This week Tidbits provides a glimpse into the life of one of the greatest composers of all time, a musical genius who overcame a crushing disability to bring his timeless compositions to the world.

• Ludwig Van Beethoven was born in Bonn,Germany, on December 16, 1770, to Johann andMaria Beethoven. Of the seven childrenborn tohisparents,Ludwigand twoyoungerbrothers were the only children in this family to survive infancy.

• Ludwig’sfatherwasemployedasatenorsingerat the court of the Elector of Cologne. He also taught piano and violin and was Ludwig’sfirst music teacher. A harsh and impatientdisciplinarian given to heavy drinking, he often drove young Ludwig to tears by demandingabsolute perfection at the keyboard.

•He recognized his son’s unusual abilities andexploited him at an early age by touting him as another Mozart. He lied about Ludwig’sreal age, stating he was younger so he would appear even more prodigious. For many years, Beethovendidnotknowhisrealage, anddidn’tlearn until later in life that hewasfive yearsolder than he thought.

• By age 30,Beethovenwas becoming awell-known composer and seemed on his way to a brilliant musical career, but the disastrous indications of deafness were already becoming evident.Byage31,thesymptomshadbecome

so profound that they were severely effecting his quality of life.

•His correspondence to a friend conveyed hisdespair:“Myearswhistleandroarincessantly, night and day. I can frankly say that I am leading a miserable life.” In the midst of this, he suffered from excruciating headaches and severe stomach pain, and his despair frequently ledhimtothoughtsofsuicide.Itisn’tsurprisingthatmuchofBeethoven’smusicseemsdramaticand turbulent, an expression of the torture he endured daily.

•Having never learned the discipline of self-control, Beethoven was prone to untamed

Each year approx- imately 25-30 million evergreen Christmas trees are sold in the United States. The top tree-producing states are Oregon, North Carolina and Michigan. It takes about four years for a tree to be ready for sale, but most are not sold until they are around 15 years old and 6 to 7 feet tall. The most popular Christmas trees are Douglas, Fraser, noble and balsam fir, as well as scotch, Virginia and white pine.

● You might be surprised to learn that there are people who study how air quality, humid-ity, the hardness of the water and pollution affect people’s hair. According to these re-searchers, the worst American cities for your tresses are Corpus Christi, Texas; Olympia, Wash.; and Pittsburgh.

● In a survey conducted by the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research, it was found that two-thirds of Americans believe they are smarter than the average Ameri-can.

● If you happen to be traveling in India and are passing through the town of Deshnoke, you might want to check out the Karni Mata temple -- but not if you have an aversion to rodents: Karni Mata is the rat goddess. Visi-tors can dine at the temple, but they have to watch out for the more than 20,000 rats min-gling with the guests. Don’t worry, though; if a rat runs across your feet, it’s considered to be good luck.

● Ever wonder what the world’s deadliest animal is? It’s the lowly mosquito. Thanks to the diseases it spreads, it kills more humans than any other animal on the planet.

● In 2004, a record was set for the world’s farthest pizza delivery when a Domino’s Pizza in London delivered a vegetarian su-preme pizza to Melbourne, Australia -- a distance of 10,532 miles. • Someofhis locksofhair, alongwithseveralbone fragments, were examined during an autopsy years later. Chemical analyses revealed unusually high concentrations of lead, which likely accounted for much of the headache and stomach pain he endured in his later years. The three resonating bones in his ear canals were found to be almost fused together, explaining his total deafness.

•AlockofhishairisondisplayinapermanentexhibitatCalifornia’sSanJoseStateUniversity, alongwithsomeofhisoriginalmanuscripts.Alarge collection of the hearing aids he used in his lifetime, such as the piano sounding rods and special ear horns, can be viewed at the BeethovenHouseMuseuminBonn,Germany.

• Ludwig Van Beethoven is acknowledged asone of the giants of classical music, and often referredtoasoneofthe“threeBs”,alongwithBachandBrahms.Hisinfluenceonthegenreofclassical music was profound indeed. ■

• According to the Karo Syrup website(karosyrup.com), pecan pie had its beginnings with their syrup. The corn syrup, in dark or light, introduced in1902,definitelyhelped tospread the popularity of pecan pie. The website

states that in 1930, “Thewife of a corporatesales executive discovered a new use for corn syrup.Amixture of corn syrup, sugar, eggs, vanilla and pecans baked in a pie shell produces thenowclassicPecanPiedestinedtobecomeaworld-classfavorite.DownSouth,today,thatsamerecipecontinuestobecalledKaroPie.”

