Businesswomen in the Viera/Suntree area are sending teen girls in foster care back to school with a new outfit, haircut, book bag and school supplies.

The secret side mission? Proving to them that someone does care.

Children, adolescents and young adults can sometimes feel like nobody cares about them, and in virtually every instance its simply imagined and temporary, said Charine Lewis, coordinator of the back-to-school project for the Women of Excellence program, a committee of the Melbourne Area Regional Chamber of Commerce.

But for teens in the foster care system, that feeling is more likely fact, based on documented abuse, neglect or abandonment. Our goal is to help these girls put down their guard and open up to the feeling that someone truly does care about them.

The event is held each August at the Chamber of Commerce offices in downtown Melbourne on a Saturday so that all conference rooms are available, this year on Aug. 3. All the rooms are used as girls take a fun personality profile quiz, pick

A big dog bowl with Brutus scrawled across the front, placed next to the back door. A shiny new sign warning potential intruders of an active alarm service whether or not the service exists. An actual barking dog, the bigger the better, or even a pocket-size pooch to sound an alarm.

These are some of the solutions, humorous but serious, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey gave residents of the greater Suntree area at a July 18 evening community meeting to address a chronic wave of break-ins.

Most of all, if something looks out of place, if there is a service worker circling your neighbors house that youve never seen before, give us a call, Ivey said. If theyre legitimate, no harm no foul, but if not, catching one intruder can give us a foothold.

The source of the break-ins appears to be a crime syndicate out of the area that sends intruders into upscale neighborhoods to rob homes of guns, jewelry, cash and other easily portable valuables.

The intruder or intruders jump back in the car and dash back out onto Interstate 95 and out of the area, giving sheriffs deputies little time to

    respond.Ivey has set up unmarked

vehicles and plain-clothes deputies to drive through the area or park as sentries. At the meeting, the sergeant in charge of Suntree/Vieras West Precinct General Crimes Unit gave an update of the teams progress. He dressed not in a deputys uniform but a nondescript black suit and tie.

We have gotten some calls about our vehicles in the neighborhood as suspicious, said Sgt. Alan Morrison, drawing waves of laughter from an overflow crowd of more than 200 packed into the fellowship hall of Advent Lutheran Church in Suntree.

This shows us you are already working as a team.

The intruders appear to be young adults dressed in service uniforms who first knock on the door to ascertain if the home is empty. They typically operate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the most common time occupants might be away at work. If someone answers, they may give a half-hearted sales pitch so the homeowner is not alerted.

The most frequent entry method is breaking a rear sliding glass door. Typically, the alarm is not activated because the magnetic plates that come together when the

sliding doors are closed do not separate.

An alarm service was the No. 1 recommendation given for safety. Make sure it can detect broken glass.

Get an alarm service and make sure it is activated, and engage it even if the occupant is home or plans to be gone only a few minutes, Morrison said. Be sure the system is in working order. Make sure the alarm signs are not old and tattered, and post them in a visible place to warn intruders.

Marsha Senior is among the south Suntree residents who have a new reason to be concerned: the new Pineda Causeway interchange off I-95.

We have no fences and nothing to stop intruders from walking into our backyards from Pineda Causeway, said Senior, who already has adopted a dog for security. We dont want to install the bars on the windows that are common in South Florida, but we dont know what else to do.

During a break-in, call 9-1-1, said BCSO spokeswoman Maria Furnez, and to report suspicious activity, call 321-633-7162 and an attendant can determine the response. VV

New wheeled garbage cans are in the near future for 100,000 residents living in unincorporated Brevard County including 14,000 in Suntree and Viera for a new automated system to come on line Sept. 30.

This is a very big change. The (unincorporated) county is the last in Brevard County to go to an automated system. First its mainly for cost efficiency, but it will also be easier and more convenient for the residents, said county recycling coordinator Hillary Arena, who has been working on the transition for about 18 months.

Starting Aug. 1, county and Waste Management crews will start delivering two standard 64-gallon cans or carts to each household, one for garbage and one for recycling with a yellow lid.

Within the first 60 days of the start of service (Sept. 30), residents can opt for a free larger, 96-gallon cart or a smaller, 36-gallon cart. After that there is a $25 delivery charge per cart.

Those county residents living in 55-plus communities will receive two of the smallest carts.

