When you are the type of person who loves to give to others it is very difficult to receivehellipeven in times of need You can be kind but have difficulty in

accepting the kindness of others I suffer from that condition I come from a legacy of givers from my grandparents Floyd and Essie Brown to my grandmother Melba Minter to my parents Hardy and Cheryl who have committed much of their adult lives to community service In my family at an early age we are trained to give to others So the recent fire that devastated us and destroyed much of our business and personal property left me scrambling trying to maintain my daily routine of running the paper while dealing with the enormous loss as well as with insurance adjusters contractors environmental consultants and others I kept my head down and just kept working with the rest of my team trying not to think about the tremendous clean-up and rebuilding process I was about to go through As the news started trickling out I started getting text messages phones calls Facebook posts and shares and general hugs and well-wishes from our friends in the community as I went about my regular work day A serendipitous encounter at the Regal Movie Theater in Riverside with Professors Deborah Wong Christine Gailey and Carole Nagengast shortly after the fire netted us some supplies and a loaned computer And Deborah called our friends in the media prompting The Press Enterprise to visit our burned out structure and publish a story on our tragedy I say serendipitous because when Elizabeth Balistreri told her boss Richard Roth about our situation after she read the article he immediately thought to offer his underutilized law office as a temporary office for the VOICE It is a tremendous savings for us as well as a comfortable landing place as we continue to sift through the rubble for tear sheets art awards and a few other items of value ndash some literal some sentimental I hadnrsquot cried throughout this entire ordeal but Mr Rothrsquos gesture brought tears to my eyes We are now in that space and are extremely appreciative of his kindness This will allow us to continue to provide vital news and information to you - our community - from a great space on the first floor of the Innovation Building on the corner of Spruce and Chicago in Riverside We are open for business Monday thru Friday 9 am to 5 pm Please stop by and visit ushellipwersquoll give you a newspaper a cup of coffee or tea and a smilehellip and if you smell what seems to be smoke when you shake my hand or give me a hug itrsquos probably because I just returned from the old office trying to find something else I just discovered was still missing

The third of five boys born in the Bronx to a single mother who dropped out of high school Darryl

Briggs was starting out with at least two strikes against him Growing up poor Black and bright in the Bronx without guidance by the time he got to high school he already felt completely ignored almost invisible Darrylrsquos high-poverty high school was eight floors overflowing with 8000 students and an obvious lack of resources ldquoThere were easily 35 students to a classroom and there werenrsquot even 35 desks in the classroom for the 35 students to sit in there was one lab in the entire schoolrdquo The physical conditions discouraged learning but for Darryl the worst part was the lack of one-on-one attention His classes were uninteresting and way too easy None of the teachers noticed his potential and need for academic challenges or even noticed him at all When he skipped class no one asked why When he started hanging out with the ldquowrong crowdrdquo no one told him that wasnrsquot a good idea When he was 15 Darryl ran away from home and got arrested and sentenced to two months in juvenile detention centers When he tried to go back to high school school officials said without guidance and support he couldnrsquot come back They suggested he get a GED Soon he was arrested again The turning point for Darryl was getting involved as a community organizer finding a mentor and going through leadership training programs A friend introduced him to a community organizing group where Darryl met the person he now calls his lifetime mentor and found his calling making a positive difference for other young people He became a youth program coordinator for a nonprofit organization For a Better Bronx focused on combating youth and environment disparities in the South Bronx and discovered he wanted to get his GED and continue his education Darryl recently graduated from Bronx Community College and is pursuing a bachelorrsquos degree in social work at Lehman College He chose social work because it offers an opportunity for him to continue making the one-on-one connections he missed so much An