TUES., SEPT. 27

Q: What is the lovely Annabeth Gish up to lately? I loved her on “The X-Files.” -- Gabrielle V., Portland, Ore.

A: An-nabeth is starring alongside Pierce Brosnan in A&E’s miniseries “Bag of Bones,” which is based on the Ste-phen King novel. In the miniseries, best-selling novelist Mike Noonan (Pierce) can’t stop grieving after the death of his wife, Jo (Annabeth). A dream inspires him to return to the couple’s lakeside retreat in western Maine. Of course, mysterious things are going to happen. Go to celebrityextraonline.com to read my full interview with Annabeth about her role in this series, which premieres Dec. 12 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. ***

Q: I loved seeing a different side of Bill Pullman in “Torchwood: Miracle Day.” Where else can I see him? -- Betty T., via e-mail

A: Bill is headlining TNT’s Mystery Movie Night by starring in “Scott Turow’s Innocent,” which is the sequel to “Presumed Innocent,” picking up the lives of Rusty and Barbra Sabich two decades later. The movie opens with Rusty being accused of murdering his wife, mirroring the accusation he was cleared of years before with his mistress. You can catch your favorite stars this winter in crime-novel adaptations of books by authors like Scott Turow, Mary Higgins Clark, Sandra Brown and more. While Bill himself is not a big television watcher, he loves the artistic opportunities it pres-ents to actor and viewers, telling me: “I like the im-age of people on their sofas on a winter night just getting down with a good, compelling thriller. Makes me want to watch more television.” Check your local listings for the date and time of each movie’s airing during TNT’s Mystery Movie Night series. And stop by celebrityextraonline.com for my entire interview with Bill. ***

Q: I was reading that Universal is go-ing to pull the “Harry Potter” movies from the shelves soon. Is this true? -- Andrew R., via e-mail

A: On Dec. 29, Universal is indeed pulling “Harry Potter” movies from the shelves -- right after the Christmas rush -- and offer them only on a spo-radic basis, like Disney has done with its animated classics. If you can, I’d hold off on buying the eight-disc boxed set featuring years one through seven. It contains only the movie discs with no special fea-tures or extras. At the end of 2012, Universal plans to release a more comprehensive boxed set of all eight movies, with the extras and special treats we’ve all been waiting for. ***

Q: I loved Sheldon’s “Soft Kitty Song” on “The Big Bang Theory.” My roommate told me I can buy the Soft Kitty stuffed animal. Please tell me this is true! -- Paula F., Youngstown, Ohio

A: Just in time for Christmas, Stylin Online

Annabeth Gish

is offering the official Soft Kitty cat and T-shirt for all you “Big Bang” fans. The stuffed cat will sing you the “Soft Kitty Song” from the show, and it’s available at StylinOnline.com

Don’t Be Embarrassed to Ask Money Questions Dear Readers: I recently asked a group of women of all ages to tell me the money questions they most wanted answered. Because they could remain anonymous, the responses poured in:

Q: I’m a stay-at-home mom and haven’t had a paycheck since I was a teenager. Will I be eligible for Social Security benefits?

A. If you are married, you will be eligible. Your Social Security retirement benefits are tied to your husband’s. You can file when he does, pro-vided you’re at least 62 at that time. Your monthly check will be equal to 50 percent of his, if he waits until “full retirement age” to begin collecting benefits (65, 66 or 67 depending on the year he was born). If he opts to begin drawing early at 62, then your benefit will be reduced to 37.5 percent of his monthly check. (If you’re single, divorced or wid-owed, the amounts vary.) We’re not talking a lot of money here under the very best of circumstances, so plan on it as a supplement, not enough to live on. Go to the Social Security Administration website at www.ssa.gov, and check out the FAQs. This site is remarkably user-friendly. * * *

Q. If my parents die with a lot of debt, will I be responsible for paying it?

A. You will not be responsible for their debts, unless you cosigned for a loan with them or you are a joint account holder on their credit card accounts. Your parents’ debts will be paid out of their estate (everything they own, including real estate). Once their funeral expenses are taken care of, unpaid creditors are next in line to be paid. If

there is insufficient money or assets to pay all cred-itors, then the estate must be divided up as equally as possible, with secured creditors (the mortgage holder, for instance) receiving priority. If your parents die with little to no assets, their creditors eat the loss. Talk to your parents about their estate planning. Check out www.aarp.org, or type, “how to talk to your parents about es-tate planning,” into a search engine. There’s good, free advice available. * * *

