Peace and the survival of life onearth as we know it arethreatened by human activitiesthat lack a commitment tohumanitarian values. Destructionof nature and natural resourcesresults from ignorance, greedand lack of respect for the earth'sliving things. This lack of respect

extends even to the earth'shuman descendants, the futuregenerations who will inherit avastly degraded planet if worldpeace does not become a reality,and if destruction of the naturalenvironment continues at thepresent rate.

Our ancestors viewed the earthas rich and bountiful, which it is.Many people in the past alsosaw nature as inexhaustibly

sustainable, which we know isthe case only if we care for it. Itis not difficult to forgivedestruction in the past whichresulted from ignorance. Today,however, we have access tomore information.

it is essential that we re-examineethically what we have inherited,what we are responsible for, andwhat we will pass on to cominggenerations.

Many of the earth's habitats,animals, plants, insects and evenmicro-organisms that we know tobe rare may not be known at all byfuture generations. We have thecapability and the responsibility toact; we must do so before it is toolate. Just as we should cultivategentle and peaceful relations withour fellow human beings, weshould also extend that same kindof attitude towards the naturalenvironment. Morally speaking, weshould be concerned for our wholeenvironment.

This, however, is not just aquestion of morality or ethics, but aquestion of our own survival. Forthis generation and for futuregenerations, the environment isvery important. If we exploit the

environment in extreme ways, wewill suffer, as will our futuregenerations. When theenvironment changes, the climaticcondition also changes. When theclimate changes dramatically, theeconomy and many other thingschange. Our physical health will begreatly affected. Again,conservation is not merely aquestion of morality, but a questionof our own survival.

Around 1960, I was travelling from Gwaliorto Delhi by a day train, a 6 or 7 hour

journey in a 3 rd class compartment when Imet a group of people and I think in a waythat meeting gave me a view of India, thelarger India. The train was crowded. Somepeople however made a place for me. Andthere was this group of people, about

twelve of them, some three or four womenand seven or eight men. I asked themwhere they were coming from. They saidthat they had been on a pilgrimage, threemonths long, up to Rameshwaram, amongother places. They came from twodifferent villages north of Lucknow. Theyhad various bundles of things and someearthen pots with them.

I asked, what did they have in those pots.They said that they had taken their ownfood from home. They had taken all thenecessities for their food-atta, ghee, sugar- with them, and some amounts of thesewere still left over. The women didn't seemto mind much people trampling over themin the crowded compartment, but they didfeel unhappy if someone touched theirbundles and pots of food with their feet.

And then I said they must all be from one jati, from a single caste group. They said,'No, no! We are not from one jati, we arefrom several jatis.' I said, how could thatbe? They said that there was no jati on ayatra-not on a pilgrimage.

Water andSanitation …

I didn't know that. I was around 38years old, and like many others inthis country who know little about theways of the ordinary Indian-thepeasants, artisans and other villagefolks.

And then I said, 'Did you go toMadras? Did you go to Bombay?''Yes! We passed through thoseplaces,' 'Did you see anything there?'

'No, we did not have any time!' Itwent on like that. I mentioned variousimportant places of modern India.They had passed through most, buthad not cared to visit any.

Then I said, 'You are going to Delhinow?' 'Yes!' 'You will stop in Delhi?''No, we only have to change trainsthere. We're going to Haridwar!' Isaid, 'This is the capital of free India.Won't you see it?' I meant it. I wasnot joking. They said, 'No! We don'thave time. May be some other day.Not now. We have to go to Haridwar.And then we have to get back home.'

We talked perhaps 5 or 6 hours. Atthe end of it I began to wonder, whois going to look after this India? ,India are we talking about? ThisIndia, the glorious of the modem age,built by Jawaharlal Nehru andpeople, these modem temples,universities, places of scholarship!For whom are we building them?Those people in their pilgrimage werenot interested in any of this. Andwere representative of India. Morerepresentative of India than PanditJawaharlal Nehru ever was. Or I andmost us could ever be.

A technology with a human face, is infact possible; also it is viable; and

more importantly it reintegrates thehuman being, with his skilful handsand creative brain, into theproductive process. Such atechnology serves production by themasses instead of mass production.

I have no doubt that it is possible togive a new direction to technologicaldevelopment, a direction that shalllead it back to the real needs of man,and that also means: to the actualsize of man. Man is small, and,therefore, small is beautiful.

To go for giantism is to go for self-destruction. And what is the cost of areorientation? We might remindourselves that to calculate the cost ofsurvival is perverse. No doubt, aprice has to be paid for anythingworthwhile: to redirect technology sothat it serves man instead ofdestroying him requires primarily aneffort of the imagination and anabandonment of fear.

Right living consists ofwalking the talk, manifesting ourunderstanding in how we live,becoming guiding examples forothers in our environment. As suchit takes a lot of quantum leaps,openness to nonlocality, and thedesire to change hierarchicalrelationships into tangled ones.And right livelihood consists ofearning our living in a way that iscongruent with our modes ofthinking and living and helping ourentire society to achieve thiscongruence.

It is exciting you say, but is thatenough to motivate me? I will tellyou my fundamentalunderstanding: if you are readingthis column you are alreadymotivated. You know what?Consciousness is alreadypressuring you to join itsevolutionary movement.
