We are excited to announce the arrival of a new ambulance! And with it, the CVFD has made a much-needed leap forward in their abilities to serve our community. Craig Peterson, Deputy Chief of EMS for the Crescent Fire & Rescue says, “The new squad was built by Life Line Emergency Vehicles in Sumner, Iowa and is mounted on a 2012 Ford F450 4x4. We decided a few years ago when we had the big blizzard that our next ambulance was going to be 4-wheel drive so we can make sure we are able to respond safely in any weather condition and being that most of our responce district consists of Loess Hills terrain and gravel roads this will benifit the community greatly. Our old primary response ambulance was bought new in 1998 and served the area for almost 15 years. The new truck is equipt with high intensity LED warning lights that will give us greater visibility on accident scenes so traffic will recognize that emergency vehicles are on the side of the road and that emergency responders are present which will help keep our people safe. The patient care area has a little more elbow room for patient comforts, also has an integrated child saftey seat built into one of the seats which the old one didn’t have. We were all very excited to have this truck built and delivered. This truck will benefit the community for many years to come.” The new ambulance will be on display at the Fire Hall while Santa’s in town next Saturday. Lastly, we are proud to report that the $164,500 purchase was paid for in full with money they’ve earned through the last 15 years of medical transports as well as some donations.

Staff and students of Crescent Elementary proudly raised their National Blue Ribbon Flag this week. And as you can see by their faces, it was well-received. Rather than braving the elements, they’ve decided to permanently display it behind glass on a wall inside the main entrance so it can be enjoyed for years to come.

MINUTES OF THE REGULAR CITY OF CRESCENT COUNCIL MEETING: November 5, 2012 THE CRESCENT CITY COUNCIL met in regular session in the Crescent Community Hall at 7:00pm pursuant to the law. Mayor Brian Shea called the meeting to order. The following Council members were present: Anderson, Clark, Stokes, Morgan, and Jacobsen. ANDERSON would like to add lagoon updates as Item 14A. MOTION BY Clark, seconded by Stokes to accept consent agenda. Clark, Stokes, Morgan, Jacobsen, Anderson, all ayes. Motion carried. ANNUAL REPORT YEAR END 6-30-12 submitted for approval. West Foundation for repairs to the tennis court. FIRE DEPARTMENT/GALEN BARRETT reported that they are at 250 calls for the year. FIRE PREVENTION OPEN HOUSE was a huge success. Thank you to all who attended. BURN BAN has been lifted. Dept. has received an electric power cot, weight capacity of 700 lbs. New ambulance should be arriving sometime this month. PLANNING COMMISSION/RON OLSON reported that they studied the rumble strips on Hwy 988. They see no problem with removing the strips in front of the Golden Hills addition. They recommend that the homeowners in that addition cover this cost as they are the requesting party. They also make a recommendation of making a NO PASSING ZONE from OLH to 200’ west of Pokamoke Rd. Council would like an ordinance for this at the December mtg. ANDERSON reported that the engineering report for the lagoons should be going to FEMA by Nov. 9th. We have been reassured that the 2 yr time limit will be extended by FEMA as they are the ones that kept asking for more information. The City is still eligible for FEMA money for this repair. MOTION BY ANDERSON, seconded by Stokes to adjourn the meeting. Anderson, Clark, Stokes, Morgan, Jacobsen, all ayes. Motion carried. MEETING adjourned at 8:10pm.

MINUTES OF THE SPEICAL CITY OF CRESCENT COUNCIL MEETING...October 22, 2012 THE CRESCENT CITY COUNCIL met in special closed session in the Crescent Community Hall at 6:11PM pursuant to the law. Mayor Shea called the meeting to order. The following Council members were present: Anderson, Jacobsen, Morgan, Clark. Stokes, absent. Also in attendance: Denny Graham, Ollson & Assoc. MOTION BY ANDERSON, seconded by Morgan to award water main extension (Hwy 988) project to Thompson Construction, Inc. in the amount of $68,410.00. It was discussed that seeding/mulching and aggregate work possibly may be done by the City themselves. Anderson, Jacobsen, Morgan, Clark, all ayes. Motion carried. Supplemental Services Contract submitted for approval. This is for an inspector to oversee work done on above water main project. MOTION BY ANDERSON, seconded by Jacobsen to approve contract. Anderson, Jacobsen, Morgan, Clark, all ayes. Motion carried. Amended Flood Damage Assessment contract submitted for approval. This is allowing Geotech to get further information for a FEMA report. Mayor’s Corner Well, the holidays are here and it seems everyone is busy. The city has accepted the donated 4 acres of land on the northwest corner of Mormon Bridge Rd. and Pokemoke Rd., from Romeo Ent., for a future City/Community/Fire Station building. The city is installing a water line to the property. In the future we will start a fundraising campaign for this building. The speed limit through parts of town is being lowered. Coming into town on Mormon Bridge Rd. the speed limit is being set at 35mph, and the north side of town is set to be 45mph. People walking along the road is a safety concern. The need for sidewalks/biketrail through town has become greater as our town grows. As you may know, we have seen more patrols for speeding and the 3 way stop sign. So be aware of the new speed limits. I hope everyone has a good holiday season. Let’s hope 2013 is a great year for our community. —Brian Shea

