Voces de la Comunidad supporting Latino Survivors
Official ProgramOctober 22 & 23. Portland, OR
Welcome
Welcome to the second annual Voces de la Comunidad conference! We feel enormously honored to gather with colleagues, peers and allies from all over the state of Oregon to advance equity for Latina/o survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
We have strived for many years to bring advanced level Spanish language training for advocates and social workers through our 40 Hour Training. To further this pursuit, we launched Voces de la Comunidad as an opportunity to increase access to high level professional development for bilingual and bicultural workers. We see this not only as an opportunity for professional growth for the community, but an essential step toward education equity and advancement of professionals of color in particular.
We find immense hope in the number of advocates and organizations who constantly strive to improve their ability to provide culturally responsive services to Latina/o survivors and that recognize the deeply complex lived realities of these survivors. We hope that together we can engage in these complexities critically and actively. Highly intricate intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, nationality, language and other identities inform the lives and the experiences of Latina/o survivors and no aspect of these crucial parts of the self can be discounted when trying to serve the whole person.
This year, we hope to bring some of these issues more into perspective. We recognize that the individuals and families with whom we work do not only survive domestic and/or sexual violence, but the violence of poverty and racism as well. We understand that poverty and racism are enormously traumatic and that they have long term and detrimental effects on the well-being of our community. We hope to contribute to the movement to eradicate poverty and racism and strive to recognize and address the complex ways these phenomena manifest in our lives and the lives of people we serve.
We ask that all participants come to this conference with the aim to advance their journey towards allyship and the pursuit of social justice. We ask that the experiences and realities of marginalized people be respected and validated. We ask for respect and for a trauma-informed perspective that will advance the possibility of creating safer spaces. We send you all our deepest and most sincere gratitude.
Thank you for participating in Voces de la Comunidad and supporting us as we seek to contribute to the movement of racial and gender equity.
Con amor y respeto,Proyecto UNICA
