Ann, Hans, Roel, Sophie, Herman, Natalie, Stijn and Tine Our ambassadors, your guides

Ann Meskens: (°1965) is a moral philo-sopher, journalist and author. Together with her husband, literary journalist Johan Vandenbroucke, in 2008 she founded the De Zondvloed bookshop which is already a Mechelen institution. Ann was born here and has never really left the city. Her philosophical collection Eindelijk Buiten published in 2009 took readers on a walk through Mechelen. Ann is also currently indulging her Wanderlust in Amsterdam, where she is part-time writer-in-residence at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie of f ine arts and design.

Hans Martens: (°1963) has been director of the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten — academy of visual arts — in Mechelen since September 2011. Before that he worked for SMAK in Ghent, curated (among others) an exhibition featuring work by Ai WeiWei at the Caermers-klooster cultural centre also in Ghent, and advised Flemish Minister for Culture Bert Anciaux. In 2004 Hans was involved in the early stages of Mechelen’s Contour, Biennial of the Moving Image. Hans lives in Ghent and takes the train to his Academie in Mechelen at least three times a week.

Roel Daenen: (°1974) is responsible for coordinating Heritage Open Day at FARO, the Flemish interface centre for cultural heritage. Before that he was involved in the successful launch of BOZAR as ‘audience developer’. For Het Firmament, home of puppet theatre, he carried out a feasibility study which looked into safe-guarding its future as a national expertise centre for the heritage of the performing arts in Flanders. Roel lives just outside Mechelen’s ring-road, in the shadow of the KV Mechelen stadium.

Sophie Thiebaut: (°1978) is a commu-nications expert and works as an online consultant. Her background as a graphic designer and webmaster often comes in very useful. In 2008 she founded Art-de-vie.be op, a community of and for lovers of life, art and culture. Sophie was born in Mechelen and lives with her partner and three children in Sint-Katelijne-Waver.

Herman Van Ingelgem: (°1968) is a visual artist. His work is always inspired by his immediate surroundings and is based on architectural elements and other ordinary objects. It questions our expectations and ideas about space, presentation and representation and the way we deal with our personal experiences. Herman exhibits at home and abroad and is represented by the Annie Gentils Gallery in Antwerp. He lives and works in the centre of Mechelen.

Natalie Gielen: (°1984) has been the communications and education coordi-nator for Contour since 2009. Contour is an organization which promotes the moving image and shows films, videos and installations in unusual locations in Mechelen. While looking for those locations, she got to know Mechelen like the back of her hand. Natalie lives in Antwerp and takes the train to Mechelen at least f ive days a week.

Stijn Maes: (°1980) is a philosopher and culture manager and curatorial assistant for the contemporary art exhibition Newtopia: The State of Human Rights. He is also ‘studio manager’ of artist Fabrice Samyn (Brussels) and the founder of O.C.A.M., an art organization that offers production support to promising artists. Stijn has lived near the Leuven Canal in Mechelen since early 2011.

Tine Van De Wijngaert: (°1978) is an actor with the Mechelen theatre company Abattoir Fermé. She now lives with partner and son in a farmhouse in Duffel, but lived and worked in Mechelen long enough to at least have earned the title ‘half Mechelaar’. Tine loves sewing, eating, the accordion, surprises and birthday parties. She doesn’t like spaghetti other than at home, classical music, romantic films or parking fines.

Hans: ‘Do visit culture square in the shadow of St Rumbold’s Tower! I am so proud of Dan Graham’s pavilion on the square right in front of our Academie. We share the work with our good neighbours at the Cultural Centre, which in its turn has the most beautiful exhibition spaces in the country. As the German artist Georg Baselitz said when asked his idea of the ideal space: ‘Four walls and light from above’. That’s all you need. Be sure to take a look when there is a temporary exhibition on at the Cultural Centre.’

At De Garage, space for contemporary art, Mechelen Cultural Centre offers a programme of visual art that complements the city’s other museums and centres for visual arts.

