We have to take the wholeuniverse as the expression ofthe one Self. Then only ourlove flows to all beings andcreatures in the world equally.Just as a flower gives out itsfragrance to whomsoeverapproaches or uses it, so lovefrom within us radiatestowards everybody andmanifests as spontaneousservice When we feed, clothe and attend onanybody, we feel like doing allthese things to our own body,

for which we do not expectany return or praise orcommendation, because allbodies are our own: for, weas the all-pervading Atman orSpirit reside in all bodies..

Learning is finding out what you already know. Doing is demonstrating that you know it. Teaching is reminding others that they know just as well as you. You are all learners, doers, and teachers.

Diversity enriches a culture. We do not want to destroy diversity, but we shall subject our diversity to a central thread of spiritual unity. That was the vision of the ancient sages. That vision has continued to inspire India through the ages, including this modern period.

Eko vashi sarva-bhutantaratma; the one Self in all beings and rupam rupam pratirupo babhuva; assumes separate forms in respect of different shapes. To those who realize this truth belongs eternal peace. One infinite Reality appears in diverse forms. Realize this truth. That is the way to gain life. That is the way to become truly immortal. Jagadish Chandra Bose

When offering this universal, ancient, Sanskrit prayer, it affirmsa testimony to the truth of our lifeon earth. It states:

Asatho ma sat gamaye (Lead usfrom untruth to truth)

Tamaso ma jyotir gamaye (Leadus from nescience to light)

Mrityor ma amritam gamaye (Lead us from death to immortality)

O God, let humanity dwell in truth,in divine light, and in theblessedness of immortality. Allowmankind to ultimately receive thelasting peace and happiness itssoul longs to obtain. I pray that allpeople will live in harmony with allbeings in a world without war andstrife, respecting others' culturesand traditions, and valuing theimportance of preserving andprotecting our earth with its naturalresources and environment. Whata glorious day it will be when divineco-existence will be the idyllic, spiritual way of life throughout theworld.

These wonderful truths, thesespiritual precepts and values takeus onto the path of righteousnessthat leads to the holiness ofeverlasting life in God.

Diversity means many links, manydifferent approaches to the sameproblem. So a diverse community isa resilient community. A diversecommunity is one that can adapt tochanging situations, and thereforediversity is another very importantprinciple of ecology.

Diversity is astrategic advantage for a communityif, and only if, there is a vibrantnetwork of relationships, if there is afree flow of information through allthe links of the network. Thendiversity is a tremendous strategicadvantage. However, if there isfragmentation, if there are subgroups

in the network or individuals who arenot really part of the network, thendiversity can generate prejudice, itcan generate friction, and as weknow well from our inner cities, it cangenerate violence. All the researchabout diverse learning styles anddiverse intelligences will beextremely useful if and only if there isa vibrant community where you haveinterdependence, a vibrant networkof relationships, and cyclical flows ofenergy and information. So these are

some of the basic principles ofecology: interdependence, recycling, partnership, flexibility, diversity, andas a consequence of all these, sustainability.

I think the so-called privilegedWesterners need to rethink the last500 years of history and look atother cultures with fresh eyes.Academic rational knowledge hasfundamentally misjudged indigenouscultures that have other ways ofknowing, and looked down on them, but by opening intercultural spacesfor scientists and shamans to havedialogues, well have better tools forunderstanding the world. Westernscientists are beginning to uncovertwo facts of life that indigenousshamans have known for millennia:All of nature teems with intelligenceand all life is interconnected.

An indigenous culture with sufficientterritory, and bilingual andintercultural education, is in a betterposition to maintain and cultivate itsmythology and shamanism.Conversely, the confiscation of theirlands and imposition of foreigneducation, which turns their youngpeople into amnesiacs, threatensthe survival not only of thesepeople, but of an entire way of

knowing. It is as if one were burningdown the oldest universities in theworld and their libraries, one afteranother thereby sacrificing theknowledge of the world's futuregenerations.
