Q: Is TNT going to make another movie in “The Librarian” series? -- Bridget C., via e-mail

A: While “Li-brarian” star Noah Wyle has stated that there are no immedi-ate plans for another movie, he is definitely on board when they decide to make the next one. For now he is busy with his new TNT show (debut-ing June 10) “Falling Skies,” while “Librar-ian” executive pro-ducer, Dean Devlin, is busy with TNT’s “Leverage.” However, this might bode well for “The Librarian” series, as Noah said in an interview last summer: “I miss (‘The Librarian’) so much. In fact, one of the big reasons I wanted to do ‘Falling Skies’ for TNT is that Dean’s got his show (‘Leverage’), I’ve got my show, and we can apply [pressure] to TNT to make some more ‘Li-brarian’ movies.” ***

Q: I just watched an excellent movie called “Shooter” with Mark Wahlberg. There also is a Donnie Wahlberg, I think, on “Blue Bloods.” Are they related? Also, was one of them in the Backstreet Boys? -- Nancy G., Punta Gorda, Fla.

A: Mark and Donnie Wahlberg are brothers. The elder Wahlberg, Donnie (41), got his start in New Kids on the Block back in 1984; however, the group didn’t really break out until 1988’s “Hangin’ Tough,” NKOTB’s second album. The group broke up in 1995. Donnie then embarked on an acting ca-reer, co-starring in “Ransom,” “The Sixth Sense,” “Band of Brothers” and “Boomtown.” While he hasn’t given up his acting career, he and the rest of the New Kids have reunited, and this summer they are touring with, ironically, the Backstreet Boys. In the late ‘80s/early ‘90s, brother Mark, 39, had some success with Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, whose single “Good Vibrations” became a No. 1 hit in 1991. Mark segued into film after doing numerous ad campaigns for Calvin Klein, co-star-ring in “The Basketball Diaries,” “Boogie Nights,” “The Perfect Storm” and “The Departed” (for which he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Acad-emy Award), among many others. ***

However, I am unable to afford the month-ly fee. I called DirecTV and explained my financial situation. The company gave me a $150 credit to my account and a $20 discount for six months. Dear Terry: I hate to break it to you, but they don’t care about you or your financial situation. DirecTV is thinking only of its bottom line. The people there are desperate to keep you in the asset column of their balance sheet. Pretty smart on their part to offer you a concession to keep you on the hook. You didn’t ask, but because you wrote to me, here’s some advice: As soon as that credit runs out, cancel the service. You cannot afford the luxury of satellite television when you are not working. You need to be living the most frugal lifestyle possible because you have no idea how long you’ll be with-out a paycheck. * * * Dear Mary: Do you know of any reason that not having a land line would be damaging to my credit or would negatively affect job searching? I am a single woman with a 16-year-old son. We use our cell phones almost exclusively to stay in touch with each other, family and friends. -- Sylvia, Oklahoma Dear Sylvia: I can think of two reasons you might need a land line, neither of them having any-thing to do with maintaining good credit or qualify-ing for employment. 1) If you have a home security system that is monitored, your signals are sent via your land line. 2) If cell phone service in your area

is not tied in to your area’s 911 emergency service yet, losing the land line could put you at risk. Check with your area’s emergency services about 911 and cell phones before you ditch your land line. * * * Dear Mary: I added my grandson to two of my credit cards so that he has the option to buy what-ever he needs while he is away at college. I didn’t realize that his student loans are now on my credit report. I currently have a credit score of 750. What should I do? -- Renee, via e-mail

Dear Renee: You need to contact the credit bureaus to dispute these accounts as not yours. Explain to them that your grandson is either a co-signer or an authorized user (however you added him) on the two credit cards but that you are not a party to any of his student loans. I’m quite certain this is just a clerical glitch that can be corrected

easily. And until you can get it straightened out, I do not believe any of his student loans will ad-versely affect your credit score. However, you do need to get this fixed as quickly as possible.

