working with noses down on the ground or up in the air, SAR dogs do things we hu-mans simply are not equipped to do. For that and for them, we should be grateful.

CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9)

Peripheral Neuropathy Requires Watchful Care Peripheral neuropathy is a major cause of distressing pain and disability. To understand the condition, begin with the name. The body has two main nervous systems: the central nervous system, including the brain and the spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system, including nerves that link the brain and spinal cord to everything else -- arms and hands, legs and feet, internal organs, joints and so forth. “Neuropathy” means damage to nerve cells, muscle movement and strength. Peripheral neuropathy involves damage to the nerves in the hands and the feet. These nerves control sensation, including pain, heat, cold and touch, as well as motor nerves that regulate muscle movement. Occasionally nerves responsible for balance, blood pressure and bowel function may be affected. Earliest symptoms are numbness and tin-gling in the toes and fingers that gradually worsen, causing burning, sharp pain that feels like electricity and increased sensitivity to touch. Simply touching the soles of the feet can cause unbearable discom-fort. Loss of nerve supply to muscles leads to weakness, impaired gait and balance and even paralysis. In the worst cases, bowel and bladder problems develop, and difficulties in regulating blood pressure can occur. The two most common causes -- by far -- are long-term alcohol abuse and diabetes. Alcohol can damage nerves directly or indirectly by poor diet and malnutrition. Diabetes causes damage to tiny arteries throughout the body. This is referred to as diabetic microangiopa-thy, and it leads to impaired blood supply to the nerves in the hands and the feet and hence, the pe-ripheral neuropathy that affects half of all diabetics. Rarer causes of peripheral neuropathy include chemotherapy-induced damage to nerves, exposure to toxins, such as heavy metals and certain infections, including HIV, Lyme disease, infectious mononucleosis and chronic hepatitis. Peripheral neuropathy can also occur when nerves are damaged by injuries or benign or malignant tu-mors. Liver or kidney disease and impaired thyroid function can lead to peripheral neuropathy, as can deficiencies of vitamins B-1, B-6 and B-12. Sometimes an immune reaction causes peripheral neuropathy. The most common is Guil-lain-Barre syndrome, in which inflammation causes

damage to nerves resulting in weakness that can be life threatening. Most individuals recover com-pletely. Occasionally, an inherited illness can cause damage to peripheral nerves; the most common is Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. In addition to severe pain and weakness, a serious effect of peripheral neuropathy is complete loss of sensation in the soles of the feet and lower legs. Because of an inability to feel temperature or pain, any minor injury can lead to serious wounds. This is a particular concern in diabetics, where the associated impaired blood supply makes wound healing very difficult. These wounds can become large, involve the underlying bone and frequently become infected. They require extensive care in specialized wound clinics, and if not diligent-ly cared for can lead to loss of a limb. Anyone who develops symptoms should see his physician as soon as possible. If a poten-tially correctable cause is identified, symptoms can be rapidly improved. Even when total eradication of symptoms is not possible, stopping drinking or compulsive treatment of medical problems such as diabetes or hypothyroidism can lead to improve-ment or, at least, no worsening of symptoms. While every effort should be directed at identifying a cause, in as many as 50 percent of cases, the disease is labeled as “idiopathic” as no illness can be identified. Treatment centers on pain control and mini-mizing the effects of muscle weakness. Common pain pills such as Tylenol, Aleve or more powerful prescription pain medications offer little benefit. Narcotics should be avoided as pain is amplified and the need for drugs increases as tolerance to the pain medication occurs. There are a number of medications that ap-pear to essentially “soothe the nerves” and reduce the painful sensations such as severe burning and tingling. These include gabapentin (Neurontin), pregabalin (Lyrica) and a class of antidepres-sants called tricyclics (amitriptyline hydrochloride). More commonly used antidepressants are often prescribed. These do not have any effect on the nerves but improve the effectiveness of specific pain medications. Local anesthetic injections and patches can also offer some relief. Every effort must be made to reduce inju-ries. Patients should never walk barefoot, and spe-cial shoes are often needed for diabetics. Braces can help movement caused by muscle weakness, and physical therapy to improve the function of muscle that isn’t affected is critically important. As with any chronic disease, try not to be-come frustrated by failures during the search for a treatment. Stick with a physician who is an expert, one you trust. Become as knowledgeable as pos-sible about the cause and manifestations of neu-ropathy as this insight will help your ability to cope.

