Feudal Society

What do you remember about the Feudal system?

Page 11: Vocab Word Search (pages 398 - 403)

Feudal Society

* After Charlemagne's death his nobles took over and set up a feudal society.

* In this system a lord granted a fife to a vassal who in turn supplied the lord with knights in times of need (war).

* This system was very similar to the one found in Japan.

Can you tell me who the vassal was similar too (think Japan)?

Page 16: Vocab Word Search (pages 398 - 403)

Feudal Social Structure

* In this system the King was at the top followed by his nobles and the clergy (churchmen).

Page 19: Vocab Word Search (pages 398 - 403)

Medieval Knights

The knight and samurai were very similar. Do you think you can predict some difference?

Page 22: Vocab Word Search (pages 398 - 403)

European and Japanese Feudalism

* Both the knight (chivalry) and samurai (bushido) followed codes of conduct.

* European feudalism was supported by Roman law where as Japanese feudalism was based on Confucian relationships.

* European chivalry was different than Japanese bushido because of knights being inspired to do good deeds for the love of a noble woman.

The Medieval Manor

Why do you suspect that people lived on a manor?

Page 24: Vocab Word Search (pages 398 - 403)

The Medieval Manor

* Manorialism was a self-contained economic system.

* The center of the manor was the lords house that was surrounded by a small village.

* The serfs worked together to plant and tend the lord's land and to harvest crops.

* The most important thing for a serf was being obedient to a king or lord.

Page 25: Vocab Word Search (pages 398 - 403)

The Medieval Manor

* The role of the lady of the manor was to run the castle and its household.

* The lord judged minor crimes and settled arguments among people on his manor.

Page 26: Vocab Word Search (pages 398 - 403)

* The hierarchy of European feudalism was King, nobles, knights, peasants.

* The main job for a serf (peasant) on a manor was working and farming the lord's land in exchange for protection.