It is the chief occupation of mankind.” The following letter from a reader demonstrates that it is certain-ly the chief occupation of those who champion the companionship of a particular canine at any cost. “We recently got an 8-month-old yellow lab from a family with three small children. The lady said the dog could be aggressive and had nipped at her 2-year-old. “She is a very nervous puppy -- jumps at the slight-est movement or noise. She also jumps and twitches when she sleeps. We have experienced her aggres-sion now, and it is quite scary. The second morning we had her, something spooked her and she would not let us near our truck. The doors were all open, and she sat in the driver’s seat growling and showing her teeth. I got a treat and put it on the ground near us. When I said “release,” she got out, snatched the treat and jumped right back in. She calmed down, but was nervous all day after that. “She has showed her teeth a few times, and we’re not sure how to handle it. I read that it isn’t always good to approach or discipline her when she is show-ing her teeth and growling because it could initiate an attack. I know that she is scared and confused. Within one week she stayed in four different houses, with all new people. We’ve had her for a week, and we’d love to keep her. We have no children, but we have nieces and nephews around often. We need to break her of these aggressive behaviors or we will not be able to run the risk of her hurting a child. “She is a good dog -- excellent when playing fetch, gives up the ball or toy every time. However, she gets aggressive with some of her toys when indoors. We gave her a pig’s ear last night and she got extremely aggressive. Every time we moved, she growled and showed her teeth -- even when we were nowhere near her. She came out of it, but again she was ner-vous for the rest of the night.” This is akin to buying a car with no brakes because you like the ashtray and don’t smoke. With all the great dogs in shelters that need homes, why insist on the one you know is aggressive? It is one thing to root for the underdog and quite another to invite the snarling underdog to share your home. Did John Lennon do us all in when he wrote “All You Need is Love”? The 40 years that have trans-pired since that release have taught me that this, like

Fine-Tuning Our Gait Can Allay Knee Osteoarthritis Osteoarthritis is the most common chronic disease in America, afflicting the back, knees, hips, hands and shoulders. This aggravating condition can cause disability, pain, difficulty with movement and other activities, and a poorer quality of life. In particular, osteoarthritis of the knee affects as many as 20 million Americans. In a recent report in Nature Reviews Rheuma-tology, researchers reviewed the role of mechanical and exercise approaches to improve symptoms and reduce the progression of osteoarthritis of the knee. Data clearly show that the way we walk is a major factor leading to the arthritis. The process of walking -- though generally unappreciated -- is a highly coordinated activ-ity. Maintaining proper, physiological movements of your hip, knee and ankle joints can drastically reduce your risk of disease. Walking is associated with outward movement of the leg below the knee, referred to as adduction. The more this occurs, the more pressure is put on the inside of the knee. Over time, increased pres-sure leads to damage and osteoarthritis develops. Walking with our toes pointing straight or inward is associated with a higher risk of osteoarthritis than walking with our toes pointing outward. With each step forward, the ankle and foot bends upward, known as eversion, which removes pressure from the knee. While walking, it turns out that the amount of adduction, ankle and foot movement and the way we point our toes are greatly affected by the shoes we wear. Observations show that wearing high-heeled shoes increases adduction by 18 percent to 23 percent and prevents the ankle from moving upward by 90 percent. Not surprisingly, the need for knee replacement surgery is much more common in women than in men. High heels are not the only culprits for poor walking mechanics. Comfortable thick-soled sup-portive shoes are not particularly good for the knees, either. Thick, rigid soles prevent movement of the ankle while simultaneously promoting adduc-tion of the lower leg. So, what is the best shoe to prevent knee osteoarthritis? Amazingly, the best option is no shoe at all. Walking barefoot is most beneficial in improving the mechanics of movement. Consider shoes that mimic barefoot walking. These include thin-soled shoes, such as flat walking shoes or flip-flops. Thinner and more flexible soles offer sub-stantial benefits over thick-soled support shoes.