De Garage prefers the small-scale and the intense production of new exhibitions with the emphasis on young artists like Vaast Colson, Nadia Naveau and Kevin Welslau. New artists and expressions of art may appear alongside more established names and more familiar disciplines. De Garage regularly looks back on the output of artists who have made a difference, names like Johan Grimonprez, Jan Dibbets and Joris Ghekiere. Finally, with Made in Mechelen, the cultural centre stages exhibitions and concerts by Mechelen artists or artists with a Mechelen connection.

Sophie: ‘Mechelen has so much to offer visitors — something for everyone, in fact. Before starting work on a new communication assignment, I set out with a camera and notebook looking for inspiration. I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of Mechelen’s churches. If you appreciate silence and serenity, I would strongly recommend the recently restored Sint-Janskerk (St John’s Church) with its wall paintings and Rubens’ ‘The Adoration of the Wise Men’. The light filtering through the stained-glass windows is truly magical.’

12 ART — MECHELEN

biennial of Moving Image

Contour, Mechelen’s Biennial of Moving Image, is unique of its kind. The biennial is a platform for curators and artists working with different forms of moving image: films, videos and installations. The biennial also establishes a dialogue between contemporary art and architecture in Mechelen. It takes the form of a trail that leads to unseen aspects and corners of the city, heightening the artistic significance of the artworks.

The biennials are organized in odd years. The 6th Biennial of Moving Image will run from August 24th to November 3rd 2013 under the all-seeing eye of curator Jacob Fabricius (DK), director of the Malmö Konsthall in Sweden. The working title of Contour 2013 is ‘Leisure, Discipline and Punishment’. A small number of exhibition places in Mechelen will provide the venue for the sixth edition: semi-public spaces which are visited for pleasure, out of necessity, for reasons of faith or under duress. ‘Leisure, Discipline and Punishment’ will investigate social functions and relationships within the community. Not to be missed!

Herman: ‘Mechelen is the ideal city for cyclists. No matter where you live in the city, you are never more than a minute or two from a towpath or dyke which you can enjoy for kilometres. Thanks to the ever-changing colour of the water and the transfor-mation of the surrounding meadows with the seasons, the Dyle, the Vrouwvliet, the Leuven Canal, the Zenne, the Nete, the Rupel, etc. offer cycle rides for all times of the year. One of my favourite structures is the dam at the beginning of the diverted Dyle at Nekkerspoel. It’s an ingenious example of industrial architecture.’

Home of contemporary art

Bert de Leenheer and Dirk Vanhecke founded Galerie Transit in Leuven in 1988. Ten years later they moved the gallery to Mechelen where it has been a stalwart for art lovers ever since.

Transit shows, promotes and sells contemporary art from around the world. Housed in a very fine art-deco building dating from 1934, the gallery displays permanent work in an informal context by its regular artists and work from previous temporary exhibitions. New exhibitions are organized every two months in a separate building behind the art-deco building.

Artists represented by Transit include Virginie Bailly, Sergey Bratkov, Karel Breugelmans, Johan Creten, Luc Dondeyne, Wouter Feyaerts, Mehdi-Georges Lahlou, Allart Lakke, Thomas Raat, Christophe Terlinden, Stijn Van Dorpe and Jenny Watson.

Ann: ‘On the way home from the shop we often stop off in the Botanical Garden, ‘den botaniek’, our favourite sanctuary here. In a city you seek out greenery and tranquillity more. We still enjoy living in the city centre. It means you can do everything by bike or on foot. Though a good tram connection would be a real bonus for a city like Mechelen. Imagine being able to hop on a tram that would take you from Nekkerspoel to Vrijbroek Park!’

Natalie: ‘I’ll gladly stay on in Mechelen for a play at kc nOna. This adventurous arts centre stages national and international work and sticks its neck out for young talent. It also has a very pleasant foyer.’

21ART — MECHELEN

Powerful art by vulnerable people

Duende is an independent gallery which offers artists with special needs, such as a mental impairment or a psychiatric background, the chance to show their work to the general public. The artists draw inspiration from meeting artists from the regular art circuit, which often produces surprising results.