Those communities will be the exception and get the smaller carts because we think about 60 percent of the residents would request a smaller cart anyway because they dont generate as much trash Arena said.

Additional carts can be rented for $4 a month or purchased for $75 from Waste Management. Residents may also purchase their own compatible

containers from Home Depot or Lowes, but the containers must meet standard for semi-automated/automated collection, Arena said.

To avoid theft, each cart is manufactured with a computer chip. When delivered, the residence address is recorded electronically for inventory management. A sticker placed under the cart lid will identify the day of service and have information regarding the collection program, she said.

The collection rate for the new system is expected to go from the current cost of $125.70 to a proposed county budget collection rate of $150 annually, Arena said.

Whatever rate is set at, (county) staff wants the cost to remain the same for the entire length of the seven-year contract, Arena said.

Another reason to go to the new system is to increase the countys recycling collection rate which, at 48 percent, already is tied for the third highest county rate in the state, Arena said.

Were trying to increase our recycling efforts and this system should help. Rather than separating recyclables and putting them in separate 14-gallon bins, now you can put it all in a much larger container, Arena said.

After anticipating all the aspects of the transition, Arena said she is most concerned about residents jumping the gun after they get the new carts.

People will not be able to use them before the automated system comes in Sept. 30, she said.

For more information about the county program,

    go to brevardcounty.us/SolidWaste.

The Viera/Rockledge community rallied to the side of a 9-year-old Manatee Elementary School student and her family to raise funds for the girls cancer treatment at a July 20 community yard sale.

Maesen is a very brave and courageous little girl that is currently fighting the most aggressive form of childhood cancer, Neuroblastoma, for the third time, said Maesens mother, Rachael Navarro.

    Navarro and her daughter

spend a lot of time away from their family of six traveling to and from and staying at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, she said.

The funds will help offset expenses so Maesen can continue to get the treatment she needs to put the cancer into remission once and for all, Navarro said.

For more information or to make a donation, email [email protected] or mail to Maesen and Family, PO Box 561074, Rockledge, Fla., 32956-1074. VV

Many times in North America, we take for granted the need for water since we simply turn on our faucets or flush our toilets, said Daniel Richeson, VWNs executive director.

However, in many parts of the world, clean drinking water is not so easy to come by. Imagine spending most of your day walking to get clean water or settling for drinking from a hand-dug well that you know is contaminated.

Just as clean water is the greatest need of the neediest across the globe, so then is access to clean water the biggest Christian mission, offering the lure of water to hook parched souls on the living waters of Gods Word.

What the Richesons found on the mission fields is that there are many, many individual, unconnected churches and volunteers traveling to Haiti, Central America and Africa digging wells, installing water purification devices and educating villagers on the dangers of drinking and bathing in water laced with raw sewage.

We felt we could come alongside these efforts and coordinate them, we could do

more together than each one of us could do singularly all tallied up, Richeson said.

Clean water is essential for life, but one in eight of the worlds population does not have access to it. Each year, 1.4 million children die as a result of diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation. This amounts to around 4,000 deaths a day or one every 20 seconds, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), the public health arm of the United Nations.

According to WHO, half the worlds hospitalizations are due to water-related diseases. It estimates that the integrated approach of providing water, sanitation and hygiene reduces the number of

deaths caused by diarrheal diseases by an average of 65 percent.

Efforts to connect churches and host mission trips rely on business partnerships of VWN. Each company partner agrees to commit a certain percentage of its profits toward water mission work.

The first firm to do so was Grimaldi Candies, known for its ridged potato chips dipped in milk chocolate. The long-time, family-owned business was sold after its founder retired, and sold again four years ago to Melissa Richesons parents, Phil and Jamie Holtje. The retired couple lives off investments and puts 100 percent of the once again, family-owned business profits into VWN and other charities.

We have plenty of businesses and abundance in this country, Richeson said, so we feel called to share.

    Facing tough financial times

    Association Living

    BY FRANK KNEISERCMCA, AMS, PCAM

Most associations should be well into their budgeting process by this time of the year. Many boards are struggling to keep assessments contained while at the same time maintaining high levels of maintenance and service.

Residents are cutting back in their personal lives on dining out, entertainment and other areas in order to provide for their essentials.