Orthotics can offer another important solution to reducing pain and progression of osteoarthritis. Lateral wedge insoles, which incline the outside of the foot upward by 5 degrees to 15 degrees, have been shown to dramatically relieve symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee. In addition, knee braces can help improve gait and reduce pressure on the knee. Worn throughout the day and for periods as long as 12 months, these braces can help reduce pain and improve mobility in a substantial number of patients. For greatest results, the patient must compulsively wear the brace. Sadly, for many adults, the bulky nature of the brace and difficulties putting it on make this therapy impractical. Finally, gait training and muscle strengthening by an expert physical therapist is critically impor-tant. Initially, a careful evaluation of gait will provide guidance for the most appropriate footwear and in-soles. Gait training can help assure that toes point out and that adduction is minimized. Exercises to strengthen the muscles that support the knee and improve gait assure minimal inappropriate pressure on the knee. As the disease progresses, mechanical ab-normalities and pain can become very severe and surgical replacement is the only option. While most patients sing the praises of this operation, it must be emphasized that surgery should always be a last resort. With appropriate and conservative man-agement of osteoarthritis, you not only reduce the need for surgery, but you also decrease the poten-tial of worsening disability and suffering. Remember, no surgery is 100 percent safe or “easy.” The way we walk and our footwear affect the severity and level of disability caused by os-teoarthritis. The evidence is compelling that good choices and a commitment to prevention are the best health investments any of us can make.

Tips for Finding Information on the Social Security Website Q: I really love your column and the in-formation you provide. One reason I appreciate your advice is because I find it so hard to find answers to my questions on Social Security’s website. Did they purposely design it to confuse people?

A: I’ve got to be a bit diplomatic and tactful in my answer. As a former long-time employee of the Social Security Administration, I’ve got to admit that some of the people involved in designing and maintaining Social Security’s website are friends of mine. Although, like me, I think several of those old friends have retired and all of us old fuddy- duddies are convinced the agency has gone downhill since we left. While we were there, we kept the place hum-ming like a well-oiled machine. But now that we’re gone, the agency -- including its website -- is starting to show some cracks around the edges. (Isn’t that what everyone thinks about his or her old place of work after retirement?) OK, I’ll stop being an old goat and tell you what I really think. I believe the Social Security website (www.socialsecurity.gov) is a good site to use and navigate, especially when you consider the vast amount of information it has to contain. After all, little old ladies get on the site to replace a lost Medicare card. Attorneys use it to find references and precedents for various Social Security laws. A young bride might go to the website to get informa-tion about changing her name on her Social Security

card. A rapidly aging baby boomer will use the site to file for Social Security benefits. A guy from England who was sent to this country by his employer might need to find out about a Social Security treaty agree-ment between Britain and the U.S. The possible uses for Social Security’s website may not be endless, but they certainly are beyond most people’s comprehen-sion. Most of my readers are looking for answers to simple questions involving their Social Security ben-efits or future benefits: “Will I get widow’s benefits when my husband dies?” “I plan to retire this year. How much can I earn and still collect my Social Secu-rity?” “How do I apply for disability benefits?” “How does my teacher’s pension impact my Social Secu-rity?” And on and on the questions go. And here is a handy place to find the answers to those and many other questions. It’s the “Publica-tions” section of Social Security Administration web-site. SSA produces hundreds of publications cover-ing almost every major Social Security topic. Those pamphlets and fact sheets are lumped into a variety of categories, such as “Retirement Benefits” or “Sur-vivor Benefits” or “Medicare” or “Social Security Number.” I am very familiar with those publications because I used to be chief editor in the SSA office that pro-duced them. (Of course, they are not quite as clear and concise today as they were when I edited them, but they are still very good!) In fact, I will frequently turn to those publications, even today, to verify some little nugget of information that I had forgotten or wasn’t clear about. To find these fact sheets and pamphlets, click on “Get a publication” in the “Top Services” section of the homepage at www.socialsecurity.gov. That will lead you to hundreds of sources of information in about a dozen different categories. And they are gen-erally written in an easy-to-understand manner. * * *

Q: You provided me with some informa-tion about how my Social Security benefit will be computed. I appreciate your efforts, but I’d like to see this in more detail. I want to know precisely how my benefit will be figured, step-by-step, and right down to the penny. I want to know about “average indexed monthly earnings.” I want to know about “bend points” and “primary insurance amounts.” I tried to get help from my local Social Security office, but all they told me is: “The computers do all our calculations.” Great. Where can I go to get this information?