El duende is a Spanish term which refers to the mysterious power we experience inside us as a physical/emotional response to different art forms. So the gallery is a place where people with special needs can express themselves to the outside world through art and socio-artistic projects. Duende is the first gallery in Flanders to take up this challenge. Gallery owner Mia Lettany is determined to give outsider art a visible place in society and, to this end, she looks beyond Mechelen’s borders and works with artistic and socio-artistic partners all over the country.

The reality of the reflection

HANGAR311 has blown a wind of change through Mechelen and the surrounding area. A converted factory warehouse on the Battelsesteenweg, the gallery is now the home of aesthetics and a place of serenity.

HANGAR311 sets out to support and promote figurative art by means of themed exhibitions, which cover graphic art, painting, photography and innovative jewellery and furniture design. Many artists are from Belgium, like Hubert Minnebo, Kaat Tilley, Rik Poot, Jaak De Koninck and Stéphane Halleux, but foreign artists are regularly invited to show their work too. One of the highlights is the Juweeltjes van Strips exhibition in September 2012 which presents the collected work of cartoonist Merho along with work inspired by the Kiekeboe comic-strip figures by jewellery designer Danielle Goffa. In November 2012 HANGAR311 will be transformed into an aquarium in which sculptural metal fish and paintings by the French artists Edouard Martinet and Patrice Cudennec will feature in the La Pêche exhibition.

Tine: ‘I sometimes pay a visit to the Toy Museum (Speelgoedmuseum) with my son. We just love the atmosphere of bygone days. The building and the collection are slowly but surely being updated but hopefully it will not lose its romantic, nostalgic feel, which makes the museum so unique. Last summer we went on a boat trip on the Dyle and saw the city from a very different perspective. It’s an absolute must, not only for tourists but also for Mechelaars born and bred and incomers.’

RIK WoUTERS — HIGHLIGHTS

ART — MECHELEN

A Mechelen genius

Rik Wouters (Mechelen 1882 — Amsterdam 1916) is one of the Belgian public’s favourite artists. Though his artistic career was cut short, he left behind a fantastic body of work.

Comprising 19 sculptures, 26 paintings and 55 works on paper, the Rik Wouters collection belonging to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA) is the largest. While building work is carried out at the KMSKA, the Rik Wouters collection has transferred to the Schepenhuis Museum (Aldermen’s House) in Mechelen where it features alongside works from Mechelen’s Municipal Museums’ collection. The KMSKA’s collection of sculptures and paintings will remain in Mechelen until around the end of 2017, when renovation work on the KMSKA is due for completion. During that period, a number of changes will be made to the presentation at the Schepenhuis Museum.

Stijn: ‘We are fortunate enough to live near the Leuven Canal so in the evenings, after a long day’s work, we often go for a stroll alongside it. All seasons have something to offer on the canal. When we go into the city centre, we like to walk past Frans Walraevens’ sculpture ‘Kijken naar de maan (Looking at the moon), a small, subtle and beautifully presented work on the Haverwerf. The visual language is more modern than contemporary, even if it is only a few years old, but that doesn’t detract from the work’s sculptural intensity.’

KAzERNE DoSSIN

Memorial, Museum and Documentation Centre on the Holocaust and Human Rights

The new museum was designed by leading architect and former Flemish Government Architect bOb Van Reeth. Van Reeth and his colleagues from AWG Architecten designed the new museum in a light colour so that it would act as a beacon in the surrounding area. While expressly marking the place of terrible events, it also conveys a positive message of hope. The four-storey museum has the form of a pentagon with large areas of glass. A newly-laid square with trees links the contemporary new building with the eighteenth-century Dossin barracks. Works by visual artists Philip Aguirre y Otegui and Nat Neujean will be on show in the memorial and on the square. Philip Aguirre’s sculpture evoking a poignant scene from the Holocaust will occupy a place in the Memorial’s second gallery in the former barracks.