According to a national survey conducted by Community Associations Institute (CAI), more than half of the nations estimated 310,000 community associations continue to struggle with financial issues associated with the mortgage foreclosure crisis and related economic downturn.

Many associations are experiencing financial shortfalls as a direct result of their owners economic distress.

Here are some suggestions that may help your

association save money or hold the line on expenditures.

Negotiate long-term fixed price contracts. If you have one-year agreements with your vendors, offer them a three -five year contract at todays pricing or a lower rate. Most vendors are experiencing the same economic struggles and would relish the security of a long-term agreement. Rebid all of your agreements with all service providers,

including accountants, attorneys, management companies and insurance companies.

Purchase supplies and equipment in bulk or larger quantities. This will often lower the per-piece price.

Consider each purchase to determine if it is a necessity. It may be possible to delay or cancel a purchase and save association funds. Reexamine each line item in your budget and see if any can be tweaked.

Going through a thorough financial evaluation will assure your residents of a carefully run association.

Its important to point out that Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of his Community Association Managers license is to stay abreast of the Florida Association laws. Contact him with any questions at [email protected]. VV

Jonathan McFadden met Monica Toro Lisciandro in Suntree Elementary Schools after-school program. They have remained friends, despite moving to New York.

I moved back from New York long before Monica, and started pursuing my degree at Eastern Florida State College (formerly Brevard Community College), McFadden said.

When Monica came back from Astoria, she called to say, Lets meet up. By then, she was married with two kids. That was the end of February 2012. When we met, Monica said, We should start that studio we always talked about,. . . I was working toward a law degree. In 30 days, we had the entire business plan and a website, a logo and a place.

Their dream became The Viera Studio for the Performing Arts (Viera Studio) and in one year, it has moved from a small, second-story unit to a 4,000 square-foot ground-

floor New York-style studio.Toro Lisciandro studied

    at Marymount Manhattan College.

I loved performing, she said, but when I was in college, as an intern, I found something I loved even more. There is something exciting in sharing the love of theater with kids.

She handles the administrative duties, teaches creative playwriting and musical theater and organizes events.

McFadden, who studied at the American Musical Dramatic Academy, the Singers Forum, the Connecticut School of Broadcasting and in Los Angeles, teaches all the acting classes.

At Viera Studio, he has focused on public relations and marketing. Enrollment is up from 30 students to 120.

Most who started with us a year ago are still with us, Toro Lisciandro said.

Students come from as far away as Port St. John and

Palm Bay, but most are local to Viera/Suntree.

McFadden said, We dont believe in putting a cap on the amount of time it takes to learn a skill. Its very individualized. Each of the instructors has a professional level of education and performing.

In addition to McFadden and Toro Lisciandro, Viera Studio employs a concierge and four instructors.

McFadden and his mother, Barbara McFadden, teach a social acting class geared toward those with Aspergers

syndrome; they teach students with other disabilities.

Everything we do, we teach the whole child, Toro Lisciandro said. Performing arts is our vehicle.

Following the studios production of Annie JR, 50 children presented Scenes and Selections inspired by The Lion King.

We couldnt have done it without the parents involvement, McFadden said. They went all out and we really appreciate it. The costumes rivaled Broadway.

Nine students will truly experience Broadway later this month when they visit the set of Annie, watch a production of The Lion King and eat at Ellens Stardust Diner. They will take a private master class with Broadways award-winning choreographer, Jim Cooney; tour Radio City Music Hall and audition for Fiddler on the Roof and Little Miss Sunshine.

Karen Curry has been there, done that. She lost her job, went hungry and became homeless. An educated professional, she is a prime example of the new face of homelessness that includes intact families with children that have no place to go and stay together.

This fall, churches will go from houses of God to homes for families. Families will stay at each church for a week while adult family members look for jobs and children go to school or day care.

This is a proven solution that not only works, but leads to an 80 percent success rate of families moving into permanent housing of their own and staying self-sufficient, said Viera resident Richard Lovi Lovisone, board president of Family Promise of Brevard. The board currently is seeking an executive director and a part-time case manager.

The nonprofit helps families access human services, permanent employment and safe affordable housing so they can achieve self-sufficiency and lasting independence, Lovisone added.