A: You’re an engineer, right? Or you’re just the kind of guy who has to take a watch apart to learn how it works. I’m sorry the folks at your local SSA office weren’t very helpful. In my day (we old guys say that a lot), we had to manually do the retirement calculations when a customer filed for Social Security benefits. But today, almost all those calculations are done by computer -- and frankly, probably done more accu-

rately! So, I understand a current SSA employee’s confusion when it comes to the complicated math involved in figuring a Social Security benefit. Still, he or she should have referred you to a source of information. You’ll find that information at SSA’s website: www.socialsecurity.gov. One of the fact sheets discussed in the prior answer is called “How your retirement benefit is figured.” But I’ve got a hunch that’s not going to be thorough enough for you, so I’ll steer you to the benefit computation “bible.” On the right side of the homepage, you’ll see a section labeled, “About Our Agency.” Pull down the little box that says “More” and then click on “Our Pro-gram Rules.” That takes you to a page where you will find all of Social Security’s laws and regulations. But you’ll also find that “bible” I mentioned, which contains every single rule and instruction for every kind of Social Security benefit. It’s called the “Pro-gram Operations Manual System” or “POMS.” Click on it. In the Table of Contents, click on “Retirement and Survivors Insurance.” Finally, click on “Deter-mination of PIAs and Benefit Amounts.” This section tells you exactly how every Social Security benefit is calculated. It’s a huge catalog of information. In the old days, before things were computer-ized and online, this benefit calculation section of “POMS” took up several 3-inch binders in a book-case in my office. Good luck! Are Getting Chilled, Catching Cold Linked? DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My friend and I have an ongoing discussion about how we catch colds. I believe the only way is by being exposed to a germ. My friend agrees, but also says you can become chilled, and that results in a cold. Please settle this once and for all. -- L.G.

ANSWER: The only way to catch a cold is to meet up with a cold virus. But let’s kick this around a little while it lies there quivering. Rhinoviruses are responsible for many colds. This virus is passed from one person to another most often via the hands and fingers. An infected person invariably will have virus on his or her hands and fin-gers. If that person touches another person’s hands or fingers, the virus is transferred. All the second person has to do is touch his or her nose or eyes and the virus has found a new home. (The drainage channel for tears siphons viruses into the nose.) It’s also possible to spread a cold through sneezing or coughing, but that’s a secondary route. Many colds are preceded by a body chill. That’s part of the infection symptoms, and that might be what your friend refers to. Once a virus lands in a person’s nose, the time till the development of cold symptoms is short -- eight to 12 hours. Runny nose, nasal stuffiness, scratchy throat, cough and sneezing are typical symptoms. They peak in 48 hours and are gone in about one week. A person is most contagious during the first three days of symptoms, when nasal discharge is at high volume and when it contains the most viruses.If by “chilling” your friend means being in a cold blast of air or getting your feet wet in frigid weather and shivering as a result, she has a slight point. That

kind of chilling constricts the nose’s blood vessels and decreases mucus production. It might, there-fore, permit cold viruses to mount a more effective attack and can contribute to the ease of catching a cold. All the same, without the virus there is no cold. ***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Can you give an ex-planation of and recommendation for cure of a health problem I have? Being over the age of 65 and in reasonably good health, I suffer every winter from painful cracks in my fingertips and the soles of my feet. -- R.V. ANSWER: The cracking indicates that your skin is drying out. You can restore moisture to your fingertips with a light coat -- just a dab will do you -- of petroleum jelly (Vaseline or another moistur-izer) before going to bed. Put Band-Aids over your fingertips, and leave them on all night. You can do the same during the day, but it’s a bit inconvenient. In about three days, the cracks should be filling in. Continue this treatment every third or fourth night. The same thing works for the feet. You don’t use Band-Aids, but you do cover your feet with socks before going to sleep. Don’t apply petroleum jelly during the daytime. It might make you somewhat unsteady. It takes longer for feet to heal. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Changes to Reverse Mortgages A reverse mortgage gives you money out of the equity in your home. You can get it in monthly sums, as a line of credit or all at once. The money doesn’t have to be paid back until you die or sell the house. Sounds good, right? But reverse mortgages have always been a tricky and complicated busi-ness, and now laws have recently changed con-cerning reverse mortgages. Appraisers are more protected now, and you have less recourse over a bad appraisal. You’ll be required to complete counseling to learn about reverse mortgages. The Federal Housing Administration has lowered upfront fees in its new Home Equity Con-version Mortgage Saver program as of October 2010. You’ll be charged 0.01 percent of the value of the home, instead of the mammoth thousands of dollars that often were charged with the Standard version before the change. The catch is that you can’t take out as much equity as before. Mortgage insurance is now 1.25 percent annually. The Saver program works best if you’re only going to stay in your home for a few years. However, the Standard reverse mortgages have some changes, too. You’ll still pay an upfront mortgage insurance premium of 2 percent of the value of the home. If paid monthly, that changes to a whopping 1.25 percent of the value of the home -- it had previously been 0.5 percent. Bottom line: Standard now costs more. No matter which version you choose, all liens must be paid off. The amount you get is deter-mined by the value of your home, your age (age 62 or above) and the going interest rates. Do I Really Know You? Q: My granddaughter and her fiance plan to wed in June. I am pleased about this, but my second husband, who is also close to her although he is not her real grandfather, has expressed concerns about the timing of their marriage. He thinks they are moving too fast. My son and daughter-in-law are caught up in the wedding excitement. We are hesitant about saying anything negative, but based on our own unhappy divorce experiences we wonder if we should at least say something that might give them pause to hold marriage off for awhile. Is this a good idea, or should we just keep quiet?