Q. How can I break my payday loan cycle?

A. Payday loan stores, check-cashing outfits and finance companies are making these small short-term, high-rate loans. They can charge 15 percent interest a week, so if you can’t pay off the loan immediately, the next week you owe 30 percent. You can see where this is going, right? Maybe you only needed $100 to cover a short-term need, and a payday loan seemed so easy. You decided to get another one to cover that loan, and before you knew it, you owed more in fees than you ever borrowed. Figure out exactly how much you owe, and then figure out how to generate the money as quickly as possible. Ask for help from a friend, fam-ily member or credit union. Sell everything you can to raise that money, or pick up a weekend job. To learn more about why you should never take out these loans again, read “The Truth about Payday Loans” at www.Credit.com. * * * Do you have a question for Mary? The Reality of Babies and Dogs In comic strips, in country songs, in Disney films, dogs and babies go together like peanut butter and jelly. But in real time, where potential dangers and acts of instinct and nature can’t be edited out, dogs and babies require constant supervision and should never be left alone in a room together. Recently, in Jacksonville, N.C., a 12-week-old pit bull chewed the toes off the left foot of a 4-month-old infant as the child’s mother slept in the same room. Robie Lynn Jenkins had taken medication that induced a sleep deep enough to drown out her infant’s cries through the night. Jenkins’ boyfriend, Tremayne Spillman, was also asleep in the room. The couple claim they were watching the puppy as a favor to a friend who is in jail on gun charges. They now face charges of their own -- felony child abuse. Before everyone screams, “Pit bull!” a re-minder: Only a month earlier, in Lexington, Ky., the owners of a Native American Indian Dog spotted the family pup trotting toward the woods behind their back yard with their newborn infant in its jaws. Four-day-old Alexander James Smith suffered two col-lapsed lungs, a skull fracture and numerous cuts and bruises. A year before that, in Tulsa, Okla., a 6-week-old black Labrador fatally mauled 2-month-old Zane Alen Earles as he sat unattended in an infant swing in the family’s living room. Several relatives were home at the time. In January 2008, 8-month-old Andrew Stein was inexplicably and fatally mauled by a 7-year-old chocolate Doberman pinscher, the Stein family pet from puppyhood, with no history of aggression. And in 2001, a 4-pound Pomeranian killed a 6-week-old girl in Los Angeles as she lay in her crib. Afterward, LA sheriff’s Deputy Cruz Solis comment-ed, “Obviously it doesn’t take much to kill a 6-week-old baby, but it’s not something that happens with that breed.” Obviously, it is. The point is, no dog, no matter how small, no matter how gentle, no matter how proven his tem-perament, no matter his perceived love of children,

MARY, MARY, QUITE CONTRARY

by Pat Wilhite

What does a real estate agent do in a down market? Plant a vegetable garden, of course! OK, done that, now what? Should I start picking off

the leaves and making salads? That doesn’t seem quite right since I only did the planting two days ago. A voice in my head says “oh my, Mistress Pat, you better call someone”

The good news is that I do know what to do when listing and selling homes. I should, it has been my bread and butter for 12 years, starting with Heritage Palms C.C. in Indio, a 55+ community of 1004 homes.

Lately I’ve had the pleasure of representing several buyers in the NEW phase of Sun City Shadow Hills in Indio. It’s the same projected size as Heritage Palms, (1,000 homes) but everything is brand spanking NEW, including the Clubhouse.

One of my buyers refused to spend a penny over $200,000 to buy a new 2bd/2ba/den home and to my amazement, her offer was accepted. Just when you think you know everything, she ended up showing me how it works when a very skillful buyer holds firm. And, guess what, I ended up buying myself a new home at Sun City Shadow Hills, all perks included. Now when someone asks me what I do for a living, I tell them “I’m a Buyer’s Agent for new homes at Sun City Shadow Hills in Indio.”

Use me as your agent in a senior community, and don’t be surprised if you get everything on your wish list, PLUS a bushel (?) basket of fresh vegetables, courtesy of …….

