Res Publicaby David Trumbull

Most readers recall thatmythology identifies thenether worlds, or land of thedead, in three distinct cat-egories. “Elysium” or the“Elysian Fields” (our heaven)was the place where chaste, moral, righteous, and virtu-ous people went after death, and where there was com-plete happiness, paradise, and ideal bliss. Vergil repre-sented it as a region blessedwith perpetual spring, beau-tiful flowers, pleasantlyshaded groves and never-failing fountains.

Tartarus (our Hell) was aplace beneath the earth, asfar below as Elysium wasabove. It was closed by irongates, and occupancy wasreserved for the dammed. These were the people whohad incurred the wrath ofthe gods and, in so doing, became subject to divinevengeance.

Lastly, of course, there was“Hades” (our Purgatory), inthe depths of the earth, withits wide open doors. This wasthe place where all deadsouls went while awaitingjudgment and commitmentto the upper or lower world.Hades was usually repre-sented as a place and also aperson. As a place, it was agrove of barren willows, veiled in darkness or cloudswhere the sun never shone. The ground was coveredwith asphodel, a dreary plantof the lily family that was of-ten planted on graves. Theentrance to this place called

HERCULES AND THE HELLHOUND

Hades was guarded by dognamed “Cerberus”, a terriblemonster with three heads, atail of three serpents, and abody bristling with vipers. He was friendly to all whoentered, but if anyone triedto escape, he would seizethat person and hold himfast.

As a person, Hades, god ofthis underworld, ruled a ser-vant named Charon. He wasthe mythological ferrymanfrom antiquity who con-ducted the souls of the deadin a boat across the riverAcheron. Ancient poets haverepresented Charon as astern and robust old man, with eyes glowing likeflame, white bushy hair, dingy clothes that werestained with the muck ofthe river, and holding a longpole which he used to propelthe boat.

Probably the most interest-ing portrayal of this subjectis in the lower right-handcorner of Michelangelo’s“Last Judgment” on the wallof the Sistine Chapel,Vatican City. This painting(fresco) is considered to bethe largest and most com-prehensive fresco in theworld. It shows that terrify-ing moment at the end of the

world when the remorsefulcondemned are being drawndown to the depths of thelower world by taloned de-mons. Then there is Charonthe boatman, forcing the re-luctant souls to disembark, while other demons are pull-ing them off the boat withgrappling irons. Finally,Hades, the ruler of this in-fernal region, is standing inthe extreme lower right-hand corner with a serpentcoiled around his waist.

The last task demanded ofHercules was to bring upCerberus from Hades, prob-ably the most difficult of allhis labors. Guided by Mer-cury and possibly Minerva,Hercules descended into theunderworld. After some mi-nor incidents involving theoccupants, Hercules con-fronted Hades and demandedthat he be permitted to carryoff Cerberus. One accountsays that Hades agreed, ifHercules could do so withoutharming the dog. Anotherreport tells how Herculeswounded Hades, forcing himto retreat to Mt. Olympusfor treatment. Nevertheless,Hercules dragged the hell-hound to daylight and pre-sented him to the king whowas the author of all theselabors. Hercules was told, from a safe distance, to takethe dog back to Hades, thuscompleting all of the laborsthat were imposed uponhim.

NEXT WEEK:The end of a legend

The vote — 300 to 131 —in the U.S. House of Repre-sentatives back in June, torepeal a mandatory Countryof Origin Label (“COOL”) lawas it relates to certain meat, has generated much con-sternation and condemna-tion of Congress. The actionof the House may or may not, depending on your thinking, have been wrong-headed;but having some backgroundinformation on why our gov-ernment may be proceedingin this manner may impactyour opinion.

I support country of originlabeling (“COOL”) laws and Isupported this one in par-ticular. But I believe thatCongress was in a bind hereand repeal, unfortunately, may be the only way out.Canada filed a dispute withthe World Trade Organiza-tion (“WTO”) claiming thatthis COOL law unfairly dis-advantages Canadian beefand pork and is in violationof the U.S. commitments tothe WTO. Mexico joined inthe complaint (as did a fewother countries, but Canadaand Mexico are the ones thatmatter in this case).

The U.S. lost the dispute. We appealed. We eventweaked the U.S. regula-tions to try to get this COOLlaw into compliance with ourWTO commitments. But ear-lier this year we lost thefourth, and final, appeal tothe WTO. Now Canada andMexico are now allowed toimpose billions of dollars inadditional tariffs on U.S.products unless we repealthis COOL law. If the U.S.does not repeal this COOLlaw, the U.S. faces (1) theprospect of harming U.S. eco-nomic interests (both busi-ness and workers), (2) being

an “outlaw” nation asregards our commitments tothe WTO (we file complaintsall the time at the WTOagainst other countries be-cause of their practices and, when they lose, we expectthem to comply; so whenwe lose, we need to comply),and (3) a domestic meatindustry that not only didn’tsupport the law in its cur-rent form, but in some casesactively opposed it. Theredoesn’t seem to be anythingto be done but repeal it.

The good news is thatCOOL is not necessarily inconflict with our WTO com-mitments (the U.S. has manyCOOL laws that are not chal-lenged at the WTO), justthis particular COOL law.So rather than criticizeCongress for an unfortu-nate, but necessary repeal,we should lobby Congress fora new COOL for meat thatwill not run us afoul ofWTO regulations. The ques-tion here is not consumerprotection, but the U.S.making our laws subjectto scrutiny by an interna-tional tribunal. Whether theU.S. should enter into bind-ing international agreementssuch as the WTO is a ques-tion worthy of debate. But weare obligated to honor thecommitments we have.