A: While your intentions are in their best inter-ests, it’s doubtful that expressing your concerns at this time is going to delay their marriage plans. However, you could do them both a great favor by sharing a few words of wisdom over coffee or dinner. Your knowledge and some details of what you both have experienced could benefit them greatly. For example, imagine what the result might be if either partner did not reveal a huge debt obligation, credit card delinquencies, a felony record or a previous marriage until after the wedding. Being blindsided with news like that would have a devastating impact on their relationship and immediately raise serious issues of trust. It’s far better to see these red flags early than to find out after the fact. I would strongly suggest that you encourage them to go through pre-marital counseling and, if there is expense involved with it, offer it as a gift. If done properly, this type of joint counseling works to bring a variety of potential issues to the surface and explores areas which they probably have never dis-cussed together. Let them know it would have likely made a big difference in your previous marriages. In-troduce the idea by sharing the challenges you faced during your first experiences. Give a few examples of why your marriages fal-tered. Was it due to diagreements about money, reli-gious faith and values, child rearing, attitudes, sex? Did you have an unwillingness to compromise? Ask if they have discussed their needs, values and -- espe-cially -- expectations. Do they understand the differ-ence between wants and needs? Do they know how to react to successes and setbacks? Love, patience, humor and the ability to listen are all key elements. Such counseling might well become the most valu-able gift they receive! * * *

Q: We’ve made the decision to take early reitrement, sell our home and move out of state to a retirement community in Southern Cali-fornia. We understand choosing to take early retirement in today’s chaotic financial market-place is a gamble. Are we fooling ourselves and making a mistake?

A: Our futures are always unpredictable -- some-times lucky and other times just wishful thinking. Af-ter retiring, occasionally what we thought would be nirvana does not work. Sometimes couples face ma-jor changes in unexpected major health issues, loss of retirement income, and regret leaving old friends and giving up their jobs and homes. These factors surface because couples choose to retire too soon or too late. Men more than women tend to feel more loss of personal identity and sometimes self-esteem. Giving up long-term friends, longtime doctors and religious affiliations as well as having to find new markets and friends can be stressful. You might have to deal with difficulties such as health issues or your children moving away. How familiar are you with the retirement com-munity you have chosen? Have you stayed there pre-

viously as vacation renters and become acquainted with the lifestyle and social culture? Be sure you know just what you’re getting into before making a commitment to buy and move in. Keeping your op-tions open is the best way to approach this big step.

● On March 8, 1951, the Lonely Hearts Killers -- Martha Beck and Raymond Marti-nez Fernandez -- are executed in the elec-tric chair at Sing Sing Prison in New York. The odd couple had schemed to seduce, rob and murder women who placed per-sonal ads in newspapers. Their story has been the subject of several movies, most recently “Lonely Hearts” (2006).