Dr. David Lipschitz

WARNING: Reading Tidbits is habit forming

Sitting Down Too Long Is Hazardous to Health When visiting my mother in South Africa, my biggest pet peeve is how much she expects me to sit. Here are the almost-daily comments from my mom: “Come and sit and have breakfast with me;” or “Come and sit. Your sister is coming for tea;” or “I haven’t seen you for a year and all you want to do is rush around! Come and sit and spend time with your mother.” Now I find that sitting may be hazardous to our health. A new study published in the Euro-pean Heart Journal found that the risk of colon and breast cancer was significantly higher in those who spent the better part of the day sitting. And the risk is higher irrespective of whether you are sedentary or active, fat or thin or have multiple medical dis-eases. The researchers maintain that sitting longer is another measure of a sedentary lifestyle. They also showed that taking an activity break frequently during the day reduced body weight, evidence of inflammation and other measures that indicate in-creased cancer risk. Because of this finding, the American Institute for Cancer Research recom-mends that those who spend most of the day sitting take a 1- to 2-minute activity break every hour. But higher risks of death from sitting are not limited to cancer. A 2010 study in the American Journal of Epidemiology showed that the longer the time spent sitting during the day, the greater the risk of death most frequently from heart disease. We all know of the link between exercise and improved outcomes for heart disease. But there is compelling evidence linking exercise to a decreased risk of breast, colon and, to a lesser ex-tent, prostate and ovarian cancers. For example, in population studies, those who exercised most fre-quently had a 30 percent reduction in risk of colon cancer and a 28 percent reduction in risk for breast cancer. Increased aerobic activity and resistance training (exercising with weights) both decrease cancer risk. There are many positive effects of exercise on the body’s metabolism that may help protect against cancer. Exercise significantly boosts the immune function that increases the ability to rec-ognize and kill abnormal precancerous cells before they can become a cancer. In addition, exercise helps promote a normal weight, better metabolism,

a lower risk of diabetes and optimal hormonal lev-els. In the case of the colon, these changes may improve colonic function that, in turn, reduces the time cells lining the colon are exposed to car-cinogens in the stool that can cause cell damage and cancer. Similarly, improved immune function and better hormonal balance may protect against breast and prostate cancer. Clearly, an active lifestyle helps prevent many diseases that afflict us. The more exercise the better; but now everyone, including those who are active and fit and whose occupation requires days of sitting, must consider the importance of a 1- to 2-minute exercise break every hour. Perhaps climb a few flights of stairs or if you are anything like me and in your late 60s, that frustrating but much needed hourly bathroom break may indeed have some merit! No matter how healthy you are, how perfect your weight or how much you exercise, there are other factors that can lead to a higher risk of cancer. Most importantly is the evidence linking a higher fat intake to an increased cancer risk. Paradoxically, a too low-fat diet that leads to weight gain, altered metabolism and diabetes can also contribute to an increased cancer risk. The best diet is the prudent, don’t-diet diet that contains the right fats (olive and canola oils, omega 3 fatty acids), lean meat or fatty fish, as much fruits and vegetables as possible and carbohydrates in moderation. In addition to eating right and exercising, beware of stress, depression, low self-esteem and lack of passion for life. These traits have profound negative effects on immune function and can lead to weight gain and diabetes as well as contribute to a sedentary lifestyle that than can substantially contribute to cancer risk. Staying healthy and preventing disease is a true balancing act, requiring that every aspect of your life is as ideal as possible, a worthy goal even if difficult to achieve.

lifelonghealth

Dr. David Lipschitz

his intelligence, his experience, his playfulness or his affection for you, should ever be left alone in a room with a small child -- for even a second. It’s not about the breed of dog. It’s about the fragility of an infant. Babies are vulnerable. They lack the strength and coordination to defend them-selves. And neither baby nor dog possesses the abil-ity to communicate with the other. A little ambigu-ous roughhousing is all it takes for a small child to be seriously wounded -- even by a small dog. What does each of these incidents have in common? A parent or close relative was in the home but not in the room during each of these encounters. And most of these tragedies involved family pets that had no history of aggression. When it comes to babies and dogs, it’s im-portant to know that there are no predictors to what might happen. The only way to ensure the safety of your child is to keep baby and dog securely sepa-rated in the absence of close parental supervision. It’s best for the baby. And it’s best for the dog. Woof!