Invisible Childrenalumnus and current national trainer for the Childrenrsquos Defense Fund (CDF)rsquos Young Advocate Leadership Training (YALT) program Darryl was a panelist at the Educational Testing Service-CDFrsquos June symposium in a session on ldquoLived Experiencerdquo which helped participants understand the struggles young Black males face and supports they need in the high school years Darrylrsquos ideas about what works come partly from his personal experience with what didnrsquot work in the all-too-common schools like the one he dropped out of Darryl feels strongly that one caring adult can make all the difference ldquoThatrsquos what I was lacking as far as my high school experience and as far as my adolescence I didnrsquot have really anyone to guide me and say hey D maybe you could take this route instead of this route maybe you could make this decision instead of that decision or maybe I could hold your hand while you do this instead of doing thatrdquo Darryl appreciates that hersquos able to connect with and serve as an example for the young people he works with because they know he comes from the same place they do But even when teachers donrsquot automatically have that connection with their students Darryl stressed the importance of teachers knowing something about the community their students come from and making the effort to establish some connections ldquoA sense of cultural competence needs to play a role We have many teachers that come from different backgroundsrdquo Something as simple as giving all staff a tour of the surrounding neighborhood can be a start ldquoEven those small little things like lsquoOkay I bought cereal therersquo you can use that to connect to your students because theyrsquore like lsquoAll right Well my mom shops in said places [too]rsquo So yoursquove established that connection off of something you wouldnrsquot even expectrdquo Once again it comes back to adults making personal connections with the children they serve Darrylrsquos ultimate goal is to found a nonprofit serving young people in the juvenile justice system He uses his own story for the young people he works with today to keep them in school and out of prison ldquoIt sounds like a clicheacute but never give up because there are many different roads to achieve the same goal So whichever venue you take just never give up and ultimately be the best at whatever it is you dordquo

F or six years two Cal State San Bernardino professors documented photographed and reflected on the cultural urban landscape of

the city of San Bernardino Professor and critically acclaimed poet Juan Delgado of the CSUSB English department and professor and accomplished photographer Thomas McGovern of the art department have published a new book of poetry and portraits ldquoVital Signsrdquo The book is published by Heyday Publications The book is a documentary photography project that takes a visual tour through the city of San Bernardino portraying business signs and other wall paintings that represent the intensity of the stories of the working-class Latino communities in the Inland Empire McGovern who teaches photography at CSUSB uses his photos of hand-painted signs and murals to depict the compellingly rich stories of the immigrant population of San Bernardino a city often portrayed by media as a center of urban blight and high crime McGovern believes that the Mexican muralist tradition had an obvious influence on the hand-made signs used for marketing But the signs also suggest the ldquoeconomics of a modest city where immigrants and established locals alike set up shop and try to provide for themselves and their communitiesrdquo As a photographer I am interested in the countless details of our city that are often overlooked ignored or even reviled but which I find emblematic of our richly diverse communityrdquo McGovern said ldquoI was lucky to collaborate with Juan Delgado a poet who shares this sensibility and whose words enhance my images creating what we feel is an authentic portrait of San Bernardino he said Delgado who teaches creative writing and Chicano literature at CSUSB was named the 2013 outstanding professor last spring I hope that lsquoVital Signsrsquo reminds people that gazing at art is not an escape from the world but a way to situate ourselves in our ever-present pastrdquo Delgado said Delgadorsquos work often portrays the realities of

the immigrant experience with its related poverty and hardships as illustrated in his 1998 collection of poems ldquoEl Campordquo about Mexican farm workers and their hardships as illustrated in his 1998 collection of poems ldquoEl Campordquo about Mexican farm workers and their families ldquoOur book is a testament to our fondness for San Bernardino and

R iverside County District Attorney Paul Zellerbach recently confirmed that Moreno Valley Councilman Marcelo Co has been

arrested on eight felonies including fraud and grand theft of property filing fraudulent documents and presenting a false claim 64-year-old Co was arrested at his house along the 16500 block of Saddlebrook Lane of Moreno Valley which the embattled councilman used as his address in campaign paperwork Released on a $15000 bail Co was booked at the downtown Riverside jail around 503 pm In an email statement to this office Senior Public Information Specialist John Hall states that this investigation is entirely separate from any other investigation involving Co but would not go

