The Voice of Talbot Country Club Easton, MD Founded in 1910 August 2011 President’s Letter As I write this month’s newsletter, we are seeing the hottest temperatures of the year and are expecting to see triple digits by the end of the week. With these extreme temperatures, Guy and his staff will be taking special care of our course, including additional hand watering of the greens and creating slower green speeds. This is done to help ease the stress the greens are under from the heat. We hope this weather will be short lived and that we will see cooler temperatures soon. August is always an exciting month at TCC, as it is our Championship month. The men’s and ladies Club Cham- pions will be honored at our annual “Champions Party” following the conclusion of the men’s Championship on August 14 th starting around 3 p.m. or so. If you have never attended this event, you will not want to miss it. Other activities happening at TCC starting on the 5 th will be our Tennis Mixer Member/Guest starting at 5 p.m., a one day Junior Golf School on the 9 th and a new event being held on the 13 th , a Women & Wine Deck Party. Other exciting events include the Dog Days of Summer Pool Party on the 20 th , Guys and Gals on the 21 st and Nine & Dine on the 26 th . As you can see, there are many great activities taking place this month and this does not even include the Club’s weekly golfing groups. Please, as always, attend as many as these events as possi- ble, as your support is what keeps TCC a step ahead of the rest. In the middle of the Club’s busy season, please do not forget to introduce someone new to TCC. This is a won- derful time to showcase all of our great happenings here at the Club. We continue to have many membership incentives in place that benefit the existing member as well as the prospective member. The Membership Com- mittee has done a great job this year. Thank you. The budget will soon be completed for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2012. Once it is finalized, Treasurer Jerry Wilcoxon will update the membership with our current financial position and give you an overview of the upcoming budget year. I know the membership joins me in wishing our Superintendent, Guy Ostrander, a speedy recovery from his back surgery scheduled for August 2, 2011. As in most of my letters, I personally want to thank the staff at TCC. They do an outstanding job in making each member’s experience at TCC the best possible. If there is something you would like to see at TCC, please put a suggestion in the Club’s suggestion box. Butch Townsend President Important Club Reminder... Alcohol consumed on Club grounds, including the golf course, Club- house, parking lots and pool and tennis areas, must be purchased from the Grille Room Bar, Pool Snack Bar or Beverage Cart. We are officially enduring the Dog Days of summer! Come on out and beat the heat at the pool. The atmosphere at the pool is lively. We have excellent snack bar and life guard teams. The camps have been well run and well attended. The children enjoy diving and cannonball competitions, pool parties and swim lessons. You can usually join a lively game of sneak or capture the flag!

The tennis activities are great. The coaching is amazing and the clinics are well attended and fun. Dave Marshall’s dedi-cation to our program is tremendous. He continues to pro-vide weekly stroke clinics for adults and children. The drop in rate for these clinics is $20 and the open hitting with the pro on Fridays is FREE!

Please see Chris’s article for upcoming events at the pool and on the courts. As always, we look forward to seeing you out there.

From the General Manager

As I write this, the steamy weather has given way to some delightful 80 degree temperatures. This season has produced high attendance at many of our Club functions and sports activities. The tennis program has been buzz-ing, the July 4th Pool Party had 200 attendees and the Generations Cup had a classic finish, just to name a few. Our goal is to provide events and social activities that are exciting for you and your families.

On August 8th, TCC will host the Second Annual Staff Appreciation Lunch and Golf Outing. The event was a big hit last year. Many members donated their time and golf skills to participate with the staff. The event will be limited to the first 72 players. Members are encouraged to golf, help with the luncheon or both. Lunch will be held at 12:30 p.m. Golf will shotgun start at 2:00 p.m. for 9 holes. Prizes to follow golf.

On Saturday, August 13th, the Club will host a Women and Wine Party. We are calling all of the ladies to come out and sample wonderful wines and munch on tasty hors d’oeuvres. Guests are welcome. Sean Coatzee from South Africa will be here offering a variety of sipping options. The party is from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. $15.00++ per person. Please make reservations with the Club’s front desk.

The Pool will play host to the “Dog Days of Summer” Pool Party on August 20th. The kids can cool down with the Wild Rapids Water Slide. Food specials will be offered at the pool snack bar. There will be fun games for the kids as well. A full bar will be set up from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. LIVE ENTERTAINMENT with Char-lie Hannagan from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Please sign up at the pool or at the Club’s front desk.

The Labor Day Pool Party is a tradition unlike any other. Come celebrate another great pool season on Monday, September 5th. Activities include a great waterslide, games for the kids and a snow cone machine. The party begins at 12:00 Noon. There will be specials from the Pool Snack Bar and a full bar set up. LIVE ENTERTAIN-MENT with Charlie Hannagan from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please make reservations at the pool or front desk.