[By way of full disclosure, one of my clients is theAmerican Sheep IndustryAssociation, a strong advo-cate for COOL laws for meat.Lamb meat is covered by theCOOL law, but for lamb itoperates somewhat differ-ently from the way COOLoperates for beef and pork. The COOL law for lamb wasnot contested at the WTO andthere is no talk of repealingit.]

OUR POLICY: To help preserve the ideals and sacred traditionsof this our adopted country the United States of America:To revere its laws and inspire others to respect and obey them:To strive unceasingly to quicken the public’s sense of civic duty:In all ways to aid in making this country greater and betterthan we found it.

As I read the Boston Herald news story (Councilorswant first-responders on needle disposal, August 11),I wondered why the need for a City Council-passedordinance requiring first-responders to dispose ofdiscarded needles found by city work crews. Aren’tfirst-responders already doing this?

As a private citizen and also while on the job as apolice officer, I have found discarded needles, onceon the grounds of an elementary school. I called 911because that is a common sense response to such afinding.

Where is the need for such an ordinance? To me itall sounds like another piece of pretend feel good stuff, making folks think the Boston City Council is look-ing out for their public safety. It also would appearthat the ordinance seems to be narrowly based andeffecting only the actions of city workers. What aboutmembers of the public who come upon discardedneedles? What are they to do, call a city work crew toimplement the ordinance?

As far as the need for emergency personnel to es-tablish rules and regulations for the safe disposal ofneedles, surely those are already in place at EMS,police and fire departments, right?

As for my 27 years as a police officer, I had to safelydispose of dirty needles found by the public.

Is there a good reason for the City Council to passan ordinance to do what is already in place? If aprivate citizen comes upon discarded needles, callthe police. If a city work crew finds these needles, dolikewise?

The Boston City Council Public Safety Committeemust have more important work to do than proposean ordinance that is not really needed.

Sincerely,Sal Giarratani

The Republican establishment is going crazy over thesuccess so far of Donald Trump in the upcoming presiden-tial election. Every time they think he hit the third rail ofpolitics, he gets up to battle again. His flub losing his coolon Megyn Kelly’s gotcha question should have messed uphis entire campaign, but that didn’t happen or come closeto happening.

This past week when Donald Trump showed up for juryduty in NYC, I watched CNN’s coverage of that story. At onepoint, a young potential juror who sat along with Trumpwas interviewed. The questions thrown at him were sobiased. They so wanted the young man to say how arrogantTrump was inside the jury pool area, but the kid didn’t takethe bait and just said Trump acted no different than any ofthe other jurors. He said he and they just chatted like any-one in a jury pool. You could see the disappointment on theanchor’s face. He seemed to so want to make Trump lookbad.

Also, you can tell that Fox News Chairman Roger Ailesseems to be going out of his way to demonize Trump. MegynKelly was just the tip of the iceberg. I used to like CharlesKrauthammer but lately, when it comes to Trump cover-age, he is sounding more like Juan Williams. Then there’sKarl Rove. Everyone on Fox seems to be bashing Trumpas hurting Republicans, but few seem to realize Trump’ssuccess.

Trump keeps pushing forward because most of Americais angry and frustrated with politics as usual. Trumpis not politics as usual. Most people seem to like that.He is neither liberal nor conservative. He is plainpopulism.

Look at Washington. They’re all useless down there. They are all insiders or, as Ted Cruz calls them, the“Washington Cartel.” Republican Rhinos run the GOP.Their ideology is simply power. Don’t upset the way thingsare. Go along. Period. The Democrats do the samething.

Many in the media miss something important. They say Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump areat the edges of the political spectrum. Not the case. The spectrum I learned back in my college days isn’t astraight line, it is a circle. Sanders and Trump are meet-ing up at the same place, a place that is good for a demo-cratic republic. The place gathers up those who no longerbelieve their government is working for them. We have agovernment that has grown too big and too distant from thepeople. This was a charge our founders made against GreatBritain in 1775.

There is a growing disenchantment with Washington thatcan be viewed as a far greater threat to self-governmentthan anything we have ever seen before.

The people are restless and are looking for real leaders, not politicians who live inside little boxes and say preciouslittle.

George Wallace said something great back in 1968,“There’s not a dime’s worth of difference between theDemocrats and Republicans.” That statement thenis what drives Trump, and Bernie Sanders today.

Why is Trumping Going So Strong?

This morning, as I satdown to watch the newsto start my day, a light-hearted story appeareddeclaring that Star-bucks will, in fact, startputting pumpkin intotheir pumpkin spicelattes. Pumpkin seasonis still fairly far-off, butthis served yet asanother reminder forme that autumn, myfavorite season, quicklyapproaches. Indeed, Ihave lately been payingattention to the signs ofthe changing season allaround me, from theprevalence of apples inthe supermarket to theever-so-slight hues ofred and orange appearing onsome leaves. When the daysget too humid and sticky —which I am fine with at thebeginning of summer, butfind unbearable when craft-ing lesson plans or settingup my classroom for the nextschool year — I think of theharvest decorations I con-tinually see in store, andshiver with excitement overthe crisp days of fall. Observ-ing the signs of the chang-ing seasons not only helpsme live in the moment byconcentrating on the natu-ral phenomena currently un-folding around me, but itlinks me in a powerful wayto the actions and lives of myancestors.