MoVal Councilman Arrestedinto any further details on the other investigation ldquoThis case involves the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program Co is listed in that program as a provider for his mother and therefore collected IHSS income for her carerdquo states Hall ldquoIt is alleged that it would have been impossible for Co to provide care to his mother during certain periods of time because she was not in the United States while he still was in the country It was determined through the investigation that Co reportedly collected nearly $15000 in state funds during the times when he could not have been caring for her as they were in different countriesrdquo The In-Home Supportive Services Program serves low-income seniors and people with disabilities

L oma Linda University Health will receive a grant of $990000 from Covered California to conduct outreach and education

programs on how starting in 2014 Californians can access affordable health care coverage under the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act Loma Linda University Health (LLUH) in partnership with Community Clinic Association of San Bernardino County is one of 48 lead organizations receiving grant awards totaling $37 million from Covered California to help residents access affordable health care coverage The selected organizations will reach nearly nine million people and more than 200000 small businesses in Californiarsquos 58 counties Covered California will focus its outreach on 53 million Californians in need of individual insurance about half of who may be eligible for financial assistance with their premiums ldquoWe are very excited to build on partnerships with organizations that have trusted relationships in diverse communities throughout the staterdquo says Peter V Lee executive director of Covered California Covered California is charged with creating a new insurance marketplace in which

individuals and small businesses can get access to health insurance as provided by the federal health care law ldquoLoma Lindarsquos strategy to use provider educators that will champion Covered California has great outreach potentialrdquo says Sarah Soto-Taylor Covered California deputy director of community affairs ldquoOur partnership with Loma Linda will help raise awareness about our new health care marketplace in San Bernardino County among the medical professionals who come in contact daily with consumers who may benefit from premium assistancerdquo The grant will allow LLUH and the Community Clinic Association of San Bernardino County to pursue an outreach plan developed under the leadership of Dora Barilla associate director of the LLUH Institute for Community Partnerships to reach out to diverse uninsured populations within the county The plan includes staging group meetings attending community events coordinating with community clinics and educating health care providers about the new California Health Benefit Exchange a major component of the federal health care law

A s an educator for more than two decades I hold a deep conviction on providing the knowledge necessary for any situation

Just as important is the responsibility to stop the spread of misinformation and myth Beginning January 1st Americans will see the Affordable Care Act take root at the individual level Many have used that date as an opportunity to warp and twist facts as it suits them confusing citizens to advance an agenda Now I think is the time we set some of the facts straight Since President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law in March 2010 we have already seen numerous reforms take shape Already a new Patientrsquos Bill of Rights has gone into effect protecting consumers from a range of the health industryrsquos abuses No longer are children denied coverage based on pre-existing conditions No longer do seniors have to pay full price for prescription drugs under Medicare No longer can insurance companies raise rates without cause and not be held accountable The lawrsquos efforts to tackle healthcare fraud have recovered more than $42 billion in taxpayer dollars in 2012 alone These are big steps in the right direction and we are about to take one more In 2014 new state run healthcare exchanges will begin operating ndash their goal being to expand coverage for those who need it and provide everyone with a plan most beneficial to them Leading the charge is Californiarsquos own initiative ldquoCovered Californiardquo This program will help individuals and families find the plan thatrsquos best for them by allowing them to compare health coverage in one easy place and learn if they qualify for tax credits that help bring down the cost of care

Implementing Health Care Reform The plan appears to be working Released earlier this year the Covered California rates were found to be as much as 29 percent below the average 2013 premiums small employers pay Not limited to just California the New York health care exchange also released its rates earlier this year and similarly proved to be a better value as rates were on average 53 percent lower than current individual direct-pay rates Progress is being made that much is clear Yet there are those who continue to throw up roadblocks at every opportunity We have seen Congressional Republicans waste time and tax dollars attempting to overturn the Affordable Care Act 40 times regardless of the Supreme Courtrsquos ruling or the pressing need to fix a bloated flawed health system Several Republican governors are trying to block the lawrsquos implementation wherever they can stifling the benefits despite the people in their state expressing an overwhelming need for change I have little patience for those trying to undo this improvement Our job is not to stand in the way of these advances but work with our constituents and be a source of information and direction My office will be hosting an Affordable Care Act Town Hall in conjunction with State Senator Richard Roth and Assemblyman Jose Medina on Saturday August 24th at the Moreno Valley Convention and Recreation Center at 1000am to illustrate the process and answer questions Americans need healthcare and deserve as many opportunities as can be provided I hope yoursquoll join me on August 24th to learn more about taking advantage of these new programs

