On the morning of the 28tof April the

district collector office of Ramnaddistrict witnessed a unique day-longmeeting. Professionals from varyingwalks of life seemingly unrelated had assembled. Archeologists andarchitects, entrepreneurs and

environmentalists, self-volunteers andsolar power experts sat across thetable. This unique meeting waspresided by the district collector Sri.Nandhakumar IAS. The whole meetingwas facilitated by Sri. G.Vasudeo,Secretary of VK-nardep. Present at themeeting among others were, Smt.Jayashree Balachander IAS (Rtd), Dr.Kamalasanan Pillai senior scientist ofVK-nardep, Smt. Deepa MadhavanArchitect, Sri. Dhanashekharan, formerofficial of Tamilnadu Industrial

Investment Corporation,S.Ramachandran epigraphist andmany other eminent persons.

It was the first meeting of all the sub-committee advisors, coordinators andmembers of the Green Rameshwaramproject. Earlier the team had visitedthe various sites of the renovatedtraditional water bodies and studiedthe various features: including themethodology of renovation, challengesin keeping the renovated water bodiesclean and the various cultural aspects

This was followed by the meeting atthe District Collectors office.

Each sub-committee gave its inputsand observations by way of powerpoint presentations. The districtcollector and the entire team

assembled discussed each of the sub-committees observations and inputsand gave their own criticalsuggestions. Based on all these thedistrict collector arrived at somespecific deliverables for each of thesesub-committees within a reasonabletime frame.

After the session was over in hissummarization Sri. Vasudeo informedthe participants that Sri. Ravi Sam ofCoimbatore, Managing Director ofAdwaith Lakshmi Industries Ltd., has

consented to be the overall chairmanof the project. He had informed thatgiven the size and multifaceted natureof the project a detailed project report(DPR) has to be made, if necessaryby an external agency. All participantsagreed that each group would submittheir preliminary drafts for the ProjectReport in a months time. (which canbe used as the basis for preparing theTORs for the DPR). The districtcollector in his concluding remarkspointed out that the project is vast inscope and detailed in conception.

So he emphasized that the initial efforts have to be madeto first arrive at specific solid deliverable within astipulated reasonable time schedule. Concrete action withdelivery in the ground is vital in effecting the needed mind-change which is important in achieving the ultimate target

of Green Rameshwaram..

The Deliverables for each of the sub-committees:

1. Archeology and Culture: A time-bound specific plan for a book on the

cultural components of Rameshwaram which needto be highlighted

Creation of Public awareness billboards of at leastone of the neglected cultural component duringthe next meet

Work and time schedule for a coffee-table book onthe history and culture of Rameshwaram should bestarted.

2. Landscaping and beautification

Templates to be submitted for the following:

area specific signage in Rameshwaram

purpose specific signage like traffic / cleanmessages etc.

collaboration with municipality the signagetemplates have to be prepared for dustbins, pilgrim

guidelines etc.

beautification of the car streets can be taken upwith a priority basis right now.

Creation of spelling mistakes free boards

Should identify a plot of land within Rameshwaramfor a beautified zone.

Prepare a street view virtual map ofRameshwaram and plan improvement by zone

The Teerthams renovation work is progressing. Here we capture for yousome of the glimpses of the hard work that went into the renovation ofArjuna Teertham which was totally abandoned and almost lost. VK-nardep not only investigated and located the lost Teertham but put in a

great effort to renovate it.