Temporary exhibitions will be mounted on the fourth floor of the new building. Lined up for 2013 is artist Jan Vanriet. Kazerne Dossin will be opened in late autumn 2012.

Sophie: ‘Culture enthusiasts are in their element in Mechelen. The concerts at the Jazzzolder (Jazz Attick) jazz club are always worthwhile, but in September they go a step further and give jazzy ‘sitting-room concerts’ in Mechelaars’ homes. Then there’s DE MAAN puppet theatre. My daughter Lune and I are mad about this unique little theatre. A pioneer in Flanders, it never fails to work its magic with an enchanting tale.’

Conference and Heritage Centre

The Lamot site in Mechelen opposite the old Fish Market used to be the premises of the Lamot brewery. The site reopened in 2005 following a major conversion project by architects 51N4E. The bold architecture provides a successful combination of new and old: futuristic vision that respects heritage. Today the building houses the Heritage Unit Mechelen, the Grand Café Lamot brasserie and numerous conference and meeting rooms.

The brewery building with its LAMOT Conference and Heritage Centre is located at the centre of the Lamot site. There is also a hotel, a department store, several small shops, offices and 44 luxury apartments. LAMOT is the central point on the Dyle Path, which runs straight through Mechelen east to west alongside the Dyle. In 2010 the site and the path were linked to the Vismarkt (Fish Market) by a permanent pedestrian bridge. LAMoT is one of the main venues for the exhibition Newtopia: the State of Human Rights.

Roel: ‘When I drive back into town in the evening, from Antwerp for example, and St Rumbold’s Tower comes into view, it always feels like ‘coming home’. Inside the ring-road illuminated artworks like ‘Cirkel van Energie’ (Circle of Energy) in Stassartstraat and ‘Corridor’ on the Melaan make my nocturnal heart beat faster. Both are a legacy from Contour Light, part of the 2009 City Visions festival. A night-time drive through the centre of Mechelen is invariably a magical experience.’

Hans: ‘I love going into Huis Windels, Mechelen’s number-one specialist shop for quality tobacco and spirits. I can’t resist the cigarillos, otherwise known as ‘Mechelse kantjes’. Friends used to bring me them from Mechelen, but now I am close to the source myself. One of Mechelen’s last real family businesses in a magnificent old building, it’s the place to head for when you’re looking for a gift for the person ‘who has everything’.’

Huis Windels / IJzerenleen 48

Sophie: ‘In the space of less than five years De Zondvloed bookshop-with-coffee has become a real Mechelen institution and quite indispensable. This lovely old shop carries a huge stock and an excellent range of literature, poetry and art books. You could spend hours there just browsing over a cup of tea or bionade from the coffee corner on the first floor. I find a morning spent there before starting work on a new project very inspirational. At home I am easily distracted, but De Zondvloed is a real oasis of calm.’

De Zondvloed / Onze-Lieve-Vrouwestraat 70

Tine: ‘I love shops which are authentic and sell stylish things you won’t easily find elsewhere. So I’m really pleased to see so many smaller boutiques springing up in Mechelen. Paté du Chef on the Vismarkt was one of the first of its kind. It’s small but brilliant for novelty items for yourself and distinctive little gifts. The vintage shop Blender sells fantastic furniture, decorative objects, clothes and jewellery from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. It’s unbelievable what the owner Fanny manages to lay her hands on! At the Lily boutique I invariably fall head over heels for the cute, retro dresses. The owner recently opened a second shop in Onze-Lieve-Vrouwestraat: Mr and Mrs Tweed, which caters for men too.’

Roel: ‘Top of the charts has to be the Stripkever. The proprietor Jan is a real character. He’s funny, loud and his mind leaps from one idea to another so fast, it’s often difficult to keep up! He is also very good at his job: attentive, dedicated, bends over backwards to please, etc. And he stocks the very best comics and graphic novels. Salvator is also a very nice bookshop and for years a stalwart in the city. Sometimes I also go and take a peek in the De Slegte store, looking for hidden treasures.’