No Need to ‘Register’ With Social Security Q: I will be 65 in February 2012. I’m still working and plan to keep working until I’m 70. A friend told me that I have to register with the Social Security Administration three months before my 65th birthday even though I don’t plan to take my Social Security yet. Is this true?

A: There really is no such thing as “regis-tering” with Social Security -- at any age. You simply file for your retirement benefits a couple of months before you want them to begin. And in your case, it sounds like that’ll be about five years down the road. I think what your friend was trying to tell you is that you probably will want to sign up for Part A Medicare to start at age 65. And you would do that through your Social Security office about three months before your 65th birthday. There are two main parts of Medicare. Part A is hospital coverage, and it’s free. Or rather, you paid for it -- and continue to pay for it -- with your payroll taxes. (If you look at your pay stub, you’ll see a deduction box labeled “Medicare Tax.” That’s buy-ing you the Part A hospital coverage of Medicare.) Even though you likely are covered by your employ-er’s insurance, you might as well take Part A, just because you’ve already bought it. And there may be times when you need it. Also, there’s a chance that your employer’s insurance might require you to take Part A.

The other main part of Medicare is Part B, or medical insurance. Part B essentially provides partial coverage of all health care costs not associat-ed with inpatient hospital bills taken care of by Part A. Medical insurance usually costs about $100 per month. (It’s not paid for by your Medicare tax de-ductions.) However, you do not need to take it while you’re still working and covered by your employer’s insurance. So you should sign up for Part A now. And then you should sign up for Social Security benefits and Part B Medicare coverage when you retire.

Q: My wife is a German citizen living in this country. She has not worked, so she has no Social Security coverage. When I die, will she get widow’s benefits on my record? She may go back to Germany when I die. If she does, will her Social Security check follow her there? And what about Medicare?

A: Assuming your wife is older than 60 when you die, she’ll get widow’s benefits on your Social Security record. And if she moves back to Germany, she’ll continue to be eligible for widow’s benefits while she’s living there. The rules regarding payment of Social Secu-rity benefits while outside the United States can get really complicated. But as a general rule, if you’re a citizen of a country that has a Social Security treaty agreement with the United States -- and Germany is one of those countries -- then there usually is no problem. To see a list of those treaty countries, visit SocialSecurity.gov. Medicare, however, is a different story. Your wife won’t be covered by Medicare once she leaves this country. One other point: I assume you know that you don’t have to die for your wife to be eligible for spou-sal benefits on your record. Once she turns 62, she can get benefits as a dependent wife on your account -- even while you’re still alive and kicking!

Q: I worked as a teacher in Texas most of my life, so I didn’t pay into Social Security all of those years. But after I retired from teach-ing, I took a couple of odd jobs here and there (like dog-sitting and house-sitting for friends and neighbors). I finally had enough work to get my 40 quarters, so I went to my Social Se-

curity office to file for retirement benefits. And a woman there told me I wasn’t eligible for any-thing because I didn’t work at legitimate jobs, so she wouldn’t take my Social Security claim. What is your opinion about this?

A: I don’t have anywhere near enough information to tell if the work you did was “legiti-mate” or not. But I can suggest something to you. You should insist on filing a claim for Social Secu-rity retirement benefits. (You have every right in the world to do so.) The claim will probably be denied. But formal appeal rights come with that denial. As part of that appeal, you can present evidence about your work to try to prove that you really earned your 40 quarters. If you don’t file a formal claim, all you have is one Social Security representative’s informal de-nial, which really represents nothing other than that person’s opinion. But by filing a claim, you can turn this into a legal process and present your case to the Social Security Administration.

Prostate Blood Test Far From Perfect DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I had my annual PSA test, and it came back 3.5 ng/ml. My doc-tor said anything below 4 is good. My past scores have never exceeded 0.5. I am concerned with the rate of increase from last year. Need I be? Should I get checked in six months to ease my mind? -- B.B.