Tracking the seasons hasbeen a passion of mine longbefore I started this column. While clearing out a drawerin my old room, my motherfound an old notebook ofmine in which I had beencharting the natural signsof the changing seasons. For the shift from summerto autumn, I wrote aboutwitnessing my uncle andgrandmother planting thebulbs of a daisy, called amargherita in Italian, whichwould bloom in late Septem-ber. I mentioned a gnarled

tree whose leaves alwaysturned a kaleidoscope ofyellow and red a monthearly, and floated to theground well before the calen-dar turned to autumn. Bak-ing an apple desert, coolmornings, the color of theearly twilight — all of theseobservations made it intothat little notebook. Doing sohelped me become a betterobserver of nature and of theexcitement of life aroundme, and I hope to resumethis sort of project againsoon. Noticing and recordingthe shifting tide of the sea-sons actually has a scien-tific name. It is known asphenology, and naturalistsoften encourage people tosketch or write down theirobservations and then sub-mit them in order to helpscientists track climate data.So this hobby is both roman-tic and functional!

This pastime is apparentlyquite timeless as well. Our ancestors have beendiscerning the seasonalchanges since time imme-morial — not because theywere eager for pumpkinspice lattes or photographingfalling leaves, but ratherbecause they operated in aprimarily agricultural soci-

ety where determiningthe right time to plantor harvest crops wasinvaluable to the sur-vival of the community. In Italy, August func-tions as the month ofthe grain and hay har-vest, and tightly rolledbundles of hay bakingunder the sun serve asone of the surest signsthat autumn will soondescend upon the lovelyItalian countryside. Ital-ian farmers also exam-ine their grapes duringthis month, ensuringthey are getting theright amount of sun-shine, water and shadeto make them perfect

for the vendemmia, or har-vest, in September. After all, grapes stand as an impor-tant cultural symbol in Italy, for the grapes gathered inSeptember will be processedinto wine in November, ready to serve as the stead-fast staple of Italian hospi-tality during the holidaysand beyond. Finally, Italianfarmers of yore frequentlyused saints’ days as mile-stones for seasonal changes,a trait which is reflected inthe proverbs still ubiquitousin Italian society to this day.August 24th is St. Bartholo-mew’s Day, and the Italiansrepeat a proverb whichdeclares: “A San Bartolomeomontagna mia bella tiabbandono.” Translated, this dictum says that oneshould abandon the beauti-ful mountains after the Feastof St. Bartholomew, perhapsa reference to the coolerweather and the end of thevacation period. When wenotice even the simplesttransitions from one seasonto another, therefore, we areactually repeating the ac-tions our forebears per-formed in order to carve outa living from the Earth.

As the bright days of sum-mer give way to the coolnights of fall, I encourageeveryone to keep track ofthe unfolding seasonalchanges. These transitionsdo not have to be major,as even the tiniest

White days. Of late, Tavaresseems to be the biggest Bos-ton summer act at the Dor-othy Curran Concert Series. They never disappoint.

On Wednesday night,August 12th, I boogied myway over to City Hall Plazawhere I joined severalother Tavares fans for agreat “Boogie Night” ofmusic with those guys fromNew Bedford. The showopener was Steven (Virgil)Virgilio and his Vinyl Grooveshow-stoppers. They werefantastic playing all thosegreat tunes from the ’60sand ’70s.

I’ve heard Virgil’s bandmany times before. Thistime on stage I heard hisnewest addition, singerSimone Alyse, who carries apowerful voice in such aslender frame. She defi-nitely brought the housedown and will be a valuablepart of Vinyl Groove into thefuture.

Virgil is a presence onstage and is the energy thatruns this music machine.

Bye-Bye Quinzani’s Bakeryby Sal Giarratani

The Boston Globe recentlydid a pretty good story onthe closing of a South Endinstitution by the nameof Quinzani’s Bakery onHarrison Avenue, in whatonce was a gritty part of theSouth End. The reporterstated that the bakery wassold to an unnamed buyer.

As someone from theSouth End back in its grittydays, I remember the firstredevelopment of the areathat now is anchored byInk Block. The old New YorkStreet Neighborhood oncehoused a large Lebanese andSyrian community withmany small bakeries alongHarrison Avenue. The yearwas in 1958, and over thenext few years that neigh-borhood was razed andreplaced by new industriessuch as the then new BostonHerald Traveler building,Massachusetts Envelope andGraybar. The width of Har-rison Avenue doubled.

Quinzani Bakery had beenaround since 1918, over inwhat was called the CombatZone, in cramped quartersnot far from Chinatown.Later Quinzani’s moved into

a new site down from theBoston Herald Traveler close toDover Street. Over the pastcouple of years, I have pur-chased breads from themand got to know many of thelongtime workers who madeQuinzani’s such a greatbakery.

I was shocked to hear of itsrecent closing. Another partof South End history nowfades to black like so manyother places in the South Endof the ’50s and ’60s.

Hopefully, the displacedworkers ended up with newemployment quickly. I wastold that many made thetransition easily to newbakery jobs with the help ofQuinzani owners.

Quinzani’s will be missedand surely the area is nowprimed for residential use,as the new South End/SouthBoston area connected byJimmy Kelly’s bridge contin-ues to grow and prosper.

However, it is still a sadtime when a piece of localhistory dies.

Thank you to everyone!

Fresh-baked quality since1918.

Thirty-one year employeeRafael Melendez loved hisjob and keeps his smile on.

Calendar marks ending.