preachers son from Atlanta talking about his dream for the country We dont need a history lesson Even if we werent at the March itself - even for those like me who were not yet born - Dr Kings words are etched into our minds as deeply as they are inscribed in stone at the base of his memorial The preachers son has taken his rightful place in the pantheon of national heroes We dont need to watch a rerun of that fateful day We need a sequel On Saturday August 24th the NAACP is co-hosting a sequel to the March on Washington for Jobs and Justice the 2013 March on Washington The march begins at 800 am at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial Join us If this year has shown us anything its that the work of the 1963 march is not yet finished Texas and South Carolina are sprinting forward with voter ID after the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act African American unemployment has flat lined Our children are gunned down each and every day in senseless acts of violence Trayvon Martin lies in the ground after one such senseless act At the same time our culture of civic engagement is experiencing a renaissance In

Making History Againthe past month hundreds of cities held vigils and rallies to protest the Zimmerman verdict The nation is having a serious conversation about racial profiling for the first time since 911 In North Carolina Moral Mondays has grown larger with each passing week We have the numbers and we have the capacity for motivation The question is whether we will allow ourselves to be motivated So join us - NAACP National Action Network Realizing the Dream and others - on the National Mall on August 24th If you live within two hours of Washington DC hop in a car or on a bus - or even better organize a bus If you live farther away you are still encouraged to come and be a part of history The 2013 March on Washington will be a peoples movement It will not be fueled by cash - it will only be energized by your decision to participate We need you there to help us gain a critical mass of voices and prove once again that organized people can beat organized money any time On this fiftieth anniversary of the March on Washington we should celebrate our history but its more important that we never stop making history Meet us at the Lincoln Memorial Join us on August 24th

Dear Dr Levister My sister was just diagnosed with lupus What causes it and is it contagious GFDear GF Lupus (its full medical name is Systemic lupus erythematosus) (SLE) is a mysterious illness Although various aspects of it were described as far back as the 1840s and it was recognized as a systemic disease well over a century ago the cause is still unknown and a cure is still elusive Like AIDS lupus involves the immune system There the similarity ends Lupus is not transmissible from one individual to another in no case has contagion even been suspected In the majority of patients it does not prove fatal and the illness is essentially the opposite of AIDS Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease which causes inflammation of various parts of the body especially the skin joints and kidneys It may also affect the blood The immune system normally protects the body against viruses bacteria and other foreign invaders In an autoimmune disease like lupus the immune system loses its ability to tell the difference between foreign substances and its own cells and tissues The immune system then makes antibodies directed against the body

Understand Lupusitself When lupus first sets in symptoms such as fatigue and pain are often non-specific They can be signs of so many other health problems which can make diagnosis hard The most common complaint people have is fatigue that is so severe it stops them from being able to function normally This fatigue is often related to fibromyalgia Fever muscle and joint pain are also quite common Sometimes people with lupus experience a flare This occurs when some symptoms appear or get worse for short periods then disappear or get better Even if you take medicine for lupus you may find that there are times when the symptoms become worse Learning to recognize that a flare is coming can help you take steps to cope with it Many people feel very tired or have pain a rash a fever stomach discomfort headache or dizziness just before a flare Itrsquos estimated that more than 16000 Americans develop lupus each year More than 90 percent of people with lupus are women between the ages of 15 and 45 In the United States lupus is more common among African Americans Asians Hispanics and Native Americans than Caucasians