The rate of success for the families that graduate from the program after about 12 weeks is unheard of among homelessness intervention programs, Lovisone said. He served at another Family Promise location before relocating to Brevard, which has provided priceless leadership experience to the local start-up process, say fellow board members.

In addition to the new local unit, Family Promise has locations in Orlando and across the nation, with affiliates in 41 states managing 160,000 volunteers.

The concept is a welcome one to Rev. Hoyt Byrum, outreach and visitation pastor at host site Suntree United Methodist Church. The church pools outreach resources with others in the Suntree/Viera Area

Association of Churches, which will help support all of the Family Promise host churches in the area. Three of the 13 Family Promise churches are in the Viera/Suntree area, along with three official support churches that commit volunteers and resources to host churches.

As a group, and as with individual churches, we tend to give out food, and money when we have it, to the same families every week, every month or whatever is each locations rule for how often one can seek aid, said Byrum, the liaison between S/VAAC and Family Promise.

We as volunteers are well-meaning but we have no professional skills at effectively changing peoples lives, other than to offer love and prayer when they come for help, Byrum said. We often encourage dependency on churches, when our goal should be to help them become self sufficient.

The screening process and professional rehabilitation structure was the perfect solution to maximize limited S/VAAC resources and volunteer power, Byrum added.

    Initially, up to four families

and a limit of 14 individuals will stay in their family groups in temporary bedrooms at area churches, where church volunteers pay for and provide two meals and a packed lunch each day. Residents are shuttled to a resource center on host church Grace Fellowships campus in Rockledge to learn money management and other life skills. They and their children all return home each evening and relocate to another of the 13 churches the following week. Churches in the network host families once a quarter.

The program will launch at its inaugural site once the new executive director is in place.

In Currys eyes, the Family Promise concept cant come soon enough for families facing hard times, many for the first time in their lives due to the current Great Recession.

I totally get it. Im an educated, professional woman, and yet I lost everything and eventually had no place to live, Curry said. The face of homelessness has definitely changed.

July is generally a slow month for dance schools and dance apparel stores, so the owner of Melbourne Dancewear wanted to do something unique to keep interest in ballet piqued during the quiet time. Kitty Hatton asked her young customers from area dance schools to make colorful and fun creations from toe shoes. The imaginative designs that these young dancers came up with were artistic and fun, among them a whimsical surfer on a board in a bright blue sea, a nutcracker standing guard and a lamp with the toe shoe as a base.

Forty-four young participants presented their creations and all were posted on Facebook for feedback

from social networkers who would choose the winning entry. At the end of the month, the winning entry in two categories will be presented with gift certificates that can be used in the store.

Hatton has been a dancer since the age of 5. Her daughter and granddaughter and grandson have followed in her steps.

Hattons store does not just focus on ballet. She has apparel for tap, jazz, hip-hop, yoga, ballroom dance and zumba. All of the staff members are dancers or have danced in the past. They are very knowledgeable when it comes to types of shoes and other clothing necessary for a good performance.

Hatton also has consignment clothing in all sizes and types for reasonable prices. She

offers custom fittings and other sewing services having to do with dance apparel.

Hatton moved here from Miami as a dancer. She had a studio first in downtown Melbourne and then in Indian Harbor Beach as well as Satellite Beach and Palm Bay. Now she is settled in at her location in Melbourne at 442 N. Harbour City Blvd. at the corner of U.S. 1 and Babcock Street.

Melbourne Dancewear is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The phone number is 321-259-9922 or go to MelbourneDancewear.com. To vote for your favorite toe shoe creation go to Facebook.com/MelbourneDancewear. VV

The Melbourne Yacht Club puts women at the helm maybe to show the men how its done during the annual all-female crew Mermaid Regatta to be held Sept. 14 and 15.

While all the large sailboats are controlled by women during the Indian River race, men are often aboard to take vessels in and out of port. However, the men are only allowed to speak and stay midship so theres no racing advantage because of weight.

The friendly free-standing competition was the brain child 35 years ago of Rachele Ross, who learned to sail with her husband Jerry on freshwater lakes in Central Florida. Many members of the club are couples where both husband and wife sail.

My husband Jerry and I first sailed this little

homemade boat built from plans in Popular Mechanics. We all learned to sail it, Rachele Ross said.