● On March 9, 1985, the first-ever Adopt-a-Highway sign is erected on Highway 69 in Texas. The highway was adopted by the Tyler Civitan Club, which committed to picking up trash along a designated 2-mile stretch of the road.

Copper Luster Shines with Collectors Q: The pictured small pitcher belonged to my great-grandfather. We think it must be over 150 years old. Standing approximately 5 inches tall, it is in mint condition and decorated with a metallic finish and a wide blue band. There is no manufacturer’s mark. I would appreciate any information you can provide.

A: You have a copper luster cream pitcher that was probably made in Staffordshire, England, around 1850. A plethora of copper luster pieces were made in the early to late 1800s, and they were usually not marked with the name of the manufacturer. Your pitcher is collectible and would probably be worth $75 to $125.

Q: The enclosed mark is on the bottom of a china tea set that my parents received as a wedding gift in 1928. The set consists of a tea-

pot, a sugar bowl, a creamer, and four each of cups, saucers and dessert plates. Each piece is decorated with hand-painted branches of white flowers and buds against a blue and tan irides-cent background. I wonder if you could tell the value of this tea set.

A: From 1880 to 1948, Takito China Co. was lo-cated in Japan. The value of your set would probably be $125 to $150.

Q: Will you help me, please? I have a pair of metal bookends, which have a 1925 copy-right and are marked: “Pompeian Bronze -- The Shepherdess.” The front of each bookend is inlaid with mother of pearl and decorated with a scene of a shepherdess, trees, sheep and mountains. The sky is painted blue and the grass is green. Each stands approximately 5 inches tall and 3 inches wide. They are in very good condition. Are my bookends collectible? And what are they worth?

Square Up Your Finish with Better Balance

Many golfers out there have a difficult time finishing theirswings in balance. It is tough for them to “strike a pose” andhold their finish. This is often a result a poor balance.As discussed in previous articles, the key to making better swings is understanding how the body is designed on a gridand in eight sockets; two shoulder, hips, knees and ankles.Keeping these sockets stacked in relation to each other is what keeps the body in balance and when the body is inbalance it makes it easier to keep the rotation of the swingmoving through to a balanced finish. Notice in the photo how I am in perfect balance as I am holding my finish; my shoulders are balanced on top of myhips, which are balanced on top of my knees and on top of my feet. I also have both shoulders level to each other as well as the hips and knees. As you can see on the screen inthe distance, my body is basically on a grid that shows me what perfect balance feels like.Many times higher handicappers struggle into a balancedfinish because their shoulders have rotated off their hips in the forward swing or they have swiveled their knees out fromunder their hips. As soon as the body feels this loss of balance it will stop the rotation and the arms and hands willneed to flip the club through impact resulting in a mishit. Teaching with Motion Analysis Technology, as seen in the photo with the sensors on my body and image on the screenin the background, gives me the exact data to measure myangles in my swing. I can see on the monitor where perfectbalance is as I hold my finish, therefore train my body to repeat perfect balance on a more consistent basis. Thisexact data gives me and the student greater clarity andprecision in making the necessary adjustments to create a faster more effective result. Square up your finish withbetter balance Many golfers have a difficult time finishing their swings in balance. It’s hard for them to “strike a pose” and hold their finish. This is often a result of poor body balance throughout their swing. The key to finding the problems causing im-balance is to study the four pairs of sockets that function in the process of the swing: the shoulders, hips, knees and ankles. Keeping these sockets in the properly “stacked” relationship to each other results in a naturally smooth swing and a balanced finish. Notice in the photo how I am in perfect balance as I hold my finish: Shoulders are aligned above the hips, the hips above the knees, and the knees above the feet. Notice, too, that all of these socket points are level. The projected image on the screen grid enables me to as-sociate the sensations I feel in a balanced swing with what I can see my body doing. When many high handicap-pers swing, they allow their shoulders to rotate off their hips, or the knees to move away from under the hips. When the body senses this loss of balance in the natural rotation of the swing it often results in a mishit ball. The use of Motion Analysis Technology (MAT), as shown in the photo, uses sensors to show the exact angles of these key body points in the swing motion. This visual method is highly useful in allow-ing both student and instructor to quickly see where adjustments need to be made. I have found MAT to be one of my most effective teaching methods.