It’s a super building and the name brings a smile to everyone’s lips. I pop in when we need materials for Contour artists. You name it, they’ve got it: from work gloves to bath foam!’

Herman: ‘Few people know this but as well as the ‘Mechelse koekoek’ (chicken), there is another typically Mechelen dish, namely fried fish with brown sauce. The best address for this is Keulemans Vishandel at the beginning of Oude Liersebaan. On Friday mornings the fish shop displays the freshly fried fish on large plates. elderly Mechelaars jostle each other to be the first to dive into the bowl of brown sauce. A true indulgence, particularly when it comes to licking fingers and thumbs afterwards!’

Vishandel Keulemans / Oude Liersebaan 1

Herman: ‘Mechelen is home to numerous wonderful speciality shops. For good coffee ground right in front of your nose with a dash of expert advice thrown in for good measure, be sure to go to Maes koffie on the Ijzerenleen. The family company founded in Hasselt in 1958 now has a number of outlets including this one in Mechelen. A little further along the pedestrian shopping street Borzestraat you’ll find the grocer’s Marisol, which specializes in mouth-watering products from Southern europe: olives, oil, feta, dried apricots, ham and even authentic Spanish turrón (soft and hard types of nougat) and you’ll be served by people who know their onions! My very own Sint-Katelijnestraat is also blessed with a few gems. For instance, fans of classical music and jazz should not miss David Vergaelen’s music centre. It really does have everything’

There are scores of charity shops in Mechelen where I find clothes, furniture and loads of ideas for the interior. Our son Roman thinks we spend rather too much time in charity shops, but fortunately we take as much in as we take out!’

DRINK UP!

Natalie: ‘everyone has to go to D’Hanekeef once in their life! Mechelen’s most authentic ‘brown café’ with an amazing beer menu is absolutely charming. You always get chatting to other customers there. During the Contour biennials D’Hanekeef invariably becomes the preferred hangout of the curator and artists. Personally I’m a big fan of the Geuze Boon, but the Gouden Carolus and Maneblusser are not to be spurned either.’

D’Hanekeef / Keizerstraat 8

Tine: ‘I’m much keener on wine than I am on beer, though I don’t claim to know anything about my favourite tipple. If I like it, that’s good enough for me! Sometimes I think I should try and learn about it, so Wijnbar Unwined has been on my ‘to-do list’ for a while. I only hear good things about it. I look forward to their tastings of surprise wines.’

Unwined / Begijnenstraat 23

Ann: ‘Allow me to make an affectionate and passionate case for an ancient Mechelen café: De Gouden Vis. It has been my own favourite for years. I used to drink lemonade there when I was sixteen, I wrote my thesis there as a twenty-year-old with a cigarette and glass of wine in my hand, and I still go there to enjoy the people, the ambiance and the music, or the terrace over the Dyle in the summer. It’s unbelievable how whole generations grow up in the Gouden Vis, and how young people continue to flock there.’

De Gouden Vis / Nauwstraat 7

There in the middle of nowhere you can catch your breath, for example during a bicycle ride through the river area around the city. The Hotel Vé’s trendy bar is certainly also worth a mention for its cocktails, excellent whisky menu and wonderful seating.’

Stijn: ‘De Olifant is a lovely, relatively quiet, little café near the railway station, so handy when I have a meeting with someone who is coming to Mechelen by train, and who I want to spare the walk to the Vismarkt. So I quite often use De Olifant as my Newtopia office! There is something very peaceful about the place, so it’s ideal for a good discussion. And you can eat your own sandwiches there, which is always congenial. Recently Mechelen got its very own ‘coffee and culture bar’: MOK. Owner Koen offers an exhibition space to young artists while serving excellent coffee and hot chocolate.’

Roel: ‘When it comes to eating and drinking, fortune smiles upon you in Mechelen! If we’re looking to impress friends, we sometimes go to Grand Café Lamot, which is worth a visit for the view of the Dyle, Vismarkt and Haverwerf alone. A little further along there’s an excellent alternative, the Greek Karimata boat on the Dyle, an ideal location for really special occasions. But I’m equally happy at my favourite Indian restaurant Spice & Taste, just outside the ring-road. The owners bend over backwards to please.’