Your dog is a social animal. That’s what makes himsuch a fabulous, one-of-a-kind companion. He willinglyincorporates you and yourfamily into his social circle.Being a leader in your dog’ssocial circle is a great wayto build your relationshipand to live a happy, healthylife together. Your dog willlook to you to provide himwith effective leadership.Being a good leader meansproviding your dog withstructure and guidance. Youmay think that routine isboring, but it helps your dogunderstand his world, becalm and stay out of trouble! Here are some simple waysto help put you and your fam-ily in “leader” position:

When interacting withyour dog, be kind and con-sistent. Have him “sit” or “laydown” before you give himanything he wants, from pet-ting to tossing a toy. Whenhe responds to you beforeyou respond to him, he willstart to look to you to set therules, while at the sametime getting in a daily train-ing practice. Gently handleyour dog’s ears, mouth andpaws, so he learns to acceptthis. Start when he is veryyoung and for brief periods of

time. Remain playful duringthese exercises, making agame out of them. Praisehim and reward him withtreats. These exercises areeasy with most puppies, butif your puppy really strugglesor gets upset, consult yourveterinarian or seek assis-tance from a qualified dogtrainer as soon as possible.

Use different tones of voiceto communicate differentmessages. A higher thannormal pitch is exciting, playful and perfect for praise.A normal tone, direct andconfident, is your commandtone. A lowered voice, yourdog hears as a warning likea growl. With practice, yourpuppy can learn to under-stand your mood throughyour tone of voice.

Exercise him daily. Re-member that dogs learnthrough practice and repeti-tion. Be patient! If you dothese things consistently, your dog will become afriendly, well-balanced andwell-mannered canine. Re-member, never hit or yell atyour dog. Focus on prevent-ing or distracting your dogfrom problem behaviors, noton correcting them. Replaceunwanted behaviors withsomething appropriate. If

your dog chews, give him afood dispensing toy to workon or a good chew toy. Thatway you both win: he gets tochew and you get peace inyour house.

Dogs willingly and lovinglylet us into their social circle. With a little practice and lotsof love, you and your dog canbe on your way to a long, happy, healthy life together.Time, patience and lovewill go a long way with yourpet. Loving them is so impor-tant because they become agreat part of your life

the harbor, so Thursdayevening I wandered down tothe corner of Lewis and Northstreets around 6:45 pm.There I was fortunate torun into a group of long-time North Enders BarbaraSumma, Pam Donnaruma,Marie Simboli and anaccompanying gentlemen,Luciano Graffeo who’sgrandfather was one of thefounding fathers of the Ma-donna del Soccorso Society,(who could not keep up withthese ladies!)

They welcomed me intotheir merry band and pro-vided both an escort and touras they led me on a shortcutto the harbor where we couldwatch the arriving proces-sion and secure a good spotto see the ceremony from.On the way, we stopped bythe statue of ChristopherColumbus to see the namesof the North Enders whowere instrumental in therenaming of WaterfrontPark, including Pam’s par-ents, Caesar and Phyllis.

The ceremony was framedby a gorgeous summerevening sky full of pinkclouds, reminding me of thatold saying, “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight …” So appro-priate. On stage with the of-

ficers of the Fisherman’sSociety were Father Claudeof St. Leonard’s (whose in-spiring sermons I wasstrongly encouraged to gohear some morning), the“Flying Angel” and her “SideAngels” (adorable!), andAngela Menino (there to tossout the first flowers inmemory of her husband,Mayor Tom, whom we sadlylost earlier this year.)

I couldn’t help but noticeAngela and my friends ex-changing a smile and awave. In fact, there wasquite a bit of that going on! Icontinue to be impressed bythe closeness of the Italiancommunity and their will-ingness to accept all new-comers. I wanted to live nearthe water, but I can’t imag-ine feeling more welcome inCharlestown or Southiethan in the North End.

After all the flowers werestrewn on the water and thespeeches and benedictionsconcluded, the processionpulled itself back into forma-tion and headed back toLewis Street, a happy throng(of which I was honored to bea part) in its wake. Along theway, we continued to meetand greet our neighbors.Definitely my favorite Feast

experience to date (and Ihave marched in a few!)Already looking forward tonext year, when I will besure to take in the GrandProcession on Sunday aswell. Here’s what I missed!

At the end of Sunday’sGrand Procession, thestatue of the Madonna re-turned home to North, Fleetand Lewis Streets wherethousands had gathered forthe famous “Flight of theAngel.” The angels recitedthe devotion in Italian fol-lowed by the entrance of theflying angel from a thirdstory window coming downto the street to meet theMadonna Del Soccorso diSciacca. At the end, confettirained on the scene in anastounding street celebra-tion. The 2015 Flying Angelwas Haley Graffeo Dufresne

with Side Angels AngelinaPalazzolo and Ava TravatoBonivita.

Devotions, music and con-fetti were all part of the Sun-day Procession at the 104th

year in the U.S. June 17th marked 130 yearssince “Liberty Enlightening the World,” nowknown as the Statue of Liberty, was first pre-sented as a gift from France to the UnitedStates. The idea for the monument was pro-posed in 1865 by French political thinkerEdouard de Laboulaye, who believed that asculpture honoring the United States —which shared common ideals with France— would inspire the French people to call fora return to the cause of democracy. Thestatue was designed by French sculptorFrederic Auguste Bartholdi, who choseNew York’s Bedloe’s Island as the locationbecause it was visible to every ship enteringNew York Harbor, at the “gateway to America.”Construction began in 1876, with Frencharchitect Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel buildingthe statue’s iron frame work. When finished,Lady Liberty was shipped from France to theU.S., then re-assembled by scores of U.S.workers, many of whom were immigrants. The Statue of Liberty was finally unveiledon October 28, 1886, before a crowd of morethan one million people. A replica of thestatue can be seen in Paris to this day, alasting symbol of liberty, freedom, andFrench-American friendship.