The 2011 Tennis Program has been immensely successful. Thank you to all members who have been participat-ing in our weekly stroke clinics, hitting with the Pro and tennis mixers. On Friday, July 8th, Dave Macpherson, coach of the Bryan Brothers was here for a tennis clinic. The atmosphere was tremendous as members took away skills for their games that are coveted by seasoned professionals. Dave Marshall and his tennis team have led the TCC program into a position that it has not been in years. Please take a moment to remind yourselves of the up-coming tennis events.

Friday, August 5th – Member/Guest Tennis Mixer – 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 19th – All American Tennis Mixer – 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 2nd – Labor Day Weekend Tennis Party – 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The TCC Pool also has a DJ every Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

It is not too late to sign up for the weekly tennis stroke clinics. Registration forms may be retrieved online. www.talbotcc.com. We recommend that members register, however drop-ins will be welcomed. Tennis clinics run every Tuesday and Thursday through August 18th. Please see the schedule below.

Every Tuesday and Thursday: Beginner – 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Kids Clinic – 4:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. Adult Clinic – 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

I would like to offer my appreciation for all of the Thirsty Thursday bartenders from this Spring. Thanks to Alex Fritzsche, Trey Rider, Pat Moore, Bill Rolle, Delia Denny, Vernon Nily and Bill Bowles, our Thursday nights this past spring were very popular. We had a friendly competition among the seven bartenders. Bill Rolle edged out Delia Denny is a very close race. The Club looks forward to hosting this event again in the future. Please thank your fellow members when you see them around the Club.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the Club soon.

Respectfully, Christopher S. Wyles General Manager

Greens and Grounds There is a new golfer on the course who has risen above all others. He takes his swing atop the pump house as a weather vane. He is bright and shiny now, and since we haven’t found anyone inclined to climb up and keep him that way, he will, in time, develop a nice patina.

The course continues to be in good shape in the midst of very hot weather. The crew had an opportunity in early July to needle-tine all the greens. With a new computerized device to test the moisture levels of the greens, it is much easier and quicker to determine how much watering is required.

It has come to the attention of the Greens and Grounds Committee that four of the holly trees at the entrance to the Clubhouse have grown to the extent that they have created a hazardous blind spot in the driveway, making it difficult, if not impossible, for drivers to see people walking in the portico toward the front door. In view of their potential hazard, the Greens and Grounds Committee recommended to the Board that the hollies be re-moved. The Committee fully appreciated the aesthetic value of the trees, but was assured that they would be replaced by other attractive plantings that would not obstruct the view of drivers. The Board is currently con-sidering the matter.

Having received the required permits from the county, the dead, or nearly so, trees on the golf course will be removed.

The Greens and Grounds staff is aware of the need to improve the foot bridges across the creek on the four-teenth fairway and work has been scheduled for the fall.

As for the geese, all efforts possible are being made to reduce their presence on the course to a level tolerable to golfers. Cleanup is a major ongoing activity of the crew. Since the geese seem to have no fear of golfers in carts, our Superintendent has been trying various techniques to develop the geese’s aversion to golf carts. There do seem to be fewer adults on the course, but currently the geese are unable to fly because they are ei-ther molting or too young.

In spite of the geese, the course is playing beautifully. Thanks to the Greens and Grounds crew that keeps it that way.

Notes from the Short Grass Marc Kimminau, PGA Professional It is midsummer and the course is bustling with activity. Although we have had some warm days, generally speaking the weather has been great and the course is in fantastic shape. August is Championship month and our Ladies, Men and Juniors will be playing for bragging rights. All Championships are flighted, so players of all skill levels may compete.

New for our Junior Championship this year, we will have two days of stroke play for the junior championship flight. The nine-hole flight, girls and younger children will play on Friday only and just one round.

Our Generations Cup was held in July and this year in the 18-hole flight, two teams tied at 8 under par. It was decided by Chairman, Jim Myers, to have a sudden death playoff to determine the champions. The teams of Karl and Peter Knade and Jerry and Kris Wilcoxon each shot 8 under par 64. After the end of regulation play, both teams proceeded to the 18th tee where they would play a sudden death, two-man scramble to determine the Generations Cup Champions. During the first two attempts at hole 18, both teams made par 3s, so off they went to the 18th tee for a third and final attempt. The Wilcoxon team knocked it to about 25 feet for birdie, while the Knade team was just off the green. After chipping close to the pin for their par, Kris Wilcoxon knocked in the 25 foot birdie putt to win! Job well done.

Don’t forget to join us for our complimentary Champions Celebration, immediately following the Men’s Club Championship final, at approximately 4 p.m., Sunday, August 14th. We will recognize our Men’s, Women’s, Junior’s and Senior's Club Champions. Reminders - All players MUST check into the Pro Shop prior to teeing off. Play beginning at hole number 10 is permitted with approval from the Pro Shop only.

Our greens are looking great… let’s keep them that way! Each player should fix at least one ball mark per green. Let’s all do our part!