From there the family went to a Sailfish, then a 16-footer, then a 23-footer, then a 25-footer. Now they own and sail a 30-foot boat called Sleighride.

The mermaid race was born out of an incident when Rachele had to take the boat from the Melbourne Yacht Club to the Eau Gallie Yacht Club to pick up her husband for a race.

Im heading up the river and one of the best sailors around was next to me we both had the same the same amount of sails out and I beat him. I thought to myself I can do this, she said.

Friend and longtime Sleighride crew member Jan Crawford agrees. Sleighride has won the womens regatta three times.

    There are a number of

Mermaid race gives women the helm

women who can outsail their husbands. If you look at the plaques and the trophies here, its interesting there are many women names on there, she said.

Like most races put on by the club, the boats in the six nautical mile course

can be easily seen from the Melbourne Causeway.

But club members gladly welcome volunteer crew, especially when the wind is up and they need more bodies for weight compensation to get the most out of their vessels.

    Actually, they just have to

show up here around 5 p.m. We have a sign-up list for crew, she said.

The Melbourne Yacht Club is located at 1202 River Dr. For more information, call 321-768-9921 or go to melbourneyachtclub.com. VV

An interesting and educational visit for your family and out-of-town guests is to the nearby Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards in Clermont.

Today, Lakeridge Winery ranks as Floridas largest premium winery and remains a pioneer in the development of table and sparkling wines from muscadine and hybrid grapes.

Complimentary tours and wine tasting are offered seven days a week 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday. Tours usually run every 15 to 20 minutes and begin with a 12-minute video presentation, which shows the growing of the Florida grapes to the wine-making process, finishing with bottling and labeling.

Your personal tour guide will then show you the production area and the spectacular view of the vineyards where the grapes are grown and harvested. Then, the delightful wine tasting is held at the large tasting counter. A selection of award-winning wines ranging from dry to sweet to sparkling are usually offered. This most informative winery tour and stimulating wine-tasting session lasts approximately one hour.

Our group had packed that morning a tasty fresh basket lunch that we enjoyed in their accommodating outdoor picnic area.

Afterward, we browsed the large retail area with a gift shop featuring all the Lakeridge wines and gourmet

foods such as fine olive oils, a variety of salad dressings, assorted cheeses, crackers, plus gourmet mustards, salsas and hot sauces.

During the course of the year, Lakeridge Winery hosts many special events, including arts and crafts festivals, jazz concerts, harvest festivals and grape stomping.

Call Lakeridge Winery for its schedule of events or go to lakeridgewinery.com.

Driving to Lakeridge Winery from Brevard County is a pleasant hour-and-a-half ride.

Take Route 528 West to Exit 4. Take the Turnpike north to Exit 285, U.S. 27. Turn left onto U.S. 27S.R. 25 and go south. Drive a short distance to the entrance of Lakeridge Winery.

Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards is located at 19239 U.S. 27, Clermont. Call 1-800-768-WINE.

You will enjoy this inexpensive, family friendly and educational day-trip visit as much as I did.

SPORTSWrap upEn garde! Club fencing league

    comes to Brevard

    By CARL KOTALA

The Viera High Fencing Club has some exciting days ahead this school year.

Entering its second year, the club will be part of a league featuring teams from five other Brevard County high schools, and possibly two teams made up of homeschooled students.

There could be more to come.

We figure once the word gets out, and they actually see us doing it, other schools are going to want to be a part of it, coach Greg Arthur said. There are other schools that have contacted me about it.

Arthur, who runs Iron Works Fencing, has been teaching classes at the Viera Regional Center since 2008. He was approached last year by Viera High student Tyler Leve about forming a club at the school. Leve is now president of the club.

Originally, it was just sort of an intramural idea, Arthur said. Wed just get together with them and fence a little bit.

Then Arthur was contacted by coach Daniel Bucur, who owns the Genesis Fencing Club in Melbourne. Bucur had students from Satellite High, Cocoa Beach and Florida Air Academy who were interested in forming clubs and the idea of a fencing

league began to percolate.Students will do more than

fence. What were going to do is

allow them to organize and create their own leadership, and kind of run the thing themselves because that gives them a chance to learn some leadership that they can use later on in college, said Arthur of the role he and Bucur will play. Were going to be advisors, and were going to be the coaches but hopefully, theyll be able to run everything on their own.