MUSIC FOR ALLOCCASIONS 781-648-5678

We were always doingsomething during the sum-mer months when I was akid. We traveled with Dadwhen he played the countyfairs all over the northeast,we vacationed at severalresorts in between, andlater, my folks bought a cot-tage in Winthrop, Maine.

I once asked my motherabout summer vacationswhen she was a kid. Her an-swer was, “What was a sum-mer vacation? Don’t forget,my parents were hard-work-ing and had a blue-collarmentality. Vacations, in thetrue sense of the word, werefor the rich as far as theywere concerned. Family get-togethers at specific loca-tions or in our backyard werewhat were considered vaca-tions, and that’s what wedid.”

The story Mom remem-bered took place during thesummer when she was achild. Babbononno, UnclePaul and Uncle Nick (bothpre-teen) played in the Ital-ian Marine Band in Boston. On a particular Sunday, theband was booked to play aconcert at Wood Island Parkin East Boston.

For those of you youngerthan I, you might not re-member Wood Island Park. Itwas a local recreation areathat was entered off NeptuneRoad. It had a beach, a coupleof ball fields, a refreshmentstand and a bandstand. Idon’t remember if they hada bathhouse, but I think so.

Well, Babbononno packed-up Nanna and the kids, along with the instruments, food and drink, and headedto a trolley that would dropthem off at Neptune Roadwhere the entrance of thepark was located. Therewere benches in front ofthe bandstand, but I don’tremember if Mom said thatthey sat there or spread outa blanket for all to rest on.Nanna would make surethat there was an umbrellato protect herself and mymother from the sun. I thinkpart of the ancestry onNanna’s side must havebeen due to Viking invadersin Avellino. Nanna and mymother had skin so light thata few minutes in the sunwould produce a burn.

At a certain hour (I thinkit was 2:00 pm), the bandwould begin to play Ital-ian favorites and Americanmarches. Babbononno playedthe snare drum and myuncles played clarinets inthe reed section of the band.On a side note, one of the

musicians, Guy Giraffa, would one day form the RomaBand in the North End. Forgenerations, they playedmany, many concerts, espe-cially during the summermonths when there was asaint’s feast day and festivalevery weekend.

During intermission, Nannawould break out the food shehad prepared for the after-noon. Knowing her style, there were no sandwicheson white bread. She probablyhad Italian cold cuts, anassortment of cheeses, acontainer of meatballs and acouple of loaves of bread — around one for Babbononnoand sliced scali for everyoneelse. Knowing my uncles andmother, they probably wouldhave wanted to go swim-ming, but would be givenevery excuse in the book byNanna, who was extremelyafraid of water. I don’t knowwho won out. My mothertried to adopt Nanna’s fear ofthe ocean, but it was to noavail. As I grew up, I grew tolove the water and she hadto learn how to put up withit.

Wood Island Park servedthe East Boston communityfor a few generations, butby the time I was in myteens, it had fallen into dis-array. Following WWII, localsheaded for Revere Beach forfun in the sun, food andamusements. The one partof Wood Island Park that wasalive in the late ’40s and’50s was the parking lot. Itwas used at night by youngpeople who went parking,or using the term of theday, “watching the subma-rine races.” Periodically thepolice from Station 7 woulddrive through at night andkick everyone out, but manyof them had compassion forthe young folks who wereparked at La Montaniele, the nickname given to WoodIsland Park.

In the early 1960s, theland was given or sold toLogan Airport. Dump truckscruised Neptune Road withland fill that slowly allowedWood Island Park to becomepart of an ever-growinginternational airport. Tocomply with the wishes ofhome owners on NeptuneRoad, local politician GeorgeDeLorenzo became a humanbarrier trying to stop thetrucks, but the handwritingwas on the wall, and soonWood Island Park becamepart of history.

Whenever I mentioned thelong-gone park to my folks oruncles, they all had stories

about how wonderful thepark was when they werekids. All but Uncle Gino aregone and I hope there arepeople left who will keep thememory of Wood Island Parkalive.

I’m going to change thesubject for the rest of thecolumn due to an obituaryI read prior to writing today’sstory. Grace Manfredoniapassed away last week. Sheand her husband, Ralph, were our landlords, theowners of 74 Eutaw Street, when I was a kid. Grace’sparents, Giuseppina andAngelo Barranco, owned thehouse when we first movedin during WWII; then Graceand her husband Ralph tookit over after the old-timersdied off.

Actually, Grace had beenfriendly with my mothergrowing up, and Ralph andmy father were high schoolchums, all from the sameneighborhood. When theybecame the landlords, it waslike family collecting therent. Each first of the month,Mom, Dad and I would go tothe Manfredonia house fordinner and Dad would paythe rent.

In 1948, when TV hit Bos-ton, the Manfredonia’s wereamong the first in the neigh-borhood to buy one. Threeof their children, John,Adelaide and Fred, with metagging along, would spendhours in their den watchinglive TV with Grace makinghot chocolate each time.

Her late son, John, was bornexactly one week before Iwas, and during our forma-tive years we were insepa-rable. When we became ofage, we went separate ways,John into the service andI to college. Not long after Iwas out of school, we movedout of East Boston, but Mom,Dad, Ralph and Grace kept intouch on a continual basis.

I keep informed as to whatthe Manfredonia families areup to due to John’s son,John. But, that’s a story foranother day.

TheCourt ruled that since hisbusiness was open to thepublic he couldn’t start “pick-ing and choosing customersbased on their sexual orien-tation.”

