Networking fits seamlessly in Vietnamese culture: business startswith getting acquainted, then establishing a professional relationship. So the current trend to network is no hype. It emphasizes the integra-tion of Vietnam as active member of the World Trade Organization. In 2010 you can meet representatives of all continents in the nationscommercials hubs.

    Questions & Answers

    Q. Vietnamese people LOVE games. Do you include games in your training progams?A. Learning at its most effective is done bydoing. You hear, you forget. You see, you remember. You do,you understand. This saying is sometimes attributed to Confucius. So when I consider a game to be addingto the learning effect, I include games. But dont expect the usual competitive games. Competition is fun,but by definition results in winnersand losers. And learners should WIN, not lose.

    Q. How do you motivate learners to learn by doing?A. By inviting them to participate: do practical assignments, by interviewing them, by role play, and in caseof team building, by games designed to get all winners, no losers. By keeping the group small, maximum 16

persons. By minimizing, yet optimizing theory. And, by using theory based on real life situations.Q. How do I know a training course is a solid investment?

    A. By honestly and fairly consideringhow much you will lose as a result of ignorance and lack of know-how, and howmuch you will gain as a bonus. Think of direct and indirect costs, but also your reputation and efficiency costs.

    Q. Where can I find out more about your activities?A. In my catalog (see above), and in my profile at LinkedIn (see p. 6). Of course we can also meet someplace to catch up. Lets see when our agendas match.Q. What will you be doing the coming months?

    A. Currently I have engagements at Alliance ITC, Royal Business School, PACE, RMIT, and the BBAarticulation program of HCMC University of Industry (HUI) with NorthCentral University (NCUUSA).

All cover HR and/or communication-related topics. Other engagements are in the works.

    PEOPLE

    HATS LINES

This is a little yet powerful tool I use when I first scan an organization. Like any organization, youwill havepeople.Without their know-how and efforts, nothing gets done. You will also have hats: sets of re-lated tasks producing the results you need. And you will have lines: the communication lines between thepeople, and the process or workflow lines between the various hats. People wear hats (one or more put-together we call a job), and use the lines: communication, and procedures. Small organizations may haveas much as 100 hats, and the say, 20 people must make sure they are all being worn effectively. As a mana-ger, you need to control people, but also the lines: they determine the effectivity and the cost-efficiency ofyour company. Human Resource Management concerns itself with recruitment of people, who know how

to wear their hats (or should learn), and properly use the lines. HR then proceeds with training: on-the-job,and through courses: both hard and soft skills, to become better at wearing hats and using lines.

A structure of hats and lines is an organizational chart. After the first scan, I pull out my second, andeven more powerful tool: the Basic Organizational Chart. It is applicable to all organizationslarge, small, profit, non-profit, governmental, non-governmental, sales-production oriented, pure sales-oriented, IT ornon-IT. Although the complete design of this chart has much more detail (such as its top managementstructure), its general idea is as followsa sequence of steps from strategy to evaluation:

    C O R E B U S I N E S S Support staff Support staff

Human Resource Managementwill eventually evolve into an organizational unit that takes care ofPeople, Hats & Lines. A proper name would be: Personnel & Organization. A logical consequence ofthis is its direct involvementin quality improvement (forexample, increasing efficien-cy), and of course ChangeManagement: People, Hats

    & Lines in motion.