‘I’m Getting the Wrong Amount’ Is a Common Gripe Q: A short while ago, you wrote a col-umn about women who shared complaints about their Social Security benefits while on a cruise. Well, I wish I could afford to take a cruise so I could complain about my Social Se-curity problems. Here is my gripe: Since my ex-husband died three years ago, I don’t think I’ve been getting enough money. We were married for 30 years and got a divorce about 10 years before he died. I never remarried, but he did. He was an architect and made big money. Af-ter talking to other women, I think I should be getting more than $2,050 in widow’s benefits. Is the fact that he remarried and has another widow lowering the amount I’m getting? Don’t tell me to go to my Social Security office for help. That place is a zoo! Can I simply write a letter to Social Security to appeal the fact that I think I am being paid incorrectly? A: Before I give you some advice, let me tell you this. Based on my 32 years of experience work-ing for the Social Security Administration, and the 15 years I’ve been writing this column, I can tell you that the number one complaint I hear from people -- by far -- is this: “I don’t think I am getting the right Social Security benefit amount.” And here is a surprise: Not once in the past four decades have I ever heard anyone allege that he or she was getting too much money! I guess that’s just human nature. People tend to believe they are being cheated out of something that everyone else is getting. I think this phenomenon results when se-nior citizens start talking and comparing govern-ment benefit amounts. The person getting less in-evitably feels as if he or she has been left holding the short end of the Social Security stick. What they don’t understand is that there are literally dozens of variables that determine the amount of a Social Security check: date of birth, earnings history, your age when you filed for benefits, early retirement re-ductions, late retirement bonuses, etc. Readers who follow this column know that I am often critical of SSA and the service the or-ganization provides. But I can tell you there is one thing they are very good at: SSA is very careful and very accurate about calculating Social Security ben-

efits. There have been countless studies done by Congress and other oversight agencies concerning the accuracy of Social Security payments. And the studies show that SSA pays the right benefit amount something like 99 percent of the time. I should clarify that I am talking about the accuracy of the initial calculation of a person’s basic Social Security benefit amount. People getting ongo-ing Social Security checks can be paid incorrectly from time to time. But that’s usually because SSA has faulty information. For example, a person who is working and making more than the earnings pen-alty limit fails to inform the government of his or her income, resulting in benefits being paid that were not due. Those kinds of “overpayments” are com-mon. But the person’s basic Social Security benefit amount is still accurate. So now back to your question. First, I can tell you that your benefit rate is not affected at all by the fact that your ex-husband had a second wife. If she is getting a widow’s benefit on his record, it has no impact on what you are getting. Or to put that an-other way, anything she is due does not offset what is payable to you. And by the same token, anything you are due does not offset what she can get from his account. Second, it is simply too late to file a legal ap-peal of your benefit rate. As a general rule, you have 60 days to ask SSA to reconsider any decision they make about your Social Security benefits. In other words, when they sent you an “award letter” three years ago telling you about your eligibility for di-vorced widow’s benefits, you had two months from the date of that letter to ask them to review your wid-ow’s computation if you thought the benefit rate was wrong. As you suggested, you could simply write a letter to SSA asking for an explanation of your ben-efit rate. But I don’t think that will work. Think of it this way: If you had a Sears washing machine that broke down, would you write a letter to Sears ask-ing them to fix it? Of course you wouldn’t. You would either call them or visit your local Sears store to seek some help. And that’s what you should do with your So-cial Security problem. I recommend you contact SSA at 800-772-1213 and see if someone can help you over the phone. If that doesn’t work, I suggest you bite the bullet and pay a visit to your local Social Security office. Plan to spend a little time there. Take a book and pack a lunch! If the front desk person can’t or

won’t help you, ask to speak to a supervisor. As I said, there is a very high probability that you are being paid correctly. But if you’re willing to spend one day of your life at the “zoo,” at least you will be able to live out the rest of your days knowing that you are getting exactly what you are due from your ex-husband’s Social Security account.