ANSWER: PSA (prostate-specific antigen) is a blood test used for the detection of prostate can-cer. It’s far from being a perfect test, but it is the only one we have. Not only is the test imperfect, but ex-perts disagree on how the test numbers should be interpreted. Many insist that a man’s age should define what the normal range for it is. The younger the man, the lower should be the acceptable PSA. Results from large studies yield conflicting information. One study suggests that a PSA of 2.5 ng/ml ought to prompt additional testing, such as a prostate biopsy. Another large study uses 4 as the cutoff for ordering more investigation. And a third sets the upper limit of normal at 3.5. PSA velocity is another factor that enters into interpreting the test. If the PSA value increases in one year by 0.75 or more, then the possibility of can-cer exists and further testing is suggested -- a biopsy. Your value increased many times that number. I be-lieve you need to have that checked out soon. In fact, if a man has a PSA value of less than 4 on previous tests, and his PSA has increased by 0.35 in one year, that man should be advised to have a biopsy. The booklet on prostate enlargement and prostate cancer digs more deeply into these subjects. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1001W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My son had sur-gery for diverticulitis and was discharged from the hospital two days later. He had to return to the hospital because of terrible stomach pain. The doctor did a second surgery and submitted material to the lab. The report came back that he had C. diff. I would appreciate so much any

information on this. -- M.M.

ANSWER: C. difficile (diff-uh-SEAL) is a bacterium. It can be acquired anywhere, but most often in the hospital. In the digestive tract, it is a dis-tinct minority. However, antibiotics can kill off the normal bacteria in the tract and the C. difficile bac-terium then experiences explosive growth. That can cause minor intestinal problems to major intestinal catastrophes with voluminous diarrhea and fierce pain. All of this is due to toxins (poisons) produced by this germ. Stopping antibiotics is the first line of treat-ment. If that doesn’t bring relief, then the antibiotic metronidazole often cures patients. Should metro-nidazole fail, the antibiotic vancomycin is a trusted standby. Sometimes attempts to re-establish a nor-mal bacterial population for the colon are successful in ending the problem. ***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

A Safe Family Online Network If the possibility of having your personal information compromised online on Facebook or Myspace scares you, you’re not alone. But if you want a place to keep in touch with friends and relatives, what do you do? Sending in-dividual emails has its limitations -- several people can’t talk to each other at the same time. Sharing pictures of your grandchildren online is risky -- very risky -- because you don’t know where those pho-tos will end up. And if there’s a family event, you end up sending multiple emails to everyone. Enter Chattertree, an online site that ap-pears to be very safe and private. Instead of being a social online network, it’s a family and friends network. On Chattertree you can: --Create private family or friends “rooms,” even multiple rooms, perhaps one for family and one for friends. --Track dates with the calendar. --Be alerted quickly to important family events. --Upload photos and videos, and either share them with your whole family or just certain people. --Chat with individuals in your family and friends list, or as a whole group. --Have a video chat with six of your friends or family members. (The next time one of your chil-dren wants to buy you a video camera, say yes!) Best of all, those steps are detailed in how-to vid-eos that you can watch. Chatterbox has been certified as a TRUSTe Kid Privacy site, which means it’s a safe online environment for your grandchildren. Amazingly enough, Chattertree is free. Go to www.chattertree.com and look around.

Dear Doug

Creators News Syndicate

How Can We Stay Close to Our Family? Q: We recently moved to a retirement community in southern California and are now about 1,900 miles from our immediate family. We love our new life here and thoroughly enjoy the warm climate, but we miss the regular in-teraction we always had with our family -- the holiday gatherings, the kids’ birthdays, and so on. We are now feeling detached from the ones we love most, and it’s sometimes hard not to feel lonely. We call them weekly and play catch up, but sometimes we feel we may be intruding on their busy schedules. What is the best way for us to stay in close touch without feeling like we’re bothering them?

A: If you are using the phone as your only means of contact with your family, it’s definitely time for you to get a computer and start using email! The computer is today’s gold standard in communication, and you will quickly discover it is nothing short of a miracle. It is an absolute shame that only about 25 percent of those over age 65 are computer literate. Some of the reasons seniors say they are not inter-ested in owning and using a computer are: purchase cost, monthly fees, and fear of making the effort to learn how to use one. Others are simply stubborn and insist they have gotten along fine without a com-puter and they certainly don’t need one now. There are many opportunities to learn how to use computers. You can get free training at libraries, senior centers and from family and friends. Learning the few basics it takes to start sending and receiving emails is very, very simple. Ask a family member or friend to show you the versatility of what email al-lows you to do as well as how to utilize the Internet’s amazing, instantaneous search capabilities. Imagine receiving photos or videos of your grandchildren only hours or minutes after they were taken. How’s that for staying in close touch? This will open a whole new world for you! I believe your family would be thrilled if you let them know you would like to have a computer. It would definitely bring them much closer and minimize your loneliness. And who knows? You just might receive one from them as a holiday gift! * * *

Q: Although we have to watch our fi-nances closely, we do have a little extra cash right now. There are things we would like to use it for, but we feel guilty about spending money that our children would inherit. Some of our peers both playfully and often truthfully, tell us they plan to spend every dime for themselves and let their kids fend for themselves like they had to do. We can see their point, but we aren’t sure which is the right thing to do. We’d appre-ciate your viewpoints on this subject.