A n admiring crowd of 700 people cheered on the inaugural class of 50 students in UC Riversides School of Medicine on Friday Aug 9 Each

student slipped into the doctorrsquos white coat held by a faculty member to mark the beginning of four years of hard work The live string quartet floral arrangements beautiful programs and colorful lights are not typical for UCRrsquos Student Recreation Center -- the home court of UCR basketball -- but the campus needed its biggest room to fit the students the families the faculty and all the community supporters of this new kind of medical school designed to increase the supply of primary care doctors practicing in the Inland Empire ldquoIrsquove been telling the students this is a once in a lifetime event like the sighting of Haleyrsquos comet said Kendrick A Davis director of medical education for the UCR School of Medicine ldquoIt is rare that you are in the right spot and you can take advantage of it It is beyond a milestone You are talking about embarking on something that hasnrsquot

G eorge (Elder) Hickman began his career as an urban farmer in 1975 after retiring from the US Air Force He bought land

in Bloomington then a vineyard before learning that the market for that kind of grapes was below the cost to grow them In time he began to focus on gardening for the kinds of food his family enjoyed Word spread interest went up orders for fresh southern-style foods flowed in and people began calling or driving to Hickman Farms

from the ebony enclaves of Southern California to as far away as Las Vegas for organically grown pesticide free fresh fruits and vegetables Farming is hard work and subject to lots of risk Times tastes and markets go up and down At times in the past Elder Hickman hired as many as 20 employees now he has two employees who have been with him for many years and are like family His health is different from when he began He states that he may retire eventually Ardess Lilly well known in the Inland Empire from his work with the Conservation Corps and

damage from insects not controlled by the use of pesticides Things were fine until the delivery of manure fertilizer several years ago spread over their fields This manure contained weeds that grow rapidly and choke off young low-growing crops Deeply rooted these weeds must be hand pulled by those trained to know the weeds from the crops Nova occasionally has been able to recruit volunteers from youth church and civic organizations for a ldquoDown to Earthrdquo excursion to the farm This past July the San FranciscoBayview Hunters Point community which operates urban farms as an employment development program sent a van full of youth from Hunters Point Family (HPF) community development

agency to Hickman Farms and participated in helping pull weeds However news that a small gopher snake had just been found and removed from the area where they would work did not stimulate the girlsrsquo enthusiasm to dig in or get down with pulling weeds Still a couple rows of okra plants were cleared In preparation for market day everyone is involved harvesting sorting rinsing or washing banding bagging or boxing the fruits and vegetables for delivery to customers or to farmers market locations In order to regularize their business KRSTMoorCrestmore Produce Hickman Farms since 2006 has provided delivery of 30 pounds of selected seasonal organically grown fresh fruits and vegetables to customers

mainly in the Los Angeles Leimert Park and Crenshaw areas They are ready to expand service to individuals groups and others in the Inland Empire Almost everyone who shops for fresh fruits and vegetables at the Crestmore Produce Market which meets every Saturday from 100 pm to 600 pm at the community center on Highland Avenue at Western arrives by auto There they will find Ardess Lilly has opened his farmers market with tables chairs an awning and a load of produce For some customers its like a burger drive-thru but most park check out the sale items and buy a bag or two as others stay a while to visit or meet someone new

ldquoUltimately our strongest supporters have always been our community individually and collectivelyrdquo he said He noted the Riverside Chamber of Commerce the California Medical Association the Riverside County Board of Supervisors the Desert Healthcare District the Greater Riverside Hispanic Chamber of Commerce the Citizens University Committee the Vines Society and the medical associations in Riverside and San Bernardino counties among many others Fridayrsquos ceremony served as a reminder about the role of doctors in our lives the witness to our births and our deaths our tragedies and our recoveries ldquoWe need to include the patient as well as the families in the decisions about their healthrdquo said Dr Phyllis A Guze the executive dean for the school and the keynote speaker at the ceremony She told a story about her own hospitalization after an accident and how many times she felt that the doctors were asking how she was but not listening to her answer ldquoBut one of my physicians asked me what I thought and listenedrdquo Guze said ldquoHe brought to me the human personal touch and I will be forever grateful So I challenge you as you start your career to be the doctor that you want to go to if you get sickrdquo Janel Gracia one of the members of the first class said she was inspired She said receiving her own coat ldquomakes it feel 100 percent realrdquo She did her undergraduate work at UC Riverside and currently serves as a mentor in the outreach