WARNING: Reading Tidbits is Habit Forming!

Treating Animal Bites DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you tell me the best way to treat pet bites? I have three young children, and we live in a neighborhood where every family except us has at least one pet. Most are dogs. I don’t want to overreact to a tiny scratch, but I need to know what to do with a more serious bite. -- A.M.

ANSWER: I’m limiting my remarks to cat and dog bites. Wild-animal bites require more in-volved treatment and are best taken care of in a hospi-tal setting. A domesticated animal that has bitten a child or adult should be observed for 10 days to see if it exhibits signs of rabies. The threat of rabies is small, but maximal precautions have to be taken because ra-bies is such a deadly illness. Unprovoked bites from an animal raise the suspicion of rabies. Less-serious bites, the ones that can be treat-ed at home, are copiously irrigated with sterile salt-water. Not many homes have sterile saltwater, so the bite should be washed with soap and water and then irrigated with tap water. After the irrigation, apply a disinfectant like Betadine (povidone iodine). Inspect the wound daily for any signs of infection -- skin red-ness or pus. If you see those signs, take the child to a doctor. If the child’s immunizations are up to date, all is well. If they are not, he or she needs a tetanus booster. If the child has had no tetanus immuniza-tions, the series should begin right away. Wounds that are large, that bleed, that are quite deep or are in a place, like the face, where they might be deforming should be taken care of by a pro-fessional. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I’m in my 60s and never had a major illness. I take no med-icines. In the past three months, I have been wakened from sleep with a dull pain in the cen-ter of my chest. My husband told me to take Mylanta. I did, and got instant relief. What do you think of this pain? -- V.P.

ANSWER: Pain that wakens a person from sleep must be taken seriously and ought to be report-ed to the family doctor. However, the response you got from taking Mylanta (an antacid) makes me think of GERD -- gas-troesophageal reflux disease, more commonly known as heartburn. Stomach acid and digestive juices spurt into the esophagus, a structure not equipped to deal

Medicare Unveils New Summary Notice Form Medicare fraud is rampant, but because of seniors who asked questions about improper pay-ments, more than $4.2 billion was saved last year. To continue to fight fraud and to help seniors un-derstand the quarterly Medicare Summary Notice, a new form has been designed. To make sure the new summary you receive is actually from Medicare, start with the envelope. The return address will say Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Look for “Official Medicare Information” on the front and contact telephone numbers on the back. The changes to the form are: Page 1 is a summary of your notice. It includes your name, deductible status and the status of all claims, including whether they’ve been approved. The total amount you may be billed and how many facilities (such as hospitals) submitted claims also are itemized. Page 2 offers tips on how to review the notice. There are instructions on how to check for possible fraud, how many Inpatient Hospital and Skilled Nursing Facility benefit days you’ve used, and a phone number to call. Page 3 is your Claims for Part A informa-tion, and includes where you were hospitalized, whether the claim was approved, how much Medicare paid and how much you might be billed. Check the hospital dates carefully to make sure you were actually there on those dates. The final page tells how to handle denied claims or file an appeal. To file an appeal, follow the step-by-step instructions. If you need help with it, there is a phone number to call, or Medicare suggests asking for help from the facility itself or a friend or family member. Don’t miss the date it must receive the appeal. At the bottom is the ad-dress of where to send the appeal.

If this nighttime pain of yours keeps coming back, put 6-inch blocks under the bedposts at the head of your bed to keep stomach juices in the stomach when you lie down. My first statement about nighttime pain has to be observed. You need to see the family doctor to be certain this is heartburn and not one of the many other serious possibilities. On July 7, 1852, according to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories, Dr. John H. Watson is born. Coincidentally, the author died on this day in England at the age of 71. His first Sherlock Holmes story, “A Study in Scarlet,” was published in Beeton’s Christmas An-nual in 1887.

On July 3, 1863, on the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s last attempt at breaking the Union line ends in disastrous failure, bring-ing the most decisive battle of the Ameri-can Civil War to an end. Exhausted, both armies held their positions until the night of July 4, when Lee withdrew.