Staff Appreciation Day - Monday August 8th will be our Staff Appreciation Golf Event. Lunch will pro-vided at 12:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. shotgun start, limited to the first 72 players. The golf course will be closed to play other than the staff appreciation event. Volunteers are needed for lunch and awards. Please join us to show our appreciation of our great staff. Patriot Golf Day - The Folds of Honor Foundation, founded by PGA Member and Air Force pilot Major Dan Rooney, will be looking for our support during Labor Day weekend for Patriot Golf Day. The Golf Staff will be accepting donations of $5 or more for the children of wounded or fallen heroes from September 2nd – 5th. Over the last three years our members have raised $3,000 each year. Let’s rally and try to reach $5,000 this year! Let’s assist the families of these heroes and make sure no families are left behind. Upcoming Golf Events

9-TWGA Member Guest

If you haven’t already done so, this is a reminder that our annual Member/Guest tournament is just around the corner, so sign up today! As you have already heard, each foursome will play as a team, with a “2 better balls of 4” format. You may pair up with another member and guest or we can help you do so. Either way, the day promises to be “wildly fun!”

Don’t forget that we have also secured the Steamboat Building of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum for the cocktail party, held the night before from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. In addition to enjoying panoramic views, you and your guests will be treated to two special exhibits on display there, so this is an event not to be missed.

Please obtain a Member Guest Registration Form from either the Ladies Locker Room or from Marian at the Club’s Front Desk.

Respectfully submitted by your Safari Guides, Mary Lou Peters and Sandy Pudifin

BALL MARKS! Please fix your BALL MARKS and at least one other to keep our greens beautiful and run-ning true. Guy and his staff have the course in excellent playing condition, so let’s do our part. Please remind family and guests to use their “pitch fork.”

The golf course will be closed all day on August 8th for maintenance and Staff Appreciation Day. The staff will be treated to lunch at 12:30 p.m. and a nine-hole tournament at 2 p.m. If you wish to play in a foursome with the staff, please call the pro shop. If you would like to help with lunch, please call Matt Sloan. The staff had a great time at the last event and is looking forward to this one.

As summer progresses and course play is being maximized, some untoward events may occur:

PACE of PLAY: It is important to be on time, know your tee time and keep up with the group in front of you. If you have an open hole ahead of you, consider either increasing your pace of play or letting the group behind you play through (whether they are 1, 2, 3 or 4 players). A great way to do this is to finish your hole, while on the green making a clear and obvious gesture for the group to play through, go to the next tee box, tee off and wait for the group behind to reach you. This courtesy is ALWAYS appreciated by golfers. A great day on the course can be ruined by slow play of others. If you see our junior players coming around the course, please ex-tend the same courtesy to them as well. If you get behind a slow group who is unaware of their slow play, you may ride up and ask to play through or call the pro shop and an assistant will come out and provide a solution. If you are riding, one of your group may go up and ask to play through. At no time hit into or close to the group in front of you to announce your prox-imity.

SAFETY: Please be careful and do not hit before the group ahead is safely out of distance. It is not only dangerous but poor golf etiquette. The occasional “shot of my life” will occur and can be forgiven, but waiting just one more moment will make everyone happier as well as safer. The golf psychologists recommend it as well.

Our summer thunderstorms have returned and it is important to stop play immediately when the pro shop sounds the alarm. Please seek shelter immediately and return to the club house, if possible.

Labor Day is fast approaching and PATRIOT GOLF DAY 2011 (September 2nd – 5th) will offer a special way to support the families of American service personnel. Marc will accept contributions in the Pro Shop and can charge them to your account to make it easy. He is working on a plan to have a major corporation match our donations. Go to WWW.PATRIOT GOLFDAY.COM for details. It is a great cause for the families of fallen and disabled warriors.

The Generations Cup was played last week end and was won by Jerry and Kris Wilcoxon in a 3-hole sudden death playoff with Karl and Peter Knade. Well done to all who participated!

Quote of the Month: “Golf isn’t just my business, it’s my hobby” --- Lee Trevino

As always, contact your golf committee members if you have suggestions to improve the golfing experience at TCC. Also the club suggestion box is always open.

Inaugural Talbot Country Club Sprint Triathlon Make a goal for the summer to participate individually or with a team for our Sprint Tri on Labor Day, September 5th. Hear the roar of the bag pipes cheering you over the finish line while bloody's, mimosas, beer, Gatorade and water await you. So far we have over 15 individuals and teams signed up. Like to bike but can't swim, no worries grab a swim member and a running team member and participate in the relay. The event consists of a swim in the TCC pool (1/2 mile), bike ride to Oxford Firehouse and back (approximately 14 miles total) and a run around the "Country Club Loop" (approximately 3 miles). Sign up at the pool, club or simply send us an email. Kids are welcome too - we already have 2 parent/child relay teams participating and the lifeguards are in the game.

9:00 am start for individual teams 9:45 am start for relay teams