A: You have earned or saved your money, and it is your option to spend it or save it. You have earned it, and now have the opportunity to make a choice. In today’s bamboozling economy, there is strong evidence that the next generations will not

have the options we enjoy. Some questions worth asking yourselves in-clude: Do you believe you have sufficient assets to take care of yourselves for life? Are your children good money managers? Will your grandchildren need educational funds? Would your adult children use or invest your inheritance wisely? Are your chil-dren happily married? Do you have legal and trust documents signed that indicate your wishes? If not, should you set up trusts, tax advantage instruments or other legal documents to protect your assets? Now is the time to meet with a qualified es-tate attorney and ask him to set up your paper work. Later, if you want to make changes, it can be done in the event your circumstances change. If not, pro-crastination might interfere with your wishes!

CryptoQuip ---- ANSWER ----

Page 14: Vol. 7: #49 - EVERGREENS - 12/4/2011 Tidbits of Coachella Valley

Vase Decorated with Fire Breathing Dragon Q: The vase seen in this photo belonged to my mother-in-law and is probably 80 years old. I inherited it from her. I would like to know more about it and its value. There is a dragon in relief that curves around the vase; it has bright blue beads for eyes, and it is breathing smoke. Part of the dragon is outlined in blue and there are white dots on the edge of the top, base and the handles. It stands about 9 inches tall and is in excellent condition.

A: You have a Dragonware vase. Drag-onware is porcelain or pottery that has been made in Japan since the late 1800s. Although there are some exceptions, most pieces are decorated with matte gray that shades to black backgrounds. Drag-onware pieces were mostly decorative and included covered cigarette dishes, ashtrays, vases, tea sets, plates, cups and saucers. The white dots are called moriage and are frequently used on Japanese por-celain and pottery. Your vase would probably be worth in the area of $25 to $50.

Q: I have copied the mark that is on a set of china that my mother-in-law had in her basement. If I remember correctly, she said she got a piece every time she went to the movies. Each piece is decorated with a scene of a lute player serenading two women in a garden set-ting. The edges are trimmed with a gold filigree design. I was wondering if the dishes are worth anything other than sentimental value.

A: Limoges China Co. made your dishes. The firm was founded in Sebring, Ohio, in 1900. “China D’Or -- IT S 284” is the pattern name and number. They produced porcelain to compete with porcelain made in France. After a serious squab-ble with a Limoges, France, manufacturer over the name, the company changed its name to American Limoges China Co. They closed in 1955. In the early 1900s, movie theatres often of-fered premiums to increase attendance.

This pattern was made between 1930 and 1940. Each dish would probably be worth $5 to $20.

Q: I have a Valentine card that was sent to my mother-in-law in 1925. It was printed in Germany and is a pop-up. It has a gate of roses, behind that is an angel on a red heart next to a basket of roses. The greeting is “To My Valen-tine.” It is in very good condition. Is it worth anything?

A: Vintage Valentine cards are collectible.

Many pop-ups were made in Germany. Yours would probably be worth $25 to $50.

Keep your sockets stacked When I am working with a student, the first thing I look for in their swing is how balanced they are. In this case, the definition of balance is the way the sockets in your body remain aligned with each other. We human beings are designed with eight sock-ets: two in the shoulders, two in the hips, knees and ankles. The key to being in balance is to have the sockets on both the left and right sides in ver-tical alignment with each other. The goal in the golf swing is to keep these s o c k e t s aligned and in balance th roughou t the motion of the swing. Notice in the pho-tos that I am perfectly bal-anced with my sockets stacked in vertical alignment, both at address and in my back swing. The number one swing fault I see is allowing the sockets to slip laterally, getting the golfer “out of balance”. As soon as this happens you have to compensate by shifting back into balance as you make contact with the ball. That’s a miss hit. In order to achieve more power and more control, get in front of a mirror and work on keep-ing your sockets properly stacked and balanced throughout your swing.