On July 5, 1946, French designer Louis Reard unveils a daring two-piece swimsuit at a Paris swimming pool. A Parisian show-girl modeled the new fashion, which Reard dubbed “bikini,” inspired by a U.S. atomic test that took place off the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean earlier that week.

On July 4, 1954, Marilyn Sheppard is beaten to death inside her home in Cleve-land. Her husband, Dr. Sam Sheppard, claimed to see a man with bushy hair flee-ing the scene, but the authorities charged Sheppard with killing his pregnant wife. Sheppard’s case provided the loose inspi-ration for the hit television show “The Fugi-tive.”

On July 2, 1964, in a nationally tele-vised ceremony, President Lyndon John-son signs into law the historic Civil Rights Act. The Civil Rights Act met tough opposi-tion in the House and a lengthy, heated de-bate in the Senate before being approved.

On July 6, 1976, in Annapolis, Md., the United States Naval Academy admits women for the first time in its history with the induction of 81 female midshipmen. In May 1980, Elizabeth Anne Rowe became the first woman member of the class to graduate.

On July 1, 1984, the Motion Picture Asso-ciation of America, which oversees the vol-untary rating system for movies, introduces a new rating, PG-13. The action film “Red Dawn,” starring Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen, became the first PG-13 movie to be released in theaters.

Retirement Priorities Q: What advice do you have for new retirees like us who need to adjust to our new way of life? I’m concerned about getting lazy and “wasting away.” What’s a checklist of pri-orities to follow as guidelines to prevent this?

A: Maintaining your health should head the list. As we begin to age we find that our bodies don’t have the resiliency they once had and we have to start taking better care of ourselves. Start sched-uling regular checkups with your doctor and keep a closer watch on your health. Stimulate your brain by reading. Enroll your-self in at least one class to learn to do something you’ve never done before. Develop a new hobby. If you haven’t yet learned to use a computer, start now! Challenge your thinking ability by working puzzles and crosswords, play card games, stay socially in-volved, volunteer at church or a local charity. Serv-ing others is a proven way to beat depression and improve your self-esteem. In short, keep yourself alert and active! * * *

Q: My husband and I are both college graduates with advanced degrees and know the value of a solid education. Our grandson is just graduating high school and although we are encouraging him to enroll in college, all he wants is to earn enough money to buy a truck and spend more time with his girlfriend. What other advice could we give him?

A: Although his attitude is fairly normal, it’s not the wisest one. However, many young people are questioning whether going to college is worth the time and effort, or if it even guarantees larger salaries than just on-the-job training. Unless a stu-dent is willing and has the grades and money to af-ford advanced degrees to become a doctor, a legal professional or work in a technical vocation, it be-comes debatable. Those with only a high school de-gree who don’t have corporate connections or some other inside track may never rise above a low-grade pay level. One career counselor I know remarked: “If you go to college, don’t major in something that can be done by a computer or can be outsourced cheap-er to China or India.” Employers now will seldom guarantee a better position or higher pay since they are so overloaded with applicants. From a broader point of view, earning a de-gree generates more self-esteem in becoming rec-ognized as a doer, offers the opportunity to enjoy a

broader historical perspective and viewpoint, brings more varied friendships, offers the possibility of find-ing a lifetime mate, and provides time and exposure to absorb more experiences and options. Now, a student’s big question is whether his or her diploma would be marketable. Beside the financial benefits of a college degree, discuss with your grandson his lifetime values. Does he have any goals? Do his future interests and skills match his current thinking? Convince him that one year of col-lege is an exploratory mission as well as an excellent opportunity to enhance his maturity. In his future, there will likely be the respon-sibilities of children, medical bills and a mortgage. However, more than ever, today’s students must fo-cus on their dual objectives of getting an education for a living and an education for making a living! One frustrated student who was unable to find a job put his resume in a wine bottle and threw it into the ocean. No replies yet!

Sun Shines on Tea Set Q: The enclosed photo features a por-celain tea set that is a service for six. It has been in our family for years and was given to me in 1946 for my wedding. Each piece is marked with the letters “R.S. Japan -- Made in Japan” and with the image of the rising sun. The set includes a teapot, a cream pitcher, sugar bowl, dessert plates, cups and saucers. Each piece is decorated with a luster glaze and all are in excellent condition. What can you tell me about my tea set?