Clarke Conlon, who has been fencing for about two years, will be a senior at Viera this fall.

I always wanted to try (fencing), and Id seen (Arthurs) advertisement at the rec, so I decided to give it a shot, Conlon said. Its really fun. You dont see a lot of people do it, and when people ask me, they say, Oh, its so cool that you do that. VV

VIERA VOICE photo courtesy of Greg ArthurThe Viera High Fencing Club was formed last year. This time around, they will get the chance to compete against club teams from other schools.

After seeing three teams win district titles earlier in the month, the Viera/Suntree Little League had both of its softball teams the 11-12s and the 9-10s capture sectional championships and advance to the state tournament.

The 11/12 girls advanced with a pair of wins over Vero Beach. In the first game, Corrin Flajole singled up the middle to bring home the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth as VSLL rallied from a 3-2 deficit to win 5-3. Zoie Hatley had a single and double and Daphne Furman pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and no walks.

A five-run second inning propelled VSLL to an 8-1 victory in the clinching game. Lauren Rozic had a double and Hatley added a three-run triple. Taylor Jensen had an RBI single and Summer Johnson added a two-run single to close out the scoring. Livi King pitched a complete game with four strikeouts and no walks. The 11/12 team began state tournament play on July 19 in Niceville.

The 9/10 softball team won both of its games 11-4 in four innings over a pair of teams from Port St. Lucie. Pitchers Alyssa Tougas and Megan Andrews earned the two wins, while hitting stars included Morgan Mordas,

Abigail Soliven, Olivia Vice, Deanna Marrs, Kennedy Hewitt and Tougas.

Other team members included Megan Andrews, Kelsey Reiter, Bailey Bernard, Yelani Lugo, Brooklyn Helms and Angelina Rodriguez.

The 9/10 baseball team, which also won a district title, won its first game of the sectionals as J.T. Smith pitched 5 1/3 strong innings with help from David Rusnak. Liam Samuels hit his first-ever Little League home run.

Peter Petracco hit his first Little League home run in the championship game and Ethan Huffman, Peter Petracco and Cole Teply all pitched in rainy conditions as VSLL fell to Port St. Lucie.

Smith and teammate Declan McDermott received game balls for their performances during the All-Star season. McDermott batted .710 with 22 hits and 26 RBI while Smith pitched in five of the teams 10 games and had a 1.41 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 17 innings.

The VSLL 11/12 baseball team also won the district championship and was headed to the state.

Madison Headley, who was named to the 11/12 softball All-Stars, was part of a travel ball team that recently won the 14U ISA World Series. VV

Retired agent puts career on iceBy CARL KOTALA

Kerry Sweeney knows the payoff is in sight as long as he sticks with the plan.

The Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy senior has spent his summer not only working through a change in his swing, but also learning how to deal with something else: failure.

Though he did win a one-day boys junior qualifier tournament this summer, the 17-year-old hasnt had the results he would normally expect. But as he said, to succeed and be a champion is hard. Sometimes, you have to take a step back to move forward.

Its such a challenge to be patient, especially in the game of golf, Sweeney said. I want to take it to the next level, and so do many other players. But if youre thinking youre going to be successful every time you step on the tee box until the 18th green, and youre going to shoot the same exact score and youre going to win tournaments thats never going to happen.

Youve just got to accept failure. Im accepting it and learning. Im learning how to be a winning failure at the game of golf. Its the way it is. Its tricky.

Sweeney certainly knows about success. He won the Class 1A regional title last season and went on to finish 24th at the state tournament. The experience left him

wanting more.It kind of woke me up to say,

OK, lets work harder. Lets do something different, try to become somebody a little better next time, he said.

The swing change came in mid-April and for the first month or so, Sweeney struggled.

Now, hes starting to feel more comfortable, even if that hasnt been reflected in his results.

Im hitting the ball well, he said. Im putting really well. Im doing everything to try to score well, its just the scores arent there. Its going to come

    around.Heading into his senior

season, Sweeney is looking at colleges such as South Florida, UCF and Mercer. Hes also looking forward to helping the Tigers succeed in a very tough region come the postseason.

Im really excited more about trying to get to states, he said. Holy Trinity really hasnt been to states. Its a challenging goal, but I think we can do it.