programs that build a pipeline of culturally diverse college students qualified to go to medical school The week of orientation has convinced her that she made the right choice for medical school ldquoWe are all becoming good friendsrdquo she said ldquoIn four years we will be best friendsrdquo Jaire Saunders another member of the class was surrounded by his parents and a brother who were beaming with pride as they talked about this new accomplishment in his life Gracia Saunders and all the members of the first class have what it takes to launch the school on the right foot said Davis who has a PhD in educational psychology and got to know the students during orientation ldquoIrsquom an evaluator Irsquom the data guy for the UCR School of Medicine for evaluation measurement and assessment ldquoI was blown awayrdquo he said ldquoI think they are a stellar classrdquo

about the facility how state legislation and health policies impact the hospital and its patients and to see demonstrations of the hospitalrsquos innovative use of technology in patient care During the visit Senator Torres hospital senior leaders and board members toured Maternal Child Services which includes labor and delivery couplet care and the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) On average over 2100 babies are delivered annually at Community Hospital Senator Torres viewed a demonstration of the hospitalrsquos new obstetric birthing and newborn simulators and learned how together they provide hands-on training for some of the most difficult situations that can arise during labor and delivery ldquoWe are very fortunate to have this technology available in the 32nd District It was impressive to see how the advanced birthing and newborn

S an Bernardino County students in grades from 2-11 as a whole showed mixed results on the Standardized Testing and

Reporting (STAR) program according to data released today by the California Department of Education Countywide the percentage of students scoring proficient or above increased in 13 grade level or subject matter indicators maintained prior yearrsquos growth in four indicators and saw nominal declines in 21 indicators ldquoI remain impressed with the growth we have seen in the number of students scoring proficient and above on the STAR testing program over timerdquo County Superintendent Gary Thomas said ldquoOur staff and students have shown outstanding effort in meeting Californiarsquos rigorous standards even through challenging budget times Countywide proficiency rates overall were slightly lower than state scores however statewide

On June 25 2013 the state legislature passed AB 93 which eliminates the current Enterprise Zone Program in California as of January 1 2014 However any credits earned through December 31 2013 can be carried forward and utilized as needed for 10 years The program has been eliminated but there is still time to save

The San Bernardino Valley Enterprise Zone (SBVEZ) is one of 40 enterprise zones established by the California Legislature and regulated by the Department of Housing and Community Development that provides tax incentives to businesses in distressed communities The SBVEZ covers a 46 square mile area that includes the city of Colton city of San Bernardino and portions of unincorporated San Bernardino County Enterprise zones help businesses reduce their annual state income tax through a tax credit on a portion of wages paid to local workers and on the sales tax paid on eligible equipment purchases

The Enterprise Zone Program consists of five State tax incentives the most lucrative are the Hiring Credit and the Sales and Use Tax Credit

Hiring Credit ndash Reduce workforce and training costs by expanding with local hires

The HIRING CREDIT rewards businesses for hiring and training local workers A business can claim up to $37440 for a single eligible worker for the first five years of employment The credit allows you to claim a percentage of actual wages paid up to $12 per hour Unused credit can be carried forward for 10 years

Sample calculationBased on a full time employee receiving $12 per hour working a 40-hour work week and earning $24960 in annual wages the credit for the five-year period is as follows

The SALES amp USE TAX CREDIT rewards businesses for pro-growth capital investments made by businesses in the SBVEZ Each year corporations can claim up to $20 million of the sales or use tax paid or incurred to purchase ldquoqualified equipmentrdquo that is located and used exclusively in the SBVEZ Individuals estates trusts and partnerships can claim up to $1 million Unused credit can be carried forward for 10 years