Natalie: ‘For a snack it’s hard to beat Den Akker on the Vismarkt, a convivial café with a very pleasant terrace, delicious vegetarian dishes and a nice atmosphere. It’s good either for a working lunch or with friends in the evening. I find it hard to walk past ‘Coffee & Cake by Savarin’ without giving in to the temptations in the window. They have the most delicious cakes and pastries. I can never decide between the rice tarts and the fresh cheesecake!’

Hans: ‘If I’m short of time I get a ‘Beastie Boy’ sandwich from ’t Hoekske on the Persoonshoek. Being sort of a martino special with barbeque sauce and chips, it’s not for the delicate stomach or the health conscious! For something slightly more indulgent I’ll go for a vol-au-vent at De Met. You cannot fail to be impressed by the authentic brasserie style and the impeccable service by the ever-reliable waiters. In the summer, the wonderful terrace with WiFi connection is a huge draw.’

Roel: ‘We go along to Atlas Wereldkeuken first and foremost for its world cuisine but also because of the ‘sitting-room feel’, the dim lighting and the excellent Portuguese wine. If you need time out after a demanding shopping trip on the Bruul, head for the better brasserie cuisine and the quiet summer terrace on the inner courtyard of De Margriet. For the obligatory Sunday-evening chips, it has to be the KV chip stall on the Kleine Nieuwendijk! The chips are cooked to a tee and deliciously crispy and then, thrown in for free, is the humour of Theo — the city’s nicest chip stall boss — and his humming, usually the same tune.’

Ann: ‘On our way home in the evening after closing the shop, we love to call in at Sputnik, a convivial little retro-style restaurant. The menu meanders from vegetarian world cuisine to ‘Brusselse stoemp’, Brussels mashed potatoes with sausage, and back again. The young owners also run the vintage shop Blender, which has been a household name among second-hand enthusiasts like us for years. Kemer Kebap at the station serves the very best falafel in Mechelen. Whether feeling slightly peckish or ravenous, I go there when I arrive late with the Amsterdammer. The people are so friendly, I feel really at home there. I was even invited to sit down with them and enjoy their grandson’s birthday cake!’

Herman: ‘As a fan of Oriental cuisine I often go to the Lan Na Thai Thai restaurant in Frederik de Merodestraat, where the food is absolutely delicious and affordable. A word of warning, it’s often chock a block, so be sure to book. A sometimes rather overlooked but delicious restaurant serving traditional Belgian food is Het Nieuw Werk on the convivial square behind St Rumbold’s Cathedral. You can’t sit closer to the historic heart of the city than that.’

Tine: ‘I am overjoyed at the arrival of Pain Quotidien in Mechelen! Breakfasts and brunches are definitely my favourite meal and ideal to combine with seeing friends without spending a long time in the kitchen yourself. One of the advantages of Pain Quotidien is that you can share a table with others. It’s convivial even if you go in on your own. Though I like going out to eat, I choose carefully. I try and eat as much vegetarian food as possible and preferably also organic — particularly after reading Jonathan Safran Foer’s book ‘eating Animals’. I miss that in Mechelen, a good vegetarian restaurant. If anyone is tempted to open one... please do!’

Le Pain Quotidien / IJzerenleen 35 / +32 15 41 54 24

Sophie: ‘My favourite restaurant address in Mechelen varies depending on my mood. I think Frida & de Henri’s is a real winner, whether it’s an intimate dinner or lunch with friends. A beautiful clash between modern and retro in the interior and heavenly and often surprising combinations on your plate, using seasonal produce. For a quick lunch, I like De Graspoort. The terrace is located in its own corner so that in the summer the kids can run around without the worry of passing cars. And then there’s the Moroccan restaurant La Boya. As well as delicious and affordable food, it has cocktails to die for! We digest it all afterwards on the terrace, in the shadow of the Church of Our Lady-across-the-Dyle.’