Why should a baker be re-quired to promote a messageon a cake with which he dis-agrees? His attorneys fromthe Arizona-based AllianceDefending Freedom will prob-ably take this case furtherup the line. First to the Colo-rado Supreme Court and, ifneeded, to the U.S. SupremeCourt.

Under the thinking of thethree judge panel in this lat-est case, would a Jewishbaker be required to makea wedding cake for a coupleof Neo-Nazis?

Political CorrectnessStrikes Again

The University of Texas inAustin has decided to movea statue of Confederate

President Jefferson Davisfrom an outdoor mall to anindoor exhibit. The statuehas been outdoors on displaysince before World War II.Critics say the statue hon-ors slavery and honors atraitor to his country.

When the Civil War ended, the idea was to bind up allthe wounds and become onecountry again.

When I was in school, theCivil War studies did notturn Jefferson Davis orRobert E. Lee into pseudo-Nazis. They were consideredAmericans, too, and the warwas a bloody mess thatkilled over 600,000 Ameri-cans on both sides. Slaverywas one of many issues thatled to the war, but clearly notthe only one. Mostly, that warwas fought over power be-tween the federal govern-ment and states’ rights.

It is okay to rememberJefferson Davis or GeneralLee as great men whohad great dreams. They arepart of our U.S. history. Put-ting today’s values into thelives of nineteenth centuryleaders is unfair. Just asunfair is attacking folkslike Thomas Jefferson andthe rest of our foundingfathers. Nations grow intime, they evolve into betterplaces, but we can’t do thatby pretending the past didn’thappen. We had a Civil War.We had slavery. We had JimCrow Laws. We landed a Manon the Moon. We elected Bar-rack Obama. It is all part ofour history.

Giuseppe Melchiorre Sartowas born in Italy, in whatis today the province ofTreviso, in 1835. He wasthe second of ten childrenborn to Giovanni BattistaSarto (1792–1852) andMargarita Sanson (1813–94). Though Giuseppe’schildhood was one of pov-erty, his parents valuededucation, sending him toa school 6 kilometers awayto which Giuseppe walkedeach day.

At a young age, Giuseppestudied Latin with hisvillage priest, and went onto study at the gymnasiumof Castelfranco Veneto. “In1850 he was given a schol-arship from the Diocese ofTreviso” to attend the Semi-nary of Padua, “where he

finished his classical, philosophical, and theological stud-ies with distinction.” On September 18, 1858, Giuseppe wasordained a priest, and became chaplain at Tombolo.

While at Tambolo, Father Sarto expanded his knowledgeof theology, studying both Saint Thomas Aquinas and canonlaw. In 1867, he was named pastor of Salzano in the dio-cese of Treviso. He restored the Church and expanded thehospital through funds obtained from his own begging andlabor; his two sisters, who acted as his housekeepers, wereoften at wit’s end as their brother gave away much of hisown clothing and food to the needy. He became popular withthe people through his efforts to assist the sick during thecholera plague that hit northern Italy in the early 1870s.After nine years as pastor, he was appointed Canon of thecathedral of Treviso and chancellor of the Diocese whilealso holding offices such as spiritual director and rector ofthe Treviso seminary, and examiner of the clergy. As chan-cellor, he made it possible for public school students toreceive religious instruction. As a priest and a later bishop,he often struggled over solving problems of bringing reli-gious instruction to rural and urban youth who did not havethe opportunity to attend Catholic schools. When the dio-cese of Mantua fell vacant in 1884, Pope Leo XIII namedCanon Sarto as bishop of that diocese.

Bishop Sarto found in his diocese that there was a generalopposition of the government to religion manifested inmany ways — monasteries had been suppressed, manyreligious institutions were government-managed, andChurch property was heavily taxed. All these political dis-turbances had a far-reaching effect on both the clergy andthe laity. Bishop Sarto set to work to put his diocese inorder. He gave first attention to the seminary, where byhis own example of zeal and teaching, he won back theclergy to full and faithful service. The laxity of the peoplewas attributed to neglect of parish priests in the instruc-tion of the catechism. Bishop Sarto often taught suchclasses himself and, in his pastoral visits and letters, heurged the establishment of the Confraternity of ChristianDoctrine in all parishes. In 1893, Pope Leo XIII elevatedBishop Sarto, making him Cardinal and appointing himPatriarch of Venice.

Pope Leo XIII died on August 4, 1903, Cardinal Sarto wasnamed Pope after only a four-day conclave, by a majorityof 55 out of a possible 60 votes. The humble farm boy toldhis fellow Cardinals that his name would be Pius. “As Ishall suffer, I shall take the name of those Popes who alsosuffered.”

Two of the most outstanding accomplishments ofthis saintly Pope were the inauguration of the liturgicalrenewal and the restoration of frequent communion fromchildhood. He also waged an unwavering war against theheresy and evils of Modernism, gave great impetus to bibli-cal studies, and brought about the codification of CanonLaw. His overriding concern was to renew all things inChrist.

Pope Pius X passed away on August 20, 1914. The Italianpress wrote, “A Saint is Dead.” He was canonized on May29, 1954

His last will and testament includes the striking sen-tence: “I was born poor, I have lived in poverty, and I wishto die poor.” His feast day is August 21st.

Old-Timers GameBrings Back MemoriesThis past Monday, I was

watching NECN down at theBeachmont Dunkin’ Donutsin Revere and caught aquick glimpse of the sportssegment. I instantly recog-nized Jim Lonborg from theImpossible Dream Team of1967. I still can’t believethat year is now 47 yearsago. I grew up with somehorrible Sox teams in the’50s and ’60s when there wasno Red Sox Nation. Therewas only constant pain forfans.