The following excerpt was taken from the journals of Amos R. Cherry, a member of the14th Iowa Infantry Regiment. Cherry kept detailed notes of the trek across Iowa and into Indian country during the Sully Campaigns. Their assignment was to protect settlements against “depreda-tions and outrages by the Indians”. There are over 300 pages describing the day to day experiences of the troops during the time of the Civil War.

“Thursday, November 21st, 1861... Resumed the march today at twelve o’clock and marched ten miles and encamped on Pigeon Creek ten miles north of Council Bluffs and two miles north of Crescent City, a small Mormon Settlement of about three hundred inhabitants. When we received the Order to march Co A and C struck their tents and made preparations to start but Co B was not to be deceived any farther. We was told that Pattee had hired six more teams and had loaded them with provisions, but we told them if we saw the waggons with the provisions in them we would beleive it and go on and not untill then so we did not toutch a tent or one thing of our baggage. Every thing in our part of the camp looked as if we was going to remain there all winter, while Co A & C tents was all loaded their baggage all in the waggons their knapsacks on their guns in their hands all ready for a start. We laughed at them and asked them if they was traveling or going some place. They replyed that they intended to obey orders we might call it what we pleased. We replyed that we intended to obey all reasonable commands but we would not go any further without any thing to eat that we would fight there first. This silenced them and we sat arround taking our ease not a tent moved not an article of baggage touched or a team hitched up and we was waiting to see how it would terminate. While we was thus waiting Capt Pattee came down with the extra teams loaded as had been said with eatables and Co. B. went to work with a right good will to striking their tents and loading their baggage and took their arms from the stacks fell into line and reported themselves ready for duity and we went on in the faithfull and cheerefull discharge of our duity but if those provisions had not came at that time we would not have started an inch until they did come we had made up our mind on that and was determined on that point. We fared very well from there to this place. We got all we could eat and that which was good to. The day we left the Bluffs we passed through the Out Skirts of the town. As we was passing allong I and the Orderly Seargant was walking along togather we had our overcoats on and [they] was rather [heavy]. Says he let us fall back and put our coats on the waggons. Well says I I dont care if we do. I am rather [tired]. So we halted and put our overcoats on the waggon. Then says the Orderly let us go allong slow here and call at some house and get our dinner. Well says I I am in for that evry time. So we come along to a neat little white cottage and called in and asked for our dinner. The Lady of the house said we could have the best she had cooked in the house which was not very good. We sat up and eat our dinner which was very good (but I have got just as good at home before now) and while we was eating the rear Guard went past and we sit still and slipped them very neatly and had things our own way the rest of the day and took it slow and easy and kept about five miles behind the command. We did not get into camp until after dark and got a ride with a kind old farmer for two or three miles at that. When I got in cmap the boys was cooking their supper at the camp fires but I was not very hungry and did not pay much attention to them. I went up to the tent and got out my note book and took down the incidents of the day.

Iowa Barn Foundation Founded in 1997, the Iowa Barn Foundation is dedicated to preserving Iowa's rural buildings, symbols of Iowa's early agricultural heritage. They provide matching grants to property owners to help restore qualified barns. They also give Awards of Distinction to those property owners who restore or rehabilitate their barns at their own expense. In addition, the Iowa Barn Foundation is committed to farm conservancy and now accepts economically and financially self-sustaining farms and farmland. These farms and farmland are saved in perpetuity for agricultural purposes according to the owner's wishes. Is it large (over 40’ wide and 60’ long)? Is it architecturally unique (e.g., square, round, U-shaped, made of stone, etc.)? Was it built before 1870? Was it built or owned by someone important in Iowa’s agricultural history? Was a new breed of livestock introduced there? The siding must be wooden. Metal siding is acceptable if it is at least 50 years old. Was the barn built using blueprints (e.g., Louden Machinery Co., Gordon-Van Tine, etc.) that you still have?

Lansky’s Night to Support Crescent Elementary - Upcoming Date: DECEMBER 22. Lansky’s Restaurant on North Broadway will generously donate 15% of total receipts on our designated day back to our school. Our date is the 4th Saturday of every month from 11 am - 9 pm. Just eat at Lansky’s and drop your receipt in the box on the counter. We appreciate the support from our community with this fundraising effort, as anyone eating at the restaurant that day can drop a receipt in the box.