As for his own game, Sweeney knows there is a big payoff down the road.

It will be very rewarding if I just stay patient, he said. VV

holy Trinitys Sweeney learning to succeed through failure

Back to schoolcontinued from page 2

VIERA VOICE Carl KotalaHoly Trinitys Kerry Sweeney is very happy with the way his golf game has been progressing this summer, even though it hasnt always been reflected in his results.

out a new hairstyle, shop for and try on outfits until they find the one that flatters the most, and then settle in for a delicious lunch with peer hostesses who become their new best friends. A goody bag with jewelry, toiletries and modest gift cards is the days souvenir.

We recruit positive, high-achieving girls raised in traditional homes to volunteer as hostesses. Its just like going to a party at a girlfriends house. The girls are definitely more apt to click with someone their own age rather than we who likely appear to them more like grandmothers, Lewis said.

The fun personality profile icebreaker allows the girls to discover that their qualities are what make them who they were meant to be.

If they are more shy, or more outgoing, or more organized, or more spontaneous, they see that there is nothing that is wrong with them, that there are positives to each quality, and they are perfect as they are, Lewis said.

While the event is healing and fun, the focus is on education, said one of the organizers.

The best part about this project is that it helps the girls get excited about going back to school, and education is the key to success in life, said Julia Irvin, former coordinator of Connected by 25, which helps give youth aging out of foster care a solid foundation as independent adults. Though she returned to the private sector as an engineer, Irvin maintains pursuit of the mission as a volunteer.

Often these girls come from unstructured backgrounds where school was not a priority, said Irvin, who also has for many years helped recruit mentors for young adults in foster care.

We see that the youth who have the best life-long outcomes are the ones who are able to keep up with the workload in mainstream school, so getting the girls excited about their education is extremely important in the short term and long term.

To join the planning team for next years event or to make a tax-deductible donation of cash or goods, call Lewis at 321-508-9030. VV

VIERA VOICE Linda WigginsHusband-and-wife team Greg Jones and Audrey Chow-Jones serve up ice cream, hot dogs, chips and drinks to private parties and public events across Viera, Suntree and beyond in their musical Mr. Js Ice Cream and More truck.

    By LINdA WIGGINS

In the blockbuster hit movie Men in Black, the otherworld detectives name was Agent J. Serving up frozen treats across Viera and Suntree, its just plain Mr. J. Retired federal special agent Greg Jones swears hes not working under cold cover. His Mr. Js Ice Cream and More truck is really just his post-retirement business.

Really.I get no end of teasing

from my former associates when we get together and catch up on what weve been doing since we were on the job, said Jones, who rather looks the part in trendy dark shades that would have made the ever fashionable Agent J proud. Rather than the MIB black suit and tie, Jones uniform is a white cotton T-shirt and hat emblazoned with the Mr. Js logo.

If Jones does get a bit full of himself in light of his once storied career, his wife and Mr. Js sidekick is on hand to keep his ego right-sized.

It gets him away from Judge Judy, Audrey Chow-Jones ribbed, flashing a grin that is her day jobs stock in trade at One Senior Place in Viera.

Seriously, shes right, Jones said of his guilty pleasure. After you have done such intense work over the years, you cant just stop and do nothing. You have to have a reason to get off the couch.

The pair met in as unlikely a way as Jones came by his second career. Operating under the radar, he met a leasing manager to check out a rental at the start of his gig in New Jersey as an air marshal. The potential landlord brought along her sister. Jones took the apartment and the sister, the former Audrey Chow.

Jones job intensified after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, which took place across the Hudson River from his office. The smoke and stench hung in the air for months over both home and workplace, Chow-Jones said.

The world changed for everyone after that day, but especially for Jones, special agent supervisor. His FAA job and those of many other national safety agencies were placed under a newly created department, Homeland Security. While

air marshals previously rode on international flights, they would now accompany every domestic flight.

Invisible to the average Joe, agents would now need to pore over every airport for any sign of vulnerability as well. While that has always been the case, it now seemed never ending as new X-ray-type equipment went into development and deployment. Jones took full retirement from the federal law enforcement career he started at the end of his U.S. Army deployment to Vietnam.