It was a long way betweengreatness. It took forever toget from Ted Williams’ lasthomer in 1960 and the 1967pennant tram of Yaz andLonborg.

Now that Pedro is in …

Now that Pedro Martinezwas inducted into the RedSox Hall of Fame, isn’t ittime to induct two otherRed Sox legends, too? I amthinking Tony Conigliaroand Dick Radatz. What do youthink out there? Am I right?Tony C’s career was cutshort by that horrible 1967beaning. And Radatz, whobetween 1962-64 won 40games as our closer andprobably saved at least 100games, too.

Why I ThinkOrtiz is a Crybaby

Yes, Dave Ortiz has had agreat career as a Red Soxslugger and reminds manyof Red Sox slugger of old,Jimmy Foxx. But when itcomes to his crying, I can’ttake it without laughing.Earlier this season when he

was really struggling at theplate, he stated the follow-ing, “The schedule we haveis just unbelievable. It’spretty bad, man. It’s prettybad. I’m not using that as anexcuse (HE ISN’T?) but we’rehuman and we go every-where to play, right?”

This Letter Writeron the Mark

A while back, I read a greatletter in the Boston Globe bya Paul Mahoney of Winthropand clipped it out, I likedit so much. The letterwas printed about a monthago. Mahoney stated, “DavidOrtiz thinks the 502-foothomer by Ted Williams in1946 was bull. I use thesame word every time Iwatch Big Papi hit into theshift instead of the wide-open left field — somethingWilliams did with ease. There are hitters and thereare sluggers. I’ll take a hit-ter every time.”

Kudos to Paul Mahoney!

On His Best Night

Boxing RingsideWITH BOBBY FRANKLIN

On a number of occasionsI have speculated, as all box-ing fans do, about what theoutcome of dream matchesbetween greats of the pastwould be. It is a favorite topicof discussion when fightpeople congregate. Alongwith these one-on-one hypo-thetical matches, fightpeople also are fond of lists, such as the ten greatest ineach division, the hardestpunchers, the fastest, smartest, most durable, and,of course, the pound forpound best of all time. Thesediscussions are quite livelyand often turn into heateddebates with each fan hav-ing his bias for a certainfighter or style of fighting. Some are convinced that thefighters of today are supe-rior, while others are solidold school devotees.

In his fine book The Godsof War, author SpringsToledo has his list of thepound-for-pound greatest ac-cording to some very inter-esting criteria he sets out.It is one of the best I haveseen and worth checkingout. He is thoughtful, andwhile you may not agreewith his choices, you mightenjoy applying his methodwhile creating your own list.

One of his criterions is lon-gevity. The amount of timea fighter was active in thering while remaining aviable force. I agree that thelength of a career is a veryimportant factor when rat-ing a fighter as an all-timegreat, but what about whenpicking a winner in a one-on-one match up? How do wego about picking a winner, what criteria do we use inthat case?

I thought about a matchupbetween Joe Louis and JoeFrazier. Frazier fought from1965 until 1976 (he did havean ill-advised comebackfight in 1981, but I won’tcount that.) He had a total of37 fights with 4 losses.

Joe Louis fought from 1937until 1949, with a total of 56fights, losing only once. Hethen made a comeback in1950 with 10 fights, of whichhe lost only 2, for a recordcareer totalof 66 wins. Thatis considerably more thanJoe Frazier had.

Now, to take things a stepfurther, I would like to ex-plore how long each boxerwas at or near his peak per-formance during his career. Both had a number of fightsas they rose through theranks and were fine-tuningtheir skills. Joe Frazier re-ally stepped into the majorleagues with his devastat-ing stoppage of GeorgeChuvalo in 1967. He contin-ued to improve after that, and I would have to say hewas at his peak from 1969to 1971. In this period,he defeated Jerry Quarry,Jimmy Ellis, Bob Foster, andMuhammad Ali. After hisincredible victory over Ali, Ibelieve Joe began to deterio-rate rapidly. He was de-stroyed by George Foremantwice, taken the distance byJoe Bugner, had repeat winsagainst Ellis and Quarry(both of whom were well pasttheir primes at that point),and beat Ron Stander andTerry Danils, hardly top tierfighters. He did give Ali twovery tough fights, but Ali wasa shell of his former self bythen as well.

Joe Louis, on the otherhand, defended his title 27times over 11 years. Withthe exception of the firstWalcott fight, all of the BrownBomber’s defenses were de-cisive. Billy Conn gave himall he could handle for 13rounds, but in the end theformer light heavyweightchamp was counted out.Louis was also inactive for aperiod during WW II and wasshowing a bit of age as hiscareer continued into thelate 1940s, but he was stilldominant. Even during hiscomeback, he was a forceto be reckoned with, losingonly to Ezzard Charles andRocky Marciano.

The question now is howwould you look at a matchupbetween these two greatchampions. Looking at theirtotal careers, I would thinkmost boxing aficionadoswould rate Joe Louis thegreater fighter. But whathappens if you put then inopposite corners on the bestnight of their careers? Say,the Louis of the secondSchmeling fight versus theFrazier of the first Ali fight?

And this is where boxinggets interesting. WhenLouis fought Schmeling thesecond time, his will to win,his desire to avenge his onlyloss, coupled with the pres-sure to defend the honor ofthe country, put him in anemotional state that alongwith his amazing skillsmade him perform at a levelI don’t think he could everachieve again.