All About Science! We continue to hold hands-on science labs once a month. These are put on by parent volunteers. Students will be learning about Force and Motion in November and States of Matter in December. Volunteers are welcome to help with this program on the 4th Tuesday afternoons of each month. What’s Up at CECC?Submitted by Linda & Mindy Brewer

In November, we always ask our kids what they are thankful for. This year, without prompting, many said their families. Those who said that were Faith, Jay, Jack, Josie, Claire, Dylan and Alyssa. A few said something else: Misia said food, American Girl dolls and cookies; Kaybree said dogs and cats and Grampa Rex, and Nicholas said school. And we missed a few who weren’t there the day we took our poll. In our preschool class, we read a book called “A Cranberry Thanksgiving” and made cranberry bread. In order to bring numbers into the lesson, we always ask the kids to come up with their own recipe. This year’s recipe was... 2 strawberries 2 oranges 1/2 cup milk 2 cups pea soup 1 cup orange juice 3 cups flour 4 cups sugar 2 eggs Bake at 238 degrees for 2 minutes You can understand how we are hesitant to actually try the recipe. Because Thanksgiving is usually the holiday the kids are the least familiar with (It doesn’t involve gifts or candy), we will do some reading about the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians and how the first Thanksgiving came to be. We also plan to have a real turkey dinner and make some centerpieces. In between Halloween and Thanksgiving, we worked in the presidential election. We took the kids up to the Fire Barn to watch people actually vote and then had our own election. It was Obama - 6; Romney - 4, a reflection of the actual national vote. We also had the kids run for president of our class. Dylan’s campaign promises were to clean up after everyone for a day and to bring cookies. They were appealing promises, and he was elected. He chose Josie for his vice president, and they “ruled” for a day. Dylan actually kept his camapign promises! We have several businesses and people to thank for allowing us to trick or treat. Not only did they welcome us, the kids went home with huge buckets of treats. We thank Shirley Collins, Henry’s Diner, Crescent Feed, Mark at the post office, American National Bank and Sharon Morris at American Back Hoe, who chased us down to give us bags of candy. The kids and teachers are most appreciative of that small town spirit. Life-long Crescent resident, Corky Oamek, passed away October 30th at age 84. He was born in Crescent on March 31, 1928, to the late Wallace and Alice (Johnson) Oamek. With respect to Cork’s place in Crescent history, he was the great grandson of Chris

Omeg (later spelled Oamek) who emigrated from Germany to Minnesota and later moved to the Crescent-Honey Creek area around 1870, finally settling on a

farm at the top of Leisure Avenue where Todd Meyer now lives. Prior to moving to Crescent, Chris had a freight business using oxen teams to ship goods from Council Bluffs to Denver, prior to the railroad. He gambled frequently and also apparently had multiple wives, but only one at a time when he was in this area. He had 3 sons and a daughter here. The two oldest two sons, Joe and George, farmed in the area from about 1890 to the mid 1950’s. In turn, they had children who farmed east of Crescent, along Old Lincoln Highway, the Pigeon Creek bottoms, and near the original place at the top of what is now Leisure Avenue. Cork was the son of Wallace (Shorty) Oamek, George Oamek’s second son, and grew up east of Crescent. Cork was also the grandson of John and Laura Johnson, early Crescent residents. John immigrated to the area from Sweden in the late 1800’s. Johnson Street in Crescent was named after Grandma Laura. Cork went to the old Crescent School on Johnson Street through the 10th grade. He tried to enlist in the Navy in 1944 after one of his best friend’s brothers, Howard Pratt, a Crescent boy, was killed at Omaha Beach. He was turned down because he was not yet 18 and his parents refused to grant the needed permission for him to enlist (and also because he looked really young, according to his mother), later graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School with the class of 1945. He worked as a laborer on a bridge building crew during 1946-1950 and helped build some of the

bridges around Crescent. He was drafted into the Army in 1950 during the Korean conflict, right after meeting his future wife Barbara. They had a long distance relationship while he was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, serving as a Drill Instructor (no kidding) before being honorably discharged in 1952. Cork was a 60-year member of American Legion Rainbow Post #2. Cork trained as a pipefitter on steam locomotives after returning from the Army, working for various railroads early in his career. He was with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad during the last 25 years before retiring as a shop foreman in 1990. He liked the

work more than the irregular hours that kept him away from family on many major holidays. After retiring, his main sources of entertainment were mostly Crescent-based: morning coffee at Henry’s and an afternoon beer with his many friends at Denny’s. He enjoyed a life well-lived with his wife, Barbara, to whom he married January 31, 1953. He is survived by Barbara and their daughters and sons-in-law, Christie and James Johnsen, Kathie and Raymond Davis; son and daughter-in-law, George and Sharon Oamek; 5 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and a host of other family and friends. I believe that Cork considered the entire town of Crescent his family.