Qualified property includes machinery and machinery parts used to

bull Manufacture process fabricate or assemble a productbull Produce renewable energy resources (such as solar systems and smart lighting)bull Control air or water pollutionbull Process data and communicate (computers CAD systems copy machines telephone systems and faxes)

The SBVEZ has helped more than 200 small and large local businesses save more than $17 million in California state income tax These savings have also allowed local companies to expand current business operations or begin new business ventures Businesses currently participating in the SBVEZ include Global Environmental Products Simpson Strong-Tie Peppertree Distributors Chaparral Motorsports Restaurant Depot Ashley Furniture and Hayden Industrial Products

A few days ago I had the opportunity to grab a beer with Dr Richard Olds Dean of UCRrsquos School of Medicine It was the day after he had conducted the white coat ceremony welcoming the inaugural class of medical students to the campus

On his journey to UC RiversidePeople who know me kind of laugh when they see me in this job because they actually refer to this as a typical lsquoOldsrsquo kind of job And what they mean by that is if you knew my father and his background this is exactly the kind of jobs often referred to as lost causes or impossible causes that he would take on

On his father Dr Glenn Olds and ldquolost causesrdquoHe was not only first in his family ever to go to college but his brothers were the only ones to ever graduate from high school And he graduated valedictorian in a class of eight people in a littlehellip practically three-room high school He never would have even gone to college if he hadnrsquot been lucky In those days the president of a little Methodist college Williamette University would go around and listen to all these graduation speeches from all these little schools and it must have been a great address because he walked up to my father afterwards and asked him ldquowhat are you doing next yearrdquo and my father said ldquoIrsquom going to go work in the logging camps with my brothers and my fatherrdquohellip and he offered my dad a scholarship

He ultimately graduated from that school and went on to become an ordained Methodist minister and then got a masterrsquos at Northwestern and eventually a PhD at Yale

The first of his if you will lost causes was his second presidency he went to Kent State after the kids had been shot which had to be like the worst presidency in the world and he basically

Dr Richard Olds Dean of UCRrsquos School of Medicinespent nine years rebuilding that university and bringing it backhellip and then he actually left Kent State because the Bishop of the Methodist church said lsquowe have a problem I think yoursquore the only guy in the US who can do thisrsquo There was a little private school in Alaska called Alaska Methodist University in Anchorage and it had been bankrupt and closed for seven years He raised $125 million made it nonsectarian re-named it Alaska Pacific University and basically re-built that school

On why the UCR positionRemember Irsquom a tropical disease specialist so I spend most of my life in third world countries and I see what people can do with no money but a strong commitment on the part of those communities to do something worthwhile

I had been looking for deanrsquos jobs and most of the existing deanrsquos jobs were okay but you were coming in taking over an existing structure where pretty much everything was set and the advantage of this one (UCR) is that the missions of the school were missions that I personally believed in But interestingly enough I didnrsquot think they had figured out how to deliver the missions and I started thinking about things that I had seen work in third world countries quite frankly and I said you know you can solve this problem but the way yoursquore thinking is wrong

I think in part because this was a job that looked pretty risky in part because I thought I had some ideas that I thought would work but I probably couldnrsquot convince traditional places that this was the direction to go in I certainly couldnrsquot tell them these were ideas that worked in third world countries so they ought to work here And although it was a high-risk job I guess this was an lsquoOldsrsquo kind of job it turned out And it actually turned out more high-risk than I had thought But

thatrsquos really why I came here

On fulfilling the missionsRemember no matter what your plan is you have to be able to adjust it if it doesnrsquot work The tricky part is now we have to deliver Wersquove got a little money we got the damn thing open wersquove got a whole lot of support but now we have to deliver And if wersquore going to deliver we cannot be wedded to our great ideas that we canrsquot recognize that this isnrsquot working and come up with another planhellip obviously I believe these ideas will work but if they donrsquot we must immediately say lsquothis isnrsquot working letrsquos try something differentrsquo

I think the basic med school is going to be okay I think our missions are great I think we have a good plan