A: As a rule, porcelain marked “Made in Japan” was made after 1920. The mark with rising sun image that you described was used from the late 1940s. Similar tea sets made in Japan are usually worth $125 to $175. * * *

Q: This mark is impressed on the back

of a stoneware plate that I found while going through my grandmother’s things when she was moving to a retirement home. She told me it was given to her when she was a child. She is in her nineties, so I know the plate is old. It is around 8 inches in diameter and is decorated with gray crackle glaze and trimmed with cobalt blue rabbits around the rim. It is in mint condi-tion. There are no chips or cracks. Anything you can tell me about the his-tory of this plate will be greatly appreciated.

A: Your plate was made by Dedham Pottery in Dedham, Mass. The pottery was founded in 1866 as Chelsea Keramic Art Works in Chelsea, Mass. In 1889, they closed and reopened several years later as Chelsea Pottery U.S. The name was finally changed to Dedham Pottery when they relocated to Dedham in 1896. The glaze is known as gray craquelle and was developed by owner, Hugh Robertson. The spider-web veining was achieved after the firing pro-cess and during the cooling. The cobalt blue animals, birds and flowers were hand painted by their accom-plished decorators. Joseph Linden Smith designed the rabbit mo-tif, and it was so popular that it was decided to use as the company logo. Rabbits that face left were found on early pieces and highly prized by collectors. Also, pieces signed by the decorator are very desirable and more valuable than those without a signature. The pottery closed in 1943 due to escalating manufacturing costs and a limited number of skilled artisans. Collectors alert: Dedham pottery has been reproduced in Massachusetts for over 25 years. Your early 1900 plate would probably be worth $250 to $350. Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P. O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Items of a general interest will be answered in this column. by Anne McCollam Creators News Service Where Tebow Goes, We

Go (Again) The initial question at the press conference for the New England Patriots’ early summer train-ing camp said it all. “Coach, I cover politics for a TV station in New Hampshire, but I’m here today,” he said. Patriots coach Bill Belichick seemed unmoved by the man’s credentials (sportswriters laughed). The question wasn’t all that important or groundbreak-ing, despite the reporter’s Concord and Keene political pedigree. Essentially what he asked was, “What do you think of random guys like me showing up in Foxboro on a rainy day, for a mini-camp news conference, asking you questions about your pre-sumed third-string quarterback?” Belichick, for all of his genius on the field and in the locker room, has never been known to be all that insightful or giving to the press at conferences like these. Patient and reserved, he was asked more than a dozen times about newly signed Tim Tebow, and he gave the same exact answer each time: We signed him because he’s a talented player who is smart and works hard, and we thought he could help the team blah blah blah, et cetera, ad nauseum. The twittersphere erupted when he was signed.“Not watching Sportscenter for at least the next few days. #Tebow” @Thepbird123“ESPN is applying the proper amount of coverage to #Tebow, in the same way Tammy Faye Bakker applied the proper amount of makeup.” @Damon-Bruce The sports talk radio spectrum was abuzz (I don’t think you can call radio a “sphere”). As I spun the dial, the conversation was essentially the same: We are all talking about this signing; we are all talking about this guy; and why are we spending so much time talking about this signing or this guy?If there’s anything I truly dislike about Tim Tebow it’s that he somehow inspires an awful lot of meta-journalism (newsmen talking about the news business), but that’s not his fault. And while most people wouldn’t come out and admit it, the reason why he garners so much attention is because he is outwardly Christian -- not because he had an excit-ing run as the Broncos quarterback a few seasons ago and won a playoff game. He is not despised for being a Christian; just the opposite, he is revered for his beliefs, and that is what appears to rankle people the most. Tavaris Jackson had a run with the Seattle Seahawks a few seasons ago, and on the same day Tebow was signed by New England, Jackson was cut by the Buffalo Bills. Tebow’s story garnered nearly 3,000 news stories, according to Google News. Jackson’s plight? Not so much ... about 222. So yeah, it’s the Christian thing. Everybody seems to want to throw the guy to the lions (Detroit, like the rest of the NFL and the Canadian Football League, passed), but that’s not going to happen in New England. No, on Sundays, the only talk about resurrection will be confined to the chapels and churches of New England, not Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.

Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City.

Professional Golf Tips with Tina Mickelson

Wide stance for driver The dreaded pop-up is one of the most common misses when hitting with the driver. This is generally the result of the downswing being too steep. To promote a more shallow swing, widen your stance at address when hitting your driver. Your feet should be just wider than your shoulders. If you feel that your shoulder turn is limited or your weight transfer is off, then you have widened your stance too much. You should feel like you are still able to turn freely to your position at the top of the swing. And your swing shouldn’t feel all that different. You will just be entering the hitting area from a more shallow angle, allowing you to “sweep” the ball off the tee instead of chopping at it.

latex bald caps. The members create music with a number of unique instruments fashioned from ordinary items such as PVC pipe, flexible fiberglass rods, ball bearings, and surgical tubing. The group is also well-known for its two-story drum wall with seven percussion stations. The musicians never speak, sing, or make any vocal sounds on stage. After the show they do not speak to audience members, but will sign autographs with a smudge of blue paint.

• Legend has it that the white flag has represented surrender since the 15th century. During the Hundred Years War between France and England, multicolored flags became popular among European armies. When an army wished to cease hostilities, it raised a white flag. The Geneva Convention officially recognized it as such in 1949.

• Surveys reveal that those who drive red cars are perceived as being high-energy people with dynamic, outgoing personalities - and sexier!

ENDANGERED SIGHTS & SOUNDS (cont’d):• How long has it been since you’ve used a

typewriter eraser? Or, if you’re younger, have you moved your belongings into a long-unused desk, only to find a strange-looking gadget with fiber-like hairs bushing out of one end? What you’ve found is a typewriter eraser. Usually shaped like a pencil, the tip was made of an especially-abrasive rubber, which was used to “erase” the typing error. The other end featured a small brush made of stiff plastic strands that was used to sweep the remnants of the erasure off the page.

• There’s no shortage of litter on the ground to-day, but thankfully, we no longer see discarded pull-tabs. The tabs on older easy-open beverage cans pulled completely off the can. People who walked in bare feet were constantly dodging these carelessly-dropped metal hazards.

• The rhythmic “beep” of the scanner is the musical accompaniment to the supermarket checkout line. But if you’ve ever wondered where the cliché of saying “ka-ching!” in re-lation to money comes from, that’s the sound that the old-style electric, not electronic, cash registers made. Cashiers of that era had to manually punch a series of buttons to ring up your purchase, followed by a smack of the “total” button with the heel of the hand.

• “Do you want your carbons?” used to be an automatic question asked by merchants after you’d signed for a credit card payment. At that time, credit card receipts were filled out by hand in triplicate, with a small piece of carbon paper inserted between each sheet. It didn’t take long for thieves to realize they could retrieve the used carbons from the trash and steal valuable credit card information. Once that scam gained popularity, waiters and cashiers regularly of-fered the carbons to customers, giving them the opportunity to destroy them.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM TIDBITS!

SCARY MOVIESby Ryan Toepfer

Some people just seem to love having the living daylights scared out of them. Why else would horror and suspense movies be so popular? To celebrate Halloween, Tidbits goes behind the scenes of some classic thrillers.• When Alfred Hitchcock purchased the film

rights for Psycho, he also bought up as many copies of the original novel as he could find, hoping to keep the story’s ending a secret.

• The famous shower scene of Psycho was filmed using a double for Norman Bates, as Anthony Perkins was appearing in a play (Greenwillow)in New York at the time. The first time Perkins actually saw that scene was back at the studio, watching the daily “rushes,” and he said he was just as scared as everyone else.

• Take a close look at Michael Myers’ mask in the 1978 camp classic Halloween. Does the face look familiar? The movie was filmed on such a tight budget, that the prop department had to make do with what they had. For Myers’ disguise, they used an old Captain Kirk (StarTrek) mask, which they spray painted white and then re-shaped the eyeholes.