The Joneses sought solace far south of the frost line. In 2004, they moved into the dream home built for them from scratch in the Sonoma community of Viera. They discovered that for some reason and for many reasons, many of their Northeast peers in law enforcement also chose Brevard County for their post-9/11 lives.

What made the formerly buttoned-down Jones pursue a future in ice cream? He had a new administration to impress,

ruled by tiny heads of state he would need to work hard to attract to his new Florida home: grandchildren.

I grew up with ice cream trucks, Jones said. It was a joy of youth to drop whatever you were doing and race toward the music when you heard it, begging your parents for money along the way.

Jones stooped to hand over the counter two cones, an ice cream sandwich and a Spider-Man ice pop to some children, their nostalgic parents posing with them for a photo.

In Florida, kids have never heard of an ice cream truck, Jones said. I thought: Its Florida, it gets hot, ice cream is cold, kids love ice cream, Id like to see my grandchildren.

Retired agent puts career on ice

It was a joy of youth to drop whatever you were doing and race

toward the music when you heard it, begging

When I put it all together, it all added up.

Household ItemsThe next items may be less

commonly known, but are a good list to be aware of. Silica gel packs are often used to absorb moisture with leather, medication and in some food packaging. Although silica is considered biologically and chemically inert, it can cause nausea, vomiting and inappetence if ingested.

Toilet water with added tank drop-ins contain corrosive agents (alkali or cationic detergents). With dilution by the toilet water, the cleaning agent is less damaging but can still cause mild vomiting and nausea.

Birth control pills contain estrogen and/or progesterone. Estrogen can cause bone marrow suppression and some oral contraceptives also contain iron. Anti-depressants, NSAIDS and all other human prescriptions should be kept away from pets, and you should call your veterinarian if your pet ingests any medication not prescribed for them.

While liquid potpourri may seem harmless, it contains essential oils and cationic detergents, both of which can be harmful. Because product labels may not list ingredients, it is wise to assume any liquid potpourri may contain these

ingredients, which can cause irritation of the GI system, sometimes even ulceration.

Bread dough, when ingested, can rise in the stomach due to the animals body heat. Alcohol is produced in the rising process and the dough expands. Signs seen can include abdominal pain, bloat, vomiting and depression.

Mothballs, containing naphthalene, can be toxic even when only one is ingested. Signs may include vomiting, anemia, lethargy and seizures. Hepatitis and kidney failure are possible in severe cases.

    PlantsWith such tropical weather,

we see opportunity to become a great gardener. In my case, I just try to keep one house plant alive. But if you enjoy foliage in your house or yard, it is important to review toxic plants before you plant them in an area where your pet may have access to them. Some common toxicities we see are related to

ingestion of: Sago palm, hibiscus plant/flowers, rhododendron plants, oleander plants/flowers and some lilies.

The goal of this article is to educate you in some common dangers you may already know about, and perhaps broaden that education to include things you may not have been aware of. There are many other possible toxins and if you have questions not covered here, please consult your veterinarian for a more thorough discussion. They are always your best link to information. With education comes better care, and as a veterinarian, thats my favorite pet lover and client. VV

By ANGELINA GAFFEy I had wanted a Pomeranian

puppy since I was 7 years old, and three years later when my parents thought I was mature enough, I finally got one. Lulu was the cutest thing I had ever seen.

Imagine my sadness to find my four-month-old pup sick and vomiting, then to learn at the emergency animal hospital that she would likely die.

The culprit? A seed, or nut, from a sago palm. The nuts

and leaves are deadly to all mammals, and especially dogs, who have the greatest access to them and find them irresistible.

Lulu spent two days in the hospital for treatments that costs thousands of dollars to save her life and prevent permanent liver damage. It can take even longer and be more costly depending on how

much the dog eats. Without treatment, all dogs die. With treatment, if not too late, survival is 50-50.

Sagos are one of a handful of cyads as in cyanide common to Florida landscaping. Not a true palm, sagos are short with very sharp leaves and orange seeds the size of walnuts.

I am thankful Lulu pulled through, but now it makes me want to shout from the rooftops for everyone to get rid of all the sago palms in our community and beyond. For more information on all the plants that can be poisonous to your pet, go to petmd.com and click Emergency and Poisons. If ever you think your pet may have been poisoned, call your local veterinarian immediately.

Better yet, call a landscaper now.