When Frazier stepped intothe ring on that Marchevening in 1971, he also hada desire to win so strong thatI believe Ali would have hadto kill him in order to defeathim. While I believe Joe wasin better physical shape forthe Ellis fight (Joe was over-trained and not well thenight of the Ali fight), he waslike a man possessed and itshowed.

Both Louis and Frazierin their primes weregreat fighters. Louis’s primelasted much longer thenFrazier’s, but what wouldhave happened had theymet on their best nights?

The major intangible hereis the emotional state ofeach champion on thatnight. While I am sure theywould both bring their all toa match up as they alwaysdid, I just don’t think eachwould be in the same emo-tional state that they werefor those bouts. I also believethe Louis of the secondSchmeling fight was the ul-timate fighting machine. His adrenaline surge madehim almost super humanthat night. He was neversharper and took the Ger-man apart with not onlypower but also skill. Yes, hefought with rage, but hechanneled that rage into hisamazing ability and boxingknowledge. It was beautifuland terribly brutal to watch.

With Frazier, I have to sayhe beat Ali by will; he brokeMuhammad down, but tooka beating while doing it. Notto take away from his skill, but he was an unstoppableforce that night.

Seeing two greats fromthe past fight is somethingall of us dream about. See-ing them on their bestnights takes it a stepfurther.

As the month of Augustprogresses and the count-down to the opening of Sep-tember training camp comescloser, it will be interestingto see how the philosophyof Bruins General ManagerDon Sweeney will shape theB’s as they move forward.

We were going to say newGM, but it really doesn’tseem to fit exactly in this in-stance since Don has beenin the B’s front office for agood number of years — in-cluding his last post as assis-tant GM. Thus, he has at-tended just about all of thenumerous meetings withexecutives, coaches and staffover the last several seasons.

“I think one of the distinctadvantages I have is thatI’ve been a Boston Bruin,”noted Sweeney. “I was a Bos-ton Bruins player for 15years, knocked on the door-step of the Stanley Cup andthen won it as part of themanagement group. There’sa tremendous amount ofgreat people that I have hadthe opportunity to work with, day in and day out, over thepast eight years in a numberof different capacities. It’s anadvantage to know peopleand have people being com-fortable working with me. Iwould hope that I’m anapproachable person in thatway. I also expect people tochallenge me to make theright decisions.”

To be sure, Sweeney doeshave what he calls “an insti-tutional knowledge” of theBruins from a number of per-spectives. “I’m excited aboutthe challenges to get backwhere we need to go. I knowwhat it’s like to be booed inthis city, to be cheered in thiscity and I expect at times totake criticism.”

Getting back to the post-season may not be that big astep. It’s true that the B’s didnot make the Stanley Cupplayoffs last spring. But theywere in contention for a play-off berth until the last nightof the regular season. As theNCAA National Champion-ship game between BostonUniversity and ProvidenceCollege was being played atthe Garden back on April 12,the B’s were sent to theNHL sidelines while on theroad.

They had finished the sea-son with 96 points — not quitegood enough. Over the courseof the long 82-game season, another win or two by theB’s, or another loss or twoby other contending teams, and there would have beenpostseason action on Cause-way Street. It was that close.Indeed, perhaps what hurtthe most was how close theycame.

“You don’t want to be on theoutside looking in,” notedSweeney. “I know that intalking to our players that’sthe way they feel as well. They are anxious to get backand move forward with theprocess.”

One characteristic that willnot change is how Sweeneyinteracts with players —something that he has been

doing for years in his dualcapacities with the B’s andthe Providence Bruins.

“A big part of my makeup isthe communications aspect.I’ve spoken to every playerthat’s ever gone up and downin terms of to Providence andto Boston. I’ve had one-on-one conversations with eachof them. That’s not going tochange in terms of my com-munication with players andbeing comfortable in a lockerroom. That was where I wascomfortable for a lot of yearsand I’m going to continue todo that. That way, you have apulse on things.”

Sweeney is big on acquir-ing young players, educat-ing them and mentoringthem as they progress andmature through the system.Although there have beentrades this summer — send-ing some players on theirway and acquiring others —Sweeney has made it clearthat he hopes to put moreemphasis on developing play-ers from within the B’sorganization.

“It starts with the develop-ment camp,” said Sweeney, who actually was in chargeof the event for several years.“The whole impetus behindthe development camp is tobe able to give young playersan idea of what it’s goingto take [to play professionalhockey]. We get to knowthem, they get to know usand they get to know abouteach other.”

Sweeney stressed thatplayers need to be given timeto develop. “When we’ve donethe process well, we’ve devel-oped players. But they’re notready-made players whenthey get here. It’s not a plugand play system. That’s wherethe impatience comes in attimes. We’ve made somemistakes and allowed someplayers to leave this organi-zation that we might regret. But going forward, I’d like toallow us the opportunity tonot have the impatience andto work with them and allowthem the proper time at theNHL level to get acclimated. You can’t trade anything inthis league for experience.”

He indicated that a big partof the process is gettingyoung players to be able toidentify with the organiza-tion — about what it meansto be a Bruin. “It’s incrediblyimportant. Spend some timewith the players in Provi-dence and you come tounderstand. It’s one thing tothrow the words culture andidentity around, it’s anotherthing to live them, breathethem and teach them. Sowe need to be effective incommunicating what that’slike.”

Of course the prime playersof seasons past — ZdenoChara, Patrice Bergeron,David Krejci, Brad Marchandand Tuukka Rask — remainas the centerpieces of theteam. Sweeney will ask themto be leaders on the ice whilehe provides direction fromthe office. Working together,a berth in the 2016 playoffsmay well become a reality.
